Unilorin don identifies five pathways to global peace By 'Yinka Ademuyiwa.

A

midst growing global insecurity, terrorism and insurgency, the Director of University of Ilorin Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS), Dr. Mahfouz A. Adedimeji, has identified five pathways to global peace namely all inclusive politics, sanctity of life, access to justice, availability of good jobs and provision of quality living support for the jobless as well as accountability in the management of public affairs. Adedimeji made this disclosure in a lead paper entitled, “The Triangulation of Peace, Security and Development”, which he presented at the just concluded 3rd U6 International Conference held at the University of Ilorin from September 6-10, 2015. According to him, peace can be conceived from psychological , sociological, spiritual, political or even philosophical standpoints. From whichever perspectives, peace is harmony. It is orderliness and absence of domination or poverty. He traced philosophical works of Aristotle, Plato, St Augustine and others and concluded that peace is not only the absence of war but a state of mind. “It is both internal and external”, he emphasised. The prolific writer and columnist stressed further that, “Peace is both positive (freedom from want) or negative (freedom from fear). It is both absolute and relative”. Explaining further, he said, “Absolutely absolute peace is utopian, relatively absolute peace is achievable and relatively relative peace is controllable”, adding that absolutely relative peace is inflammable. Citing different sections of the holy books particularly the Bible, the Qu’ran, the Tahmud (Judaism) and the Udana-Varga (Buddhism), he listed rules to happier life as; love Allah, harm no one, forgive always, do good and be positive. The core of conflicts, he noted, are human greed and counseled against unbridled acquisition of wealth far beyond needs. “When we die, our money remain in the banks…yet when we are alive , we don't have enough to spend”, he observed, adding that in reality after we had died, there will still be money left unspent. To further drive home his point, Dr. Adedimeji reported a story of a rich Chinese business tycoon who

died leaving for his widow about $2billion dollars. Shortly after his demise, the widow married her husband's driver who pleasantly exclaimed when his new status dawned on him that, “All the while I thought I was working for my boss…It is only now that I realized that my boss had all the while been working for me”. The Lecturer then stressed the importance of long healthy life or health security rather than mad rush for wealth, stressing it doesn't matter who is working for who. While tracing the nexus between Peace, Security and Development in a figure presented during the presentation, Dr. Adedimeji said that adherence to the rule of law guarantees peace and security in a given society while harmonious co-existence among communities often lead to development. For development to be sustainable and security to be continuous, he continued, there should be accountability, transparency and good governance. He traced goals and types of development citing the Singapore an experience in industry, housing, education, finance, and even foreign policy as a model worthy of closer scrutiny. Every development drive, Dr. Adedimeji further submitted, should raise peoples' quality of life, that is better income distribution and equitable access to life essentials like food, medicine and education. He added that development should engender the promotion of peoples' self- esteem through establishment of social, political, and economic systems and institutions promote human dignity and lastly increase peoples' liberty to choose from different goods and services available. While referring to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) development report (1994), which listed forms of security to include economic security, food security, health security, environmental security, personal security, community security, political security, Dr. Adedimeji said from his own studies in 2015, three other security types namely religious security, psychological (emotional) security and social security need to be included and addressed.

Ghanian varsity to host 4th U6 Conference, Sept 2016 More than 120 papers were presented at the well-attended conference on a wide range of issues such as Health and Environment; Governance and Legislation; Science, Technology and Energy; Education, Language and Gender Issues, Peace, Security and Development; Water Resources, Agriculture and Food Security, as well as Information and Communication. It was encomiums galore for the host University by a cross section of the excited participants who were obviously satisfied at the superb organisation, unprecedented hospitality and the sheer scenic ambiance of the University of Ilorin campus. Giving his impression about the conference, the representative of the Vice-Chancellor of Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), South Africa, Dr. Prins Nevhutalu, said, “The University of Ilorin has raised the bar. I pity the next host of the U6 Conference, the University of Cape Coast, Ghana”. In his own remarks, the representative of the Vice-Chancellor of the Cape Coast University, Prof. Owusu Ansa, described the hosting of the conference by Unilorin as “quite superb”, attributing the success to the organisational acumen of the host Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali. th Prof. Ansa, whose university will host the 4 edition of the conference in September next year, however, said that the University of Cape Coast had learnt one or two things from the University of Ilorin and would therefore stage a better conference in Ghana next year. Many other participants spoke in the same vein, saying that Nigeria, and the University of Ilorin in particular, is like a second home. Prof. Learnmore Kambizi, of the Department of Horticultural Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa, said, “When we were coming from Cape Town, many friends and relations discouraged us from coming. They reminded us of Ebola, Boko Haram insurgency, stealing and so forth. When we got to Abuja and had to wait for six hours to get connecting flight to Ilorin, we started getting apprehensive. “However, once we stepped our feet on this town

(Ilorin), everything was exciting. Things ran smoothly. To me it is like I'm at home. I enjoyed this Conference”, he said. Announcing the decision of the U6 authorities on the next plan of action, the Chairman of the Fund-raising Sub-Committee for the Conference, Prof. Olugbenga Mokuolu, disclosed that the next U6 Conference will be holding at the University of Cape Coast Ghana from September 11 to September 15, 2016 with the theme “Meeting Grand Challenges of our Time through Collaborative and transnational research”. Some of the recommendations from the Conference included the development of research templates towards strengthening of regional groups and international agencies for global development and democratic reforms through research; curriculum renewal and global convention on quality assurance; formation of Pan African quality assurance and accreditation framework towards addressing decline in education; adoption of public institutions in the community as exemplar of quality; designation of partner Universities as center of excellence in research and innovation towards the various sub-themes. Other highlights of the Conference recommendations, according to the communiqué, are the publication of policy advisory research outcomes to the home governments of the member universities; innovative use of information and communication strategies (e-tutoring) by technology and citizen centered computing to advance the U6 objectives; appeal to governments at all levels to show more commitment to the project to be in line with global practices; emphasis on peace and security as an important tool of social transformation; promotion of green culture and environmental education; and the need for universities to focus on how to generate knowledge rather than being banks of knowledge. The conference also concluded that there is a need for each member university to focus on research towards addressing a particular continental challenge and that there should be a data base of all researchers in the U6 towards strengthening collaboration and partnership.

How U6 is advancing African integration effort - Ambali (Contd. from front page) Speaking on the topic, “Tackling Grand Challenges Facing Humanity through Innovations in Science and Humanities for Social Transformation”, Prof. Okebukola pointed out that “the number one problem confronting the continent is global terrorism and insecurity”. He urged members of the U6 Consortium to promote religious, ethnic and racial harmony on their campuses. The Keynote Speaker also called on members of the U6 Consortium to conduct research and make publications of case studies of exemplary practices in socio-culturally relevant democratic governance. He further charged them to also provide template for strengthening regional groups and the United Nations. He said, “Research into innovative ways of promoting access and quality in education. Strive to be the best ranked in terms of quality in your different countries. Adopt a public primary and secondary school in the community to support them to be exemplars of quality. Provide a platform for the United Nations Educational and Scientific Cultural Organisations (UNESCO), the Association of African Universities (AAU), the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), ClOG and national quality assurance agencies to implement quality assurance programmes and projects.” Prof. Okebukola called for increased research focus on African indigenous healthcare delivery systems and support for the home governments in developing and implementing national health policies and plans. In addition, he stressed the need for research into new drugs based on African flora and fauna and on emerging synthetic compounds including advocacy to local communities on good practices. On ways to address the problem of unemployment in the continent, the Keynote Speaker called on the U6 members to ensure the production of entrepreneur graduates and system that supports graduates to secure loans for small businesses, noting that it is important to assist graduates to locate windows of employment opportunities. Prof. Okebukola also urged the U6 memberinstitutions to find ways of making solar power more effective for the development of the African continent. Staff Development Award

Noting that solar energy has come to stay, the Keynote Speaker, however, stressed the need for further research to make solar power last longer than what obtains today. Prof. Okebukola, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of Crawford University, Ogun State, charged the U6 members to “join the frontline of research on alternative energy sources and set examples of energy-saving buildings”, adding, “You should also showcase successful models of efficient energy use to other universities in your countries”. In his welcome address, entitled “Right Steps”, the Conference's Chief Host and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), disclosed that the Consortium of the six African universities was formed based on the truism that Africans are one and that Africans could only integrate to their own advantage. According to Prof. Ambali, “Our universities agreed on three key areas, which are: facilitation and coordination of joint research activities and curriculum development; organisation of seminars, academic interactive sessions, and other professional development activities; and organisation of annual joint international conferences/workshops to be hosted on a rotational basis.” The Vice-Chancellor then urged the scholars and researchers to explore joint research projects and collaborative academic activities, stressing that interdisciplinary research groups and inter-university research projects are very essential. In her own address, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Prof. (Mrs.) Temidayo Oladiji, said that the conference was poised to address issues of relevance to African development and at the same time contribute to global knowledge. Pointing out that Conferences like this one are the engines for development through research, Prof. Oladiji rd said that the 3 U6 conference was a wake-up call. She added that Nigeria and Africa would develop when the quality of research is improved and translated to locally useful and globally relevant products.

NASU tips Ambali for higher national assignment By Mubarak Oladosu

D

elegates to the Quadrennial Conference of the Universities Trade Group Council of the NonAcademic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have recommended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), to the Federal Government for a position of higher responsibility on account of his proven skills, intellect and humane dispositions. The Chairman of the Universities Trade Group, Comrade S.A. Adefemi, stated this last Wednesday, (September 9, 2015) while declaring open the Group's Quadrennial Delegates Conference at the New Science Lecture Theatre, University of Ilorin. Comrade Adefemi urged the delegates to challenge the managements of their various universities with the standards that they met at the University of Ilorin. He noted that in a time of positive change such as Nigeria is experiencing now, bad people should be replaced by good people such as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin since there is no second term provision for Vice -Chancellors. Earlier, the NASU General Secretary in charge of Universities Trade Group, Comrade Felix Ajayi, commended the management of the University of Ilorin for refurbishing the NASU bus, saying that the Vice-

Chancellor had made NASU comfortable by the gesture. In her welcome address, the Chairperson of the University of Ilorin Branch of NASU, Comrade (Mrs.) Olabisi Fadeke Adeshina, expressed her delight to host the event at an institution that is known for its peaceful environment, learning and development. She said, “The University of Ilorin has been able to carve a niche for itself as a peaceful campus where everyone is focused on excellence and institutional development.” In his speech, entitled “Service Delivery”, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, noted that NASU symbolises the University's committed workforce and urged the union to remain steadfast on the path of dedicated service. Prof. Ambali pointed out that the University is always ready to provide platforms where development ideas are ignited and urged the unionists to always be dedicated and aspire for greater achievements. He said it is part of the University management's “ways of encouraging hard work that the University recognised those who are outstanding in service delivery. I am aware that some NASU members had been given merit awards and have been duly recognised during our past convocation ceremonies and this will continue to be so.”

IUNCBD seeks multi-disciplinary research ties with Unilorin By Fatima Abubakre

T

he need to effectively bridge the gap between the academia and the formulation of policies within the society through the fostering of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary research approach among scholars and academics, was again underscored last Thursday (September 10, 2015), when the Coordinator of the International University Network on Cultural and Biological Diversity (IUNCBD), Prof. Pierluigi Bozzi, met with top management staff of the University of Ilorin during a collaborative visit. IUNCBD, formed by the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, was established under a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with a special focus on developing countries. The Coordinator was accompanied on the visit by senior members of staff of the University of Ilorin Faculties of Law and Social Sciences, led by the Ag. Dean, Faculty of Law, Dr Y.I. Arowosaye, In his remarks, Prof. Bozzi explained that the IUNCBD Network is concerned with bridging the gap between not only academic and policy perspectives, but also between education and capacity building, as well as between universities and the local contexts to which they

belong. He added that the IUNCBD Network was developed in response to the deep concerns expressed on the gap of coordination and knowledge between education and the international conventions/organisations that operate in the field of cultural and biological diversity. In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, represented by the Deputy ViceChancellor (Management Services), Prof. Yisa M. Fakunle, said that the University of Ilorin was very much concerned with interdisciplinary research that is geared towards addressing human problems. Prof. Fakunle said, “Your work in this position as an International United Nations Biodiversity group is exceedingly important because you are concerned with the environment, problems, and the policies and the laws that govern it with particular reference in this instance to the African continent; and we are very happy that we have a representative of that panel that you have been coordinating with and we hope that the cooperation will be intensified.”

Unilorin poised to produce graduates with entrepreneurial skills By Tajudeen Babamale

T

he management of the University of Ilorin is working assiduously to produce graduates with entrepreneurial skills. This was disclosed last Wednesday (September 9, 2015) by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), at the 2014/2015 SIWES Projects Exhibition of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology students. Prof. Ambali, who spoke through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, said that the management of the University was committed to guaranteeing a better future for the institution's alumni. The Vice-Chancellor also appreciated the staff and students of the Faculty for putting in their best as he described the action as very paramount. He pointed out that it was incumbent on the management of the University to provide the students with entrepreneurial skills as there is no more white collar job in the country. According to him, “There is no more white collar job virtually in the whole world. Your future can only be guaranteed with what you trained yourself with and how you have put that into practice”. In a chat with Unilorin Bulletin after the

exhibition, the representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Sunday David Oguniyi, said that the experience the students gathered is to make them their own boss after graduation. Prof. Ogunniyi also said that the action is part of the training programme for any Engineering student of the University as contained in the University curriculum. He appealed to the management for materials because most of the students spend their personal money to facilitate their projects. Some of the projects on exhibition included the Better by far liquid soap and the Better by far disinfectant manufactured by the Chemical Engineering Unit; brake drum for cars manufactured from aluminum wastes by the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Unit, as well as the mp3 player produced from scrap computer system. Others include extension boxes, first aid boxes as well as glassware (test tubes of various types and sizes) by the Central Workshop students. Meanwhile, the Coordinator of the 2014/2015 SWEP, Dr. Musiliu Sunmonu, appealed to the University management to accept the proposal from the Faculty so as to mass-produce the exhibited products.

Celebrating Olusola Owonikoko, a distinguished alumnus

I

n the run - up to the forthcoming 40th anniversary of our great University, Town & Gown had planned to run a special spotlight on some of the worthy products of the University who have made their marks in their various fields of e n d e a v o u r. To b e t a g g e d " T h e Distinguished Alumni Series", the initiative is meant to celebrate excellence and honour some of our alumni who have made and are still making the University proud, the worthy ambassadors of the University of Ilorin all over the world. Among those already penciled down for spotlighting are: the Governor of Kwara State, Dr. Abdulfattah Ahmed; the Managing Director of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited, Mr. Babs Omotowa; the Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank, Dr. Adekola; the new Group Executive Director (Finance) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Isiaka Abdulrarazak; the new Group Executive Director (Commercial and Investment) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Babatunde Adeniran; the National Legal Adviser of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Barrister Muiz Banire, one of the newest Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in the land; Mr. Abiodun Akanmu and Seun Okinbaloye, award-winning journalists at Channels Television But incidentally, 27-year old Olusola Owonikoko, who recently showcased the stuff a typical product of the University of Ilorin is made of at the White House, United States of America's seat of power, will have to take the first slot of this spotlight. This is for two main reasons: One, he is the youngest of the identified lots, and Two, he has just raised the bar of the internationalisation drive of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), with his brilliant showing at the 2015 Presidential Summit of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in Washington DC, USA between August 2 to August 5, 2015 . During the Summit at which President Barack Obama was the Special Guest of Honour, Owonikoko literally stole the show. The uncommon intellect of the Unilorin alumnus was not lost on the US President, who publicly acknowledged his very constructive and development-focused contribution. Indeed, the 2010 graduate of Microbiology has inadvertently ingrained the name of the University on the mind of the most powerful President in the world today! And as reported in last week's edition of Unilorin Bulletin, Owonikoko, after the question and · More

answer session with President Obama, was singled out for invitation to the White House for a one-on-one tete-a-tete with Obama's National Security Adviser, Ambassador Susan Rice. Owonikoko, a fellow of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, was among the 500 dynamic young African leaders that attended the Presidential Summit. T h e M a n d e l a Wa s h i n g t o n Fellowship for Young African Leaders is an annual gathering of young leaders between ages 25-35 from across Africa. As part of the programme, participants were made to undergo six weeks of intensive leadership training and mentoring in business and entrepreneurship, civic engagement and public administration, in 20 US universities and colleges. At this year's Summit, Owonikoko had stunned even President Obama with his question on what the USA was willing to do about brain-drain whereby the brightest minds of Africa flock to the West to the detriment of their respective countries. The Unilorin Microbiology graduate, who had been involved for over five years as a social worker and development practitioner in Nigeria, was also opportune to discuss issues concerning Africa with Ambassador Susan Rice, who is also charged with the coordination and integration of the Administration's foreign policy and intelligence efforts. Owonikoko was also at the Wagner College, New York, where he undertook a six-week course on Civic Leadership. He also worked with the “Lifestyle for the Disabled”, a US-based organisation that provides realistic work settings and experiences for intellectually disabled people. The Unilorin alumnus is planning to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a partnership between the US-based Life Style and his own Not-for-Profit organization, Project Enable, which trains and advocates for Nigeria's disabled community. A holder of an online Edx Certificate in Public Health from Harvard University, Owonikoko is also planning to pursue a Master's in International Development at a US university. He is indeed a worthy ambassador of the University of Ilorin.
