Wellington Portrayed Charles Wellesley, Marquess of Douro 978-19100-65129 Hardback with ribbon markers 288 pp 300 x 250 mm BIC Code: AGHF, HBG, HBW, HBWH £40.00 October 2014

Wellington Portrayed is a new, extended and up-to-date version in colour of The Iconography of the 1st Duke of Wellington published in 1935: the bible for anyone wanting to know about a painting or sculpture of the 1st Duke. Since the 1930s, many new images have been found and a considerable amount of new information has come to light. Wellington was probably the most painted and sculpted individual in British History: The National Portrait Gallery alone holds 339 images of Wellington versus 84 for Nelson, 85 for Marlborough, 90 for Henry VIII and 125 for Elizabeth I. The book opens with an essay by David Cannadine on the historical background, and continues with a copiously-illustrated narrative of Wellington’s life by Charles Wellesley, Marquess of Douro, explaining the Duke’s attitude to sitting for his portrait, with notes on the painters, sculptors and caricaturists who captured the distinctive face and features which became so widely known. The book continues with a complete illustrated catalogue of the portraits of the 1st Duke of Wellington in the family collection and elsewhere, including engravings.

History of Loot and Stolen Art Ivan Lindsay 978-19065-09217 Hardback with dustjacket 424 pp 284 x 180 mm BIC Code: ABK, AC, A ÂŁ40.00 March 2014

From the Ancients, Greeks, Romans, Vikings, Moors and Charlemagne, the author traces how a lust for pride of ownership and power over the vanquished has driven conquerors, confiscators (the old fashioned word for looters) and ruthless administrators to grab the valuable possessions of others. The different motivation of the greatest looters in history is a theme which is examined throughout the book. From Sargon II who ruled Syria between 721 and 705 BC, Alexander the Great, Cesare Borgia, Gonzales the Spanish conquistador who defeated the Incan Empire, Francis Drake, Napoleon Bonaparte, Joseph Stalin, Hermann Goering and Adolf Hitler, we eventually reach the twentyfirst century where looting continues worldwide and hardly a day goes by without news in the media of the latest audacious art theft. Ivan Lindsay is an art dealer specialising in European and Russian painttings. After four years in the army in South-East Asia, he worked in the City of London before becoming an art dealer.

Laurie Lee

His subject-matter here ranges widely – from the horrors of war to lively observations of natural subjects and the gentle lyricism of love poetry. But whatever his subject, he always casts it in a fresh manner for his audience; we see familiar things more joyously, more seriously, or simply with a greater and unfamiliar depth.

Laurie Lee Selected Poems

First published in three separate collections, the poems in this anthology span the first decade, as well as many changes of mood, in the work of Laurie Lee – but his style remains purely and inimitably his own. New readers will find here the jubilant images and limpid vision which characterise all his writings, while those already familiar with his work will return to it with a renewed excitment at his great power with words; it is impossible to read his poetry without being strongly moved by it.

French language edition of ‘Cage: Six Paintings by Gerhard Richter’. The Cage paintings were conceived as a single group, and displayed for the first time at the Venice Biennale in 2007. Their titles, Cage (1)-(6), pay homage to the American avant-garde composer John Cage (191292). In his Lecture on Nothing, Cage famously declared “I have nothing to say and I’m saying it.” Richter is equally suspicious of ideologies and any claim to absolute truth. He shies away from giving psychological interpretations to his paintings, allowing viewers and critics to make up their own minds. Leading critic Robert Storr considers the Cage paintings within Richter’s practice and the context of abstract art. A series of detailed photographs document the development of each painting and show the artist at work on these monumental canvases, giving unique insight into his working methods.

978-09564-04169 Paperback 88pp 320 x 240 mm BIC Code: ACXJ, AGB £38.00 Already available

Following her 2010 publication dedicated to roses, Cologne based artist Sabine Moritz here turns her attention to lilies, which she first began depicting in the mid 1990s. Working on paper, the artist has selected for inclusion fifty-nine charcoal, pastel and oil pastel drawings. During the development of this publication, the artist had the idea to introduce another ongoing body of work – drawings of objects – alongside the lilies. These objects are primarily hand-made works of art from different periods in history, such as a classical torso, an African figurine, and a Buddhist head. Including the objects alongside the lilies opens up questions of time, life, death, belief, truth, human psychology and the very process of making art. What drives us to make art and what does it tell us about ourselves and the civilizations we create?

In this publication, eminent American scholar and curator Robert Storr offers an authoritative view of September, Richter’s 2005 painting made in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center of 11 September 2001, asking “what is the meaning of a single, small, almost abstract depiction of one of the most consequential occurrences in recent world history?” Opening with a vivid personal account of being in New York that day and paying particular attention to the role of the media, Storr deftly explores the geo-political context of the attacks, capturing the effects of the atrocity on a deeply human level while navigating the complex web of political, social, religious and cultural factors that it embodied and the discourse it has provoked.

When setting down my responses, I used the technique of spontaneous writing as much as I could. I let myself associate with the image, but not randomly. It’s tempting when you look at Asian-inspired art, or abstract art in general, to turn the image into a Rorschach test. (Not that ink blots don’t have their own aesthetics. After all, they were devised to peer deeper into the patient than what he or she was willing to see, or tell.) I could be criticized for dwelling too much on everyday associations. My starting point might be too mundane. Let’s go a bit deeper, then. Telepathy isn’t about using your mind like a TV station to broadcast pictures. Indeed, telepathy is no more than an example of how mind extends beyond the brain. Mind is collective. Its contents are shared. Hidden in its deeper reaches are invisible things. What kind of invisible things is Lucy tapping into?

Consider Listening To Your Soul (p. 136). If I sampled twenty people and asked them if this image was masculine or feminine, I think most would say feminine. The soul, or anima, is also feminine. It’s our source, the still point around which a lifetime of activity spins. Isn’t that implied here? I see that white dot in the center as a kind of source, and swirling out of it is Creation. The soul expands into the world exactly like that. I also think that most people could see the outline of a chambered nautilus in this image, if it were suggested to them. Not only is the chambered nautilus one of the most beautiful shapes in Nature, but the way the creature builds its chambers, from the tiniest to the largest, is like a blueprint for the soul’s progress through life, beginning with the first, fragile experiences of infancy. Not everyone reads poetry anymore, but Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809–1894) wrote an exquisite poem about the chambered nautilus, meditating on eternity, of which the following is a short extract: Year after year beheld the silent toil That spread his lustrous coil; Still, as the spiral grew, He left the past year’s dwelling for the new

A Fine Body of Men

The Orleans Light Horse, Louisiana Cavalry 1861–1865 Donald P. Moriarty 978-0-917860-67-6 Paperback c. 250 pp Summer 2014

As armies formed across the country in early 1861, the call to the colours sounded and volunteer groups began to assemble. One such unit formed in New Orleans was an independent light cavalry troop whose members chose the name Orleans Light Horse. In this thoroughly researched Civil War regimental history, Donald P. Moriarty follows the Orleans Light Horse from its organization in February 1861 through its March 1862 muster into active service with the Confederate States Army to the war’s end in 1865. As the escort company to Lieutenant General Leonidas Polk and later Lieutenant General Alexander P. Stewart, the Orleans Light Horse was an integral part of the Army of Mississippi and the Army of Tennessee. A Fine Body of Men provides service records and additional biographical information for the company’s 215 cavalrymen, while inviting readers to experience the major campaigns of the Civil War’s Western Theater alongside these brave soldiers.

Photographs of New Orleans and the Latin Caribbean Sphere Richard Sexton 978-0-917860-66-9 Hardback 240 pp 11 x 12 inches

New Orleans is known for its distinctive Creole heritage – evident in its food, architecture, and people – but far from being unique, it is part of an entire family of Latin Caribbean cities that forged new, Creole identities from their colonial histories. In Creole World, author and photographer Richard Sexton explores the architectural and urban similarities among these culturally rich locales, from Haiti, Colombia, Argentina, Cuba, and Ecuador back home to New Orleans. With two hundred stunning colour photographs and essays discussing Creole history and urban photography, this book will give readers a taste of everything the Creole world has to offer.
