Cameron Mackintosh is London’s West End’s leading theatrical producer of musicals such as Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. He is also a significant theatre owner and has completed a two-decade campaign of refurbishment and rebuilding of eight London theatres, at his own personal cost of £250m. His generosity and altruism has set the tempo for maintaining one of Britain’s greatest cultural heritages for the next century, the West End theatre in the heart of the nation’s artistic life. Master of the House charts the histories of these eight iconic London buildings; their origins, their stories, the iconic shows and productions, the stars and the glamour. Lavishly illustrated with images from the Delfont Mackintosh archive, the book also contains original architect plans and drawings, speciallycommissioned photographs of the refurbishment, show posters and other theatre ephemera, and many sweeping panoramas of the exquisitely finished spaces. Michael Coveney was born in Whitechapel, London, educated at St Ignatius College, Stamford Hill, and Worcester College, Oxford. He has been the script reader at Royal Court Theatre, then editor of Plays and Players magazine and the chief theatre critic, successively, on the Financial Times, the Observer and the Daily Mail.

RHWL as the interior designer, had first worked together on the colourfully decorated new thrust stage Sheffield Crucible in 1971 and had since combined on three great Frank Matcham theatres, the Theatres Royal in Nottingham and Newcastle, and the London Coliseum. But it was their work on the refurbished Palace in Manchester – Cameron’s managing director at that time, Martin McCallum, had re-opened that refurbished venue with Jesus Christ Superstar for producer Robert Stigwood in 1981 – and on the Old Vic for its new owner, Ed Mirvish, in 1985, that clinched the deal as far as Cameron was concerned. McCallum, after discussions with Thompson and Ferraby, had produced a model of the Prince Edward for Cameron and Richard Mills, showing the proposed new boxes and slips designed to blend the circles and stalls and create one space. This was received with general approval. Nick and Clare had therefore been summoned for what they thought was an interview. They

turned up at the Prince Edward, where they found Cameron on the pavement outside, picking at the walls and muttering his displeasure at the state of the rendering. This was his first big theatre refurbishment and he meant business. As they all shuffled inside to an office, Nick whispered to Martin McCallum, ‘What’s going on, I thought this was an interview?’ ‘Oh no,’ Martin whispered back, ‘you’ve got the job…’ Nick was fully involved in the Prince Edward and, ten years later, the Prince of Wales projects, before retiring, while Clare would work on all eight DMT theatres, at one stage becoming an employee of DMT rather than of RHWL. One of Ferraby’s trademark talents is to pick up on decorative details that already exist in a theatre – it may be the pattern on a grille or flow of a piece of plasterwork – and re-use them in a manner both inventive and faithful. The decorative aspect of the screens to the new side gangways, for instance, related to the overall auditorium design but with particular reference

to the existing tier fronts and laylights. For these striking, wooden fretwork panels around the stalls – distinctly 1930s – she used a lacquered MDF board, a composite of sawdust that she had first experimented with at the Towngate in Basildon, Essex, because, she says ‘it has layers and gives depth in colour.’ One screen also included a discreet place for Cameron to slip in and out of, unobserved, complete with a tip-up usherette’s seat and drink shelf. It certainly looked, and looks, different. The effect of creating a screen at the end of each row made the auditorium seem narrower, and more intimate. On the other side of these screens were passageways that met Nick Thompson’s concern about audience flow, the movement of patrons around the theatre. The same MDF board was used – laser-cut and lacquered – on all the bar frontages, as well as on the front-ofhouse furniture, which was custom-made for the building, as it would be in all future DMT theatres. The wooden bar shelves for drinks on

performances in the shadow. Littler had also produced John Hanson as the Red Shadow in The Desert Song (the Broadway production of that musical was a great success at the Casino in New York in 1926), and the London premieres of both The Sound of Music and Jesus Christ Superstar until the latter’s composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, bought it from him in 1983 for £1.3m. On handing over the keys, Littler said it was pointless owning a theatre if you had nothing to put on the stage, rather like building a kitchen with no oven. The first show under Littler and Arnold’s management at the Prince Edward, Pick-Up Girl, an American comedy about a fifteen year-old girl being put on trial because she’s slept with an older man – no, I don’t think a revival is on the cards –

the end walls of the circle bar were conceived as pieces of decorative furniture to suit the period. And as would also happen in all future DMT theatres, there was a unified colour scheme for the carpets, drapes and seat fabrics. Ferraby’s signature wallpaper, an original 1930s design, was manufactured by Beauchamp of Lytham St Anne’s; all subsequent DMT theatres, thanks to Beauchamp, or Cole & Son, and Clare, always reflect the exact period of their inception, whether in patterns or stripes. The ‘new’ theatre shimmered in a beguiling purple and pink haze, recreating the feel of the original fuchsia pink colour scheme, and everyone noticed especially the grilles and lamps in the auditorium, the overhead lighting concealed behind the original coloured glass laylights, the beautiful plasterwork and the rectilinear coloured ceiling. The acoustics in the auditorium were improved by Richard Cowell, the lead acoustician at Arup, engineering consultants, with the introduction of low frequency

featured a young Maria Charles in her West End debut (as the girl); forty years later, she would appear in Cameron’s superb revival of Follies at the Shaftesbury (she was also Dulcie in the original cast of The Boy Friend at the Players and, subsequently, Wyndham’s). Curiously, Pick-Up Girl had moved across town from a brief run at the Prince of Wales, Cameron’s second theatre in his odyssey of ownership. After three months it gave way to Stanley Holloway in Mother Goose, followed by Ivor Novello’s The Dancing Years, which had been touring and popping back into London, dodging the bombs, for ten years since its premiere at Drury Lane in 1939. And now Bernard Delfont took the stage, and a lease, at the Prince Edward, presenting variety bills – much to the annoyance of Val Parnell, all-powerful at the London Palladium, who accused Delfont of ‘hurting’ his operation in Argyll Street. He didn’t ‘hurt’ Parnell when Danny Kaye tore up the stage at the Palladium, but he may have come close with presentations of Jewell and Warriss, Lena Horne, Max Miller, Max Wall, Norman Wisdom and Mistinguett (a poster marking her only appearance in London was a gift to Cameron by another senior producer, Harold Fielding, and hangs in the theatre). After Chico Marx packed out the place for five

weeks in the summer of 1947, Delfont sent him on a nationwide tour, but not to the number one venues on the Moss Empire circuit, which were controlled by Parnell; his itinerary included Hull, Dudley and Coventry. Chico sent Bernie a telegram: ‘Eternal gratitude for sending me to Hell, Deadly and Cemetery.’ Tom Arnold and Emile Littler continued producing the London Casino pantomimes with Arthur Askey in Mother Goose, Julie Andrews in Humpty Dumpty, Pat Kirkwood in Little Miss Muffet and Julie again in 1951, slapping her beautiful thighs as Princess Balroubadour in Aladdin alongside Nat Jackley and Jimmy Clitheroe. The revue traditions were maintained in the 1950s by Robert Nesbitt’s Latin Quarter cabarets, and one of the most (and one of the few)

successful new musicals was Wish You Were Here (1953), a Broadway hit with a book by Joshua Logan and music by Harold Rome, which placed a swimming pool onstage in a summer camp splashy hoe-down featuring Elizabeth Larner, Shani Wallis and the brilliant comedian and eccentric dancer Dickie Henderson. The competing claims of theatre and cinema in contemporary culture, which this venue epitomises, continued, with screen superseding stage as, for the next twenty years, the London Casino became the London Casino Cinerama Theatre under the ownership of the EMI music and leisure conglomerate (Bernie was still hanging in there). This necessitated drastic modifications to the auditorium: a large, semicircular screen, 64 feet wide and 23 feet high,

The Daily Telegraph Obituaries of 21st-Century Eccentrics EDITED BY ANDREW BROWN Hardback 256 pp 234 x 156 mm | 6⅛ x 9¼ in Thema Codes: D, DNT, DNP, DNB, DNX 978-1-914414-87-9 October 2022 £25.00 | $37.95

In the late 1980s the Daily Telegraph transformed the traditionally dry and stolid world of obituaries, ushering in a new way of writing about the dead that was vivid, gently subversive and richly comic. Telegraph obituaries became a byword for entertaining journalism, celebrated for their deadpan tone and sympathetic eye for human quirks and eccentricities. Here is a gallery of the most entertaining of these eccentric lives from the recent past, most of them never before published in book form. They amply demonstrate that in an age of committees and bureaucracy and increasing pressure to conform, eccentrics of all kinds have continued to thrive. From the oddball to the prophet, they have ploughed their own furrow. These miniature biographies are charming, funny, often moving, but always compulsively readable. Andrew Brown was born in 1969 and has been obituaries editor at the Daily Telegraph for nine years. He wrote his first obituary, a stock or advance obit of the actor James Garner, more than 20 years ago. He previously edited the opinion pages of the Sunday Telegraph and has contributed to The Spectator, the Oldie and the Catholic Herald among many other publications. He is married with three children and lives in south London.

This is Architecture Writing on Buildings EDITED BY STEPHEN BAYLEY AND ROBERT BARGERY Hardback 112 pp 210 x 210 mm | 8¼ x 8¼ in 60+ colour & B&W images Thema Codes: AM, AMA, AMB, AMC 978-1-914414-86-2 September 2022 £20.00 | $30.00

We all consume architecture – it is the one artform we can’t avoid. So it is hardly surprising that the finest writers have applied their minds to it. Most of them are not architects, but their powers of perception are such that what they say gets under the skin of a building – and gives us a lesson in how to look at architecture. You will be entertained and enlightened as you find out why Goethe went from being dismissive of Strasbourg Cathedral to being an awed admirer; why Ruskin was offended by decorated shopfronts; why D.H. Lawrence loved Etruscan temples; why Tom Wolfe ridiculed the Seagram Building; why Vita SackvilleWest saw Chatsworth as an alien interloper; why Rose Macaulay was passionate about ruins; and what Evelyn Waugh thought of Gaudí. The answers, and plenty more, are all here. Knowing them will transform the way you see buildings and deepen your understanding of architecture. Stephen Bayley is a critic, broadcaster and curator, as well as a prolific author on design and architecture. His books include Design: Intelligence Made Visible and Ugly: The Aesthetics of Everything. He chairs the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust, is design critic of The Spectator and Honorary Visiting Professor at Liverpool University School of Architecture. Robert Bargery is Executive Director of the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust and a project consultant in the heritage sector. He was principal researcher at the Royal Fine Art Commission from 1995-1999 before serving as Head of Policy and Research at its successor body, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.

A Thousand Fates

The Afterlife of Medieval Monasteries in England & Wales RICHARD TAYLOR Hardback 208 pp 240 x 196 mm | 7¾ x 9½ in 48 colour images Thema Codes: NH, NHDJ, QRAX, AMX 978-1-914414-71-8 July 2022 £30.00 | $45.00

A Thousand Fates explores the afterlife of medieval monasticism in England and Wales. A thousand years of monasticism in England and Wales came to an abrupt end in the mid-sixteenth century with the Dissolution of the Monasteries. At its peak two hundred years earlier, many people chose the contemplative life, while the rich sought salvation through the foundation or embellishment of religious houses. Much of the nation’s wealth was locked into these complexes through elaborate rebuilding, gifts of precious objects, property donations and flourishing libraries of rare books. Then in just four years all of the over eight hundred houses were closed and ten thousand people dispersed with the monastic fortune liquidated and passed to the crown. Today we are left with echoes of a time dominated by an enclosed elite, their homes repurposed or derelict or obliterated. Some of these foundations still thrive as churches, schools, homes or tourist attractions. Others though have left little physical trace, the casual viewer ignorant of their existence. This book is not an account of why the monasteries closed or what happened to the people displaced. Instead it focuses on the monastic buildings and their numerous fates and brings life to their stories. Richard Taylor has had a lifelong interest in the medieval monasteries of England & Wales. This was spawned by his parents with family holiday trips to ruined abbeys and priories, medieval parish churches and castles. He has spent over forty years in the aircraft industry but his passion is heritage. Across the years he has visited many of the locations featured in this, his first book. It aims to shed light on one of the lesser known aspects of medieval monasticism in England and Wales.

ho were the original Goths? The answer lies in antiquity. It is widely accepted that they were notorious ‘barbarians’ who had a hand in ending the Roman Empire. They sacked Rome in AD 410, but before their interactions with the Romans, their origins are complicated and mysterious.

punks, often sporting heavy eye make-up, spiky or messy hair and dark, layered robes and jewellery. Geatland, which became Sweden in the Middle Ages, was home to the Geats. These people spoke old Norse and feature as Beowulf’s clan in the famous legend. They were seafaring traders and had dealings throughout northern Europe. Even in the Middle Ages there is reference to the Geats living in Sweden. In ancient times, however, a group of Geats spread their wings. These Geats came from Gotaland in Southern Sweden. It is thought that they left their homeland due to overpopulation and settled in Poland or the Ukraine for a time. It was these Geats who became known as the Goths. They do not appear to have had a written language, although they spoke Gothic, but encountered literate peoples so start to appear in Roman chronicles. The Siege of Troy was wrongly attributed to the Goths by the Roman writer Jordanes. Both he and

They are often described as a Germanic tribe, which means they could be of Central European or Scandinavian origin. There seems to more evidence to suggest they had links to Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, making them kin to Vikings. Given the modern-day usage of the word ‘goth’ in terms of the subculture, the idea of the ancient Goths being similar to Vikings seems quite an easy and convenient notion, considering both modern goths and Vikings evoke ideas about paganism, blood and dark forests. In the contemporary media of the 2010s and early 2020s, portrayals of Vikings in film and television programmes certainly make them look like contemporary goths and

the rest of her life after her husband’s death in 1559. She is often portrayed as an evil figure due to her role in the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Mary I (also known as Bloody Mary) is also portrayed as wearing black, perhaps due to her Spanish husband, Philip II. At her execution, Mary Queen of Scots wore a black gown which she removed revealing a red petticoat and bodice underneath. These queens have bad reputations so the association with them may be one of the reasons why black outfits have villainous connotations to this day. Pale skin was another sign of wealth in the medieval and Renaissance world: it was evidence you didn’t work in the fields and could afford a life of luxury. Elizabeth I famously wore white make-up to emphasise this, establishing the archetype of the pale English rose for generations to come, and providing a classic look for the heroines of gothic novels and modern-day goths. The first example of mourning jewellery gaining popularity was in 1649, after Charles I was executed. The Royalists (his followers) incorporated miniature portraits or locks of his hair of him into their rings with the slogan ‘The glory of England has Departed’. By the end of the century it was increasingly common for the wealthy to distribute memorial rings to friends and family following a death. They often used a skull or bones as part of the decoration and were made of stones such as Whitby jet, pearls, bone or black glass. By the nineteenth century roses, praying hands, weeping silhouettes and urns were also used in designs.

In some medieval societies, wedding dresses amongst the nobility were often dark; as mentioned above, dyeing and keeping colours dark was expensive, so this was another opportunity to display one’s wealth. A costly wedding celebration in medieval times was not the norm: it was a definite statement of wealth and power. Black can be used to symbolise piety; despite its expense it became linked to Puritans in the 1600s. Dutch merchants at that time, despite being incredibly wealthy, wore black to give the impression of being strict Protestants. Black can effectively offset white lace or golden jewellery and suits fine fabrics such as velvet. With it being used by the clergy and the upper classes, it quickly became a colour which imbued authority upon its wearer, especially if it was well kept. As it can be seen as a non-colour, black can even suggest that the wearer doesn’t care for trivialities such as fashion. Black matches everything; it is simple, plain, strong and business-like. Yet surely this suggests that the wearer cares more about fashion than they are letting on. If they really aren’t bothered, why not wear orange or green? Of course not: black means power because of its intense history connected to grief, authority, royalty and religion. Purple and red have also become associated with gothic fashion. As previously mentioned, purple is connected to mourning, as well as nobility and royalty. Imperial Purple, also known as Tyrian Purple, was obtained from Mediterranean sea snails. Due to

plants. Colours would have faded from constant wear, harsher lifestyles and the cleaning methods used on the naturally dyed fabric. Any notions the modern mind might conjure up of a Viking-like people striding around dressed head to toe in black would be false. Relations between the Goths and the Romans varied, from some Goths becoming soldiers in the Roman army, to others unsuccessfully dabbling in Roman politics in AD 321 and 365 by supporting failed contenders for Emperor. One of the most significant encounters occurred when the Romans refused entry to the Goths after they were driven out

of Ukraine by the Huns. The Romans humiliated the starving Goths by offering dog meat in exchange for making slaves of the Goths’ children. Understandably the Goths rose up, but when the Roman Emperor Valens led an army to stop them, he was defeated and killed. His successor Theodosius wisely chose to make peace, which lasted until AD 395. The Goth tribes united under Alaric against the Roman Empire. After unsuccessful raids leading to a massacre of Goths in Constantinople, Alaric seized his chance after learning of weakness and infighting in the Roman government. He attacked Rome together

with runaway slaves and supporters of the executed Roman general Stilicho. The Roman Empire was significantly weakened and would be attacked by other enemies over the next few decades. It was the beginning of the end for the most powerful empire of the ancient world. After the Romans, the Goths lived throughout Dark-Ages Europe until the Middle Ages, with empires and kingdoms of their own, most notably in Gaul and Iberia (modern-day France, Spain and Portugal) where they established the Kingdom of the Visigoths; the Ostrogoths came to prominence in Italy in the fifth century. It seemed the Goths had settled down and begun to fit in with mainstream notions about being ‘civilised’. They were eventually vanquished by other invading forces, such as the Byzantines and the Moors. Ironically it was these little-known Gothic kingdoms which preserved Roman culture and Catholicism for future generations, and whose name, once a by-word for barbarism, came to be associated with the style and architecture of Europe’s medieval churches. During the 1600s the word ‘gothic’ began to be used to describe the styles and architecture of the Middle Ages, mostly notably in continental Catholic churches, to differentiate from classical Greek or Roman style. The religious art and buildings associated with medieval Catholicism was lost to many British churches due to Henry VIII’s Reformation of the 1500s, but was retained in the countries which had been part of the Goths’ territory during the Dark Ages.

Examples of gothic architecture in the UK include Whitby Abbey, Salisbury Cathedral, Glastonbury Abbey and Westminster Abbey. Much architecture from the nineteenth century was designed intentionally in the gothic style, mimicking these earlier buildings and known as gothic revival. Features in gothic buildings include arches, gargoyles and vaulted ceilings. Gothic architecture celebrates and beautifies the bones of the buildings whereas other styles tend to cover them up. This usage was then applied to other aesthetic elements of the Dark Ages and the medieval period. This included art works, music (especially choral music such as Gregorian Chant) and fashion styles. In more modern times, this can also include buildings, clothes and artwork up to the sixteenth century (for example certain Tudor fashions), or from later eras which were influenced by these periods. These gothic designs are often bold and elaborate, in contrast to the clean, classic designs of the Romans and Greeks. They still heavily inform our ideas about gothic fashion and style today. HISTORY OF THE COLOUR BLACK Black clothing brings to mind grief and mourning; however, it has had other connotations throughout history. It was often tied to the church. Throughout European history, the Catholic Church was very wealthy. Priests, monks and nuns’ vestments were often black and while this may seem merely functional to the modern eye, in medieval times it was seen as ostentatious.

This lavishly presented book is a must have for Goths, Gothic lovers, alternatives and anyone with a passion for fashion.

From the ancient barbarians responsible for the fall of Rome, to the black-lipped teenager updating their Instagram from a graveyard, Goths have been with us for a long time. Ideas about what is Gothic have changed and mutated, but a fascination with the dark and dramatic has remained a constant. The History of Gothic Fashion charts Gothic dress from its ancient and medieval origins to its various revivals and romanticised rebirths, examining its cultural inspirations including folk lore, 19th-century novels, the silver screen and rock music. For a subculture associated with literature and historical fashion, there are surprisingly few books that focus solely on Gothic fashion. The History of Gothic Fashion provides an indepth overview of the evolution of the darker side of style. Katie Godman is a costume librarian. She studied MA Fashion Cultures: History and Culture at London College of Fashion and received the Yarwood Award from the Costume Society. She has presented papers at the Association of Dress Historians Conferences and at The International Conference of Romanticism. She writes for The Journal of the Association of Dress Historians, as well as historical and fantasy fiction.

Biggin Hill, world-famous as a Battle of Britain fighter station, has had many lives. First used as an airfield in 1917, Biggin Hill saw brutal action in both World Wars, never losing a day’s operations despite devastating enemy attacks. Since 1959 two dynamic figures have kept this historic airfield open against the odds: fighter ace Jock Maitland, creator of the renowned Biggin Hill Air Show, and army pilot Andrew Walters, who has turned it into London’s No 1 business airport, with a thriving aviation community that includes air charter companies, engineering firms, flying schools, storage and restoration, and Formula 1 and Bombardier interests. Meanwhile a new Museum and St George’s Memorial Chapel keeps memories alive. The first full history of this great airfield, Nine Lives looks behind the scenes of a busy modern airport, digs deep into its dramatic past, and tells an inspiring tale of enterprise, innovation, teamwork and determination. Alex Martin grew up in Westerham, a few miles south of Biggin Hill, when the Battle of Britain was still a vivid memory. He has taught in schools and universities in England and Italy, worked for the BBC and the British Council, and written more than twenty books on history and travel, as well as children’s and adult fiction.

The Ultimate Gurkha Cookbook Authentic Nepalese Recipes PEMBA LAMA Hardback 256 pp 245 x 185 mm | 7¼ x 9⅝ in c.200 colour photographs Thema Codes: WB, WBN, WBA 978-1-914414-88-6 October 2022 £30.00 | $45.00

Ex-Gurkha chef Pemba Lama has cooked for many distinguished guests including Her Majesty The Queen and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

In The Ultimate Gurkha Cookbook Pemba Lama brings a mix of traditional and contemporary recipes from his homeland of Nepal, a place of great cultural and culinary diversity. Given its landlocked location, there has been an inevitable influence on Nepalese cuisine from its neighbouring countries and the eating patterns of the Nepalese people have evolved over time. Nowadays Nepalese cooking encompasses a variety of fusions from Chinese, Tibetan and Indian cooking, resulting in an authentic Himalayan cuisine. Gurkha-style food comes with its own exclusive character, due to the careful and exciting addition of fresh ingredients, various spices, seasonings and flavourings, many of which are exclusive to Nepalese cooking. By combining the art of Gurkha and Nepali cooking with the innate understanding and careful balancing of spices and herbs as well as the introduction of oriental and tropical ingredients into its dishes, each dish within this book is given its own unique Nepalese twist. With his zest for life and superb culinary skills, Pemba brings to the table many of his favourite recipes in this book, which include some he has cooked for VIPs such as Her Majesty The Queen and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Ex-Gurkha soldier, Pemba Lama served in the British Army for 23 years, retiring as a senior Gurkha Catering Officer. He joined the Civil Service in 2003 and has been in the hospitality business for over four decades. He currently teaches the tri-service military chefs in catering-related subjects in the Defence College of Logistics at Worthy Down, Winchester.

You once said ‘Art is to furniture as furniture is to art’. What do you mean by that? Ikon, Birmingham. Wonderful exhibition. I always remember Helen Chadwick who did the chocolate fountain. I walked into the exhibition and there she was dressed up as a washing machine, and her friend was the dryer. I thought how fabulous! It was the early Seventies and she could have entered The Alternative Miss World actually. That was the theme of the exhibition: furniture and art. Practical things. a three-piece suite, but a three-piece tree. I do love mad little sayings. I’ve always rather relished their immediacy. I say crazy things sometimes. It’s very important to the world to have crazy notions. That’s very much how I also title my pieces. Very often it’s not at the end that I make the title, but half-way through. I just have a notion and that’s how it gets its title. They’re not that important, the titles for me, I think it’s the piece that’s more important.

Let’s talk more about parties. Did you have a party in 1966 when you were 21?

FUN

& parties! “jumbles, travel and laughter”

Yes, I remember it very well. I was holding quite a lot of parties by then. Tamla Motown was huge and we were living in a place called Munster Road in East Oxford, students living upstairs and downstairs. I made the whole place silver. There was a small courtyard at the back in which I built a polythene structure and sprayed it silver, and then I painted all the rooms silver, and my bicycle was silver, and then Diane made me some silver vinyl trousers and a silver hat. Then we danced to Tamla Motown and had line-ups when we’d do all the arms together and so on. Such infectious music! So joyful. It’s the rhythm. I think it’s a very important music in world history. All the family were there and we danced away all night, basically. We’d warned the neighbours.

I’d often have themed parties 71

That was my 21st, but I’d often have themed parties. That was silver, so I went through all the different colours, of course. Lots of dancing. I wasn’t that interested in the Student Union parties, they were a bit dull. The only one I went to see was Arthur Brown singing Fire! with his flaming helmet. I always liked to give an edge to my parties. Then when I started going up to London in my last two years at college, I met all the Camberwell students and Robert

the fields just outside the village. Michael and sister Janet managed to persuade the local council to support the museum, whereby they would buy the property and we would rent it off the council. The day before it was due to be bought, an edict went out ‘No more purchases’. So Michael and Janet came up to the auction and they had to watch it go, for £30,000 or something. Now it’s been converted to very suburban houses and there’s no trace of the beautiful detailing that was there: folding panelled doors and beautiful floors, and a lawn that was so spongey you could bounce on it. A gorgeous place. We were staying with Lesley and Jonathan when that happened, and we had to think again. Michael asked the local landowners if they had anything like a shed they wanted to sell. And actually they had: an old squash court that had been empty for two years. There was a fashion in the Eighties for do-it-yourself squash courts, made out of huge prefabricated concrete panels. Anyway we got the building in 1987 for £12,000 and that was the beginning. It took a couple of years to get the thing going, and then my great friend Bernard Simons, a barrister and an early patron of mine, formed a charity for us, and eventually we got charitable status. The Sainsburys have been very good and they gave us some money to begin with, and as a charity we could go to different organisations and get grants. And that’s how we ended up in Berriew. When we first came here we slept on the floor, then Michael built the little tower on the back with accommodation in it — a bathroom and so on. It’s a little magic tower. We had to do quite major things to the building to make it habitable. First of all we insulated it, then we put heating in, then huge doors in one end. We got the car park as well as part of our land. It’s quite suited to be a museum with its gorgeous wooden sprung floor, and high walls, absolutely perfect for Egypt Revisited, because we were able to install it in layers, almost like a dolls’ house. When you view it, it’s like a three-dimensional painting. Even at that time, it still didn’t house everything I’d made, by any means, but we were able to keep stuff still in London. Then I donated everything that is in the Museum — I just gave it all away to the Nation, it doesn’t belong to me any more. Apart from The Cosmic Egg — I’m still the custodian of that, which I would like to be in a major museum. Over the years we’ve had quite a few directors, and we’ve just managed to prop it up. It’s very much like people who have children: they invest in the child. I’ve invested in my children, the sculptures.

Recollections of the life of artist and founder of The Alternative Miss World

Told in his own words, in response to questions from the writer and art critic Andrew Lambirth, this book chronicles Andrew Logan’s life and work through expressive anecdote and factual recollection. Reflections is a look back, but also a look at the present and a look forward: it is about the meaning of Andrew’s world and the sculpture he has made to fill it, and about his approach to art, to friendship and to living in London and Wales. The Alternative Miss World, founded by Andrew in 1972, is at the heart of his philosophy, not just the world’s greatest drag act (though it is this too), but an exhilarating celebration of the transformative power of the imagination. Andrew’s work, which is all about joy and beauty, is inspiring and uplifting. This book, based upon discursive interviews dealing with all periods of his career, explains and contextualises it fully for the first time. Andrew Lambirth is a writer, critic and curator. He has written on art for a number of publications, was art critic of The Spectator from 2002 to 2014 and his reviews have been collected in a paperback entitled A is a Critic. Among his many books are monographs on Craigie Aitchison, Roger Hilton, Maggi Hambling, John Hoyland, Margaret Mellis, Allen Jones, L.S. Lowry, David Inshaw and RB Kitaj. His latest book is the best-selling John Nash: Artist & Countryman.

Divining the Human The Art of Alexander Newley ALEXANDER NEWLEY Previously announced Hardback 336 pp 270 x 225 mm | 8⅞ x 10⅝ in 200 colour images Thema Codes: A, AB, AGB 978-1-913491-44-4 September 2022 £45.00 | $67.50

Spanning the worlds of Portraiture, Landscape, The Nude, Abstraction and Still Life, Alexander Newley’s project fuses the Fine Art traditions of patient observation and draughtsmanship with the transcendental intuitions of the mystic. ‘For me, art is a moral activity,’ he says, ‘a straining after the highest virtue of beauty and enlarged consciousness. As such, all art is essentially religious, even when it shows us the ugliness of a fallen world.’ Complementing the images is Newley’s personal reminiscence, placing each work in a fascinating narrative of self-becoming – and an often-dogged determination to stay true to his calling. The result is a unique account of an artist’s journey in his own words, firmly setting before us a body of work that continues to evolve and explore, always affirming a uniquely ‘human’ future. Alexander Newley is a leading contemporary artist, writer and teacher known on both sides of the Atlantic for his iconic portrait paintings of major figures in the Arts including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Christopher Reeve, Oliver Stone and Steven Berkoff. His work is in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and The Smithsonian in Washington DC.

Ireland embraced tourism from mid-Victorian times. Railways and cross-channel steamers between Europe’s two largest islands transformed the travel landscape of a country possessing a unique blend of attractive cultural, heritage, natural and manmade assets. This book records the story of travel, from and around Ireland, and how visitors explored places and new resorts put on the map by railway expansion. Sought after destinations were made familiar through travellers’ tales and writings, and an explosion in the level of marketing materials produced by competing railway companies and travel organisers, all carefully designed to attract affluent Victorian and Edwardian visitors. In colonial, post-separation and modern eras the numbers of British and American tourists increased rapidly. Together with a story of more organised, planned, and systemic promotion, the development of Ireland came about as a modern tourist destination. Yet for a hundred years the role of the railways were an essential component in a narrative that makes Irish travel so compelling. Martyn Pring is a tourism and travel history researcher currently working in the destination promotion arena. A marketing professional, having worked in private, public and academic sectors, he has a life-long interest in railways and shipping, deluxe forms of transport and social history. He has written two other travel-related books, and a host of published blogs and articles. Martyn lives and works in Dorset and is a frequent visitor to Ireland.

A century, a hundred, a ton, whether in sport, in life or an exam result raises expectations and interest. When it is a celebration of a leading yacht club’s longevity, pens descend on paper. From small beginnings after the First World War the Royal Lymington Yacht Club has become one of the UK’s leading sports clubs. The Club’s patron, HRH Princess Anne, has seen the Club lead the way in a UK-wide recognised sailing programme for local youngsters, resulting in many of them winning Olympics medals. Other members have cruised round the world for fun, some more than once, while others have risen to be world champions in a variety of racing classes, up to and including the America's Cup. This snapshot of a hundred years of a Royal Club is an absorbing collage of yachting, educational and social events in a thriving club that is at the epicentre of the boating world of the New Forest, the Solent and Lymington River.

Queen Victoria, the only child of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, lived a lonely existence in Kensington Palace until she ascended the throne at the age of eighteen and moved to Buckingham Palace. With the help of Baroness Louise Lehzen, her devoted governess, Victoria’s quiet childhood days were often spent creating a doll ‘family’ which consisted of 132 small wooden dolls individually dressed in miniature finery. Exquisitely handmade garments of lace, satin and velvet, sewn with minute fairy stitches. The tiny figures have come to symbolise the young Victoria’s isolated childhood at Kensington Palace and her longing for sibling companionship. But they also illustrate her patience and attention to detail, her colourful imagination and story telling gifts. In Queen Victoria’s Wooden Dolls Kim Marsland brings to light the series of events which resulted in these charming wooden figures and how they reveal the many interests of the young Princess, artistic passions that would stay with her during her long reign as Queen. The characters that come to life so vividly within her first journals, are seen once again through her delightful watercolour sketches, and the memorable and unique doll collection. Kim Marsland is an artist, illustrator and lecturer. She graduated from the Royal College of Art and went on to exhibit her paintings internationally. She was a senior lecturer in Illustration at the Kent Institute of Art & Design as well as a visiting lecturer at St Martins, City & Guilds and Cambridge College of Art.

The book explores contemporary Chinese society and its future direction based on direct and close scrutiny. Due to its distance and independent cultural development from the West, China has been the subject of an imagined world for many Westerners. However, the visions of Cathay could not justify the shape of Chinese civilisation. Only by contacting the nation and its people directly one can better understand its cultural essence and goals of development. David Ferguson was born and brought up in Scotland. He has been working in China as a journalist since 2006. Living in China made him realise the previous Western stereotyped visions of China are, to some extent, distorted. And it is important to gain experience the first-hand materials for reporting faithfully. Ferguson has been in direct contact with Chinese people and understands the people’s dream of building a community with a shared future.

Since the reform and opening-up, China's development has been evident to all. Its people have gained a sense of high achievement. These are all due to the advanced political system and the government's leadership. From a global perspective, the miracle of China's growth is not just about the scale and speed; more importantly, China has made a breakthrough in two paradoxes in the history of human development. Firstly, China did not follow the western imperialist example, focusing on its internal issues and keeping world peace. Secondly, China managed to avoid the predestined bottleneck of developing countries. Most developing countries are dependent on the Western-centric model of globalisation and could not achieve economic and political autonomy. In comparison, China maintained its independence, alleviated poverty and avoided the middle-income trap. The book analyses the advantage in economics and governance and traces the root of the Chinese way and philosophy through its culture and history. Professor Yan Yilong is Vice Dean of China Study School, Tsinghua University. He has been conducting many research projects of theorising national policies, and is regarded as key member of the national think tank.

These memoirs reflect the momentous changes that have taken place over the last century through the prism of Flavia Ormond’s experiences: first as an evacuee in Canada during the Second World War, then as a returned exile travelling and working in unusual circumstances in Egypt and Italy, where she lived for many years; and finally her love affair with art which led to a rewarding career as an art dealer in London, New York and Paris, moving amongst leading collectors and museums. Early chapters are profiles of Flavia Ormond’s forebears, John Lubbock, an acolyte of Charles Darwin, Augustus Pitt Rivers, founder of the eponymous museum in Oxford, George Agnew of the notable art dealing firm in Bond Street, and the Grant Duffs, her immediate family. The author pursued her passion for cultural history and travel during a long marriage to John Ormond, great nephew of John Singer Sargent. Born in London in 1936, Flavia Ormond was taken to Canada when her father went missing in northern France in 1940. Returning to England in 1959, she explored Europe and the Near East before attending The Courtauld Institute of Art and embracing her life-long passion for Italian Renaissance painting. She and her husband brought their children up in Rome in the 1970s, and later established a company dealing in Old Master Drawings, exhibiting in London, Paris and New York.

A peek behind the curtain of the 44-week course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Nobody forgets Sandhurst. The outside perception is one of pure professionalism, organisation, resilience and, dare I say, military efficiency. It’s all those things. But that isn’t what makes Sandhurst unique. This is a story of when reality meets perception and overachieving instructors meet underperforming cadets. There’s the stuff you’d expect from army officer training: parades, marching, making beds, shining, saluting, shouting, standing up straight and serving your country. But this is a story about people, relationships, idiosyncrasies, laughter, contradictions, chaos and the frantic existence below the serene surface. It’s Hogwarts with guns, playing the game, 140-hour weeks, halfsmoked cigarettes, five minutes before five minutes and getting on and off that bloody bus. So prepare your ironing board, get on the line and welcome to the finest military academy in the world. Geordie Stewart served for five years as an officer in the British Army with the Light Dragoons. He was the youngest Briton to climb the Seven Summits – the highest mountain on every continent – and has cycled solo around the world. He graduated from the University of St Andrews and has written two books: In Search of Sisu and A Rolling Stone. He currently works in motorsport for Extreme E.

The untold WWII story of the man who ‘modernised Wimbledon tennis’ to mark the 80th anniversary of the Italian Campaign

A Black Cat Abroad

A Territorial Gunner’s Selected Memories of the Second World War and the Italian Campaign (1943-1945) R.E.H. HADINGHAM A Black Cat Abroad is the untold Second World War story of a ‘Terrier’ nicknamed ‘Oscar’: R.E.H. Hadingham (1915-2004), CBE, MC & Bar TD, better known as ‘Buzzer’, who was later chairman of Slazenger’s and then the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon. Beginning with his work in London and Territorial Army training, it describes life in Wimbledon under the cloud of impending war. On 29th July 1939, Buzzer was commissioned into 167 Brigade, 67th (East Surrey) Anti-Tank Regiment R.A. T.A., the ‘Black Cats’. Three years later he embarked from Liverpool, carrying a sunhelmet, destination unknown. Momentous challenges followed, not least a 3-year separation from his family. Here are fresh aspects of an epic 3,000-mile journey from Iraq to action in North Africa, before conflicts in Italy: Salerno, Anzio, and the lesserknown ‘Monte Cassino of the Adriatic’: Gemmano. Leading toward the 80th Anniversary of the Italian Campaign (1943-1945), relevant historic anecdotes and key operational recollections reveal a young, energetic 303 Anti-Tank Battery Commander’s personal perspectives, and the first officer in his Territorial Regiment to receive a battle honour. This remarkable, first-hand account by the ‘poet of Wimbledon’ is intended as a special tribute to all brave men who served in the ‘Black Cats’ – and as a commemoration of the fallen. Born in Holland, R.E.H. Hadingham moved to England and grew up in Wimbledon, serving with the Black Cats during the Second World War. He later became chairman of Slazenger’s and the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon.

Conspiracy, Calamity and Cover-up The Truth Behind the Hess Flight to Scotland, May 10th 1941

The Hess affair requires an understanding of a variety of disciplines and practices: wartime aviation, political history and human psychology to name but three. Harris and Wilbourn have over an extended period tried to learn as much as possible about all relevant aspects of what is in concert a complicated subject, one that has not yet been satisfactorily explained even after more than 80 years. In the past there have been works that have concentrated on single aspects of the affair; usually in great detail, but in Conspiracy, Calamity and Cover-up the authors’ work on the individual components provides the best ever yet plausible explanation of the affair as a whole. Official secrecy on the grounds of ‘National Security’, obfuscation and downright lying have all played a part in preserving the truth behind the flight. Through dogged perseverance and endeavour Harris and Wilbourn now present what they believe is the ultimate truth behind the affair. John Harris and Richard Wilbourn have been researching the Rudolph Hess case since 1987, shortly after Hess died in Spandau, Berlin. Since then they have written six authoritative books on the Hess flight and mystery, including the recent top selling Rudolf Hess; The Truth At Last. When not so engaged, they have full time employments; Harris as a Chartered Accountant in Northamptonshire and Wilbourn a farms manager on a large Norfolk estate. Over the past 25 years they have made some major discoveries pertaining to the Hess affair and now are regularly quoted as reliable sources by others.

It'll All Be Over By Christmas

The First World War in Postcards JOHN WILTON Hardback 176 pp 210 x 148 mm | 5⅞ x 8¼ in 225 images Thema Codes: NHWR5, NHW, NH, A 978-1-914414-98-5 August 2022 £20.00 | $30.00

The cards in It'll All Be Over By Christmas help to paint a picture of war as experienced by those at home, in training, at the front, in hospital and in convalescent camps. There are cards from fathers who wrote to wives and children, and sons who wrote to family, friends and loved ones. Men at the front who received parcels from home and from well-wishers. All this is revealed by the writings on cards sent during the war years. The degree of support for the war effort is shown by the sending of ‘comforts’ to the men at the front by family, charitable organizations and the general public encouraged by newspapers and magazines. We see the willingness of the population to help fund the war through War Bonds and collections, as well as the practical service they were prepared to provide by working in the factories and on the farms, with women showing that they could do much more than just knit socks. On a lighter note, accounts of times of rest and relaxation fill many cards sent when the soldiers were back from the firing line and had time to enjoy the countryside and even eat cherries. John Wilton was born in Mandiville, Jamaica in 1942 and educated at St. Hugh’s and Edmund’s College, in Hertfordshire. After a short period in the army he entered teaching, working in Berkshire, Dorset and Sussex. On retirement after 40 years in teaching, including 10 years as a housemaster, he took up part time work in public relations and now finds time for writing and after-dinner speaking.

Published to mark the 150th anniversary of the launch of the Challenger expedition

Published to mark the 150th anniversary of the launch of the Challenger expedition, The Challenger Expedition: Exploring the Ocean’s Depths tells the story of the groundbreaking voyage that transformed our understanding of the deep sea. On December 1872, HMS Challenger, especially modified to support a team of civilian scientists, set sail from Portsmouth, England, to begin a round-the-world journey, unique in the scale of its ambition and scope. This book tracks the paths of six objects associated with the Challenger expedition, including the Baillie sounding machine, a starfish, a photographic album and HMS Challenger itself, to reveal the stories of the often hidden work, technologies and international collaboration at the heart of this nineteenth-century scientific endeavour. Lavishly illustrated with objects from the National Maritime Museum and significant collections around the world, this is a fascinating tale of scientific breakthroughs, global trade networks, empire and the legacy of the Challenger expedition on the modern study of oceanography. Dr Erika Jones is Curator of Navigation and Oceanography at Royal Museums Greenwich. She received her MSc in Environment, Science and Society from UCL and a BA in Environmental Science from Boston University. She was the recipient of a UK Arts and Humanities Research Council collaborative doctoral award with the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and UCL, during which time she undertook original research into the Challenger Expedition. Jones is co-editor of Women in the History of Science: A Sourcebook (UCL Press, 2022).

Royal Observatory Greenwich Illuminates series ANNA GAMMON-ROSS There are over 200 moons in our Solar System alone, but what is it that makes a moon a moon? Venture out into the Universe and there are moons of all shapes and sizes to discover. Some are made of rock, others ice and many of these natural satellites are home to curious features like active volcanoes and underground oceans. Why do some planets have no moons and others dozens? How do moons form? Is it possible for a moon to have its own moon? And how much more is there yet to be discovered? Starting with our own moon, Anna Gammon-Ross leads us on a journey through space to uncover the science behind these astronomical objects. Anna Gammon-Ross is a planetarium astronomer at Royal Observatory Greenwich. She’s literally a rocket scientist, with a masters degree in Space Exploration Systems from the University of Leicester, studying both human and robotic spacecraft engineering. George Bunting, businessman, husband and father, lives a quiet life at home in Laburnam Villa in Essex, reading about the progress of the war in his trusty Siren newspaper and heading to work every day at same the warehouse where he has been employed for his entire adult life. Viewed with an air of slight amusement by his three children, Mr Bunting’s war efforts comprise mainly of digging for victory and reluctantly erecting a dugout in the garden. But as the Second World War continues into the summer of 1940, the Battle of Britain rages in the skies and the bombs begin to reign down on London, this bumbling ‘everyman’ is forced to confront the true realities of the conflict. He does so with a remarkable stoicism, imbuing him with a quiet dignity. This reprint of a 1941 classic includes an introduction from IWM putting the work in historical context and shedding a light on the wartime experiences of the quiet ‘everyman’ and his family on the British Home Front: He was not brilliant, nor heroic, but there was one thing he could do – endure. He could stick it out right to the end. It was the one thing he was good at, and it happened to be almost his sole duty.

If anybody wants to know what happened in other troops, or in other squadrons, it’s all recorded painstakingly in the War Diaries and lodged in a Records Office somewhere. Based on the author’s own experience with the British Army, Mailed Fist is reprinted in a new edition including an introduction from IWM, putting the work into historical context and shining a light on this fascinating experience of the Second World War. A Singular Man A Documented Life of the Artist Frederick Sandys, 1829–1904 BETTY ELZEA Hardback 256 pp 234 x 156 mm | 6⅛ x 9¼ in 95 images Thema Codes: AFCL, AFF, DNBF 978-1-838395-38-4 October 2022 £30.00 | $45.00

Delving into Frederick Sandys’s unconventional life, Betty Elzea’s research reveals much about his complicated and often scandalous relationships.

Born and educated in Norwich with an artisan background, Frederick Sandys was bohemian by nature, though through necessity appeared genteel and respectable. Unfortunately disorganised, un-businesslike and preferring as a bachelor in lodgings, he struggled to support two growing families of illegitimate children. From youth, developing skills as a draughtsman and painter, he moved to London, meeting Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites and their associates, while keeping a foothold in Norwich where he maintained friendships and enjoyed the support of the Norfolk gentry and several notable Norwich industrialists. Landscape painting and nature studies led to commissioned portraiture which became his main source of income. He is known for depictions of beautiful women in legendary disguises as well as meticulously-detailed portraits of elderly women. He also pioneered a new type of large-scale portrait drawing in chalks. Born in Delhi, Betty Elzea studied at Chelsea School of Art and the University of London before joining the staff of the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1956, and Brighton Museum in 1970. Her catalogue raisonné of Sandys’s work was published in 2001, the year that the Castle Museum, Norwich, put on a major Sandys exhibition to support its publication. In retirement, Betty completed her biography of the artist, helped by Sandys’s grandson, the late Anthony Crane, who gave her access to the family archive which she has since inherited and bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

A sparkling, transparent, rendering of Nietzsche’s poetic philosophical masterpiece. – Raymond Tallis

52 |

A new translation of this seminal work by the prize-winning translator of W.G. Sebald, Goethe, Rilke, Herta Müller and Elfriede Jelinek that celebrates Nietzsche as a still-radical philosopher. In Thus Spake Zarathustra, Nietzsche conducts his protagonist through his great journey of life – the quest for meaning, and fulfilment, and for a way to live with the knowledge of death. In this faithful new translation by Michael Hulse (the first ever by a poet), Zarathustra is revealed in all his bold and ironic splendour, as a man who strives to find a way to live – joyfully – in a secular world. Luminous and ecstatic, Thus Spake Zarathustra is a grand celebration of perilous, beautiful, human life by one of the most important philosophers in history. Friedrich Nietzsche was born in 1844 in Röcken, Germany. He studied classical philology at the universities of Bonn and Leipzig and in 1869 was appointed to the chair of classical philology at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He died in 1900. Michael Hulse is a poet, translator and critic. He has translated many works from the German, including titles by Goethe and Rilke. His translations have been shortlisted for every major translation award, including the PEN Translation Prize (US), the Aristeion Translation Prize and the Schlegel-Tieck Prize. Joanna Kavenna is the author of several works of fiction and nonfiction. Her short stories and essays have appeared in the New Scientist, the Guardian and the New York Times, amongst other publications. In 2008 she won the Orange Prize for New Writing, and in 2013 she was named as one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists.

Children are a wonder, a blessing, a miracle, and everyone has an opinion on how we should raise them. From novelists to paediatricians; from modern parenting ‘experts’ to child psychologists; from debunked academics to 1950s ‘agony aunts’, Tiny Feet is the first anthology of its kind, showcasing a range of the most influential writing about children over the past threehundred years. Published chronologically, the extracts featured in this delightful compendium show the extent to which some of our attitudes have changed while others remain absolute, and remind us of the joy that children have always brought to our lives. With an introduction by British actor and comedian Tracey Ullman, contributors include: Albert Bandura on imitation; Bruno Bettelheim on the value of fairy tales; Erik Erikson on the meaning of play; Marvin J. Gersh on how to raise children in your ‘spare time’; Good Housekeeping (1913) on how to have ‘better babies’; Naomi Stadlen on how parenting books undermine parenting by reducing it to a number of essential tasks; Julia Wrigley on the history of expert advice on children's intellectual development. Plus memoir, fiction and opinion from Anne Brontë, Noel Coward, Charles Dickens, Lydia Davis, Bernardine Evaristo, Louisa May Alcott, Maria Montessori, Bertrand Russell and many more. Robert Eddison’s off-the-wall gold mine of original aphorisms is peppered with rib-tickling illustrations and state-of-the-art Quick Response codes. The author is a journalist, public speaker, playwright and world-class aphorist. As a multilingual language-lover, he has coined around 40,000 original one-liners on 160 different subjects. His widely-published maxims range from political correctness to cannibalism.

Praise for Robert Eddison’s previous book, Wisdom & Wordplay: “I continue to salute your genius. You are my favourite living aphorist.” Gyles Brandreth
