The mission of the intercollegiate athletics program at the University of New Hampshire is to provide studentathletes a collegiate experience that is enriched by their participation in programs which are competitive at the NCAA Division I level both regionally and nationally. The intercollegiate athletics program also plays an important by enhancing the quality of life for the University and statewide community by being a source of pride and identification with the University while always maintaining high standards of academic scholarship and integrity. To fulfill its mission, the intercollegiate program must: 1. Provide student-athletes every opportunity to meet academic and athletic demands with the goal of graduating every student-athlete. 2. Provide resources necessary to field competitive teams with league affiliations, and to gain regional and national recognition. 3. Joshua Willman head coach 19th season
A 1984 graduate of the University of Miami (Florida), head coach Joshua Willman began his coaching career just after graduation at the YMCA and USA Swimming level. As an established Age Group and Senior team coach, Willman cultivated nationally ranked swimmers, many of whom went on to world rankings. In 1991, Willman made the transition to the collegiate arena at the University of New Hampshire. He first served as an assistant coach and was named head coach in 1992. Since that time, UNH’s swimming and diving program has experienced a steady climb to the top. UNH teams place consistently at the top of the America East conference and over the past 16 seasons, 18 Wildcat swimmers have been selected as the conference Swimmer of the Year. A number of milestones in particular mark UNH’s steady rise to the top. In 1995, Willman produced UNH’s first ever NCAA Division I qualifier, Denise Leckenby. Leckenby later went on to earn All-America honors in 1996 and placed eighth in the 200-freestyle as well as 11th in the 100-freestyle to earn UNH enough points to finish 27th in the nation at the 1996 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The Wildcats then won back-to-back America East championship titles in 1997-1998 and 1998-1999. New Hampshire native and breaststroke standout Kristen Zeimetz participated in the 2000 U.S. Olympic team trials. More recently, the Wildcat women’s team won the ECAC Championships in 2003 for the first time in school history and back-to-back America East titles again in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Also in 2006, New Hampshire qualified two swimmers for the NCAA Championships: senior Shannon Daly and sophomore Kary Goodman; both athletes placing in the top 25 in the nation. UNH completed the 2006 season ranked eighth nationally in the mid-major Division I Polls. This success has not gone unnoticed, as Willman has become the America East Conference’s most highly honored coach. He has been selected Coach of the Year ten times in the past 18 years (1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2010). Under his caring hand, UNH has erupted to the forefront of New England swimming and has burst onto the national scene. During Willman’s tenure, Wildcat swimmers have broken school records over 205 times, as well as 66 ECAC and 76 America East records. New Hampshire swimmers have earned NCAA Academic All-America honors, post-graduate scholarship awards and ranked as high as sixth nationally for grade-point-average. Coach Willman is a certified ASCA Level IV coach and has been a recipient of the ASCA Coaching Excellence Award.

Jarrod Zwirko assistant coach
Jarrod Zwirko, a 2004 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, returns for his third season as an assistant coach. Zwirko was a twoyear captain for the Wildcats, specializing in middle-distance and still holds two UNH records for relays. As an athlete Zwirko was an 11-time finalist at the America East championships and was runner-up in the 500yard freestyle in 2002. Zwirko also served as SAAC President as an undergraduate and was twice nominated for UNH Athlete of the Year. Upon completion of his eligibility, Jarrod entered the graduate program at UNH and earned his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology. During this time, he served as the graduate assistant for the UNH swim team and was an integral part of the staff that twice earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors for winning back-to-back America East Championship titles. His last season, UNH took two women to the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships. After completing his Master’s, Zwirko joined the staff at his former prep school, the Williston Northampton School in western Massachusetts. There he served for the past two years as an English teacher and swim coach. Most recently his team won the New England championships in the small school division.
Tory McKenna diving coach
Tory McKenna enters her second season as the diving coach of the Wildacts after serving as the graduate assistant coach two seasons ago while she completed her final year of eligibility for the Wildcats. At the 2009 America East Championships, she placed third in the 1-meter dive. A graduate of Syracuse University, Summa Cum Laude, McKenna double majored to receive a Bachelor of Science in communication sciences and disorders and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. While competing for Syracuse, McKenna was a Big East finalist on 3-meter and a Zone A Qualifier from 2005-2007. She set the Syracuse 1-meter record and the Villanova pool record in 2005. In high school, she was a two-time All-American and an East National Championship qualifier. McKenna began her coaching career at the Westford Swim and Tennis Club in 2001 and has worked with the New Hampshire based USA Diving Club and the Charles River Diving North and both Dover and Portsmouth High Schools where two of her divers won state titles in Division I and II in 2009. Tory is currently working towards her Master’s Degree in communication sciences and disorders here at UNH, where she is conducting research for acquired brain injury patients. At Syracuse she was on the dean’s List all eight semesters and during her first year with the UNH team, she was awarded the Coaches Award for her dedication, maturity and leadership qualities.

She has swum on some of the nation’s fastest high school relays and is a tremendous team player. She is part of the national record-holding 200 freestyle relay for 17-18 year olds set in 2007. Her talent in the breaststroke events will carry on the Wildcats’ strong tradition of top performing breaststrokers in the conference and at the national level. Nahin is a U.S. Open Qualifier and Junior National finalist swimming for Steve Bowman and Lake Country Swim Team. Allison says she came to UNH for its academic reputation but most importantly the great girls on the swim team and the improvement the swimmers experience at UNH. She attended École Catholique Jean-Vanier and was the high school champion in the 100 back in 2005 and 200 IM champion in 2006. Her versatility and experience will have an immediate impact on the Wildcats and will pump up UNH’s already dominant relays. A versatile and talented swimmer in many events, Little will continue New Hampshire’s tradition of producing some of the country’s top breaststrokers. Marty Scarano athletic director
Marty Scarano is in the midst of his 11th year as Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with academics, facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. According to numbers released in 2010, UNH athletics ranks highest in the America East Conference, the Colonial Athletic Association and second nationally among all public institutions, trailing only the U.S. Naval Academy, for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of its student athletes with a mark of 97 percent. Of its 20 current sport teams, 14 of them submitted perfect GSRs of 100 percent. UNH finished second in the America East Academic Cup this past season, achieving a 3.16 cumulative gradepoint average, which surpassed the league record for highest GPA. There have been over $8.5 million in capitol improvements since his hiring in the summer of 2000. In the fall of 2008, the Paul Sweet Oval renovation was completed to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. The total cost of the project exceeded $500,000. In the summer of 2007, the Cowell Stadium grass field was replaced with a $1 million Field Turf synthetic surface. Additionally in 2007, a complete renovation of Lundholm Gymnasium was undertaken. The $600,000 renovation included a new state-of-the-art bleacher system, new scoreboards, competition baskets and other aesthetic enhancements. Scarano brought about the completion of the $2.15 million Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility in the summer of 2000. The addition of a center-ice scoreboard and message board at the Whittemore Center was completed in 2001. In 2002, UNH athletics renovated Memorial Field along with the Bigglestone Plaza and Bremner Field on the former Upper Field. The two fields, which feature state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lighting, were built at a cost of $1.5 million apiece. In addition, construction was completed to enlarge and improve the women’s locker rooms in the UNH Field House. Two other major improvements to benefit UNH’s student-athletes have been the renovation of the Jerry Azumah Performance Center for Strength and Conditioning, which features state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment, new offices and design, and a complete overhaul of the Student-Athlete Academic Center. Scarano and the University are also in the midst of the planning and fundraising for a multi-purpose outdoor facility. Scarano has focused on moving UNH athletics into the collegiate national arena. To accomplish that goal, UNH has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships. The Wildcat athletic department was host of highly-successful NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regionals at the Verizon Wireless Arena (Manchester, N.H.) in 2004, 2007, 2009, and Manchester will once again be the site of the Northeast Regionals in 2011. UNH has had the opportunity to host two NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Fours in the Whittemore Center in 2002 and 2005. In addition, UNH successfully hosted the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championships in Washington Valley, as well as the 2005 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional, which took place at the Whittemore Center. This past season, men’s and women’s ice hockey, football, the men’s and women’s ski teams and gymnastics, as well as members of men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, all competed in the NCAA postseason. Because of these initiatives and accomplishments, UNH athletics has consistently been ranked in the top 90 programs among all Division I institutions in the battle for the NACDA Directors Cup, which is well ahead of nearly all of UNH’s conference opponents. This past season, the Wildcats ranked 72nd out of more than 370 Division I schools with 260.50 points, which were the most in program history, the best in America East and placed the ‘Cats in the top five among FCS teams. UNH ranked behind only Villanova, Princeton, Cornell and Harvard in the FCS subdivision. In New England, the Wildcats finished fourth behind Boston College, Connecticut and Harvard. Scarano’s many accomplishments during his tenure have played a key role in UNH being named one of the Top 20 Athletic Departments in the Country in U.S. News and World Report college athletics rankings in March 2002. UNH’s graduation rate for athletes has maintained levels at or exceeding 90 percent, which puts it among the nation’s best in Division I. The men’s ice hockey team won the regular season Hockey East title in 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008 and 2010, and then advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2002 and 2003. The Wildcat women’s hockey team won the Hockey East Tournament Championship four straight seasons from 2006-09, which also included Frozen Four appearances in 2006 and 2008. The women’s gymnastics team won its first-ever EAGL title in 2003, when the event was hosted at the Whitt. The volleyball team won an America East crown in 2002 and 2003 and went on to the NCAA tournament in those same seasons. The field hockey team made the NCAA’s in 2000, while women’s lacrosse made “The Big Dance” in 2004 and again in 2008. UNH football returned to national prominence and was ranked No. 1 in the nation for parts of three seasons from 2005-07, made it to the NCAA FCS playoffs the last six years, including the quarterfinals five times in that span, and also won its fifth consecutive game against an FBS opponent in 2009. Additionally, 21 coaches have won 58 Coach of the Year awards during Scarano’s tenure. In 2007, Scarano was named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano was also awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Scarano also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-06 and 2006-07. Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. The college’s athletic program excelled both in and out of the classroom under his supervision and six different athletic facilities received renovations, including the Schlessman Pool, Washburn Field, the Carle Weight Room and a new press box at Stewart Field. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced several All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. During Scarano’s tenure at Colorado College, the men’s ice hockey team became a regular at the NCAA men’s ice hockey championships. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have two daughters, Lynden, a junior at UNH, and Corey, and a son, Kyle.

John Ciani
strength and conditioning coach John Ciani is entering his ninth year with the University of New Hampshire athletic department. After four years as an assistant coach in the University’s strength and conditioning office, Ciani was promoted to the position of Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning in 2006. Ciani’s efforts have been key in guiding UNH student-athletes to NCAA appearances in both men’s and women’s ice hockey, football, gymnastics, women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, skiing and track and field. Coach Ciani is very passionate about his commitment to strength and conditioning. He has taken his wide range of experiences to come up with a distinct sport-specific training philosophy. In conjunction with the coaching staff, Ciani develops individualized training programs depending on the athlete’s initial evaluation, experience level and current athletic ability. Under Ciani’s program, improvement is not based on the weight on the bar, but rather how injury resistant the student-athlete is and his/her athletic performance. Strength and conditioning programs designed by Ciani utilize all facets of training, from conventional strength training and Olympic Weightlifting to simple conditioning and sport-specific metabolic runs that enhance the athlete’s abilities during competition. No single training style dominates the program; Ciani uses a combination of all training techniques for the total development of the student-athlete. Ciani was a featured speaker at the Vermont State Clinic for the National Strength & Conditioning Association in June of 2010. The Sports Performance clinic, which was held at the University of Vermont Varsity Weight Room, was attended by athletic trainers strength coaches, personal trainers, and other fitness professionals across the New England area. In addition to Ciani, the clinic included presentations from strength coaches from Boston College, Dartmouth and Boston University. Ciani, a native of the San Diego, Calif. area, came to UNH after a stint as assistant strength coach at the University of North Dakota. During his tenure at UND, Ciani worked primarily with the 2001 Division II national championship football team, women’s volleyball and men’s basketball teams. In 2000, he began his career at Long Beach State as a graduate assistant working with the perennial national power women’s volleyball team, where he trained many All-American and national team level volleyball players, including Misty May. Ciani received his B.A. degree in Psychology from Long Beach State and attended graduate school at both Long Beach State and the University of North Dakota. John lives in Berwick, Maine with his wife, Angela and son, Brennan.
Cathy Leach
academic services Cathy Leach begins her ninth season at the University of New Hampshire and her first as Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support and Compliance. Leach has been working in Academic Support since joining the staff in 2003 and has also served as an assistant in the compliance department since 2004 helping with the day-to-day operations meeting NCAA compliance and certification. Leach returned to UNH athletics in 2001 as the tutoring coordinator for two years. Prior to her time in academic support, Leach worked in the UNH admissions office for 11 years. She also served as the interim women’s Athletic Director for one year (1989-1990). She also worked in the Wildcat Sports Information Office for three years beginning in 1985, marking her first job on UNH’s campus. Leach is a graduate of Springfield College with a degree in English/Sports Journalism. Leach, a native of Hanover, N.H., is married to Dave Leach and they have a daughter Taryn (11).

Carrie Doyle
senior woman administrator Carrie A. Doyle began her duties at The University of New Hampshire in July 2004 as the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance, and has brought organization and structure to the functioning of the department’s compliance effort. In August 2006, she was promoted to Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance. Doyle is primarily responsible for the administration of over $8 million dollars of athletic scholarships, the eligibility certification process for approximately 525 student-athletes, and the education and monitoring of 70 coaches and 20 sports. She also supervises the administration of the $75,000 NCAA Special Assistance Fund and $180,000 NCAA Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund. She is responsible for preparing all National Letters of Intent as well as initial and renewal financial aid agreements. Doyle has worked with the University’s computer information services staff the last four years to automate many of the systems in the compliance office, which has increased efficiency and accuracy of the staff ’s compliance efforts. One of the most important projects was to automate the transfer of academic data and financial aid data from Banner (the University’s database) into the NCAA’s Compliance Assistant - Internet database (the data the staff uses to ensure compliance with NCAA academic and financial aid rules). UNH has implemented enhancements to this “bridge” program in each of the last three years, and has provided this source code to more than 150 other colleges/universities nationwide. Doyle also oversees the data collection and analysis of the NCAA’s institutional Graduation Success Rate (GSR), the Academic Progress Rate (APR), and IPEDS (Federal Graduation Rate data), which are reported annually to the NCAA and Department of Education. Doyle spearheaded the development of a computer program that automates the annual data collection for each of these reports, saving time and increasing accuracy of this data collection process. As the department’s Senior Woman Administrator, Doyle serves on the department’s senior management team and is responsible for the department’s compliance with Title IX and gender equity issues. Doyle was part of the effort in 2004 and 2005 that closed the University’s 10-year long monitoring case with the Department of Civil Rights, and helped to bring the University into full compliance with Title IX (in 2006-07). Doyle’s athletics background includes a 12-year stint at the NCAA National Office from 1987-1999. She was an NCAA enforcement representative (investigator) on the association’s enforcement staff for the first seven years, and then spent five years as the Director of Student-Athlete Reinstatement. During Doyle’s seven years as an investigator, she processed 10 cases: seven cases were presented in front of the NCAA Committee on Infractions and three cases were processed by summary disposition. As the Director of Student-Athlete Reinstatement, Doyle was responsible for the administration of the reinstatement process and administrative review panel process, and was the primary staff liaison to the Division I, II and III Student-Athlete Reinstatement Subcommittees and the Division I, II and III Administrative Review Subcommittees (now called the Subcommittee for Legislative Relief ). Doyle currently serves on the NCAA Division I Legislative Council (2008-2012), which is the second most powerful body in the NCAA structure (along with the NCAA Leadership Council) and this group reports directly to the NCAA Board of Directors. She recently served (2006-2009) on the Division I Amateurism Fact Finding Committee, which resolves factual issues related to amateurism eligibility center cases. Doyle did her undergraduate work (1982 - BS in Education, minor in Business Management) at The State University of New York, College at Cortland, and her graduate work (1986 - MA in Athletics Administration, and 1987 - MBA) at the University of Iowa.

Jerry Azumah Performance Center The Jerry Azumah Performance Center opened its doors in the summer of 2003 to UNH student-athletes. A monetary donation by Azumah, a former cornerback of the Chicago Bears and the 1999 recipient of the Walter Payton Award (top football player in Div. 1-AA), allowed the UNH athletic department to overhaul its existing strength and conditioning center. The newlyrenovated Jerry Azumah Athletic Performance Center features state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment provided through the generous gift of Azumah.
Swasey Pool
The Henry C. Swasey Pool is the home of the New Hampshire Wildcats’ swim team. Located in UNH’s Field House, the 25-yard, eight lane pool with an attached 13-foot deep diving well includes new one and three meter duraflex boards and Paragon starting platforms. Completing the facility is a 650 seat balcony for specator seating at home meets. The facility was recently renovated in the summer of 2007 and the spring of 2008. In addition to the indoor natatorium, the UNH swim team uses the 50 meter outdoor Jenny Thompson Pool just off campus in Dover, N.H.
