The early 20th century saw a decade that witnessed global revolution. From the Mexican Revolution in 1910 and the Xinhai Revolution in 1911 to the start of World War I in 1914 and the Russian Revolution in 1917, the world was convulsing with change. This torment was reflected in the arts, including the world of ballet. On May 29, 1913, Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes took to the stage in Paris to give the first performance of The Rite of Spring, choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky to a score by Igor Stravinsky. The shock wave unleashed that evening is still being felt today. In the centennial year of this premiere, Carolina Performing Arts at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill presents The Rite of Spring at 100 (Rite 100) as part of our eighth season. Rite 100 will include 15 performances by world-renowned artists, who will be revisiting, re-examining and responding imaginatively to the Stravinsky-Nijinsky masterpiece. We will present nine world premieres, two U.S. premieres and 11 works commissioned by Carolina Performing Arts specifically for Rite 100. We will explore a variety of themes related to The Rite of Spring throughout the year. Choreographer Bill T. Jones and theater director Anne Bogart will bring their companies together for the first time for a personal and visceral meditation on The Rite. The string quartet Brooklyn Rider will present an evening entitled Make It New!, tracing how this Modernist imperative has been absorbed in new works by Colin Jacobsen, Shara Worden and Gabriel Kahane. The season also includes an unparalleled opportunity to experience the most distinctive versions of The Rite, performed by the Joffrey Ballet, Compagnie Marie Chouinard and Martha Graham Dance Company.

The Rite of Spring is only the beginning. Our 12/13 season features highly anticipated performances by returning artists such as legendary Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romatique. The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Monteverdi Choir in one of only three stops on their U.S. tour. We will also welcome several new faces to Memorial Hall this year, including indie bluegrass band the Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile. We continue to deepen our relationship with the academy and are very excited to be partnering with the Center for Global Initiatives and the Center for the Study of the American South to host two performances as part of the annual Global American South Conference. The Carolina Chocolate Drops will perform with fellow returning artist Vusi Mahlasela, “The Voice” of South Africa. The following evening, Abigail Washburn will return to perform with Kai Welch alongside Wu Fei, an internationally acclaimed guzheng master. We gratefully acknowledge our university partners for Rite 100, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. THE RITE of SPRING? Le Sacre du printemps On a hot Paris evening in 1913, a riot broke out at the ballet. At the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, members of Serge Diaghilev’s legendary dance troupe, the Ballets Russes, stamped their feet and jumped to a wild orchestral score. Shaken by Igor Stravinsky’s unorthodox music and scandalized by Vaslav Nijinsky’s audacious choreography, audience members shouted out their protests, while others rose up in defense. Punches were thrown; the police were called. On its opening night, The Rite of Spring secured its place in history. The outraged spectators must have known they were witnessing something important: Stravinsky’s score inspired countless composers and quickly assumed its place as a canonic work in the orchestral repertoire. The Rite of Spring has been choreographed more than any other music of the past century. From its ethereal bassoon solo opening to the sacrificial finale – in which a young girl dances herself to death – The Rite of Spring has captured the imagination of artists and audiences for the last century. The Rite of Spring was both an end and a beginning: a farewell to the ballet tradition and the Romantic orchestral works of the 19th century, and the birth of the avant-garde movement in the 20th. It brought together the work of three great artists: composer Stravinsky, choreographer Nijinsky and visual artist and costume designer Nicholas Roerich. In re-interpreting archaic iconography and Russian folk traditions, the creators found an artistic language wholly modern, in step with a decade marked by the sinking of the Titanic and the horrors of World War I. Looking back after a century, The Rite of Spring appears more relevant than ever.

The Rite of Spring was significant not just as a riot-inspiring act of modernism, but also for its embrace of the interdisciplinary. Igor Stravinsky, Vaslav Nijinsky and Nicholas Roerich brought cutting-edge visuals and music together on a single stage. In the spirit of this cross-medium collaboration, Carolina Performing Arts and UNC-Chapel Hill will present a year-long centennial commemoration of The Rite of Spring, embracing all aspects of the multifaceted work. From September 2012 through May 2013, UNC’s campus will be home to performances, academic conferences and courses exploring the impact of The Rite and what the work means today. Carolina Performing Arts has commissioned 11 new works from important artists across the globe – choreographer Bill T. Jones and director Anne Bogart, puppeteer Basil Twist, composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, among others – who reimagine The Rite, bringing a contemporary flavor to the 1913 masterpiece. The Rite of Spring at 100 will present international dance companies’ reinterpretations of the original ballet and a reconstruction of Nijinsky’s groundbreaking choreography by the Joffrey Ballet. The UNC campus is actively participating in the discussion of the impact of The Rite of Spring and its historical lineage through artistic residencies, masterclasses, interdisciplinary course offerings and two major academic conferences taking place in Chapel Hill and Moscow. The Rite of Spring at 100 celebrates the dawn of modernism through an exploration of artistic creation and scholarly dialogues that will foretell what awaits us in the future.

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart

The National Theatre of Scotland returns to Carolina Performing Arts after their performances of Black Watch in 2011, this time with David Greig’s award-winning The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart. Conceived as an evening of “anarchic theater, live music and strange goings-on,” the play explores the politics and romance played out at an academic conference devoted to the Border Ballads – the traditional folklore songs celebrating the raids, feuds, seductions and elopements between the Scottish and English border. Staged at Top of the Hill Back Bar, this play both investigates and imitates its subject, telling old tales with distinctly modern overtones in classic ballad rhymes. In the depths of Midwinter’s Eve, all the conference attendees are snowed in at the town’s one pub, and the devil is at play as the pagan celebration takes hold. Prudencia must choose between the world of her peers and the traditions she yearns for. global views

The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma

The highly acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble, featuring multiple Grammy Award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma, will present a thrilling combination of world and classical music traditions. The concert program includes the world premiere of The Seasons, a piece by Uzbekistan’s Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky commissioned for The Rite of Spring at 100. The three major sections of The Seasons represent summer, autumn and winter, each inspired by one of the nine folk tunes Stravinsky used in composing The Rite of Spring. The sections are titled after poems by Nicholas Roerich, designer of the original 1913 costumes and set. Roerich, who is credited with the central creative vision behind The Rite of Spring, spent much of his life traveling through central Asia, a compelling reflection of the legacy of multicultural inspiration at the heart of The Silk Road Ensemble’s musical vision. Elsewhere, a CelloOpera with Maya Beiser, cello directed by Robert Woodruff

Elsewhere, a “CelloOpera” written for Maya Beiser, a virtuosic cellist and diva of the avant-garde, and featuring vocalist Helga Davis, is a haunting new multimedia performance that stages two dramatic interpretations of apocalyptic visions. The initial movement unfolds in a series of letters from a woman watching her world slowly coming to an end, evoked in a lush composition by Eve Beglarian that features text by the Belgian surrealist Henri Michaux. The second act presents the story of Lot’s wife, who must bear witness to the violent end of her world, creating a conversation between two women who are separated by distance and time, and yet are joined by the urgency of their questions about the brutal nature of the world. Featuring an assemblage of original video, choreography and stage environments under the direction of Robert Woodruff, Elsewhere is a stunning showcase of postmodern collaboration.

Compagnie Marie Chouinard Returning to Memorial Hall, Compagnie Marie Chouinard presents two of Chouinard’s most highly regarded works, pairing a new interpretation of Nijinksy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (1994) with The Rite of Spring (1993). The concentration of soloists is one of the most dynamic aspects of Chouinard’s version of “this hymn of life,” as she refers to the original The Rite of Spring, making Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, a solo set to Claude Debussy’s score, an ideal accompaniment. Chouinard’s work explores the relationship of the body’s vital energy with space, creating “pathways toward freedom and compassion, where humor is possible and Eros omnipresent.”

Punch Brothers

featuring Chris Thile Punch Brothers are the New York City-based quintet of mandolinist Chris Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny and violinist Gabe Witcher. As the five members, ranging in age from their mid-20s to mid-30s, have matured together on the road and in the studio, their approach to writing and performing has, conversely, become looser, simpler, and, in a sense, more unaffectedly youthful. Their music features rumbling bass, skittering violin, and wailing multi-tracked vocals that sounds like hard-charging string-band punk rock. The group, as virtuosic as it is freewheeling, evolved out of a 2007 collaboration on Thile’s string-band suite, The Blind Leading the Blind, which premiered at Carnegie Hall in a series curated by composer John Adams. Punch Brothers are currently featured on the soundtrack to The Hunger Games and the Chieftains’ 50th anniversary disc, Voice Of Ages. ❉ HIGH ENERGY

The Studio for New Music Ensemble, founded in 1993 by composer Vladimir Tarnopolski, is one of the leading contemporary music groups in Russia and is directly influenced by Stravinsky’s legacy of creating experimental compositions. Currently serving as the ensemble-in-residence at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, the group performs programs throughout Russia and appears frequently at Western music festivals. The ensemble has premiered more than 150 new works, while also championing the avant-garde music of the early 20th century Russian composers. The Studio for New Music Ensemble will perform during the opening event of Reassessing The Rite: A Centennial Conference.

Under the inspired direction of Valery Gergiev, St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Orchestra, one of the oldest and pre-eminent symphony orchestras in Russia, returns to Memorial Hall for two nights with programs that include the U.S. premieres of new works by Matthias Pintscher and Rodion Shchedrin. Co-produced by Carolina Performing Arts and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival for The Rite of Spring at 100, Pintscher’s composition takes the two-trumpet theme from The Rite of Spring as its inspiration and will be featured alongside works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Richard Strauss. Rodion Shchedrin’s Cleopatra and the Asp, written for orchestra and soprano, highlights the second night’s performance and will be followed by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 and a closing performance of The Rite of Spring score.

Hailed as a true superstar of classical music, Joshua Bell is one of the world’s most celebrated violinists and was recently named Music Director at The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. Bell is equally at home as a soloist, with a chamber music ensemble or conducting an orchestra. Pierre-Laurent Aimard, piano One of the most decorated pianists in contemporary music, Pierre-Laurent Aimard brings an exploration of Modernist synesthesia for The Rite of Spring at 100. The program includes Claude Debussy’s Préludes, Book II focusing on the relationship of image and color to sound. This work embodies the restless spirit of Stravinsky’s compositions and the Modernist desire to conceive of new and startling interpretations. PierreLaurent Aimard’s virtuoso abilities as a soloist will be on full display in this ambitious program. Gilberto Gil – For All Growing up in the Brazilian region of Bahia, Gilberto Gil began playing accordion and emulating the music of baião pioneer Luiz Gonzaga at an early age. Infused with the diverse influences of northeastern Brazil – indigenous instrumentation, West African rhythms and European folk music – baião reflects Gilberto Gil’s longstanding cultural explorations through the lens of music. Recognized for his unique abilities to blend quintessential Brazilian genres, including bossa nova and samba, with elements of rock ’n’ roll and jazz, Gil was one of the founders of the influential Tropicália movement of the 1960s, an avant-garde fusing of the traditional and the experimental. Since first being recognized with the prestigious Van Cliburn prize in 1966, Lupu has performed regularly with the world’s major orchestras and as a soloist and recitalist at leading music festivals. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company A Meditation on The Rite of Spring (working title), a full-length collaborative work commissioned by Carolina Performing Arts, combines choreography from the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company with the ensemble-based theater work of SITI Company and Anne Bogart. This world premiere presents a deconstruction of the original score of The Rite of Spring, giving voice to author Jonah Lehrer’s claim that a central tenet of Stravinsky’s work is the realization that “the engine of music is conflict, not consonance.” The development of this work took place, in part, at UNC-Chapel Hill through a series of collaborative residencies hosted by Carolina Performing Arts. Bringing together these influential artists for the first time, this collaboration is a daring combination of original work from two of the most accomplished figures in the world of dance and theater. The Carolina Chocolate Drops have achieved one of the most impressive feats in contemporary music, creating an authentic body of work steeped in the Piedmont blues tradition while also managing to reinvent the very sound they set out to honor. Winners of a 2010 Best Traditional Folk Album Grammy for their Nonesuch debut Genuine Negro Jig, the trio added several guest musicians for their follow-up recording Leaving Eden, leading to even more revelatory imaginings of the role traditional AfricanAmerican string band music can play in a modern context. With work featured on the soundtrack to The Hunger Games and a recent run opening for Bob Dylan, the Carolina Chocolate Drops are showing just how vast their musical vision can be. For this performance, the Carolina Chocolate Drops are joined on stage by Vusi Mahlasela, a South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist. Simply known as “The Voice” in his home country, Mahlasela was a leader in the anti-apartheid movement in the 1980s, and now is spreading his message globally about the human struggle for freedom and dignity.

The program for The Rite of Spring at 100 features the world premiere of a new work by Vijay Iyer, one of the most exciting jazz pianists of our time. Iyer returns to Memorial Hall for the third time and presents his Carolina Performing Arts commissioned piece inspired by the Holi festival, which is the Hindu festival of colors; it will be performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). The new work is accompanied by multimedia footage of a Holi festival in Mathura, a town in Uttar Pradesh, India, and created by filmmaker Prashant Bhargava. Additionally, the program will include works by recent ICE collaborators Tyshawn Sorey and Steve Lehman. Founded in 1959, Nederlands Dans Theater I is at the forefront of contemporary dance and has long been recognized for its innovative work. The company returns to Memorial Hall for two nights after performing in 2011. The April 3 program will feature the U.S. premiere of a new work commissioned by Carolina Performing Arts and created by dancer and choreographer Medhi Walerski and composer Joby Talbot. Walerski and Talbot will explore The Rite of Spring through a contemporary lens while using the music’s kinetic energy as inspiration. The evening also includes Memoires d’Oubliettes (2009) by Jiri Kylian and Speak for Yourself (1999) by Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot. A third-generation puppeteer, Basil Twist is the only American to graduate from France’s École Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette. One of the most creative performers in contemporary theater, Twist’s work engages every conceivable element, including water and wind. In 1984, Martha Graham premiered her choreography to The Rite of Spring at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center to a standing ovation. Not seen by audiences since 1993, her Rite will return to the stage at Memorial Hall, featuring Graham stars Blakeley White-McGuire and Xiaochuan Xie in the lead role on different evenings. This remount of The Rite of Spring will include the work’s original costumes by Halston. The Graham Company will also perform Appalachian Spring — one of Graham’s most celebrated masterpieces — featuring Aaron Copeland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning score and a set design by Isamu Noguchi. Myth & Transformation will also feature the beloved Graham classic Appalachian Spring; the world premiere of a work choreographed by Nacho Duato, featuring the music of Arvo Pärt performed by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carolina Choir; and performances by guest artist Wendy Whelan, principal dancer for the New York City Ballet. *Please note a special start time.

Ticket Mailing vs. Ticket Pick Up

regularly sends updated performance related information via email a few days before the event. Please be sure that the Box Office has your correct email address on file. You can update by calling the Box Office at 919-843-3333 or sending an email to cpa_emails@unc.edu.

Your subscription tickets will be mailed during the week of June 4–8, 2012, before tickets to individual performances go on sale to the general public. Any ticket orders received fewer than 10 days prior to the performance will be held at Will Call, which opens 90 minutes prior to the published performance start time.

Ticket Exchanges

Lost or Misplaced Tickets

Subscribers may exchange tickets free-of-charge up to 72 hours before the performance. Non-subscribers may exchange single tickets for a $10 fee.

Call the Memorial Hall Box Office at 919-843-3333 to have duplicate tickets waiting for you at Will Call. Duplicate tickets cannot be mailed.

We ask that you notify the Box Office of your intent to make an exchange at least 72 hours prior to the performance. You can call or email during normal business hours at 919-843-3333 or CPAtixquestions@unc.edu.

Faculty & Staff tickets

The value of the ticket(s) may be applied to the purchase of another performance or will be held as a CPA credit until the end of the 12/13 season. Credit must be redeemed by April 27, 2013. For information about exchanging tickets, please call the Box Office at at 919-843-3333 or email CPAtixquestions@unc.edu.

Ticket Donations/Unused Tickets Unused tickets may be donated to CPA as a taxdeductible contribution until the published start time of the performance. Unused tickets that are returned after the performance are not eligible for a CPA credit or taxdeductible contribution.

Refunds Due to the nature of performing arts, programs and artists are subject to change. If an artist cancels an appearance, CPA will make every effort to substitute that performance with a comparable artist. Refunds will be offered only if a substitute cannot be found, or in the event of a date change. Handling fees are not refundable. CPA will not cancel performances or refund tickets because of inclement weather unless the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s campus closes.

Several discount options are available to UNC-Chapel Hill faculty (active and retired) and staff. Save up to 25% off the general public ticket prices when purchasing one of our Series Subscriptions or a “Create Your Own” package. Faculty and staff may order through the website or direct from the Memorial Hall Box Office. Please note: A valid UNC OneCard must be presented at the time of purchase to receive these discounts.

UNC Student Tickets are just $10 UNC-Chapel Hill student tickets to Carolina Performing Arts performances are just $10. A portion of each student’s fees supports this ticket price, so it is offered exclusively to Carolina students. A valid UNC OneCard must be presented to receive the student ticket price. Don’t miss this once-in-lifetime opportunity.

Group Tickets Groups of 10 people or more receive discounts ranging from 10% to 25% off the general public ticket price. All group tickets must be purchased together and in advance by calling the box office at 919-843-3333 or by sending your request to CPAGroupSales@unc.edu. Group ticketing requests are subject to availability.

Accessibility Wheelchair-accessible seating is available. Please advise a Box Office sales associate of your needs when you purchase your tickets. Memorial Hall is equipped with infrared listening systems provided free of charge. We have a limited supply of headsets that should be reserved in advance through the Box Office.

Late Seating Once a performance has begun, late seating opportunities are limited and may occur only during specific times. Be sure to plan your arrival time to allow for traffic/parking. Ticketed seating locations are not guaranteed once the performance begins. Refunds will not be given to latecomers.

Electronic Devices Use of mobile phones, pagers, alarms and electronics of any kind is prohibited during performances. Even when silenced, these devices emit distracting light. If you are concerned about missing an emergency call, you may leave your name, device and seat location with an usher and he or she will alert you if a call comes through. Photography, videography and recording devices are prohibited during performances. Violation will result in ejection without reentry.

Reminders Children old enough to enjoy performances are welcome. A ticket must be purchased for any children attending a performance and the child must be seated where a parent or guardian can supervise them. Babes in arms are not permitted. So that all patrons may enjoy the performance, please hold discussions and texting until after the performance ends; refrain from rustling wrapping paper during a performance; and be modest with your use of fragrances when attending performances.

At Carolina Performing Arts, we strongly believe that bringing great artists to the Memorial Hall stage is not enough. We must also develop ways for our audiences to build a deeper, more robust relationship and understanding of the arts at Carolina. We aim to achieve this by providing opportunities to connect our audiences, our students and our faculty with the world-renowned artists that visit our campus. These relationships are built and enhanced through artist interactions and with partnerships and collaborations with arts organizations across the Triangle, the United States and the world.

To help our patrons explore the historical and cultural backdrop along with in-depth looks into artist inspirations, Carolina Performing Arts presents FREE public conversations in our Program Notes LIVE series. These intimate, inspirational discussions with artists, scholars and historians often in collaboration with other schools and colleges across the campus and region, help provide a deeper look into the creation, history and meaning of the works presented on the Memorial Hall stage.

Pre-Performance Talks

Free to all ticket holders, these half-hour discussions with guest artists, UNC faculty and local arts experts provide an in-depth look into the performance that evening. These insightful programs continue to grow in popularity.

Post-Performance Q&A with the Artists

Following select Carolina Performing Arts performances, artists return to the stage to take questions from the audience. These intimate views into the artist experience provide viewpoints that further define the work just performed and offer a true â&#x20AC;&#x153;backstageâ&#x20AC;? glimpse of the artists and their performances.

Student Impact

The impact of the arts on a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education can be immeasurable. For $10, where else but in college can a student experience performances by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Yo-Yo Ma, Carolina Chocolate Drops and many, many others. Where else are students able to meet and participate in artist lectures, demonstrations and masterclasses? We feel strongly that the arts can be a core ingredient in preparing our students for life beyond the University walls. The impact is long lasting and powerful.

Masterclasses

This series of workshops and masterclasses highlight diverse styles taught by acclaimed artists visiting our campus. These unique classes provide the rarest of opportunities for students and community members to work closely with artists that perform on the Memorial Hall stage. These exciting events introduce artists to the campus and the local community. They share their knowledge of through masterclasses technique workshops and free public lectures. This series provides experience, education and fun for local arts enthusiasts of all levels and ages.
