SINCE 2005, WE HAVE PRESENTED: 659 PERFORMANCES BY 409 ARTISTS FROM 55 COUNTRIES, COMMISSIONED 51 WORKS, HOSTED 42 WORLD OR US PREMIERES, AND WORKED WITH THOUSANDS OF UNC STUDENTS THROUGH OUR ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS
Since our founding in 2005, we have partnered with artists across the world, created a home for cutting-edge artist residencies, and become a leader amongst our international peers. Throughout our first 14 seasons, we never ceased to evolve in how we approach our work. In the 19/20 season, we'll continue our dedication to exploration and growth, as believers in art that pushes boundaries, provokes discussion, and engages one's curiosity. Further, CPA supports work that invites co-creation and immersion at all levels, whether that is made manifest through an intimate performance that strips away barriers between artist and audience, or an experience that calls on you to take risks through participation. Perhaps most importantly, we believe that the arts should be for all people. As we approach the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 2020, we also celebrate the creative leadership of women throughout the season (see p. 30 for more). And as we close this landmark year, we’ll honor our history of presenting the world’s greatest classical artists and ensembles with performances by the London Symphony Orchestra, led by Sir Simon Rattle, and acclaimed pianist Lang Lang.

WORLD PREMIERE COMMISSIONED BY CAROLINA PERFORMING ARTS
The 19th Amendment—which opened the door for many women to vote—was not ratified in North Carolina until 1971. The inaugural outdoor art installation by Carolina Performing Arts, 1971's large-scale projections will pay homage to women who have blazed a trail in the work for voting rights in our state. Part of acclaimed projection artist Craig Walsh’s Monuments series, subjects were chosen by a curatorial panel representing the Carolina Women’s Center, UNC Department of History, and the Southern Oral History Project.

Tierra Whack is leading a generation of young artists remaking the music industry. Vocalist Alicia Olatuja is known for blending the earthy with the sublime. With Intuition, the acclaimed singer, composer, and arranger has crafted a statement of female empowerment at a pivotal moment in our cultural history. Through her soulful lens, Olatuja celebrates the contributions of icons and rebels like Sade, Imogen Heap, Tracy Chapman, Kate Bush, and many others.

In this riveting performance created by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, repetition plays the lead role. A seminal postmodern work, Rosas danst Rosas is unequivocally feminine—four women dancers engage in a dialogue of fierce movements that are countered by small everyday gestures. The exhaustion and perseverance that come with it create an emotional tension that contrasts sharply with the rigorous structure of this choreography by an internationally renowned dancemaker.

This bold, highly collaborative work explores universal themes through the shared language of music and dance. In 2017, we launched our first Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded artist residency: the DisTIL fellowship, an ambitious reimagining of the relationships between artists and the university that gives artist and faculty alike rare opportunities to inform their work through the other’s expertise during immersive visits. CAROLINA PERFORMING ARTS IS PROUD TO BE A NATIONAL LEADER IN ENVISIONING AND FORGING COLLABORATIVE ARTIST RESIDENCIES. CREATIVE FUTURES
Launched in 2018 and funded through a new $1.5 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, this initiative brings a transformative vision of community engagement, featuring collaborative creation in the arts, informed by faculty research. Groundbreaking artists Helga Davis, Shara Nova, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Toshi Reagon are assembling “triangular collaborations” that include members of UNC’s faculty engaged in community-based research as well as local partners. Through these co-creative partnerships, they are actively engaged in identifying multi-year projects that will invest in the community and its residents and thrive long beyond the life of the grant.

Featuring dozens of compositions by women around the globe—including Chen Yi, Meredith Monk, Bernice Johnson Reagon, and Clara Schumann—pianist Sarah Cahill’s The Future is Female is both a ritual installation and communal feminist immersive listening experience. A “marathon” five-hour performance meant to be experienced uniquely, guests can enter and exit at will, sit, stand, and even explore the performance space. FANM D’AYITI NATHALIE JOACHIM WITH SPEKTRAL QUARTET A new evening-length work created by Nathalie Joachim of Flutronix, Fanm d’Ayiti (Women of Haiti) is a celebration of some of Haiti’s most iconic yet under-recognized female artists, through new musical arrangements and recorded interviews. At the same time, the project is a deeply personal exploration of Joachim’s Haitian heritage, featuring original songs incorporating the recorded voices of Joachim’s grandmother and the girls choir of her family’s home farming village of Dantan. With its inspired use of dance, music, text, and visual design, Big Dance Theater returns to Carolina Performing Arts with Antigonick: a “pop-up play under construction” of renowned poet and classicist Anne Carson’s one-act, radical-feminist, philosophical take on Sophocles’ Antigone. Using Carson’s text, Annie-B Parson braids disparate strands into a multi-dimensional performance featuring the deft wit and imagination for which Big Dance Theater is known. Featuring the sensational Helga Davis as "Edna" ruminating on her storied life and acclaimed performer Justin Hicks as a young Hilton, this intimate work-in-progress is set against pivotal moments in American history.

In As One, two voices share the part of a sole transgender protagonist, tracing Hannah’s experiences from her youth in a small town to her college years. CPA’s staging of this powerful chamber opera will include locally based advisors and cast members, including Marc Callahan from UNC’s Department of Music (in the role of Hannah Before) and earspace, the Raleighbased ensemble directed by UNC alumnus Vincent Povázsay. This production is supported by the Carolina Women's Center.

With her 18-member jazz collective, the renowned bandleader defies categorization. One of few artists to have earned Grammys in multiple categories, Schneider is known for tailoring her compositions to highlight the unique talents of her orchestra's members.

COMMUNITY: ART MADE BY CHAPEL HILL, FOR CHAPEL HILL Set in a fictional town, Affordable Housing: The Musical asks us to see a “community problem” as our problem. Collaboratively developed by Chapel Hill-based nonprofits Community Empowerment Fund and the Marian Cheek Jackson Center, Affordable Housing is the culmination of a year-long process during which local residents artistically processed personal housing challenges. It epitomizes the mission of CURRENT, a dynamic home for immersive performing arts that don’t fit into the traditional theater format (November 23 & 24, 2019 at CURRENT ArtSpace + Studio).
CONVERSATION: IN MOTION WITH CAROLINA PERFORMING ARTS + DIDA Can dance move us to have meaningful conversations? This is a question that motivates CPA’s engagement team and our friends at Durham Independent Dance Artists (DIDA), an arts organization dedicated to raising the profile of independent dance locally. Over the course of 19/20, CPA + DIDA will host public conversations about contemporary dance after select performances. Join our MOVEMENT!
CLASSROOM: GOING BACK TO SCHOOL WITH FLUTRONIX To create their new work Discourse, Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull of Flutronix went back to school to play student—and teacher. Over the course of a two-year residency at CPA, they researched everyday stories of resilience curated by UNC’s Southern Oral History Project; debated feminism, identity, and art with Professor Tanya Shields’s Women and Gender Studies students; and even became “embedded artists” in Professor Andrea Bohlman’s Music and Politics course. Through their openness and scholarship, UNC voices led Flutronix to artistic and personal discoveries. Visit page 43 to learn more about the premiere of this remarkable work.

CURRICULUM: ART AND PUBLIC SERVICE In 2015, the Buckley Public Service Scholars (BPSS) program at the Carolina Center for Public Service partnered with Carolina Performing Arts to create the Arts in Public Service Fellows, a program that encourages students to enrich their communities through the arts. Undergraduate Fellows attend at least two CPA performances, complete an arts-based skills training, and participate in mentorship sessions with arts administration professionals. Through this program, UNC students make deep connections between public service and the arts in order to recognize their overlapping transformational potential.

Created over a two-year residency at Carolina Performing Arts, the seeds of Discourse were planted in response to the fear, uncertainty, and frustration dividing the US.
