s you read this, we will have completed another academic year and awarded more than 1,800 undergraduate and graduate diplomas to a diverse group of students—by ethnicity, age, economic class, and geography— who will now set forth to shape the landscape of our communities. Among them are nurses, engineers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, public servants, scientists and the first graduates of the UMass School of Law. The question now— what will they all do with the gift of higher education? In this issue, we can see a glimpse of their future. In Bryony Bouyer ’86, the talented Hasbro executive featured in our cover story, we see up close the transformative impact of a UMass Dartmouth education on an individual and that individual’s impact on one of the most popular brands in the world. And you will meet Sheri McCoy ’80, who has risen up the leadership ranks at one of the world’s leading life science companies, and credits her UMass Dartmouth education with preparing her to lead. “Is scientific literacy at risk of extinction?” examines how our professors are addressing scientific illiteracy in this country, starting with their own students and reaching out to the community. The goal: a citizenry that confronts challenges such as climate change, renewable energy, and offshore oil production with strategies based on knowledge rather than political or ideological whim. In our Around the Campanile section, you will read about our new Living Classroom, carved into our campus woodlands, and providing our students with an inspiring location to consume fresh air and ideas; a group of students who rolled the world’s largest snowball, a lesson in perseverance and engineering that will serve them well; and progress on our bio-manufacturing center, which will create learning opportunities for current students and jobs for graduates. Our spring issue also includes our Annual Report on private giving. I am proud and heartened to say that we are seeing an increase in philanthropy, which is so important to our mission to keep high quality education accessible for those serious about learning and contributing our community. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of UMass Dartmouth, also available in multi-media format at umassd.edu/magazine. Please share these stories with others so that they can understand the value of our University to individuals and to society.

The Living Classroom comes alive Come outside into the classroom

he UMass Dartmouth Sustainability Initiative recently opened trails and paths and woodland areas on campus as part of “The Living Classroom.” A bridge between the University’s traditional education resources, the natural environment, and the larger community, the “The Living Classroom” will allow students and faculty to explore forest, agriculture and energy projects. As part of the initiative, students recently cleared walkways and trails on campus which will allow for nature walks and forest exploration as well as visits to an old farmstead and dam. In an effort to better connect the main campus with the woodlands and forests, students have designed signage and maps and catalogued plant and animal life. UMass

New s of N ote New UMass president to build on excellence Towson University President Robert L. Caret, recently named president of the fivecampus University system, plans to build on UMass strengths when he succeeds retiring UMass President Jack M. Wilson. “It is an honor to have been asked to lead this world-class and worldrenowned University system,” Dr. Caret said following his selection by the UMass Board of Trustees. “The University of Massachusetts is one of the nation’s premiere public research universities and provides a beacon of hope and opportunity for so many. I look forward to building upon its tradition of excellence in academics, research and public service.” “Dr. Caret is a distinguished and dynamic leader who will advance the mission of the University across the Commonwealth, building on the great work of President Wilson,” Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack said. “I look forward to working with him as we build higher education opportunities for our students and strengthen the economic and social fabric of our communities.“

Marine science dean named Dr. Steven Lohrenz, who served on a scientific team that responded to the Deep-water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, has been named the new Dean of the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST). Dr. Lohrenz is a full professor and leads a very active Department of Marine Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). “Dr. Lohrenz’s experience as a faculty member and researcher since 1987 has prepared him exceptionally well for his leadership roles at USM and nationally,“ said Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack. “We are very impressed with his ideas, his common sense leadership approach and creative energy.“ “I look forward to working with the talented and accomplished faculty and excellent staff and students“ Dr. Lohrenz said. “SMAST already has a strong reputation and solid record of accomplishment, and a bright future as a premier research and academic center of marine science.”

Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack welcomed incoming president Dr. Robert L. Caret on his first visit to the UMass Dartmouth campus in May. Dr. Caret explained his vision for the University to a receptive audience of faculty, staff, and students.

First-in-the-nation bio-manufacturing center Continuing to put the region on the map, the University recently announced plans to build a first-in-the-nation bio-manufacturing facility. “We are excited to get this project moving forward,“ said Chancellor Jean MacCormack, who was joined by Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Gregory Bialecki and local officials recently to announce the exciting plans. “This center will inspire our students and faculty to learn and discover, and it will create jobs that will keep our students in the region when they graduate.“ The $23 million, 22,000-square-foot UMass Dartmouth Bio-Manufacturing Center, which will house testing laboratories and education spaces, is designed to accelerate the development of the life science industry in the region, creating learning opportunities for UMass Dartmouth students and job opportunities for graduates. Peerless peer health educators The UMass Dartmouth Peer Health Educators were awarded “Outstanding Peer Education Group“ for the New England area at a recent annual meeting of the BACCHUS Network, a national non-profit organization that actively promotes student leadership on healthy and safe lifestyle decisions. Kelly Ann Boehm ’10 nursing, was also named “Outstanding Peer Educator Alumnus-Area 10 (New England).” The Outstanding Peer Education Group award is granted to “a peer education group which shows commitment to impacting their campus community, accepts growth and leadership opportunities, works effectively as a team, collaborates well with campus groups and organizations, and demonstrates passion, creativity, and follow-through in activities.” The Outstanding Alumnus award is granted to an alumnus who has “contributed to their community through their work or philanthropy and has served as a positive role model to BACCHUS.“

The 2011 Civic Engagement Summit inspires community participation Alan Khazei, co-founder of City Year, was keynote speaker at UMass Dartmouth’s Civic Engagement Summit 2011 held on campus recently. The event, organized by the University’s Center for Civic Engagement, drew 200 young people and civic leaders. Among other accomplishments in his career, Khazei joined with other service leaders to organize the “Save AmeriCorps” coalition and launched the “Be the Change” non-profit.

New spin on energy plan: wind turbine

Students roll out the world’s largest snowball Smashing the record for the world’s most gigantic snowball, a team of UMass Dartmouth students took advantage of a snowy winter to roll an oversized, whoppingly large, crystal ball. The big and bulky snowball measured 7'4" high, 6'1" wide, and had a record-breaking circumference of 23'2". The frozen creation broke the Guinness World Record. The snowball making was chronicled on video and through photographs to authenticate the effort. The record-blasting team included Wes Fowlks, Michael Parisi, Brian Hassett, Greg Dorman, Jimmy Tice, Mark McCulley, Kevin Donovan, Wes Meserve, Ben DeLuca and Andy Wu.

Pushing to modernize campus energy resources, UMass Dartmouth will move ahead with plans to build a 600-kilowatt wind turbine about half way between the bell tower and Cedar Dell Pond. Annually, the turbine will produce the same amount of energy as burning approximately 39 tons of coal and eliminate the emission of 1,161 pounds of sulfur dioxide and 489 pounds of nitrous oxide. “Students, whose futures will be shaped by the actions we take today, are teaching us that learning, working and living green are not just the right Continued page 6

Tyler Buck is on track for his law degree Tyler Buck ’09 returned home to San Diego, California after graduation to look for work. He coached track, worked at a Subway, and then got a job at as a bankruptcy paralegal. That’s when he first thought about law school. He applied to and was accepted at UMass School of Law. When his financial aid arrived, Buck realized he could afford to go back to his alma mater, but as a law student with an added bonus. When Buck transferred to UMass Dartmouth after his freshman year at Point Loma (CA) Nazarene University, he had run one year of outdoor track. The school did not have indoor track, which meant after three years with the Corsairs, Buck still had a year of eligibility remaining in that sport. A former Little East Conference indoor champion at 600 meters as an undergraduate senior, Buck contacted head track coach Steve Gardiner about returning for one last season. After finishing the Fall semester at the law school, Buck returned to the track team as the first law school studentathlete. In his first competition in more than a year in a half, Buck ran a 1:58.89 in the 600 meters at Boston University, the sixth best time in Corsair history. His track career may be over but his law education is right on schedule. UMass

Trailblazers help celebrate Black and Women’s History Months Civil rights leader Andrew Young and author Sonia Sanchez were among the trailblazers who came to campus in February and March to celebrate Black History and Women’s History months. Black History Month events were coordinated by staff at the Frederick Douglass Unity House: the celebrations included exhibits, film showings, lectures, readings of African-American authors, music of the civil rights movement, and a Civil War reenactment involving the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. Women’s History Month events coordinated by the Women’s Resource Center included films, lectures, the 11th Annual Outstanding Women’s Award and the 4th Annual Women’s Resource Center/Women’s Studies Fundraiser.

University faculty continued to break ground with their research and creative activity this winter and spring: Graduate student David Falta (Physics), along with Professors Robert Fisher (Physics) and Gaurav Khanna (Physics), recently received notice that their research showing how exploding stars bend space and time will be published in the journal of Physical Review Letters. A summary of the article explains: “The explosion of a white dwarf star releases a tremendous amount of energy over the span of a few seconds, comparable to the entire energy that will be output by our sun over its entire lifetime....The researchers demonstrated for the first time that these exploding white dwarf stars can generate a ripple in space and time strong enough to be detected by future spaceborne instruments. If detected, these waves in space and time may yield insights into the mysterious very first seconds of the supernova — into the very heart of the explosion itself— shielded from us in ordinary visible light.”

Dr. Michael Goodman, chair of the Department of Public Policy, accepted an invitation to serve on the Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM) Board of Economic Advisors. AIM is a nonprofit, nonpartisan employer association of 6,000 businesses and institutions. Professor Cindy Pilskaln (Estuarine and Ocean Sciences) is the newest “Faces of UMass Dartmouth,” a video series that tells the stories of faculty, students, and alumni. Professors Steven White (Management and Marketing), Angappa Gunasekaran (Decision and Information Sciences), Timothy Shea (Decision and Information Sciences), and Godwin Ariguzo (Management and Marketing) have been studying the digital divide. They found that the United States is being outperformed in communication technology by 18 other countries. Professor White said he expects the digital divide to shrink, and the recent social networkdriven uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia illustrate the trend. “Wireless access is the growth area, and this allows poorer countries and their citizens to engage on a national and global level,” he said.

Dr. Tracie Ferreira (Biology) received a $201,318, multi-year grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for the Ferreira laboratory to map the location of a gene that could be a key component in craniofacial development in vertebrates, including humans. As intriguing as the scientific possibilities are, Ferreira said the grant means so much more to her laboratory. “Most (of my students) are children of immigrants, primarily from Portugal, and this grant allows them to get handson experience, learn new laboratory techniques, and ultimately embark on productive careers in science. It’s a winwin situation for everyone,” said Ferreira.

Professor Dan Braha (Decision and Information Systems) and his fellow researchers at the New England Complex Systems Institute have shown that stock market crashes can be predicted. The study was done in response to a challenge by world leaders at the G-20 meetings in Washington— in the midst of the 2008 financial crisis—to create an early warning system that would provide continuous monitoring of the stock market to anticipate financial meltdowns. Professor Chad McGuire (Public Policy), and Helen Perivier, an online environmental policy graduate student living in Lisbon, Portugal, recently collaborated on a research article examining the environmental impacts of commercial shipping. “What is interesting about this collaboration is the fact that it was entirely based in an online environment,” Professor McGuire said. Professor Robin Robinson (Sociology/ Anthropology) has received a grant from the new UMass Center for Clinical and Translational Research to pursue her work on “Psychological Foundations of Power and Relational Abuse Amongst Rural and Small Town Adolescents,” a pilot project to explain behaviors associated with “teen dating violence.”

Is scientific literacy at risk of Professors agree that creating a scientifically literate citizenry is key to the nation’s economic and social well-being.

The acceptance of evolution Dr. Guillermo Paz-y-Miño C., who has been studying attitudes toward evolution for several years, became particularly interested in the acceptance of evolution after the 2005 Kitzmiler v.s. Dover trial, a challenge brought in the United States court against a school system that required intelligent design be presented as an alternative to evolution. The judge ruled against the school board, saying that intelligent design was essentially creationism in disguise and violated the constitutional separation between church and state. But the debate goes on, and evolution remains under fire. “It became evident that the court case would not be an isolated event, neither a resolved one,” said Dr. Paz-y-Miño C. “Creationism was back, with a new façade, and today we see the sequels of it in the numerous court litigations being addressed in the country.” He noticed that little attention had been paid to attitudes toward evolution among college students and their professors, which spurred him to more deeply explore these areas of research. rational decisions and to support science education and development is key to the economic and social well-being of the nation, UMass Dartmouth professors agree. “We seem to have developed a great distrust in science among the public precisely at a time when there are so many issues that need to be analyzed in a rational, scientific way,” said Dr. Hirshfeld. “We need science to provide us information to deal with everything from the environment to terrorism.” Without the support of a knowledgeable citizenry, support for science education has eroded over time, UMass Dartmouth scientists said. “This is what is happening: We are in danger of becoming two cultures —the scientists and the non-scientists,” said Dr. Farrington, also Scientist Emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where he served as dean for 15 years and was responsible for education activities. Science-related fields enjoyed a heyday after the Russians launched the space satellite Sputnik and the United States immersed itself in the Space Race, ushering in new technological and scientific developments. But since then the support for science and related research has dwindled. The reasons behind the science knowledge drop are complex, and observers point to everything from politics and religion to poverty and poor training of teachers. But the result has been a deep degradation of both the understanding of science as well as respect for science. The United States, once a scientific and technological leader, now lags behind other countries in science research, science knowledge and technological innovations. “What we see now is the United States losing its edge. If we want the nation to be cutting edge, then that nation must value science and realize that science is intrinsically important and practically important for progress,” Dr. Paz-y-Miño C. said. If the causes of scientific illiteracy are complicated, so too are

the solutions, scientists throughout the nation agree, involving formal and informal education of legislators and society leaders, teachers and students from preschool through post-graduate and the general citizenry. “We are losing ground in matters of accepting evolution and valuing science, and it is critical that we change this, or we are heading intellectually into revisiting the Dark Ages,” Dr. Paz-y-Miño C. said. He and others worry that “science stoppers”— creationism and intelligent design— are creeping into science education replacing science with pseudo-science. Dr. Farrington, who can often be found giving public talks and leading discussions on ocean concerns related to PCB contamination, sustainability, ocean climate, said the country must address scientific illiteracy “K-through gray.” “We can’t just leave a whole generation behind,” Dr. Farrington said. Last summer, he was a key instructor for the UMass Dartmouth-sponsored Sustainability Summer Camp for Adults —How to Improve and Maintain Personal and Planetary Well-Being. Participants spent the day exploring topics of sustainability, climate change and the potential impacts locally for SouthCoast fisheries and the economy. Dr. Farrington has also been deeply involved in the downtown New Bedford Ocean Explorium, a center for ocean science public education supported by UMass Dartmouth with student and faculty engagement. A past chair of the Explorium’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Farrington is a current board member and is an active participant in educational events, as are several other UMass Dartmouth Professors and graduate students from SMAST and from other departments. “By bringing ocean science and technology to the fore, the Ocean Explorium provides an exciting venue for students and the general public to be connected to science and technology

Questions for Sheri McCoy ’80 Sheri McCoy ’80 is the Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee at Johnson & Johnson and the former Worldwide Chairman of the company’s Pharmaceuticals Group. She started her career at J & J in 1982 and has steadily advanced through the ranks to her present position as one of the top three executives at the company. In 2010, Fortune Magazine ranked Sheri at #12 in its list of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Business.” We asked the married mother of three if she would be willing to answer some questions and give us a view into her world. It may seem obvious but could you outline some of your major responsibilities at Johnson & Johnson? I have responsibility for oversight of our $15 billion Consumer segment and our $22 billion Pharmaceuticals segment. Additionally, I am accountable for

our Corporate Office of Science and Technology and our Corporate Affairs group, which is responsible for our philanthropy programs, our advertising and our corporate equity initiatives. You’re a long way from your hometown of Braintree and UMass Dartmouth

(then SMU). Did you have a career in pharmaceuticals/health industry in mind when you first started college? I did not have a specific career in mind. I knew I enjoyed science, math and problem solving. I decided to pursue a career in research, and started out in

consumer products at Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson is a very broadly based health care company, and over time, I moved from consumer products, to medical devices, to pharmaceuticals. This gave me the chance to pursue opportunities that were more focused on improving health. It must be gratifying to know that your work directly impacts many people who suffer from health ailments and diseases. With what frequency do you directly witness the benefits of a new drug or product that has saved an individual or removed incredible hardships? And is that the best benefit of your job?

Cash Many of the gifts received by the UMass Dartmouth Foundation are in the form of cash— usually by check. Increasingly, some alumni and friends have chosen to make their gifts to the Annual Fund using a major credit card. This allows the donor to take advantage of any benefits awarded by the credit card company such as frequent flyer miles, bonus points, etc. Both types of gifts are simple to make and are immediately available for use by the university. Securities Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds and mutual funds offer distinct advantages to the donor while benefiting the UMass Dartmouth Foundation. In the case of such gifts, the donor can earn a charitable income tax deduction and eliminate all or a large portion of the capital gains tax that the donor would otherwise be required to pay if the securities were sold. Reed, Jr. ’70, marketing, Marlborough, reports that after 35 years in the corporate financial service industry, he joined four of his banking/investment colleagues to form Northeast Investment Advisors, LLC, which is an independent financial advisory group located in Framingham. This move has provided him a measurable improvement in his quality of life. Joseph V. Benefides, Jr. ’78, finance, Freetown, a veteran global relocation industry expert, was named chief executive officer of HouseSavvy, a real estate and relocation organization providing advice to homebuyers and sellers. Margaret ’MarDee’ Xifaras, MBA ’78, Marion, was named the 2010 Standard-Times SouthCoast Women of the Year for her efforts coordinating the campaign to establish a state law school in Massachusetts. Xifaras led the 2009-2010 effort to absorb the Southern New England School of Law into UMass Dartmouth.

Elizabeth Isherwood-Moore, MBA ’80, Dartmouth, president of Moore & Isherwood Communications, Inc. was recognized with the 2010 Outstanding Service Award by the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes an individual whose leadership performance, personal example and good influence has done the most to advance the welfare of the New Bedford chamber and the community. Recognized for her extensive chamber leadership, as well as her community involvement, she received the UMass Dartmouth Alumni Personal Achievement Award in 2004. She is married to John Moore, HD ’96. Edward Lambert ’81, psychology, Fall River, was named commissioner of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation. Lambert, a former Mayor of Fall River, worked as director of The Urban Initiative at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He will oversee a staff of 1,100 and serve as chief steward of 450,000 acres of state forests, parks, historic sites and landscapes. Edward M Durkin ’82, accounting, Franklin, was named president and CEO of the Tactical Communications Group (TCG), a Tewksbury supplier of tactical data link software serving the military communications industry. Durkin previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of TCG,

Loretta “Lee” D. Blake ’83, sociology, New Bedford, was named the 2010 New Bedford Woman of the Year. Blake works as the director of the SouthCoast Education Compact, a partnership between UMass Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, and local business and school leaders focused on improving educational attainment across the region. Blake also serves as president of the New Bedford Historical Society. In both roles, Blake works, directly and indirectly, to better educate people —especially young people —about all aspects of New Bedford’s history.

In Memoriam Lydia Poole Barker, “Poole,” ’10 of Westport, died February 28, 2011, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Providence, the daughter of Warren Kingsley Barker and the late Constance Leslie, she was a graduate of Friends Academy and Westport High School, Class of 2006. A consummate artist, she attended the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, and graduated with a BFA from the University, summa cum laude, Class of 2010. Poole was a presence in life and will remain a presence in the way she touched the people around her and through her art. From her early doodlings in her mother’s studio in Providence to her full-fledged sculptures as an accomplished artist, her work evoked a passion and joy for the piece, for the recipient, and for the natural world that often inspired it. Her hand-made paper and the sculpture that emerged from its folds celebrated in its beauty the natural beauty in the world that surrounds us and that world is better for it. As well as her father, she is survived by her brother, Wylie Barker; her sister, Lily Barker; grandmother, Joan Leslie of Brunswick, Maine; and her many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was the grand-daughter of the late William H. and Harriet A. Barker and John F. Leslie.

She has written food features, recipes, cooking instruction documents and commentary for a variety of publications and blogs such as Food Network, Dessert Professional Magazine, The Orlando Sentinel and Edible Orlando Magazine. Nascimento ’94, political science, Plainville, was elected president of the Board of Directors of the New England Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. Nascimento began his term as president during the 2010 NEACCE Annual Conference. Nascimento has been the president of the New Bedford chamber since 2006. He served as president of the Attleboro Area Chamber of Commerce for two years and vice president of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce in Brockton for seven years. Nicole St. Pierre, MFA ’98 artisanry, New Bedford. An artist at Hatch Street Studios, St. Pierre uses her space to create handdyed scarves and felted hats using a combination of Japanese shibori and indigo dyeing techniques. Shibori is an ancient Japanese way of folding or stitching fabric before dyeing it to create unique patterns and textures. St. Pierre first worked from her home and another New Bedford studio before moving to Hatch Street four years ago. Joseph P. Lopes ’99, political science, New Bedford, was recognized by the New England Business Bulletin as one of the top young professionals living or working in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Motta ’00, JD, Ottawa, ON, received her Doctor of Civil Law degree from the faculty of law at McGill University in Montreal in June 2010. Motta also completed with honors a Master’s in Law in Bioethics and Law from McGill University. Motta works as a senior policy analyst with the government agency Health Canada in Ottawa, where she resides with her son. Justin Paul Nadeau ’00, JD, Portsmouth, NH, was named one of New Hampshire’s 2011 Under 40 award recipients. Nadeau is an attorney and managing partner of the Law Offices of Justin P. Nadeau, PA. When not practicing law, Nadeau puts his creative energy to use as an inventor. He recently invented an item to repel sharks from swimmers. Since 2005 Nadeau has been an adjunct professor at the University of New Hampshire, teaching business law.

Redpath is a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the National Science Teachers Association, and the National Education Association. Larry Zorio ’04, business information systems, Melrose. Zorio and a colleague, have started up a website called www.BurnedBySocialMedia.com. This site is a platform for people who have run into trouble after “unpleasant” posts, pictures or videos of them appear on a social media site and are translated into a loss of a job, etc. The site has generated interest from a British university that wants to feature it in a documentary in the Royal Film Awards.

Elisabeth Spinnato ’06, English/ writing, Hoboken, NJ, works as the web coordinator of content and development on The Rachel Ray Show. Andrew Sabourin ’07, political science, Woburn, graduated from Massachusetts School of Law in June 2010 and was sworn in as a Massachusetts Attorney in November 2010. He then opened the Law Office of Andrew F. Sabourin located in Winchester, which focuses on personal injury, criminal defense, estate planning, bankruptcy and family law issues. Andrew would love to hear from his classmates. Michael Close ’08, visual design/ illustration, Fall River, works in assemblage arts in Fall River, and as a house painter in warm weather. He paints models, landscapes, scenes from old National Geographic magazines, and the work of master painters. His artwork ranges from graphic arts, to painting and drawing. Brian Ashmankas ’09, political science, Millbury, was elected selectman in his hometown of Millbury in April 2010. Since being elected, he has focused on increasing regionalization.
