ULM Soccer Complex First Year: 2006 First Match: Aug. 27, 2006 (McNeese State 2, ULM 0) Overall Record: 18-44-1 Surface: Grass Seating Capacity: 500 Largest Crowd: 278, Aug. 22, 2009 vs. Belhaven College The Warhawk soccer team moved into the ULM Soccer Complex in conjunction with the program’s move to the Sun Belt Conference in 2006. Now in its eighth season, the facility has developed into one of the finest in the state. Located next to the scenic Pecan Grove on campus, the ULM Soccer Complex features a 120-by-80 meter manicured surface of Bermuda and Rye. Most recently, permanent structures were added to both home and visitor benches, and a permanent press area was added. In addition, the Complex received a new LED-lit scoreboard from Daktronics prior to the 2011 season. Next to the field is the ULM Soccer Fieldhouse, which houses the Warhawks’ locker room, office space for the coaches, a meeting room and a lounging area.

Fehr was named All-Louisiana First-Team as a freshman and led the team in goals (5), assists (5), points (15), game-winning goals (2), shots (54) and shots on goal (26). Mazza came to ULM after leading Arkansas-Pine Bluff to the NCAA Tournament twice in his last three years at the helm. He posted an overall record of 48-27-12 at UAPB and was a two-time SWAC Coach of the Year winner. Additionally, he guided nine onto both the SWAC All-Conference FirstTeam and Second-Team. He led the Lady Lions to a 16-5-1 record in his last season

and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas-Pine Bluff rolled through its Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule with a perfect 9-0 record. UAPB outscored its SWAC opponents 26-2 during the regular season and 8-0 in three conference tournament victories. “You don’t have to look too hard to see the success that Roberto had at Arkansas-Pine Bluff,” said former ULM Director of Athletics Bobby Staub. “Reaching the NCAA Tournament is not an easy task and to reach the tournament in two of the last three years is a true testament to his coaching abilities. Roberto not only recruited studentathletes that helped them win championships on the field, but he also brought in young women that were extremely successful in the classroom. We are excited about the future of ULM soccer under his leadership.” “This is a fantastic opportunity that ULM has given to me,” Mazza said. “I’m ready to get to work and make a big difference with this program. A lot of the success we had at Arkansas-Pine Bluff can be contributed to the hard work of our players and making them believe it was possible. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of believing, putting in the work to accomplish your goals, and getting the job done.” The Lady Lions drew No. 5 Oklahoma State in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament and had the Cowgirls on their heels at the break. UAPB scored in the 31st minute of the opening half to go into halftime trailing by just one, 2-1, before Oklahoma State pulled away in the second half. UAPB swept the SWAC postseason awards this past season as Silvia Fuentes was named Offensive Player of the Year and Erika Forbes was named Defensive Player of the Year -- both players earned their respective awards for the second straight season -- while Meaghan Storie claimed Freshman of the Year honors. All told, seven UAPB players were named either first or second team All-SWAC. The results speak for themselves during Mazza’s tenure at UAPB - an overall record of 48-27-12; team ranked No. 62 in the country according to Top Drawer Soccer; two-time SWAC Coach of the year; four conference tournament appearances (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011); three conference Player of the Year selections; two Freshman of the Year selections; nine first team all-conference selections; nine cecond team all-conference selections; 27 conference Player of the Week honors; three conference Offensive Player of the Year selections; one NCAA national statistical champion for Goals Per Game; one NCAA national statistical champion for Points Per Game; two NCAA national

SUN BELT CONFERENCE Formed in 1976 the Sun Belt Conference quickly rose to the greatest heights of collegiate athletics and the league continues to find itself at the pinnacle of competition as a member of the 10-league alliance of the Bowl Championship Series and soon-to-be College Football Playoff. Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in 2012 that results in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Fans of the Sun Belt Conference can look forward to seeing more Sun Belt teams playing on national television on ESPN and ESPN2 and additionally the ESPN deal will result in more coverage on ESPNU. ESPN will continue to televise the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 32nd straight season in 2013, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country. The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history. Success has been easy to find in recent years as well. Over the last five years the Sun Belt Conference ranks sixth out of the 11 FBS conferences in postseason bowl game winning percentage. In fact, the Sun Belt Conference ranks ahead of noted “BCS AQ” leagues – the ACC, Pac-12 and the Big Ten.

The Sun Belt Conference maintains tie-ins with the GoDaddy Bowl and the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. A team from the Sun Belt Conference has played in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl since its inception in 2001. The SBC has won four consecutive R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl games and six out of the last seven. The GoDaddy bowl, meanwhile, has a four-year agreement in place with the Sun Belt Conference and Mid-American Conference to provide teams for the game. Sun Belt student-athletes have a history of performing well in the class room as well. With sights set on raised benchmarks, 96.2% of teams that will make up the 2013-14 Sun Belt Conference are performing above the future Academic Progress Rate (APR) standard of 930 as the NCAA released its latest figures in June. Beginning with 2012-13 NCAA Championships, teams must earn a minimum 900 four-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years to be eligible to participate. For 2014-15 championships, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in championships. In 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships. 153 of 159 Sun Belt teams are currently performing above the 930 benchmark. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include Lyndon B. Johnson, former President of the United States (Texas State), former All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (Louisiana-Monroe), CEO of Duck Commander and Buck Commander Willie Robertson (LouisianaMonroe) and DeMarcus Ware, an All-Pro NFL linebacker (Troy). The Sun Belt Conference will contest the 2013 football season with eight members – Arkansas State, Georgia State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama, Texas State, Troy and Western Kentucky University. UALR and UT Arlington compete as non-football members. Come the 2014 season, the Sun Belt will have four new members in the league as Appalachian State and Georgia Southern were added as all-sports members and Idaho and New Mexico State have been added as football playing members.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS ULM earns elite certification for athletic counselors ULM became only one of 20 institutions in the country to earn certification for athletic counselors from the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics or N4A.

“Next to watching these student-athletes walk across the stage at commencement, this is about as good as it gets,” said Dr. Kathy Parker, coordinator of Athletic Academic Counseling in the Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center.

N4A offers certification to college and university academic support programs for student athletes through an extensive and rigorous application process.

“I am lucky to have great student-athletes, coaches, and a director who are supportive of our efforts; and peers, colleagues and superiors who appreciate good work.”

The purpose of program certification is to ensure that an academic support unit can provide a basic set of services to student-athletes.

“Our job as athletic academic counselors is not to make life easy for student-athletes, but to act in a manner consistent with what is in their long-term best interests,” continued Parker.

“The level of professionalism demonstrated by the academic counselors and the entire staff in pursuing this accreditation is remarkable,” commented Brett Bennett, ULM’s Faculty Athletic Representative and assistant professor/head of ULM’s department of Radiologic Technology.

“This certification bestowed by those who are experts in the field tells me that we are doing the right things for the right reasons.” ULM joins Louisiana State University as the only other Louisiana institution to be certified.

Academic support programs for student-athletes are designed to assist them with their goal of graduation. Recognizing which universities and colleges have a demonstrated commitment to the academic support of student-athletes is critical information for athletes to consider when selecting a school.

The ULM Strength and Conditioning Department is built around enhancing our athlete’s ability to perform both physically and mentally, on and off the field of play. Physically our objective is to prepare our athletes to compete at a championship level and to prevent injury on and off the field. This is attained by training at a maximal level and incorporating both sport specific and position specific exercises in the weight room and on the field. Our various “prehab” techniques and close partnership with the Athletic Training Department allows us to keep our athletes safe and prevent injury before it occurs. Mentally our objective is to prepare our athletes for the rigors and demands of competition on the field and in life. We look to enhance our athletes’ ability to maintain a high level of focus, maturity, discipline, responsibility, accountability, loyalty, and competitiveness. The ULM Strength and Conditioning Program adheres to and supports all aspects of the NCAA and the Sun Belt Conference. -Joe Girardi, MS, SCCC Director of Football Strength and Conditioning

ATHLETIC TRAINING

WE ARE THE WARHAWKS The Rise of the Warhawks Moving into the Sun Belt Conference in the 2006-07 season, ULM’s athletic department completed a transformation of sorts. Unique to the program, ULM’s Warhawk moniker is the only one at the highest level of NCAA competition and one of only two Warhawks at any collegiate level in the entire nation. ULM’s Warhawks provide fans with multiple points of pride to rally behind. The mascot holds local historical connection to the P-40 ‘Warhawk’ airplane flown by northeast Louisiana’s General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers of WWII. The Warhawk is also symbolic of the red-shouldered hawk, a local predatory bird commonly found nesting along Bayou DeSiard and soaring above ULM’s athletic facilities year round. On August 30, 2006, ULM mascot ‘ACE THE WARHAWK’ landed. Wearing bomber jacket, flight helmet and goggles, Ace has provided a perfect representation of the dual meaning of ULM’s mascot. Less than two months later, Warhawk I, a live red-shouldered hawk permanently housed at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo in Monroe, La., was added to the ULM family of mascots. Warhawk II now resides at the zoo. Since their arrival, ACE and Warhawk II have become vital parts of the ULM community. Including appearances at home athletic events and other activities around campus, the duo rally fans to help the Warhawks achieve victory. The pair also make appearances across the Monroe and West Monroe community, providing educational opportunities for ULM’s youngest fans. The ULM Jr. Warhawk Club is a special membership group for Warhawk fans age 12 and younger. One-year memberships are available and members receive season tickets to all home Warhawk athletic events, a Jr. Warhawk Club t-shirt, membership card and invitations to exclusive Jr. Warhawks Club events.

ULM TRADITION The rafters at Fant-Ewing Coliseum are full and the trophy cases across campus are overflowing with the fruits of ULM’s athletic successes. Beginning with a men’s cross country and track and field conference championship in 1958-59, the Warhawks have a storied run at the top of the standings in each sport over the athletic program’s history. From national championships to basketball Final Fours and collegiate baseball World Series appearances, fans at ULM have become accustomed to watching their teams compete - and win - at the highest level. The Warhawks have advanced to the national semifinals of major tournaments in six different sports and ULM has claimed more than 90 conference championships. The ULM men’s squads have claimed all-sports titles 14 times, including four in the Gulf States Conference (1963, ‘64, ‘65, ‘69), the Atlantic Sun (1980, ‘81, ‘82), and the Southland Conference (1984, ‘88, ‘90, ‘91, ‘92, ‘93, ‘94). The ULM women have grabbed all-sports titles six times in the Southland Conference (1984, ‘85, ‘87, ‘88, ‘90, ‘94). During the 1984 SLC season, ULM became the first program in conference history to win all sports titles on both the men’s and women’s side. The Warhawks would accomplish the feat three more times. After conquering the Southland Conference, ULM made the move to the Sun Belt Conference and has continued its winning ways. Before the Warhawks had even become full members of their new league, the team had won a football conference championship in 2005. One year later, ULM won a divisional title in men’s basketball and followed that up one season later with a 2008 regular season championship in baseball.

ATHLETIC FOUNDATION The primary support group for the University of Louisiana at Monroe Athletics is the ULM Athletic Foundation. The Athletic Foundation, founded in 1956, is the main fund-raising organization for the athletics department. What is the Athletic Foundation? The ULM Athletic Foundation is the pillar of support for Warhawk Athletics. It is composed of individuals and businesses with a common mission: to raise financial support and awareness for Warhawk Athletics, positively promote all athletic events, grow our fan and donor base, and enhance the lives of more than 300 student-athletes. Five Ways you can Help ULM Athletics 1. Donate to the Athletic Foundation and “Give 110 percent” of your previous year’s giving. Your gift to the Athletic Foundation allows us to provide much needed financial assistance to the athletics department. Increased funding is vital to improving and maintaining competitiveness in all 16 varsity sports. 2. Recruit friends and colleagues to buy season tickets and donate to the Athletic Foundation. Increased financial support comes from many different revenue sources. Whether participating in

a special event, attending home games or making a donation, your financial support is vital to providing a championship experience to every studentathlete! 3. Make a gift toward scholarship endowments or facility upgrades If you are interested in making a once-in-a-lifetime gift to the Athletic Foundation, we will work with you to make sure that your wishes for such an important gift are satisfied. When you make such a gift, we will continue to partner with you in shepherding the contribution as you wish. 4. Let us know if your company has a matching gift program Over 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs which allow you to double or triple your Athletic foundation contributions. Please check with your Human Resources Department to determine if your company matches gifts for athletic scholarships. Or visit ulm.edu/giftmatch. 5. Include ULM Athletics when preparing or revising your will or estate plan. Many donors choose to make gifts such as trusts and annuities when revising their estates and wills. These instruments allow the donor to see the benefit of planned giving while they are still able to stay involved in the athletics program. Another

course of action is an outright gift as part of a will or estate plan. Both planned giving and bequests are a great plan to link your legacy to Warhawk Athletics. Tax Information The ULM Athletic Foundation is a qualified taxexempt corporation under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Service. Please consult your tax advisor to see how laws apply to your particular gift. The ULM Athletic Foundation tax-ID number is 237399232. To make a gift or find additional information, please call the ULM Athletic Foundation at (318) 342-5428 or visit us online at ulmwarhawks.com.
