COACHING STAFF The Warhawks led the Sun Belt for the second straight year against the run (159.1) and ranked second overall (378.3) -- taking out a pair of games against BCS Bowl participants (Auburn & Arkansas) the Warhawks allowed just 353.6 yards per game.
ADAM WAUGH Assistant Coach Safeties Fourth Season at ULM Adam Waugh, who played for head coach Todd Berry at Illinois State, begins his fourth season coaching the ULM safeties following one season of coaching the defensive backs at Cal Poly. His stint with the Mustangs followed a six-year coaching stop at Army from 2003-08 - Berry was Army’s head coach in Waugh’s first year at the Academy. Isaiah Newsome made it three in a row for Coach Waugh as the safety earned second team All-Sun Belt honors after leading the team with four interceptions. Newsome’s four interceptions ranked tied for fifth in the Sun Belt and he finished tied for 39th in the final NCAA rankings. In 2012, the ULM secondary helped keep seven of its 13 opponents below the 300 passing yard mark. On two occasions the secondary aided stellar performances as Auburn was limited to 163 yards through the air and Tulane amassed just 160 passing yards. Playing under Waugh in 2011, Darius Prelow again earned All-Sun Belt honors as he was named to the first team. Prelow finished the season tied for 23rd in the NCAA with four interceptions and was fifth among Sun Belt defensive backs with 77 tackles on the year. The ULM defense finished eighth in the NCAA in rush defense after allowing only 100.0 yards per game and 21st in total defense after allowing only 326.2 yards a contest. The Warhawks set a new Sun Belt record after allowing just 100.0 yards per game on the ground. The Warhawks, who led the league in rush defense for the third consecutive season, finished first in total defense with 326.2 ypg. In 2010, Waugh made an immediate impact on the Warhawk secondary as junior safety Darius Prelow garnered All-Sun Belt honors after recording 74 tackles and a pair of interceptions. Waugh was also charged with the task of turning converted running back Isaiah Newsome into a starting safety by week four of the season -- Newsome made the switch during fall camp. The redshirt freshman finished with five pass break ups and nearly forty tackles in seven starts.
In his lone season at Cal Poly, Waugh mentored sophomore cornerback Asa Jackson into a first team all-conference selection, senior safety David Fullerton into a second team all-conference selection and senior cornerback Xavier Gardner to honorable mention honors in the Great West Conference. During his six-year stint at Army, Waugh focused primarily on the safeties. He helped develop Caleb Campbell, who finished his career in 2007 ranked among Army’s all-time top 10 tacklers. Campbell became the first Army player selected in the NFL Draft since 1997 when he was selected in the seventh round by the Detroit Lions. Waugh played a large role in Army’s consistently improving defensive efforts. The Black Knights ranked 37th in total defense in 2005 and ranked seventh nationally in pass defense in 2006 and 16th in 2007. A 2001 graduate of Illinois State, Waugh spent the 2002 season as a graduate assistant defensive coach under head coach Walt Harris at Pittsburgh. That season, the Panthers defeated Oregon State in the Insight.com Bowl and finished the year ranked in the top 25. As an undergraduate, the Libertyville, Ill., native started every game of his career while carving out an impressive 4.0 grade point average as a political science major. He finished his career with 320 tackles to rank eighth on the Redbirds’ all-time tackles chart. Waugh finished second on the team in tackles his junior and senior years, registering 101 and 83 stops, respectively. Waugh was chosen a Bone Scholar, the highest academic honor at Illinois State, and was one of 16 players selected to the 2001 class of National College Scholar-Athletes (a postgraduate scholarship program conducted by The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame). He was also a two-time first team Verizon Academic All-America selection. Waugh is married to the former Kristina Duzan and the couple has two daughters, Avery Ann and Emma Irene.
