EDITORIAL

Wim van der Leegte (1947-2023)

At the time of writing, the news has emerged that Wim van der Leegte has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 76. From his residence in Duizel, a shockwave of astonishment, sadness, and sympathy ripples through the region, reaching the far corners of the country. Wim was an icon of the industry in Southeast Brabant and the Netherlands. Wim van der Leegte can rightfully be called the embodiment of everything Brainport stands for. From innovation to Brabantian friendliness, from entrepreneurship to pride, from internationalism to family. Under Wim’s leadership, VDL - representing Van der Leegte - in Eindhoven grew into an international conglomerate of more than a hundred companies, 16,000 employees, and a billion-dollar turnover. VDL stands for manufacturing with innovative power. He passed the baton to his children in 2016, including Willem who became CEO, but he always kept a watchful eye.

One could even argue that without Wim, Eindless Magazine would not exist. Because without Wim, there would be no Brainport, no rapid growth, no internationals, no readership, no Eindless. He was not only a rock on which other entrepreneurs could build but also the cement between the stones. In that sense, we too are part of his legacy. And we are proud of that!

An example for all of us. Thanks to entrepreneurs like Wim van der Leegte, the region overcame many crises in recent decades. With farmer’s shrewdness, a sense of numbers, but also with both feet firmly on the Brabantian soil. That’s why we dedicate this editorial to Wim, whom we had the privilege to meet regularly, and it was always inviting and in a warm atmosphere.

Tanja Mlaker is director of the Eindhoven Culture Foundation, which has largely taken over the cultural task of the municipality of Eindhoven. As such, the ‘Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven’ is responsible for the distribution of subsidies to cultural institutions. The Slovenian native sees herself as a bridge builder and connector between politics and the cultural sector.

Dear Readers, There is a good chance that you looked in amazement at a light artwork during Glow last month, listened to music with pleasure - with or without others - or had an enthusiastic conversation with your friends or colleagues about a film or performance that you loved, because culture is something we do together and would like to share. Culture brings movement into our lives and sets us in motion. That is why culture is crucial for the vitality of a city. ‘Cultuur Eindhoven’ finances artists’ activities, designers and cultural organizations in Eindhoven and stimulates connections and collaborations within the region and (inter) nationally. This year we also worked on ‘Culture Scan’, a report on the current state of culture, and ‘Culture Letter 2025-2028’. Both documents were drawn up in conversation with cultural creators and organizations and were published in September. ‘Culture Letter 2025-2028’ is our advice to the Eindhoven Municipality for cultural policy, but we also looked a little wider and a little further

6

on in time. During the debate in the Municipal Council, it was clear that this is also perceived: Culture Letter is a vision document for the next ten years. The Municipality can provide direction with a culture budget and help make culture possible in the city. But more is needed to truly be an attractive and vital cultural city and region. Together we create culture! Artists with great ideas and plans, Brainport residents who allow themselves to be transported and participate, real estate owners who offer a place for culture, business, and social organizations. Everyone is a link in Brainport’s cultural and creative system. What are you going to do in the coming year or years and what is your wish for culture in the Brainport region?

Eindhoven is Brainport’s central city, it’s growing and will continue to grow in the coming years. This applies to the entire region. Many new residents arrive, with their own cultural tastes and interests, with new creative ideas and energy to realise them, with a desire to express themselves and belong. In ten years’ time, Brainport will have many more different voices and languages, but there are also many things that are universal and connect people. Culture is one of them. That is why it is important to strengthen culture in Brainport in the coming years, to continue investing in cultural places and creators and together to ensure that all residents of the region can enjoy culture. Culture as oxygen for the mind, available to everyone.

IN THE NEWS

Atmospheric city center ‘Wrap up the Year’ will start in December in the city center of Eindhoven. There will be a walking route past Christmas artworks by Eindhoven designers that will also take you past various light installations and past the Domes, an ice rink and a Christmas tree distribution point. There will be a light art project on the 18 Septemberplein consisting of eighteen ‘candle lights’ of more than five meters high. In addition, the center will of course once again be attractive illuminated, but there are also ‘Festipoorten’ (Porte Celesti) and Christmas trees on Wilheminaplein and Clausplein. And all that with atmospheric music in the background.

More international students Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is stringing together one record after another. This academic year, 3,093 new students registered. 1,571 of these come from abroad, which is more than from the Netherlands. The top 5 countries of origin are: Romania, China, Poland, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Most interest is in mechanical engineering and computer Science & engineering. The number of new students is about 12% higher than the last academic year. According to Chairman, Robert-Jan Smits, the increase is “a recognition of the quality and reputation” of the 67-year-old university. TU/e currently has the most students ever: 13,500.

Free New Year’s Party Another month and then we will be celebrating New Year. There will be plenty to do in the city to celebrate the arrival of 2024. Many parties are private, but the free event “New Year’s EHVE” takes place on the 18 Septemberplein at the foot of the Light Tower. Well-known local heroes such as Fresku, Joël Borelli and DJ La Fuente will perform, the latter even with a NYE Special. At midnight there is a big firework show. Officially, lighting fireworks in the city by private individuals is prohibited. The City Council hopes that a new tradition will be born with the event.

TOUGH PROGRAMME FOR PSV The final weeks of 2023 will be exciting for PSV. The club is at the top of the Eredivisie without dropping any points (!), 7 points ahead of nearest rival Feyenoord. PSV is in the race to become champions again, for the first time in six years! PSV’s next home match, against Heerenveen, is on 7th December. Before that, the club will play away against FC Twente (25th November), Feyenoord (3rd December), and on 12th December against AZ in Alkmaar. That is against three clubs in the top four in the Netherlands now. Afterwards the players can have champagne, as ‘autumn-champions’, we hope. Fingers crossed!

Brainport discovers the new ‘one society’ STIJN STEENBAKKERS

to improve life here. This new impetus should benefit the social jump in scale because of the large increase in the number of inhabitants, as a consequence of the rapid economic growth that places an enormous burden on society. Eindhoven and the region must also move forward in the social field, says Eindhoven Councilor Stijn Steenbakkers, it is the only way to keep up with developments.

NEW SOCIETY

The Brainport region has once again asked for a financial contribution from the Cabinet

TEXT: HANS MATHEEUWSEN | PHOTO: EINDHOVEN MUNICIPALITY

T

he Brainport region consists of the 21 municipalities in Southeast Brabant. After intensive lobbying by successive administrators, the Rutte III Cabinet designated Southeast Brabant as a ‘main port’ about five years ago. That is a term used by administrators and civil servants for major economic activity, at a junction of transport routes. Initially, Amsterdam (Schiphol) and Rotterdam (port) were the Dutch ‘main ports’. The Eindhoven region (technology and knowledge) was added. In terms of economic potential and growth, Eindhoven is now the second ‘main port’ in the country, after Amsterdam. The economy here is growing four times as fast as the national average. Within the ‘technology region’ Brainport Eindhoven, administrators, thinkers and doers work together. Due to the success and growth, for example due to the arrival of knowledge workers from all over the world, life in the region is under pressure. Roads are congested, living space is scarce, houses are expensive, schools are full, doctors have waiting lists, as do sports clubs. More and more residents are confronted with this. Government, business, and knowledge institutions are looking for ways to grow. Including by investing in affordable housing, such as ASML has done through the housing fund. The local government has appealed to the National Government for support.

disappear underground. The government is releasing another €48m for this. The agreement is that the region itself, in this case government and business, will invest €775M. That is ‘the hard side’. Projects on the soft side that have been proposed include a vitality project in the region’s countryside and outdoor areas, called: Eindhoven Backyard, regional school De Berkenschutse in Heeze, the Kempen Museum in Eersel, nature border park De Groote Heide, the cooperation of libraries to combat low literacy, re-use of the Wielewaal estate in Eindhoven, the Stationskwartier in Helmond and the GLOW Light Festival for the region, just to name a few.

‘It’s a puzzle advanced players; look at each project to see what is possible and what is not’

SOFT SIDE After the Government indicated that it wanted to invest additionally in certain regions in the Netherlands to stimulate broad prosperity, the municipalities in Southeast Brabant applied to Den Haag for €40M. In this Regional Deal 2.0 ‘At Home in Brainport’, thirty social projects have been designated on ‘the soft side’ that should make life in the region more pleasant and attractive for all residents. This concerns social and cultural facilities, but also, for example, nature projects that were, in part, not eligible for a previous contribution. Two years ago, the Government released €1B within the so-called Regional Deal for improving infrastructure and mobility. Money that is put into, among other things, the development of KnoopXL in the centre of Eindhoven. 6,500 homes are to be built here in the coming years. The bus station will

Also included are an intercultural audience activation program in which internationals, locals, and cultural organizations collaborate (Place of Change), and the international labor market project Talent100, both registered as promising projects. Initiatives for the further development of various museums are also mentioned: Museum Helmond, Kempenmuseum Eersel, Steendrukmuseum Valkenswaard, and Weverijmuseum in Geldrop.” The Cabinet will decide in February whether the region will receive the money. The decision at project level will be made sometime between February and December 2024.

ADD A LEG Councilor Stijn Steenbakkers (Brainport councilor, economy, education and KnoopXL) cannot emphasize the importance of the investment enough. Continued investment in the region is

needed to keep up with growth, he argues. And he is certainly not just talking about building thousands of homes, widening and constructing roads and bus lanes. Precisely because of the construction of homes in the municipalities and the densification of cities, full attention must be paid to the quality of life and the presence of high-quality facilities, especially in the cultural field. “Investing in housing and mobility is all well and good, but we also have to step up our game here,” said the participant in the administrative consultation with the Cabinet about the future of Brainport. It must also remain fun, he argues, and above all we must remain connected to each other. That is the strength of this region. Social cohesion, as it is called, is important. Furthermore, everyone should be able to participate, says the Councilor. This means that facilities must remain or become open, affordable, and accessible. “We can push hard on the economy and build a lot of homes, but we cannot run at top economic levels without the soft side. It is important that all municipalities continue to work together, because we have a long way to go. The story goes much further. After the Regional Deal 2.0, we will focus on education.”

PUZZLES FOR ADVANCED STUDENTS The Brainport Councilor shows enormous enthusiasm, and energy radiates. But more and more parties involved, including builders and residents, are wondering whether all the great plans will go ahead at all under the influence of various negative developments, including inflation, and if so: when? Because we seem to be in a hurry to keep up with population growth. Stijn Steenbakers remains optimistic about the feasibility of all plans. “Eindhoven continues to build,” he declares strongly, “It is the only way”. Everyone will have to make concessions and settle for lower returns, and the Municipality will certainly have to demand less. The ambitions are only growing. The business community is now taking its role and responsibility. We are inventing a kind of new society: doing things together, not only economically but also in all other areas. That is the only way to get out of the dip and gain speed. We must work as hard as possible. At the moment, it’s puzzling for advanced players. In other words, look at each project to see what is possible and what is not.” n

Ph.D. student TU/e & Hermes public bus driver

TEKST & FOTO: KIKA MARQUARDT

Seven years ago, Sanne van Kempen made the deliberate choice to embark on a transformative journey to Eindhoven for educational pursuits. Captivated by the allure of Brabant culture, Sanne foresaw the city as a very ‘gezellige’ city. Over the years, Eindhoven has become more than an academic hub for Sanne, who now dedicates weekdays to advancing knowledge as a Ph.D. student in mathematics at Eindhoven University of Technology. However, weekends unfold a different facet of Sanne’s life, steering buses for Hermes through the city’s streets - a juxtaposition that provides a comprehensive and nuanced perspective on the essence of Eindhoven. Sanne brings some new perspectives of the life and culture of the city below.

Movie

My favorite movie nights are definitely the Buitenfilms at Natlab over the summer Just bring your own lawn chair, sit back and relax!

City

Driving throughout the city and its surrounding areas as a bus driver brings me immense satisfaction. Despite my familiarity with the city, discovering new ‘hidden’ gems is a constant delight. Some noteworthy examples include the Van Gogh Cycle Path, Genderpark, Stiphoutse Bossen, and Oirschotse Heide.

Music

EINDHOVEN THROUGH THE EYES OF

Sanne van Kempen

As a violinist, I enjoy the opportunities to play in different orchestras and ensembles in and around Eindhoven. I have played with Ensuite, the symphony orchestra of the student music association ESMG Quadrivium and with the Philips Symphony Orchestra. It is great to be able to make music together and perform in venues like the Muziekgebouw, Parktheater, Catharina Church or De Schalm.

Sport s

In the years that my fitness allows for it, I like to participate in the ASML half marathon. The crowds cheering you on from beginning to end make it feel like you can fly all the way to the finish. For training, I enjoys my runs in the Philips de Jongh Park or around the Karpedonkse Plas.

Fun Fact In the Muziekgebouw, just before entering the stage through the artist entrance, there is a sign that says, ‘Just hold on for a bit; you can almost go to the bar.’ I believe this is truly characteristic of the spirit and vibe of Eindhoven. It could be interpreted as a casual and light-hearted way to encourage people to achieve their goals with the promise of a pleasant experience waiting for them at the end. The effort pays off, after all.

Sanne in december

For December, I very much look forward to performing in a Christmas themed concert of ESMG Quadrivium featuring selections from the Messiah and Brandenburg Concerto No 3. The concert is on the 9th of December at 8pm in the Catharina Church in Eindhoven so I hope to see you there! In her capacity as a bus driver, Sanne encounters people from various parts of the city, providing her with a more expansive perspective compared to interactions solely within University circles. The satisfaction derived from assisting individuals in reaching their destinations is a significant aspect of her role. Furthermore, Sanne holds the view that public transport plays a crucial role in mitigating car traffic and fostering the integration of more green spaces within the city.

‘Gezellig’ is a Dutch term that encapsulates a sense of warmth, coziness, and conviviality. It implies a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, often associated with social gatherings and a feeling of togetherness. When Sanne envisioned Eindhoven as a ‘gezellige’ city, she foresaw it as a place with a charming and inviting ambiance, where people could come together and enjoy a sense of community.

We are living in times of war, political division, and radicalization. These events are tearing society apart instead of bringing people closer together. This is the reason why I believe that we need to focus on increasing inclusivity in organisations more than ever. Having diversity within your organization is not enough. It’s all about inclusivity. Do you even know what the key difference is? I urge you to approach this with an open mind and to take action. Some companies struggle with inclusivity due to the fear of change. And yes, that fear is widespread, even among the gray Caucasian men with their old boys’ network. It’s understandable; it can be intimidating to feel that, as part of the majority, you need to embrace a minority perspective. But the concept is really not scary. The goal of inclusivity is not to replace one group with another but to create an environment where everyone feels free and safe to participate in the conversation. Note that inclusivity is not just about accepting different cultures and beliefs within an organization but more importantly about finding common ground on which everyone can build. Being open-minded and realizing that we are all responsible for connecting in and with the organization, even if connecting is not your natural talent. Everyone with a heartbeat can contribute to this. It’s truly nonsense and a weak excuse if people don’t see themselves as connectors. It’s not that difficult to genuinely show interest in a colleague from another team.

COLUMN JIN

Inclusivity in organisations: let’s try harder to connect And the benefits of inclusivity are obvious: an inclusive environment promotes diversity, leading directly to a broader range of perspectives and ideas. This creates a fertile ground for innovation and creativity. Moreover, it improves the work culture, resulting in higher satisfaction, employee engagement, and, consequently, productivity. I am proud to work at Crowe. We are continuously focused on the well-being and development of our organization. As a result of our annual employee satisfaction survey, we have consistently scored highest in the fact that our employees feel comfortable at work being their authentic selves. If every organization in the world focuses on connecting, well-being, and the development of their employees, we can resolve division and radicalization, thus improving the world.

Jin Chen Head of European China Desk / Partner transfer pricing Crowe Foederer Accountancy

The significant challenge in many organizations is the lack of diversity in leadership. When the top of an organization is not diverse, a gap in understanding and representation of different perspectives within the organization emerges. Unfortunately, I have personally experienced a severe form of discrimination that was then downplayed by the organization’s leadership. I wouldn’t wish such experiences on anyone, but it still happens. If you want to create an inclusive organization, cultural change is inevitable. It is essential to promote equity, respect, and a sense of appreciation for all employees.

IN-DEPTH: STORYTILE #2

‘As an artist, it’s my civic duty to raise my voice to do good’

Edo: More crucial for life than accumulating material wealth or pursuing spiritual wisdom are human connections. The fact that you make and celebrate those connections through music expresses, for me, the value of music. It seems to come so easily to you, Shirma, both in your music and beyond. Why is that? Shirma: Because it’s in my DNA! If you knew my grandmother or great-grandmother, you would understand who I am. It all starts with my faith. God, love, is the reason I create space. I love to love; it feels good to acknowledge and see the other person. ‘Shirma is truly involved with me‘ - that’s who I am. I have inherited this and always have faith as the foundation of all I do. When I am connected to what is good for me, it comes naturally. Two hours of signing and taking photos is very common for me. People come to tell me that I have touched them. That can only happen because I show or make them feel that I am here and I see you.

‘As creative people, we often forget to fill our own cup’ Those who see you on stage and offstage will recognize this about you. Is it something you consciously use, or is it just a part of who you are? I am the train, and the music is the carrier, the bearer of what I consciously and unconsciously want to convey. And by that, I mean everything about the music: the conception, production, the performance and the release. This also touches on a part of my faith: ‘who does good, encounters good.’ Music, for me, is a platform. It’s the place that gives me a voice. It was Nina Simone who stated that as a creator, she said you have the responsibility to reflect the spirit and the social cohesion of the time we life in, in your work: ‘An artist’s duty, as fas as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.’ You must speak up, that’s an action. She found that very important, and so do I: As an artist, it’s a civic duty I have to raise my voice, to do good. Thanks to the music platform, I can do just a little more. I enjoy working for the good cause, speak out for target groups, see and embrace the target audience. My belief in God and the fact that I ‘love to love’ motivates and helps me. So, you use music both as a platform and as a form of personal expression. How do you maintain the balance between both? I believe in the music and people I work with. I surround myself with individuals who share the same inner love, love for the music and who

16

show compassion. Authenticity. I am cautious and selective in what I do and with whom I work. This way, I can ensure that I stay close to who I am. Does that have to do with trust? If I play music with people who don’t have the same values, it doesn’t work. It has to stay in sync with my vision. That way, both of us can convey our stories and be aligned with each other. We both played music in the same scene and share our love for artists like Jimi Hendrix and Aretha Franklin. Your new album ‘Celebrating Aretha Franklin’ was released today! Why Aretha? We have so much in common. The church, charitable causes, foundations for children’s education. Her work ethic. She did what she wanted. She was a risk-taker, fearless. She just did it. And I haven’t even mentioned her voice yet! You attended her funeral five years ago and met her family. Was that the moment your journey started? Absolutely, immediately I knew: I need to do something with this. It was only later that I thought about the framework, the purpose, the orchestra. Aretha’s lifestyle and her approach to artistry, her faith, and spirituality touch me so deeply, I hear that in her voice. It’s that character that I’m a fan of. I’m a fan of her ‘why,’ not just the ‘what’ about her. Aretha Franklin led a certain life, and you can feel that in the music. The same applies to the tragically young deceased Jimi Hendrix. He played phenomenally: virtuosic, innovative, spiritual, and above all, very beautiful because he had no musical fear. You can hear that. Do you think he would have remained as great if he had lived longer? These individuals share the commonality of leaving behind timeless cultural heritage. They spoke from an inner necessity, were authentic, and fearless. Bob Marley only lived to the age of 36, but wherever I go in the world, his legacy remains. Jimi Hendrix also had that natural connection. And, the new generation also listens to him, so we don’t know what would have happened if he was sill among us. These artists felt the need to express themselves. The songs were uncompromising - they can make you cry or go to bed with a certain feeling. Again this is timeless. The same happens with the ballads of saxophonist John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman. “Dedicated to You” is by far one of the most beautiful recordings. If you compare the style in which Hendrix worked to the current digital production and distribution methods of music, would it be much harder for him to stay relevant now? I call that urgent! Having the freedom and the will, that’s where the urgency comes from. Truly giving 100% because you cannot do otherwise. I also live with this urgency. People might say to me, ‘you’re a singer,’ but I prefer to feel myself first before expressing and giving. This

You’ve conceived it, so you want to go, to make it happen. That’s the urgency of creation. Therefore, a better question is, ‘How far do you want to go?’ We give, but we are also a product ourselves and are constantly utilized. We belong to everyone who needs something. With our high sense of responsibility, we forget to fill our own cup. We sell music, emotions, and experiences, but we are also the living water of connections. Before you know it, you are being lived. Layer upon layer upon layer.

Recently, you joined the Board of Directors of Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, where I am the director. What attracts you? Several things. As a creator and producer, I often interact with similar institutions. Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is significant, has a reputation, belongs to the crème de la crème. When the question arose, I found it natural to say yes because I want to contribute at a facilitative level. As a creator, it gives me the possibility to get a behind-the-scenes look and have an influential voice in what I would like to see. This includes considerations for inclusion and programming, which are handled very well! But also, from a managerial perspective, in a company like Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, factors like maintenance and vision are important: where do you want to go, what do you want to innovate, and

Few people move on your energy. Many primarily project their fears onto the opinions of others, but you visualize the result as you’d like it to be. You work hard to get there. You connect, have a spiritual foundation, and integrity. However, there are also examples in our sector of colleagues taking shortcuts. How do you maintain this unique energy when things get tough? There are plenty of makers and creators who move on the same frequency, but you don’t talk about it with each other. While I know vulnerability is your strength. What I give, I get back. I choose to be an artist and must be willing to be photographed. But what do I take, what do I want from you? That balance can easily go wrong. If I have a sold-out tour and go on stage, everyone will be looking at me. If it fails, not all those people fail, but I do. I could bypass myself, but I would be betraying myself. And I won’t do that. However, I do need to sometimes dare to step back, right in the middle of the storm. Like in the bible: David needed Goliath to come into his own strenght. For me, it means: See the bright spots and own them; it’s you.

‘Franklin, Hendrix, Marley, they have left behind some serious cultural heritage’ how to approach these? There’s so much involved. And then, the fact that you, Edo, asked me, it shows mutual respect and recognition of each other’s expertise. For me, that’s the most important reason. And it’s super exciting. You’ve been working on the album since April and oversee a whole crew, including musicians, tour managers and others. The writing, recording, mixing, distributing, and now presenting it to the public asks for a vision on leadership: do you consider ‘the greater good on a daily basis? My job would be incredibly dull if I didn’t prioritize people. This includes, as you also mention, not only taking responsibility for individuals in their roles but also for their families. Everyone’s personal story, and sometimes language and cultural barriers, come into play and require your guidance. How can I inspire and connect with them, offer more that is interesting to them? The goal is to create a healthy and inspiring work environment where everyone feels valued and contributes to the greater good. But if you do too much too quickly, unrest arises. You have to pause, put the brakes on, until you can efficiently move forward again.

Jimi Hendrix created a more informal collaboration of musicians to make music in an open and experimental way. He called it the Electric Church. You also describe yourself as a spiritual catalyst who leads people to live in connection and creates the conditions for it. Correct. This is my church. And the church is love. My task is to con-

‘Love is living water. Every drop of love we give creates a wave. That is my aspiration.’ nect people in love. In my analogy, we are all a vast ocean. But every drop of love we give creates a ripple - the living water. You feel an additional piece of love for yourself and towards each other. Love is the living water that I aspire to. n

How far do you go in that regard? As creative people, we are entirely focused on the vision - on what we do and who it needs to reach. You are leading, the leader in what you do.

We believe in the power of art & culture and we aim to understand and appreciate the natural drive behind it. With Storytiles we explore the heartbeat and impact of culture, providing a platform for conversations and encounters.

They will function as puzzle pieces that together will expose the value and meaning of culture. goes beyond passion and beyond having a sense of purpose. It’s allencompassing, truly everything. It goes straight to the heart. It reminds me of powerful speeches, such as Martin Luther King’s at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Regardless of the incredible content of his speech, the power, the urgency, the deep sense of respect for humanity. He speaks to the hearts of the people. It moves me, this truly comes from my vanes.

In connection with, creating, experiencing, and living. What is the superlative for you? In Bussum I played jazz classics for Vier het Leven, an organization for the elderly, acoustically. It was a fantastic audience, with an average age of around eighty. Those people enjoyed music so much. I asked them, ‘Are you here with someone you deeply love? Just go ahead and tell them. Tell the people who are always there, tell your colleague without whom the day is dull.’ The whole room was filled with joy. There were a son with his mother, at a very advanced age. She came to say, ‘I thought I would never hear ‘I love you’ again. But tonight, it happened.’ Bringing people to such ecstasy that you can surprise them is so beautiful and makes me very grateful.

What Ever Happened to Mr. Pete

EINDHOVENS COMEDY FESTIVAL

‘A virtuosity and musicality surpassed by no other clarinetist (perhaps instrumentalist), at least in my memory,’ wrote a critic from The New York Times about Martin Fröst. ‘Indescribable, this you must experience, heavenly and rugged at the same time,’ said a critic from Le Figaro. This wonder clarinetist and music magician will perform solo at Philzuid in Dance Mosaic, a segment from his acclaimed program Xodus. In it, he intertwines folk, jazz, and classical elements into a colorful combination of dance music that sparks with energy. After the intermission, he ascends the conductor’s podium to lead the orchestra in Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.

What Ever Happened to Mr. Pete is not your usual play. This estranging theatrical experience is a quest for the truth behind Mr. Pete.

Who is he? And who are we, actually? A necessary question in times of algorithms, digitization, and the celebration of our happiness as free individuals. It’s a performance about loneliness, community, and the loss of control. Losing grip and feeling alone in that experience. It’s a shared journey because Mr. Pete, too, discovers himself in short, humorous scenes populated by a colorful cast of characters.

EL TIGRE BLANCO

MARGOT ROS

A tragicomic evening on the edge of real and absolutely made up. Margôt Ros leads the way: hilarious, poignant, sparkling and sometimes painful. Celebrate, but with a lump in your throat.

At the age of thirteen, she fell in love. ‘Suddenly, I didn’t just find music beautiful; I fell in love, and it was with one piece.’

Sweat droplets illuminated by the lights, glitter on pants, and the wind in your hair. In the carousel of your dreams, the impossible approaches near, and the night is a celebration. International burlesque starlet Xarah von Den Vielenregen and Eindhoven EL Tigre Blanco treat you an experience of escapism. Just as colorful and surreal as the brushstrokes of grandmaster Dalí himself.

Ros talks about family quarrels that get completely out of hand, losing virginity during carnival, comforting sausage rolls, and other Brabant crown jewels. In procession, she showcases memorable characters and lively anecdotes from her youth, and she gives ‘our pa’ the rightful leading role. In Brabantse nachten zijn lang (audience favorite of 2022), Ros shows how you can celebrate life until the very last moment and that dying well is an art.

That piece was music by Brahms. Two years later, she played his Violin Concerto. ‘Because I learned it at such a young age, it’s in my body. I feel free when I play it.’ Brahms’ Violin Concerto was once called a concerto against the violin. But not for Alena Baeva. She gives this masterpiece wings, from the heavenstorming opening to the dancing finale. Even more wings and winged tales in Stravinsky’s Song of the Nightingale, based on Andersen’s fairy tale, and the thrilling Firebird.

With their hauning, gothic art-pop and ambient noise, Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys take you into raw emotions and poetic introspection.

“India Day, we celebrate the enriched everything India culture. Immerse yourself in the enchanting colors, flavors, and sounds of India. In the foyers and halls of Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, you can enjoy live performances with (traditional) dance and music, taste delicious Indian food at various stalls on the bazaar and participate in various workshops in the field of traditional arts and crafts such as yoga, martial arts, and painting. All regions and languages are represented in the program.”

The South African artist moved to Berlin in 2018 and released the ‘Tapes’ trilogy together with The Lost Boys; a series of grim and melancholic records about finding your way in a new city. The new album ‘Heaving’ picks up where this series ended, and the new-found stability goes hand in hand with experimentation. Which can be heard in a more expansive sound full of Depeche Mode-esque darkness, fear, elation, longing and hope that falls somewhere between Savages, Emma Ruth Rundle and Chelsea Wolfe. See Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys together with Nevin and Ellenor Vora in Stroomhuis.

Moya Brennan (the voice of Clannad)

Sue the Night is back! You might know them from songs like The Whale, The World Below, Top of Mind and Mind Dear. The band previously performed their perfect indie pop on the festival grounds of Zwarte Cross, Best Kept Secret and Paaspop, among others. The dreamy voice of frontwoman Suus in combination with melancholic melodies moves and enchants. A long break followed from 2018 until after the corona period. Whether singer Suus has been sitting still? Certainly not! Ample time was taken to write and find musicians to translate the whole in the studio. The result? A new album is on its way. Don’t miss out!

CHRISTMAS SONGS

“Moya Brennan, the voice of Clannad, has already touched many hearts with her beautiful and distinctive vocal style. In addition to a wonderful and impressive career, she has also been honored with a Grammy. With Clannad stopping in 2022 after 52 (!) years, this allows Moya Brennan the space to tour under her own name. In December, she will travel through the Netherlands with her own band, presenting a Christmas program that brings warmth to a concert at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. The concert will not only feature Christmas songs but also include songs from Clannad, solo projects, and film themes.”

Jett Rebel SUPER SWEET 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY TOUR

The members of These New South Whales do not have blood running through their veins, but pure entertainment.

In 2013 he suddenly appeared: Jett Rebel. With his hits Louise and Tonight he shot to the top like a comet and the Netherlands was a real phenomenon richer.

‘La Divina’ Maria Callas: this year she would have turned one hundred. Renowned for her uniqueness and versatile singing and acting talent, Callas remains a great inspiration for contemporary opera singers. The prima donna of our time, Francis van Broekhuizen, steps into the shoes of Maria Callas, narrating and singing her eventful life story with her most beautiful arias, such as Casta diva and Vissi d’arte, serving as the thread throughout. She is accompanied by various prominent vocalists and, of course, by Phion, under the baton of conductor George Petrou.

WHAT A GREAT PUNK

They are known as one of the best punk bands in Australia - with multiple headline tours across Australia, the UK and Europe - and are probably the only ones to also have a successful run on Comedy Central. In 2022, their podcast ‘What A Great Punk’ debuted in Spotify’s top 5 music podcasts and their latest album ‘TNSW’ was released. These New South Whales started as a passion project for parodies. Yet you can safely say that their musical career has transcended their comedy. With their irresistible songwriting and old school energy, they have followed a similar trajectory to genre-bending bands like Ceremony or Turnstile. And it’s raining rave reviews.

10 years later, all-rounder Jett Rebel has become an indispensable part of the (international) rock circuit and this has to be celebrated with a tour of the finest concert halls in the Netherlands. Jett Rebel’s Super Sweet 10 Year Anniversary Tour will be a series of musical highlights from 10 years of Jett Rebel. After more than 600 performances in clubs, theaters and festivals, the best has yet to come.

JANUARY CAME CLOSE

AKADEMIE FÜR ALTE MUSIK BERLIN

In May, Cardinal Black had to cancel their performance at the Bridge Festival due to the big fire in the city centre, but now they are coming to Eindhoven for an intimate show in the Kleine Zaal of Effenaar.

Handel’s Messiah: the most beloved oratorio of all time. Just think of the radiant Hallelujah chorus alone. This evening, it will be performed by none other than the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.

On their debut album, ‘January Came Close’ rock and soulful blues come together in a unique love project. And with tracks like ‘Tell Me How It Feels,’ ‘Terra Firma’ and ‘Rise Up,’ singer Tom Hollister and guitarist Chris Buck reveal themselves as world-class artists.

This award-winning ensemble specializes in authentic performances of Baroque music. Together with the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin and top soloists Julia Doyle (soprano), Benno Schachtner (alto), Alexander Sprague (tenor), and Neal Davies (bass), this promises to be an evening you won’t want to miss!

The story of Cardinal Black begins in 2010: Hollister, Buck and drummer Adam Roberts gained musical momentum. They were praised by some of the biggest names in British rock like Steve Winwood, who invited the band to his secret Wincraft Studios. This in turn was followed by a phone call from Alan Niven Guns N’ Roses’ manager – who had big plans for the band in the American scene in Nashville. Due to circumstances the band lost momentum, but now they are back. And better than ever before!

The Dutch Queen Tribute

“After their first successful tour, Celtic Steps is returning to the Netherlands! Enthusiasts of Irish folk, Christmas, and traditional dance are in for a treat with this grand Irish dance and music show featuring sixteen dancers and musicians on stage.

All the big hits and beloved album tracks of the great rock band ‘Queen’ are presented in detail in an energetic show.

The piano soloist touches a chord to the right, a bass note to the left, initially casually, but increasingly intense, culminating in: ‘Yes, that glowing string melody...’

The show is presented by the renowned Irish Riverdance company Celtic Steps, which has been in existence for over twelve years. Especially for Christmas, they are coming to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven with ‘An Irish Christmas’!”

The unmistakable Second Piano Concerto by Rachmaninov. It is etched in our collective memory. ‘His playing between spiritual calmness and deep empathy is gripping,’ wrote the Washington Post about pianist Boris Giltburg. This Piano Concerto is one of his signature pieces. His recording of it even earned a prominent place in the Gramophone top 10 of ‘Rachmaninov recordings.’ After this piano celebration, our guest conductor Jun Märkl gives wings to Stravinsky’s Song of the Nightingale and the thrilling Firebird.

From the superior vocal range of Freddie Mercury to the refined dynamics of Brian May, from the melodic bass parts of John Deacon to the characteristic grooves of Roger Taylor, forged together by Freddie’s recognizable piano parts. The music of the rock giants Queen has now left a significant mark on our culture. The fact that their countless hits are timeless is evident from the large fan base that only grows with each new generation. National Park Bosland:

largest adventure forest just across the border The countryside and green area is not new, but its recognition as a National Park is. With thousands of hectares, Bosland is the largest in Flanders and close to the Brainport region. Do you know it? TEXT: MARIE-JOSÉ DEKKERSI | PHOTO’S: NATIONAAL PARK BOSLAND

24

CLIMATE ROBUST The driving forces behind this are the Flemish Municipalities of Peer, Lommel (also walking municipality of the year), Pelt and Hechtel-Eksel. They each have their own information office that - in beautiful Flemish style - is the reception for visitors. The Dutch Bergeijk and Flemish Mol were initially also expected to participate. Those municipalities are still interested and are again looking at cooperation or participation. Bladel and Eersel have also shown interest.

The Lommelse Sahara, a mini desert, is also in Bosland. The sandy area is clearly visible from the Reus van Bosland, the 38-meter-high lookout tower.

ATTRACTION Above all, Bosland is an attraction for the million visitors annually. It is located just across the border and therefore easily accessible from Brainport, within half an hour by car. Bosland appeals to everyone: children, campers, picnickers, walkers, runners, cyclists, mountain bikers, horse riders and wheelchair users. A multi-day stay, or holiday is also

A literal highlight is Cycling through the Trees. You cycle to the tops of the trees via a double, 700m long, circle. The Hovenring, but green! Since its opening in 2019, 800,000 cyclists have made this climb. There are also three adapted wheelchair and pushchair paths, including experience equipment. You can also be active on the 400kms of walking routes, 300kms of cycling and mountain bike routes, 150kms of equestrian routes and 70 running routes.

ON A QUEST However, recognition is subject to conditions: several observations from the jury report must be resolved within a year, but these should not be insurmountable, according to Bosland. In any case, the intention is to expand the park, including walkways and ecoducts. A wildlife warning system has even been installed that ensures far fewer traffic accidents involving animals. Bosland will be the most child-friendly forest in Flanders and an attractive international park with ecological value. That is the ambition. The domain would like to expand and de-fragment by making connections where there are currently enclaves and barriers. The park must also become climate-robust by coping with challenges such as drought, flooding, and heat. Heritage also plays a role. The area has been inhabited and cultivated for thousands of years. Archaeological finds point to ancient cultural sites and burial mounds and there are traces of prehistoric land cultivation in the Celtic Fields. More recently, sand, wood and coal were extracted, which also left visible traces in the landscape, such as lakes and commercial forests.

‘Most child-friendly forest of Flanders with ecological value’ possible, because the area has campsites, B&Bs, hotels, marinas, camper pitches, holiday parks and houses. In the many catering establishments, local products play a leading role, from gin to tea and from beers to cookies. The hosts, together with well-known Flemish people and the forest rangers, are ambassadors for Bosland.

Children - and of course their parents - are the most important Bosland target group, which is why it is subtitled “the largest adventure forest in Flanders”. There are and will be play forests and playgrounds, treasure hunts and nature treasure hunts. Along the way, young visitors can encounter giant insects, play, do geo-coaching or go on an expedition in the (Lommel) Sahara. There are forest learning trails, obstacle courses and various adventurous and educational children’s walks, and they are also interesting for older visitors.” n

fter 17 years, Bosland was given the label of National Park Flanders in October. The recognition also means that additional investments will be made in the coming years in nature development and protection, recreation, research, and heritage.

Want to know more? Check bosland.be or download the brochure on the website.bosland.be

OUR OWN ‘BIG FIVE’ Although not a completely adjoining nature reserve - there is a nature centre of more than 6,500 hectares, 7 sub-centres of more than 200 hectares and 8 nature reserves - Bosland has a lot to offer for essential nature management and conservation that is recognized by European programmes. Large parts of the park belong to the European Natura 2000 network. The park is the initiator and founder of the Flemish FSC group for sustainable forest management. Various rare and endangered animal species live here. Bosland calls them their own Big Five (wolf, eagle owl, fox, roe deer and wild boar) and Magnificent Seven (nightjar, spring fire spider, smooth snake, field fritillary butterfly, woodlark, garlic toad and kingfisher). The rather picky raven has also settled there. The landscapes are equally varied; from sand dunes to lakes and fens and from heathland to peat and coniferous forests. 25

HOTSPOTS NOT TO BE MISSED: DE CACAOFABRIEK A concert hall, cinema, exhibition hall and brasserie all under one roof. This is where they used to produce cocoa, nowadays it’s a hotbed of creativity

HET SPEELHUIS This theatre in a church is an architectural highlight. Watch performances in an unusual setting.

CUBE HOUSES These tall iconic houses, designed by Piet Blom, were once world news. Nowadays they are one of Helmond’s most noticeable eyecatchers.

Countryside just around the corner! To be sure, Helmond is a bustling city with plenty of chance to shop, eat and soak up culture. What you maybe didn’t know is that there are beautiful areas of natural beauty to be discovered. The best of both worlds, in our opinion. Go outdoors and get a different view of Helmond. Visit the city parks with their rich history, stroll endlessly through the woods where you may come face to face with deer, or get on your bike to make the most of all these different areas. In other words: if you like exploring highways and the byways, Helmond gives you the space, and it’s all so beautiful. “That’s a promise!

“Helmond gives you the space, and it’s all so beautiful. That’s a promise!”

Sample and enjoy Are you a bit of a foodie? If so, you’re in luck. Life is good in Helmond, and so is the food. You can choose from a wide range of restaurants, bars and cafes. If it’s a quick snack you want, go to a cafeteria. If you like to be pampered, fine dining is an option. And have you ever eaten Polish food? A versatile city like Helmond is home to a whole range of international cuisine. Drinking and dancing People-watching over a drink; what a treat! There are various places on the Market or the Havenplein square where you will be well looked after the whole afternoon. The Steenweg is the place to have a chat with your friends, where you can drink delicious wines, mocktails or a gin and tonic. Not ready to go home yet? Then have a dance at the Muziekcafé.

Unusual routes What better way is there to discover the city than by using a marked-out route? Admire historic buildings or modern street art, wander past works of art or surprise yourself with the poetry that appears everywhere. You can literally go whichever way you want. Various route booklets are available at the VVV Tourist Office. To make sure you don’t miss anything, you can go on a city or street art walking tour with an experienced guide. They will be able to tell you wonderful anecdotes and great stories.

If you want to stay up to date, you can see what’s being planned in the visithelmond.nl online calendar.

Always something to do!

There’s plenty to do in Helmond. Many events are organised at all times of the year, most of them large, often free and always lots of fun. Visitors from far and wide find their way to the Sinterklaas Kasteel, the Kasteeltuinconcerten or the big fair each spring.

Want to learn more about technology while having fun? Visit the Philips Museum and participate in Museum Kids Factory during the Christmas vacation. Children aged 5 and up get to work with the 3D printer and 3D pen, they can do drawing, coloring and crafting. Are you already 8 years old? Then you can learn about electronic circuits, soldering, drilling and sawing. Learn more about technological innovations at the Philips Museum Be amazed by technology during one of our mini-lectures on a variety of topics from the history of technology. You can attend the mini-lectures, given by a Philips expert, on several weekends in December. Some of the topics are: ‘from analog to digital’, ‘the fascination of innovation’, ‘x-rays, from technology to health’, ‘from radio lamp to LED lamp’, and ‘sound as fast as light’. Museum Kids Factory: December 27 to 30 and January 2 to 7. Minicolleges: 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 & 17 December

General opinion is that black light only makes white colours stand out. In fact, this light accentuates all fluorescent colours and materials as well. Another trait of fluorescent paint is that it creates a sensational effect of depth. If you add shapes and objects, you get a surreal landscape where you can give free reign to your imagination. Werner Klompen, born in Roggel, Limburg, has been working with black light for more than 30 years. While he initially worked exclusively with paint on flat surfaces, over time his arsenal has expanded and he now also creates work with 3D pens. With utmost patience he builds up layer by layer to create these uniquely bizarre landscapes. The whimsical, fascinating images evoke associations with creatures from the deep sea or fungal networks or a host of other possible interpretations. This window exhibition can be viewed for free from the street. The effect of black light is only really visible when it is dark outside!!!

UNITED COWBOYS

The exhibition will feature work that consists of one color or in which a color is very decisive. Anne Vincent Dijkstra paints disturbing everyday situations using only Prussian blue. Bram Hermens work is characterized by the merging of contemporary and historical sources. With a sense of nostalgia Eliot Allsop gives us a glimpse of the future. Rick van Strien is guided through the gallery during Talenthub jump! He explores emotion and use of color in his paintings.

United Cowboys has something to celebrate. This year the company exist for 30 years. At the invitation of Parktheater, we will present 2 evenings of a program full of dance, music, images and performance in the Philipszaal. The space where we have often been guests to take advantage of all the possibilities and impossibilities; a space in which we feel very comfortable and have somewhat grown up with. We do this with ‘old’ cowboys, with new ones and with a host of guests. We show intimate - mainly solo - work, combine it with monumental images, we let you watch from a safe chair, but we also let you go every now and then to view parts at your own pace and in your own order. ITS (IM)POSSIBLE FORMATION ON AMASSING AND ASSEMBLING A PUBLISHING PRACTICE

An exhibition that delves into the publishing practice of Onomatopee, looking both backwards and towards the future. Here, almost all the books Onomatopee has ever published are on display and in conversation with each other, the space, and the reader. Displayed at the heart of the space is a shelving unit from the warehouse, turned into a dynamic and democratic altar of books. We challenge the more conventional ‘warehouse’ perception by transforming the room into an abundant sanctuary of reading, writing, (re)searching. Within this collage-like set-up, we explore the intricate relationship between object and book, where the books themselves emerge as artistic objects too. We extend to you an open invitation: choose a book, take a seat, make notes, and gently return it to the center; thereby perpetually reshaping the choreography of our initial arrangement. Ornithology

ANNE GEENE & ARJAN DE NOOY Study of birds, but pseudoscientific and with a good dose of humor Ornithology refers to the scientific study of birds, including their physiology, classification, ecology and behaviour. Due to their visibility and colourful appearance, birds are a popular subject of both the sciences and the visual arts – photography in particular. With their pseudo-scientific approach Geene & De Nooy defy the borders between these disciplines. Their classification of bird pictures exhibits the humorous outcome of creative and associative thinking, opening new perspectives on the subject. The exhibition may be seen both as a photographer’s study of birds and as an ornithologist’s excursion into photography. It is highly recommended by Charles Darwin, Harper Lee, Humphrey Bogart, Charlie Parker and Woody Woodpecker, amongst many others.

INNOVATIE

WHAT IS THE POWER OF THIS BREEDING GROUND OF INNOVATION?

The Automotive Campus, Innovation in overdrive

On the western edge of Helmond, a stone’s throw from Eindhoven, the Automotive Campus shines as a futuristic hub of local pride and global innovation. Amid this regional hotspot of creativity and technological advancement, companies, municipalities, and academic institutions come together to forge the future of mobility. From electric vehicles to self-driving cars, this campus breathes life into the rapidly evolving automotive world, and all in our backyard. TEXT: MARTIJN VAN DER VEN | PHOTOGRAPHY: KEES MARTENS/DCI MEDIA

When you think of a typical Dutch car brand, you probably think of DAF. The Eindhoven truck builder played a major role in the creation of the Automotive Campus. In 1975, Volvo Cars took over the passenger car branch of DAF and established itself on Steenovenweg in Helmond, right next to the current campus site. Until the end of the 1970s, Volvo Cars produced DAF models with a Volvo nameplate. Afterwards, the Volvo 300 and 400 series were developed in Helmond and produced in the factory in Born. In 1991, NedCar was founded as the successor to Volvo Cars, a joint venture with the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Volvo Cars Corporation, and the Dutch State. NedCar produced popular models on a large scale such as the Volvo S/V40, Mitsubishi Carisma and the Spacestar. In 2001, NedCar’s development department became independent under the name PDE Automotive. In 2003, TNO established the VEHIL lab for active safety systems in Helmond, and in 2006 TNO moved all its automotive activities from Delft to Helmond. In 2008, the idea of a campus was discussed for the first time and a year later the Automotive Campus officially opened its gates. Companies such as Siemens and NXP Semi-conductors will collaborate there from 2023? and Fontys Hogescholen, Eindhoven University of Technology, DAF Trucks and Lightyear will soon follow. Eindless Magazine lists the strengths of this breeding ground of innovation, where the future of mobility is forged.

>> International connections Through collaborations with global players such as Siemens, TomTom and NXP, the campus contributes to the global automotive agenda. This means that the innovations that take place here have an impact not only locally, but also globally. According to Kurt Sievers, CEO of NXP, “The Automotive Campus is a laboratory for the mobility revolution we are living in today.”

>> Education as a driving force Fontys Hogescholen is one of the educational institutions that play an active role on campus. This direct connection between education and industry lays a solid foundation for 36

the development of future professionals and stimulates a continuous flow of fresh ideas. In addition to Fontys, other (educational) institutions, such as TU/e, Innovam, Summa and Rijkswaterstaat, also work closely with companies on campus. This educational network not only promotes knowledge transfer, but also enables students to immediately apply their

Concepts hit the road, shaping the future with every turn skills in practice. In the words of Robert-Jan Smits, Chairman of the TU/e Executive Board: “The Automotive Campus is a unique environment where students are immersed in the most advanced developments in the field of mobility.”

>> Testing ground for smart mobility The A270 highway runs in front of the Automotive Campus. A kilometre-long real-life test environment equipped with cameras, transponders, and WiFi beacons. TNO plays a key role in testing smart mobility solutions. “From advanced traffic management systems to connected vehicles, this testing ground accelerates the development and implementation of technologies that will transform our mobility,” says Paul de Krom, CEO of TNO until earlier this year.

>> Open innovation in practice Companies such as DAF Trucks and KPN embrace the principle of open innovation on campus. Sharing knowledge and working together towards common goals not only promotes rapid technological development, but also strengthens cohesion within the Brainport region. Preston Feight, former CEO of DAF Trucks, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “The Automotive Campus is a unique place where we work together on mobility of the future.”

>> Sustainability as a guideline Figurehead of sustainable mobility, Lightyear, was founded in 2017 by students from TU/e and worked on solar energy-driven vehicles on campus. Only a few solar cars ultimately saw the light of day, but the company is not standing still. Lightyear is now focusing on making solar panels for cars from other manufacturers. Lex Hoefsloot, CEO of Lightyear: “We still believe that the Automotive Campus is the ideal place to realize our sustainable mobility vision and have a positive impact on the world.” DENS (Dutch Energy Solutions) shows that sustainability can reach even further than the sun. This startup develops sustainable engines on formic acid!

>> Community engagement The Automotive Campus is not just a business park; it is a community hub. Events such as Automotive Week attract local companies such as ASML and Philips, but also curious residents. This promotes awareness, creates pride, and actively involves regional residents in the fast-paced world of mobility innovation.

>> Beyond borders More than 1,250 people work at the Automotive Campus. The impact of the Campus extends far beyond the region. Indirectly, this gathering place influences internationally successful companies such as ASML, Philips and the Japanese Sekisui, but also startups. The campus contributes to the Brainport region’s global reputation as a hub of technological progress.

CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION The Automotive Campus is not static and is constantly evolving. With companies such as TNO, NXP and Siemens as active participants, this hub of innovation continues to explore new paths and push boundaries in the search for breakthrough mobility solutions. The future starts here. n

My favourite season has been underway for a while. I love the colours, the falling leaves, the mushrooms, and the unpredictable weather. In the Netherlands, we say the ‘r’ is in the month, meaning autumn has started, and winter is on its way! The season of speculaas (spiced cookies), soup, and stamppot (mashed pot). Stamppot may not sound appealing to everyone; mashing food and putting it in a pot? Yes, that’s correct, but it’s much more than that. Stamppot is a serious part of Dutch culture. The potato, popular in the Low Countries, forms the base and is indeed mashed with vegetables in a pan. It originated in times when we didn’t have luxury stovetops, and it was practical to cook food in just one pot. There are many variations of stamppot, but boerenkoolstamppot (mashed kale) served with gravy and smoked sausage called rookworst (also available in a vegetarian version) is by far the most popular winter dish in our country. Many Dutch people love stamppot; for us, it’s comfort food in the colder season and the difficult and uncertain times we are living in. In addition to stamppot, the Dutch also love soup, especially in autumn and winter. Making soup and eating it together has a cozy feel; it fosters a sense of togetherness, and people often talk about the soup they’ve made ‘what’s in it?’

C O L U M N M AT H I L D E

From stamppot to stroopwafel At my workplace, I always celebrate my birthday in November with homemade pumpkin soup and hot worstenbroodjes (sausage rolls). Actually, sausage rolls are a typical treat in Brabant - you won’t find them in other parts of the country. Often, there’s a story behind food. The tradition was to eat the roll after the Catholic church service. The sausage roll originated because farmers were looking for new techniques to preserve meat. Ground meat stayed fresh longer when rolled in dough and baked. Another thing we love is cookies with coffee. We, Dutchies, have a reputation for offering only one and quickly closing the cookie jar. Maybe it’s our frugal nature? There are all kinds of varieties with special names like bokkenpootjes, Jan Hagel, kattentongen, or speculaas. The king of cookies is, of course, the stroopwafel, and it’s well known worldwide. It seems that the sticky waffle originated in Gouda around 1800. Although the Dutch kitchen is modest and certainly not ‘haute cuisine,’ we are still a bit proud of it. Food is a form of recognition of your culture. It tells about who you are, where you come from, your country, customs and your family. It brings cultures closer together. Our students love our sausage rolls, stroopwafels, and maybe even our stamppot; we embrace their falafels, baklava, and empanadas. We proudly exchange each other’s recipes, admire the displayed food after the last lessons, and talk and taste together. Food as a binding agent. As we say in the Netherlands, ‘When the pot is boiling, friendship blossoms.’

speaks these difficult words. The doctor delivered the news that she had finished her treatment. The chemotherapy she had the day before is only to prolong her life. er eyes shine when she starts to talk. “These bags are also made here, by Rony. Every bag I sell takes at least an hour, I offer conversation and I receive conversation”. For a moment the disease seems to have faded into the background. Hannie has fun with the other volunteers. Together they form the Team Lekker Important Foundation, and they fight against cancer. Connection and conviviality have a powerful healing effect. Wim, Hannie’s helpful husband, is the nativity scene man in the store. He repairs and fixes them. Wim shares his thoughts: “For Hannie this is a way to cope, and I can get away from the disease for a while. In a relaxed atmosphere, the Christmas atmosphere. It takes you into another world for a moment and makes you forget everything.” Wim works at a large funeral director in the Netherlands. “I feel like eighty percent of my work results from cancer. This means that we are far from finished here, we still have many great things to do.” Hannie and Wim both clearly get a lot of strength and encouragement from this initiative. The strength they need to keep laughing together in a hopeless situation.

UNIQUE VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE TREASURES It took her some effort to get the vintage section off the ground in the Christmas thrift store, but Mirella Fila-Cloosterman succeeded, and it is going very well. “People underestimate the value of vintage. They think it’s just a ball but there is a world full of collectors.” She starts to say with enthusiasm: “We buy things at the Breda fair to breathe new life into pieces. Take this bird, the feathers faded. It is from around 1920 and survived the war.” Like a true Christmas wine waiter, Mirella shares the unique details about each vintage Christmas piece. “This new vintage department is unique in the Netherlands and people come from far

’People underestimate the value of vintage’ and wide for the rare vintage pieces. There is only one Christmas thrift store like this in the whole of the Netherlands. We are even much cheaper than many other thrift stores in the area. This makes people with a small budget happy. Everything that does not have a price tag is priced as follows: “Small balls are five

cents and large balls are ten cents. The real vintage stuff is of course more expensive. But there is much more than just that, you name it, the store has it.” “Anyone who loves beautiful Christmas decorations or likes to contribute to charity is also welcome. ‘You give something to us, and we give something back to you,’ is the motto. I would like to call on everyone to donate old Christmas items, we want to raise as much money as possible!”

THERE IS NO GREATER SIGN OF CHRISTMAS SPIRIT THAN SAVING LIVES The sparkling Christmas shop in the WoensXL Shopping Centre is like a cozy community center for everyone who could use a bright spot in their lives. All proceeds from the Christmas thrift store go to charities such as the KWF, No Guts No Glory and the Eindhoven centre for people with and after cancer, De Eik. Mirella: “You will find many volunteers from Centrum De Eik here. Thanks to them, lives are being changed and people whose lives have been turned upside down in an instant are not alone. Their commitment is really about life before, during and after cancer.” In just thirteen years, Team Lekker Important raised a lot of money, an impressive €700,000. This amount formed the bridge to a breakthrough. When Hannie had her operation, a doctor approached her. Euphoric, he revealed that thanks to this money, a new medicine had been made possible, a new chance at life. This allows the cancer to be kept under control for patients who are still relatively healthy. A fantastic victory for Team Lekker Important! Hannie accepted the new life-extending treatment with both hands. It is sad to hear that it is too late for her, the drug did not work for a complete recovery. n
