Reflection and contemplation on connection With this last issue (No 7) of 2023, the first year of Eindless comes to an end. We started the international magazine in the form of a newspaper before the summer holidays. The reactions are as enthusiastic and positive as ever. We gratefully accept them but will use the coming weeks of relative peace - the next Eindless will not be published until February - to re-examine the format and formula of the magazine. One reason for this is the acquisition by Eindless Media of “HOWDO”, ‘the magazine for internationals’, which also appears in South-East Brabant. “HOWDO” is a funny English corruption of the Brabant greeting ‘houdo’. Unlike Eindless, “HOWDO” can only be read in English. The free magazine is published every two months in a handy format that makes it easy to carry. “HOWDO” is packed with stories and relevant information for internationals that can be inter-changed with Eindless, and vice versa, of course. Under the influence of economic developments, the media landscape in the Brainport region is subject to change. “WATT Magazine” is only published digitally, and “Licht op Eindhoven” is also exchanging paper for the internet. The question is whether this is a worrying or a pleasant development. The Eindhoven region deserves a diverse, mature media landscape, with room for independent journalistic media, outside the “Eindhovens Dagblad” and/or “Omroep Brabant”. That is just as much part of living and working in a metropolitan region.

In fact, regional media, both offline on paper and online, are a significant factor in connecting groups of people in society. Anyone who wants to build a bridge between all regional residents must be aware of the importance of media in the communication chain. Also, paper media. Focusing on online communication alone excludes entire groups of less digitally skilled people. We think it would be a good idea to consider this and use the coming days for reflection and contemplation of connection. We wish everyone an inspiring, successful, and healthy New Year. Howdo and see you in 2024!

In 2021, DJ and icon Lady Aïda Spaninks, also known as Rebelbass, passed away. She gifted ‘her Eindhoven’ with an artwork, a labyrinth in Philips de Jongh Park, intended as a place for people to connect. Seen from a different angle, the labyrinth presents an entirely new image, as shown in this photo by Willem Wouterse.

Dear Readers, While I was driving to the office in the car, ‘Radio 4 Brainport’ passed by and over the next half hour I spoke to people from different countries who are building a new future in Brainport Eindhoven. It was nice to hear a short interview with an Indian woman about the origins and success of ‘Bollywood’, after which her favorite hit was played. A German hit and a Hollywood hit followed. I had heard of the cultural festivals in the Music Building before, but the enthusiasm of the Indian people really made me curious. Brainport is a technology region but, above all, a region with a great diversity of people and cultural backgrounds who meet each other; in

the workplace, while shopping, within associations, in residential areas and while experiencing culture. Together we are Brainport and we work towards success. Because, thanks to that great diversity, in this case mainly of young people, we enrich society, new ideas arise, we learn from each other and we gain understanding of each other. We are resilient, flexible, create a society in which we contribute to the growth and prosperity of Brainport, and are more open to international cooperation and involvement.

Yes, there are challenges in housing all newcomers to our beautiful region, but together we get a lot in return!

WAITING LISTS FOR SPORTS CLUBS DUE TO GROWTH OF THE CITY

Change clothes at home or play football on artificial grass? MAES VAN LANSCHOT

for the doctor, for a school. It is the price of the success of the Brainport economic formula, which has made growth here twice as big as in the country. Anyone who wants to become a member of a sports club is also increasingly told that there is, unfortunately, a waiting list. TEXT: HANS MATHEEUWSEN | PHOTO: EINDHOVEN MUNICIPALITY

I

n Eindhoven , 2,000 children, young people and adults are waiting for a place on a football team. Amateur football takes the cake. But swimming - including swimming lessons -, athletics, cricket, beach volleyball and tennis/padell now also have waiting lists. Many indoor sports, including gymnastics, suffer from a lack of space. According to Eindhoven councilor for sports and finance, Maes van Lanschot (CDA), among other things, this is a problem that the municipality is going to tackle. The growth of Eindhoven and the surrounding area has resulted in more residents and therefore greater pressure on all facilities. The city is the fastest growing municipality in the Netherlands. The expectation is around 243,000 inhabitants by the beginning of January 2024 and 300,000 in six years, and almost a million in the Brainport region. A hundred years ago, Eindhoven had less than 6,500 inhabitants. Eindhoven is currently exploding. There is therefore talk of a jump in scale, in other words: the city is becoming busier and larger on all fronts. ASML is generally called a driver of the economy. The comparison with Philips’ expansion in the last century has been made more than once. ASML makes very advanced machines for microchip production, the tiny circuits in electronic devices such as your smartphone. All suppliers in the region are growing in its wake. ASML and its suppliers attract expert workers from all over the world. They want to work and live here.

PLAY HARD According to the credo ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’, many internationals and their families want to practice their favorite sport, also as a team. The Eindhoven Municipality encourages sports. “Work hard, play hard,” says councilor Maes van Lanschot. “Because so many people are on the move, waiting lists are created. “In itself a good thing, after all: with sports, people’s health and vitality also increase. But it is currently putting pressure on the facilities.”

to the Municipality, seventeen artificial grass. That is not enough. There are other things that play a role in causing scarcity. Sports clubs function with the grace of volunteers. There is a shortage of them. Furthermore, not all accommodation is in equally good condition, or there is simply a shortage of changing rooms.

‘2,000 children on the waiting list is simply too many’ ARTIFICIAL GRASS The Municipality is mapping the total need, Van Lanschot answers. A housing plan will then be drawn up for the sports clubs in the city, and financial or political-administrative choices will have to be made next year. As a Councilor, he knows there won’t be money for everything. So, he speaks of short and long-term solutions for combating waiting lists. A simple example could be that players change at home and no longer at the club. And a more drastic solution, according to Van Lanschot, is to expand accommodation. He calculates that the construction of 10 additional artificial grass playing fields could be a solution for amateur football. The use of an artificial grass playing field can be four times greater than that of a natural grass field because the playability of the latter is weather dependent. In principle, you can always play and train on artificial grass. Most football clubs have at least one, sometimes two artificial playing fields, depending on the number of members. All kinds of innovations can then be applied, he explains further. Consider smarter maintenance of natural grass. He mentions the HiPSter as an example of this. The Hi Pitch Screener is a mobile measuring device that uses collected data to visualise the condition of the field, allowing maintenance to be improved and therefore playability. An Eindhoven

invention, how could it be otherwise, by the company Holland Innovative on the High Tech Campus. The Eredivisie CV speaks of a world first and makes the HipSter available to professional football clubs. There is now interest from abroad.

WA I T I N G L I S T S

Residents of Southeast Brabant are increasingly confronted with waiting lists. For a home,

INVESTMENTS On average, about 200 players use an artificial grass playing field at a club. An artificial grass field costs €700,000. Construction of 10 football fields - to eliminate the current waiting list - would therefore require an investment of €7m, to be depreciated over 10 years. A serious amount, the councilor realises. Annually, the Municipality spends a total of €24m on sports. Seven million of this is for policy and activities, and seventeen million for accommodation. The Councilor does not take an advance on the results of the needs assessment, which will result in an integrated housing plan. Building a new sports hall, for example, is a very significant expense, and he is already working on expectation management. “We will have to weigh up the investments in sports in relation to all the challenges in the city.”

AMBITIONS The Councilor indicates that there may also be a role for enterprising sports providers, such as the Climbing Hall in Eindhoven. He also calls on parents and adult sports enthusiasts, especially internationals, to volunteer for a club. This will help all associations and their members. “2,000 children on the waiting list is simply too many,” says Van Lanschot. The Municipality employs 16 sports directors who support the associations. They ensure a match between supply and demand in the field of sports and exercise in neighborhoods, schools, and sports providers. They also help find and retain volunteers. With the aim of a healthy and vital city. The developments in Eindhoven also offer opportunities, the Councilor concludes. “The knife can cut both ways. Get involved and offer yourself as a volunteer. That is good for the associations, it is a way to get to know new people, make new friends and expand your network.” 

Internationally, football is the most popular sport. In Eindhoven, 13 amateur clubs are active at eleven sports complexes spread across the city. Together they have about 40 natural grass playing fields and, according

Vulnerability is often associated with weakness, while there lies a connecting power in opening up about our deepest feelings and concerns. When I look at the world today, I see many people hiding behind a facade of strength. Unfortunately, people tend to avoid openly displaying their vulnerabilities and personal challenges, fearing weakness or loss of prestige. When I make myself vulnerable, I notice that others find it easier to do the same. Once a better relationship is established, walls come down quickly, and people become more comfortable with vulnerability. This cultivates courage and authenticity! Inclusive societies thrive in countries where openness is encouraged, such as in the Netherlands. Our Dutch society is represented by as many as 26 political parties! These countries are known for promoting openness about mental health, demonstrating that embracing human vulnerability doesn’t lead to weakness but to resilience. Openness leads to broader acceptance and understanding among people, both nationally and internationally. Can openness that connects individuals also work between countries? I believe it can. Nations that become more open about their challenges, concerns, and uncertainties can serve as a catalyst for better international cooperation. Instead of competing for perfection or displays of power, countries collaborate based on shared vulnerabilities and needs.

COLUMN JIN

More Vulnerability in 2024 In short, the path to stronger international cooperation begins with the willingness to show vulnerability. A country taking this step will realize that it not only strengthens the bonds among people within its borders but also opens new doors for a more open, honest, and effective global cooperation. My proposal for this new year is that we create more trust by sharing our vulnerabilities. In the world we build together, honesty, driven by understanding and unity, forms the bridge to a shared future. Will you join me?

Jin Chen Head of European China Desk / Partner transfer pricing Crowe Foederer Accountancy

Greater openness between countries might even lead to more empathy and understanding. Acknowledging each other’s weaknesses forms a common ground to find solutions for global challenges like climate change, health crises, and economic inequality. However, the path to more openness among nations requires a culture of trust and respect. It takes courage to expose vulnerabilities, especially on the world stage. Yet, this honesty could form a new form of diplomacy, based on understanding and empathy.

Storytiles unfold the story of culture in the metropoolregion

EDO RIGHINI IN CONVERSATION WITH THEO MAASSEN The main theme is, of course, the value of culture for us as individuals and for society, whether in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, or the rest of the world. As a comedian, creator, and interpreter of the arts, Theo Maassen has found his own style to make his voice heard and resonate with people. What else would be needed to make art and culture valuable for everyone? INITIATIVE, INTERVIEW: LIDY LATHOUWERS AND EDO RIGHINI | PHOTOGRAPHY: EDDIE MOL

15

I N D E P T H : S T O RY T I L E

Edo: ‘Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work. With this statement, Stephen King suggests that professional writers and artists don’t wait for inspiration; instead, they approach their work with discipline and perseverance.’ Theo: “With that explanation, I would be the amateur. It is, of course, important to separate the artist from the person, but they also go hand in hand. You walk your life’s path: fall in love, get into a steady relationship, break up. Then you meet someone else, have children with them. Your children grow up, there comes a time when a friend passes away. You have your life in which all sorts of things happen, causing you to mature. Almost like cheese: more moisture comes out, and the flavour gets stronger. My creative centre, my source from which I can create, is an empty agenda. Boredom, doing nothing, you shouldn’t be too busy. There needs to be days devoted to the hope that something will come. Like fishing, you watch the float and hope it goes under.” “Still, you actively seek out many people for your podcast, steering the meetings yourself. Why is that?” Theo: “I enjoy imparting knowledge and am continuously learning myself, always hungry for knowledge. Whether that inspires me for my programme is not so important. DJ Shadow said, ‘I am a teacher and I’m a student, too.’ That applies to me as well. I trained as a drama teacher and have gained a lot of experience, been through many things, and created numerous programmes. I create podcasts in the hope that someone, who listens and thinks, ‘Oh, but it is possible to do something with comedy or cabaret, or another talent, and break

‘If it’s right, if you resonate with it, you can pass it on’ through there.’ I’ve had wonderful conversations, for example, with Rob Lücker. He was a plumber and had a deep love for films. He wanted to do something with that passion and moved to Amsterdam to become a plumber there, thinking, ‘This way, I’ll be closer to film.’ Then he started volunteering in a cinema, and now he has won two Golden Calves. If it’s right, if you resonate with it, you can pass it on. For me, that happened when I entered the theatre. Earlier, there were so many places where I didn’t feel at home, be it at school or work. I was an outsider or unhappy due to the seemingly hopeless position I felt I was in the village. When I joined theatre school, I was still a bit of an oddball, but I thought: I can handle this here, this is where I belong. And my journey is not at all unique. All the people I speak to, it’s far from unique.” You graduated in ‘91 here in Eindhoven. What did the Academy mean to you? Theo: “I entered the programme and wasn’t really good at many things. Not in singing, not in dancing, but I excelled in improvisation. There was one crucial teacher, still one of my best friends and my director. When the programme wondered, ‘What should we do with that guy?’ he vouched for me. Important, there was one person who believed in me. At some point, it became natural that I would also do something professionally with it. A lot is offered to you. I met people who had good taste. I watched films that showed me a different world. And theatre, which I often found very boring until I saw a play that I loved: ‘Everything you wanted to do on stage, but never were allowed to,’ by two freshly graduated actors, Flemish and Dutch. My imagination of what is possible and what exists expanded. My universe became much larger.”

16

Do you mean, “Is it just too difficult, so I’m going my own way?” Theo: “Yes. That’s why art is so important: it’s also a territory, a land, for the nonconformists. For people who don’t quite fit the mould or aren’t able to conform, and they allow us to see reality in a different way, which is very enriching. For me, that’s the essence and the most crucial aspect of culture: encountering stories other than your own, your family’s, your friend group, or your country’s. They all provide different perspectives on reality, and you encounter them. It’s so liberating that this territory expands. We all come in a small package, but there’s so much more. I believe very much in mutual dependence. It creates a connection. That’s precisely why I love my form of cabaret. It’s a beautiful, applied art form that wants to eagerly communicate. There’s no fourth wall. I want to be understood. Confuse, but also be understood.” What role do artists play in mutual connection? “There are two directions you can take. You can try to show how good, clever, witty, or ingenious you are and emphasise that you are the only one who can do something, or you can strive for communication and understanding. I work with language. I create language, images, comparisons, or reasoning. I hope that they are original and that I can appeal to the imagination. I can come up with things that don’t yet exist. In my podcast, I interviewed singer-songwriter and comedian Peter van Rooijen. He received directing advice from one of the founders of Orkater, Hauser, to let a tone linger longer. Don’t say something immediately, don’t rush to the next thing, but let things land emotionally. I find that beautiful and important. A recurring theme in my shows is my ode to doubt. Maybe what you think isn’t true. Once, the opening line was: What if what you think isn’t true?” Has Eindhoven shaped you into who you are? Theo: “I think it has, but I haven’t lived anywhere else since I was twenty, so I don’t know. I am a huge PSV fan, but otherwise not overly enthusiastic about the city of Eindhoven. The city is really changing, undergoing a transformation. Take internationalisation, I think Eindhoven is doing that very well, and I’m very happy about it. I can imagine that some people miss the old Eindhoven, but I find it nice that we have gained a lot of Indian restaurants, and you hear a lot of English on the streets. Eindhoven is a down-to-earth city but has something rough about it. When it comes to imagination: imagination is more than saying, ‘it is what it is.’ It’s about more than what you see, what you feel, or putting in a bit more effort. In Eindhoven, that is often seen as pretentious. Just be normal; that’s crazy enough. But I also like Eindhoven. With my tour, I travel all over the Netherlands, including charming cities, but they often stay the same for twenty years. There is no city that changes as much as Eindhoven.”

You have the content, the carriers, and those who create beautiful things, and then you have a city. A bit like the frame of a beautiful painting. What could the city do to enhance or further develop the content of that beautiful painting? Theo: “Well, Eindhoven has long focused on design and technology to build an identity. Now might be a good time to look more broadly, highlight and give space to the rest of culture. We have great cultural venues like the Muziekcentrum, the Effenaar, the Parktheater, Natlab, Pand P. But I notice that even I bring down the average age at these locations. I think there is room for improvement there. I have just been to the Circus Treur Dier performance. It’s called BAAAAAA. One of the best things I’ve seen in the past ten years, in Pand P with forty people. Also, with Artemis from Den Bosch, there are forty people. I think many young people don’t know how cool they would find it.”

VA L U E O F C U LT U R E

It appears that you’ve been yourself from day one. Theo: “That’s more due to my inability to adapt than something I learned there. Ultimately, originality and authenticity always turn out to be the strength.”

‘Is that lamppost still standing here with the knot shaped like a heart? It’s fantastic, isn’t it?’ Imagine if there were no music or books, what would you do? How can you continue to invest? Theo: “Is that lamppost still here with the knot in the shape of a heart? It’s fantastic, isn’t it? Some things require a bit more attention. When people say things like, ‘Reading, I don’t have the patience for that,’ it becomes a lost battle; it has nothing to do with patience! Binge-watching works just fine too, and you need at least as much patience for that! It’s about being willing to make the effort to focus your attention on something. It does indeed require a bit more, but you also get much more in return. A good example where you see this is Woensel-West. The whole neighbourhood has been renovated and now has nice cafés, coffee shops, and stores. That’s also culture. It would be nice if a small theatre could be added there.” If you were in charge in Eindhoven, what would you change or add? Theo: “I would make it all more visible and accessible. People should be able to easily see what’s happening in the city. Present, now, tonight! Not posters of what will be happening in six months. The visibility and clarity about cultural events needs to increase. I would promote exposure to culture. People should have the opportunity to encounter various forms of art and culture. It’s about showing people that culture is not just entertainment but something that can broaden their horizons. 

STORYTILES Storytiles is a initiative by Edo Rhigini and Lidy Lathouwers, who unfold the story of culture in the Metropoolregio Eindhoven to life. We believe in the power of art & culture and we aim to understand and appreciate the natural drive behind it. With Storytiles we explore the heartbeat and impact of culture, providing a platform for conversations and encounters.

They will function as puzzle pieces that together will expose the value and meaning of culture. We meet relevant culture-makers, stakeholders, and experts to understand how culture affects us and what value it holds from various perspectives. FOR N TRANSFORMATIO

In 1973, Franz Xaver Kroetz writes a unique play in which no words are spoken: ‘Wunschkonzert.’ A woman comes home from work, watches the news, and listens to ‘Wunschkonzert,’ a radio program featuring requested songs. What seems like an ordinary evening takes an unexpected turn. Exactly fifty years later, Jessie L’Herminez stages an evocative, absurdly hilarious version depicting the evening rituals of a woman in 1973 and a woman in 2023: while one loses herself in weaving a tapestry, the other delves into a self-help podcast about ‘creative solitude.’ ‘Verzoeknummer’ is a tribute to all the lonely women who, despite everything, continue to smile.

Mamma Mia!

JELENA KOSTIC We all feel like losers at times. When we miss an opportunity, when the grass seems greener on the other side, or when we get overtaken just before the finish line.

The hit musical Mamma Mia! is perhaps the most popular musical of the past twenty years. In 2024, this brand-new version of the international ABBA musical sensation can be seen in the Parktheater.

These are moments when we might feel like sinking through the ground, but hopefully, moments we can look back on with a smile later on. In ‘Losers,’ choreographer Jelena Kostić explores various aspects of ‘losing’: shame, (self)pity, sadness, and the necessity to put our rough moments into perspective and transform them. Using humor as a weapon, Jelena creates a dance performance that captures the feeling of losing in a versatile theatrical movement language.

Roy Beusker

In Mamma Mia!, we see how Sophie (Soraya Gerrits) is about to get married on a sunny Greek island. She would like to be given away by her father, but who is he anyway? Sophie’s quest finds her free-spirited mother Donna (Brigitte Heitzer) suddenly confronted with her wild past and three of her former loves... Mamma Mia! is a celebration of ABBA’s greatest hits performed in the original English version. Prepare for a story full of romance, nostalgia and fantastic humor!

Kraaij & Kroon

HET ZUIDELIJK TONEEL STICHTING NIEUWE HELDEN

Johnny Kraaijkamp and Soy Kroon not only share their personal stories in this comic performance, but also put themselves in the shoes of many others.

What if we truly listened to children? Despite being a wealthy country, the Netherlands faces significant poverty and inequality. We talk about it and take various actions, yet nothing seems to change. This time, we’re flipping the script. On stage, there’s a fantastic set and an 11-year-old child who takes you on a modern fairy tale journey. Be prepared to be surprised, moved, enchanted, and amazed, and just maybe, to believe, even if only for a moment, that fairy tales do exist.

Sofie Knijff

Annemieke van der Toggt

Through hilarious skits, they shed a comic light on a number of unavoidable modern-day themes. For example, what are you still allowed to say today? And how can you not be forgotten when you’re gone? Kraaij & Kroon are searching for answers to these questions. According to them, one thing is clear: there can be... no, there must be laughter.

JACCO VAN DER NET (L) AND JAN GROENEN

CAMINO BRABANT IS ATTRACTING MORE AND MORE PILGRIMS

‘Den Bosch is the Santiago of Brabant’ Veldhoven resident Jan Groenen, himself an avid walker, is the architect behind Camino Brabant. He walked along the coastline of Portugal to Spain, the pilgrimage route to antiago, with friends at the end of 2020. He wondered why such a tour did not exist closer to home. Why not create a ‘Santiago effect’ in Brabant? This is how it happened. After he sold his IT company, Jan decided to focus on developing a Brabant pilgrimage route, a wish that had been on his bucket list for some time. TEXT: MONIQUE VAN ESCH | PHOTOGRAPHY: EDDIE MOL

24

A COMPETITION OF ENJOYMENT Jan is happy when he talks about his walks. He doesn’t see the Camino Brabant as a competition, as it is sometimes perceived. “At most, a competition of enjoyment”, he notes. “The Brabant countryside has so much beauty to offer. It is possible that a kingfisher suddenly flies past.” Or the cycle route charter reads: Onderwége zulde veul schôn dinger gezien hebbe, veul schaope, misschien un wild perd, veel knèn en ook wa schôn veugelkes en dikke koej in de waâi. (Brabant dialect)

ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL “St. John’s Cathedral in Den Bosch is the main attraction for Brabant people on the pilgrim route and also a general starting and ending point,” says Jan. “A wonderful cathedral with built-in Lady Chapel that attracts many visitors every year. Den Bosch is actually the Santiago of Brabant.” Lady Chapels, prominent in Brabant, have a

certain appeal to many people and are very valuable for several reasons, Jan knows. About 60 chapels are included on the Camino Brabant route. Jan himself is still regularly surprised and discovers new things. “Take the hamlet of Hooidonk near Son en Breugel for example. There I have recently discovered another beautiful chapel. Sitting at the watermill there, an older man pointed this out to me.”

(Brabant dialect) 

ogether with friends Jacco van der Net and Marco Paulussen, the routes were plotted step by step. First online and then putting the routes into practice, mainly looking at beautiful locations in each municipality. Afterwards, the routes were all walked several times and improved as they went. Cycle routes were added in mid-2023, with certain parts being amended. A digital GPX file, that pilgrims can access and display on their mobile phones, has been created for each route. “In July 2021 I sat with the notary to effect the transfer of my company and took the opportunity to establish our Camino Brabant foundation”, says Jan. There was a lot involved in setting up such a route. From a website to rubber stamps, from stickers to signs, from 180kg concrete posts to certificates, to name a few. All in addition to creating information and communication from and about the route. To ensure everything runs smoothly, a route manager has been appointed for each route which helps to improve and adapt the route and to answer questions from pilgrims. Jan: “We regularly receive comments from participants for example, a road diversion or closed bridge. So those kinds of changes will be made, and it is good that we are made aware of this.”

a great challenge,” Jan concludes. But as befits a true pilgrim, perseverance wins; words that can be read on the certificate:

RUBBER STAMPS It used to be quite normal in our country to provide rubber stamps on all kinds of documents. Nowadays things are different. Jan: “Rubber stamps are still quite common in southern countries and to preserve the authentic character of the pilgrimage, we also had stamps made for all the Camino Brabant routes. A unique stamp has been made for each chapel or church.”

More than 2,000 people have now registered online as Camino Brabant pilgrims More than 2,000 people have now registered online as Camino Brabant pilgrims. Brabant and word is spreading fast. For €19.95, people get a walking package, containing a pin or emblem, stamp booklet, route map and so on and, on completion, a certificate. Donations will continue to be important to ensure the foundation’s continued existence. Collecting subsidies and convincing very large companies to provide sponsorship is a longterm thing. More and more people are being called upon to act as sponsors.

PILGRIM According to the dictionary, a pilgrim (from the Latin peregrinus) is a traveller on a journey to a place of religious significance. The most famous pilgrimages are of course those to the sites at Lourdes and Santiago de Compostella. However, since 2021, as a walker and cyclist, you do not have to travel so far to still have beautiful countryside and religious buildings on your route thanks to the Camino Brabant (‘camino’ means path in Spanish and ‘bon camino’ is how pilgrims greet each other along the way). This is a walking and cycling tour with a total of thirteen routes of more than 300 km through the beautiful Brabant landscape past Den Bosch, Eindhoven, Tilburg, and Breda. The route was officially opened by the Mayor of Den Bosch in March 2022. The logo features a scallop shell and the Brabant colours (red and white), a derivative of the Santiago de Compostella logo.

For more information: www.caminobrabant.nl

MOBILE APP A lot has been achieved in just a few years and there are still plenty of ideas such as developing our own Camino Brabant coin for candles. One big wish that Jan hopes to realise soon is a mobile app. It costs about €40,000 and the foundation has not yet managed to raise that amount of money. “An app where you can find everything about Camino Brabant, which you can always have at hand and where you can report directly via your mobile phone. That will be the next ‘pilgrim step’ and

Hannah Bakker (Housing Director) “As a Housing Development Director, I am the connection between developers in the city and the Municipality. I have a varied job in which I work a lot with housing associations and project developers in our city. Together we work on the housing challenge in the city.”

Why did you start working for the Eindhoven Municipality? “After several years as a project developer, I wanted to broaden my view. I wanted to think more and contribute to a living and developing vision. Working in and around Eindhoven appealed to me. The city represents a leap in scale, everything is happening aimed at the future and it is the city where I feel at home!” What does an average day look like for you? “Preferably very dynamic. Example: I start answering my emails at home and complete a file. Then I hop on my bike to Woonbedrijf for a meeting with the housing associations about potential new development locations. Then I go to the city office and discuss with

a colleague the design for the acceleration table with developers in the city. I eat a sandwich in the canteen. In the afternoon I will meet the builder of an innovative construction system with which homes can be built quickly. I end the afternoon with an appointment at City Hall with the Councilors and the Director of one of the corporations.” How do you see your future (within the Municipality)? “The Municipality is a large organization with big tasks. This means that there are many career opportunities and interesting matters ‘that you can sink your teeth into’. I hope to continue to work in the coming years to make pleasant and affordable living possible in the scale increase in Eindhoven.”

“As a WMO specialist, I determine whether a resident is entitled to further support. Together with the resident, I look for appropriate care. As a WMO specialist, my extensive experience in healthcare comes in handy. I can often better empathise with a situation and jointly determine what support is needed.”

What projects are you working on? “We are currently working hard to organise all work processes even better, to better support residents with their requests for help.” What does an average day look like for you? I work on different cases every day. The questions are always very varied; sometimes easy to arrange and sometimes with a more complex situation and request for help. I often need to make contact with everyone involved, for example care providers. Helping residents get started gives me satisfaction every day!” How do you see your future (within the Municipality)? Now I am in a good place within the Municipality. My work and private life are well balanced and there is plenty of room for personal development. And I like that I have a role in which I serve society. EINDHOVEN, WORK THAT YOU STAND FOR

Perceptiën Fluorescent XL

Een Eigenzinnige Kracht in de Opstand van de Kunstwereld

WERNER KLOMPEN

MADODO

In general, the opinion is that black light only makes white colours stand out. In fact, this light accentuates all fluorescent colours and materials as well. Another trait of fluorescent paint is that it creates a sensational effect of depth. If you add shapes and objects, you get a surreal landscape where you can give free reign to your imagination.

In a world that sometimes seems obsessed with perfection and polished aesthetics, Madodo’s art serves as a rebellion against the idea that art must conform to a rigid standard.

Werner Klompen, born in Roggel, Limburg, has been working with black light for more than 30 years. While he initially worked exclusively with paint on flat surfaces, over time his arsenal has expanded and he now also creates work with 3D pens. With utmost patience he builds up layer by layer to create these uniquely bizarre landscapes. The whimsical, fascinating images evoke associations with creatures from the deep sea or fungal networks or a host of other possible interpretations. This window exhibition can be viewed for free from the street. The effect of black light is only really visible when it is dark outside!

Canvases, filled with whimsical figures, speak directly to the inner child in each viewer and remind us of the unfiltered creativity that resides within all of us. Inspired by street art, full of vibrant color collages and imaginative scenes. Madodo’s work rejects conventional norms and invites viewers to rediscover the joy of creation. It reminds everyone of the fun of using their imagination. It is the art of the people. Nigerian-born Mado RE: Agenda Totaal do wants to work extra large in the T56 project space. Not only with large drawings and paintings, but also with objects and clothing. His exploration with a unique blend of vibrant colors, imaginative scenes and childlike innocence embraces chaos to rediscover the joy of creation.

INNOVATION

PHARMI MAKES MEDSWISE

Digital medication guidance where possible, human when necessary Incorrect use of medication - storing or taking it incorrectly, skipping doses, combining it with food - can cause serious (and even fatal) health problems, as is evident from almost 50,000 hospital admissions per year in the Netherlands. Pharmacist and CEO Claudia Rijcken and her team from startup Pharmi answer this question from the High-Tech Campus Eindhoven.

C

laudia explored her entire field before becoming an entrepreneur. During and after her studies and PhD, she worked as a pharmacist and then in the pharmaceutical industry. She therefore speaks from experience: “If pharmacists want to offer patients good care and careful information now and, in the future, data, digital interaction and communication and a human touch are necessary. Data, trends and patterns in medicine use and how pharmacists can optimise this have always been of interest to me. That can be done much smarter. I felt that - in general - pharmacists knew too little about digital care, were not sufficiently prepared for it and that there are few tools to support and educate them. That is why I wrote the book Pharmaceutical Care in Digital Revolution, the second edition of which was published this year; ‘this is coming your way’.”

STARTUP She started Pharmi in 2019: “The ambition is to ensure that pharmacists are ready for the hybrid future: digital where possible, human when necessary. Tests with a digital platform for remote care proved successful and with financing from Rabobank we continued to develop the concept in 2020. Investors latched on to that. Our own platform now runs in 65 pharmacies and in pharmaceutical home care. About 25,000 patients now use MedsWise.” This interactive and accessible digital guidance is special, Claudia agrees: “Especially because MedsWise informs and communicates with the patient about all medicines. There are certainly good medication management platforms worldwide, but usually in one area, such as diabetes or asthma. Our platform really provides a supplement to the pharmacist for all medications.” Integration into the standard Pharmacy Information System is now possible for hundreds of pharmacists, so that pharmacy teams can use MedsWise easily.

HYBRID Pharmi has the time. There is a shortage of staff and all parties in the Integrated Care Agreement aim for 50% adoption of hybrid care in two years. “All macro tendencies and trends point in that direction; We have too few hands and therefore have to use other care solutions.” Data is also relevant for demonstrating the value of healthcare innovations: “For example, in the reimbursement of new 36

medicines. Developers must demonstrate that products do what they promise in clinical trials, and this is increasingly done digitally.” This digitalization brings its own challenges. Teammate and commercial lead Roos van der Bent: “There is so much demand for software developers in this knowledge field. It often takes a while before we can fill our vacancies. This applies to more ‘little ones’ on the Campus, between the VDLs and ASMLs here. But we do have the best team.”

‘The pressure on a startup in the difficult healthcare industry is intense’ Yet it is also hard work for the current eight-person team, Claudia comments: “The pressure on a startup in the difficult healthcare industry is intense. That requires patience and firm objectives. Change is only interesting if it represents improvement and healthcare professionals do not always see that. The costs outweigh the benefits. There is more understanding for the need for digitalisation to provide the necessary care. But financing is not yet in order; new financing models must be introduced. Moreover, implementation of healthcare innovation requires additional capacity, which is often not available. Educational opportunities for a better understanding of hybrid care among pharmacy teams are limited. We still must overcome those hurdles.” That is no easy task, Claudia sighs: “I am also a teacher of digital pharmaceutical care for pharmacists. There is still little knowledge shared about hybrid care models in the pharmacy and in assistant training. This needs to change urgently to keep healthcare sustainable in the future.”

PATIENT FRIENDLY Then there is the patient aspect; hybrid care and digitalization must also be patient-oriented and -to be kind. Roos is brief about it: “That is MedsWise”. The app has been tested at language level B1 and offers interactive com-

munication, virtual assistance, and chat, plus a mix of short texts, film, images and animation. Claudia gives an example: “MedsWise asks the user how things are going and about the quality of life. MedsWise guides you during the first two weeks to better understand the medicine. It ensures prevention by identifying risks. For example, during reduction programmes for heavy painkillers, there is hybrid home guidance, combined with care from the pharmacist. We also measure patient satisfaction. MedsWise generally scores ‘good’, a score of 7.5. And we have seen for several years that knowledge of medicines - which predicts proper use of the medication - is increasing considerably. With digital guidance, people feel more comfortable with their knowledge of medicines and are less concerned about correct use and side effects. This promotes self-management and self-direction. And it also helps society; fewer unnecessary hospital admissions when people use their medications better. The accessibility of healthcare is under pressure. Migration to hybrid and digital provides immediate benefits for patients.”

VALUE This is widely appreciated, and not only by the growing numbers of pharmacists and patients who use MedsWise. There is international interest in the app: “A positive pilot has now been completed in Belgium and Germany is interested; the access climate there is really quite complex.” Pharmi has already made the top ten of the STZ Innovation Award, Rabobank Sustainable Innovation Award and National Healthcare Innovation Award, won the well-known Brainport Prize Gerard & Anton Award and the NL Academic Startup Award. In 2023, Pharmi belonged to the MT/Sprout Challenger50, the fifty most challenging, innovative, and fast-growing companies in the Netherlands. These entrepreneurs break with existing business models and show the established order how things can be done differently, faster, and better. n

A few weeks ago, I participated in ‘Burst your bubble,’ an event aimed at connecting locals and internationals in 7 steps. When entering the venue bubbles were floating in the air. Some tried to dodge the bubbles, while others attempted to pop them, walking straight through or even hopping over them. A cheerful warmup quickly showed us that our first impressions of others were often far from accurate. After this, the real work began. In groups of 6 or 7 people - locals labeled blue, internationals labeled red - we found our place in the space. We were given the task to take turns asking each other a set of questions listed on our cards. On the condition to genuinely listen during the task, refraining from giving advice or opinions, and, most importantly, avoiding judgment. My group consisted of 2 Turkish, 1 Hungarian, and 2 Dutch participants. During the first round of questions, the task of listening seemed achievable, but refraining from giving advice or opinions proved to be quite challenging. Withholding judgment seemed possible, but, to be honest, I had already formed judgments in my mind. Gradually, it became possible to truly just listen, intervening when advice or opinions were about to surface. It turned into a special evening. Without ever having seen each other before, a sense of trust, understanding, and respect emerged. The most beautiful moment for me was how everyone dealt with the question about their worries. There was a very long silence

C O L U M N M AT H I L D E

Burst that bubble!

from one of the participants. Sometimes, silence can feel uncomfortable, but now it seemed like a sincere and collective silence, demonstrating that, whatever the concern was, we were ready to support each other in sharing it. The very last task was to give a personal encouragement to the person sitting on your left, armed with all the newfound knowledge about each other. It became evident that we had truly listened to one another; I was genuinely moved by the support I felt. We ended as a group, collectively popping a blue and a red balloon, and cards with messages drifted down as mementos of a special evening. We had succeeded; we had burst the bubble together. Why did this work so well? Was it the structure and the rules? The visualization? Loose but also tight? The closeness of the circle? Recognition? The fun? In reality, it was all of these. But was it for everyone? In a way, the group present was its own bubble; composed of participants confident enough for a new adventure and proficient in English. How wonderful would it be to make this initiative possible for everyone? As a community in Eindhoven, we need to seriously consider this. After all, everyone matters, right? What we can at least try whether you’re a local, international, labor migrant, or refugee - is to see the other, listen to them, and keep your judgment to yourself. And start small. Talk to your neighbors and colleagues, invite them, also after working hours, help each other in a store, greet each other on the street and in the park, have a chat, and be curious. It’s time to start bursting bubbles!

‘Making it more sustainable is necessary and it offers opportunities’

THESE SUSTAINABLE FRONTRUNNERS CAME BEFORE YOU When it comes to sustainability, there is still plenty to gain. Yet more and more entrepreneurs are taking action. There are already several sustainable leaders in the Brainport region. We have highlighted five of these in recent months. For example, PeelPioneers, a company that transforms orange peel into valuable ingredients for food, cosmetics, or cleaning products. Or Arte Groep, where sustainable worktops are made, free of child labour..

Cootjans, Director of Co-operative Rabobank.

‘The train towards a sustainable economy is moving. As an entrepreneur you cannot lag behind’

still has to move. There are still major players who hardly invest in sustainability.” Cootjans sees a role for Rabobank there. “We are more than a lender. It is also our job to motivate companies to join this sustainable transition. For example, by taking on a connecting role and encouraging collaborations. We can then share the knowledge gained within such a group to inspire others. It is not without reason that we regularly organise knowledge and inspiration sessions.”

Sustainability is high on the agenda everywhere in the Netherlands. This is also the case with Cootjans. “The train towards a sustainable economy is moving. As an entrepreneur you cannot lag behind. You have to get involved to remain attractive to customers, employees and suppliers.” Yet he certainly sees sustainable entrepreneurship not only as necessary, but also as promising. “There are many advantages: you do business in a future-proof manner, your competitive position improves, and you are attractive to new staff in an already tight labour market. Nowadays, for many people, their employer or their own company must have a purpose. I only applaud that. It is very encouraging that so many entrepreneurs are working on improving the world.” THERE’S WORK TO BE DONE In Brainport Eindhoven, this group of frontrunners is relatively large, according to research by RaboResearch. “The many start-ups and scale-ups are not only a growth engine for the economy and employment. With their innovations they also contribute to social issues, for example in the field of sustainability. These are then also produced here. Innovation, sustainable entrepreneurship, and the high-tech manufacturing industry come together very nicely in our region.” Yet according to him, there is also work to be done. “The big peloton

And we also regularly use our network: we bring entrepreneurs and other parties together if this accelerates the step towards a sustainable economy.” 

FOCUS

Ineke Hurkmans is a central figure in Eindhoven’s cultural - and not only - life. With her contagious smile and explosive energy, she’s a true leader who collects prizes, holds meetings, helps the growth of the local community, and occasionally selects excellent music as a DJ. Her Jump Movement format - based on a simple and brilliant idea - has created a true revolution with a scalable method for conversation that creates movement and connectedness in organizations and groups. N

owadays, Jump Movement is active in 14 countries and has reached over 700.000 participants. Another company Ineke founded is IamNL (www.iamnl. nu), a startup for refugees in the Netherlands, where, from 2017 to 2020, they worked on language skills, applicable job skills, mindset, and chances at the job market. Today, you are one of the absolute protagonists of Eindhoven’s life. When did you arrive in the city? “I was born in Lierop and grew up in Milheeze. Before moving to my beloved Eindhoven, I lived in Asten. I arrived more than 30 years ago and got a job as a project leader at Dynamo. I was a single mum; I wanted to live close to my daughter, so I moved. I struggled to settle in for the first ten years because I stayed in a so-called ‘woongroep’ in the city, kind of a bubble of our own. Then, something happened inside me when Philips moved outside of Eindhoven. It was like a hole; all cultural and social life was so closely linked to Philips that it was a deep wound for the city. That was the moment something inside me moved. The transformation was in the air. With my office, I moved to Strijp S, and my heart opened completely. 17 years ago, I felt it was my economic home base, and it still is. Ten years ago, with my husband, we went to live there too. I love the people who live in Strijp S; the creative force in the air fuels me today, like yesterday. It reminds me of the small towns where I grew up; it recharges me to live there.” How was the Jump Movement born? “It was during a very frustrating phase in my professional life as a consultant. The work I did was just a number on the agenda; I never felt I was contributing to something sustainable. I wanted to create a space, a structure where people could find their answers. So I started a session with six friends, and it was blowing away: to share and to listen. With one page of script and different sessions, we reached 1000 people in 4 months; this was an evident potential success. The strongest reason was that I saw how powerful it was to have a self-organizing system. It’s not us. It’s the script. It’s my gift to the world and is

It is essential in the form and philosophy. Jumping is very easy; people can jump when they feel safe and relaxed.” In addition, you have initiated new concepts for organization management teams and individuals as interventions to become more focused and balanced. “We have created several organizational development concepts: The engaged teams program, intervision systems, cultural change programs, etcetera. I also work with the concept of Open Space Technology, where large groups gather around a very complex problem or challenge. It is also a self-organising program. For individuals, we created several programs: personal leadership programs in our Jump Movement Academy (www.jumpmovementacademy.com launched 16 December 2023) and Walking the Labyrinth.”

What makes me curious is your philosophy about Not Doing? What is it? “Actually, it is about the art of sitting on your hands. Creating space for others by not advising, not directing, and not initiating too much for others, especially when they don’t ask for it, makes that happen. When you look at 3 standpoints, the Doing, The Not Doing, and the Doing Noting, it’s the middle standpoint. When we work from the Not Doing (or sitting on your hands standpoint), connection to people and what is happening is 100%, but action is open for the other. For example, in a team, the manager often directs, knows, and initiates, and the team members wait. They wait for approval, for instructions, for assignments. I talk to managers and hear their frustration about this. When they learn how to sit on their hands (i.e., Not Doing), they feel more space for their team to start moving from their own motivation. It always feels uncomfortable to

JUMP MOVE MENT

People can ‘jump’, when they feel safe and relaxed

start practicing this because it’s a complete other approach. But millimeter by millimeter, it starts working. I love working with leaders on this! Or with moms and dads… because they are also leaders. I’m writing a book called ’Not Doing, achieve more, by doing less.” What is your secret to finding all this energy? “Everything I do now is based in Eindhoven, where it is possible to create connections, acknowledge themself, and make the magic.

’In Eindhoven it is possible to create connections, acknowledge themself, and make the magic.’

I only am asked to contribute by invitation. If I am invited for my talent and personality, I can give myself completely, and I don’t have ‘sell it,’ in a different way, I can align my energy to someone else and be totally myself.” What do you do to reflect, when, and how often? “Every day at 7.30 AM, I am online to reflect with a group of people. We use the Jump Movement conversation methodology because it is fast, direct, and effective. It’s my second wake-up every morning, giving me a clear head and heart to start the day. Besides that, I often work with personal coaches and attend trainings to learn from experimenting and reflecting in new ways. I love yoga, camping, and being in nature with my husband. Spiritually, I have been on a path from the age of 23 (now I am 61), which has become a stable aspect of my life. I know I have a deep connection with what is around

me, I know I always can trust on the universe when I’m looking for answers. I have a deep trust that all that is happening is for a reason, and I believe that all that is happening is the only thing that could happen. Because if it had to happen differently, it would have. Resisting the reality of the day makes me be in a fight or flight mode. Accepting and connecting to it helps me feel and see more possibilities. I love to be challenged. My believe is that I have one life and that I want to live it fully. I meditate and spend time in nature. Both help me to quit my mind, creating space to receive the answers that I need.” 

Gezana in Eritrean means ‘home’. The feeling of being at home you get right from the start when entering the restaurant located at the Willemstraat in Eindhoven. What a warm welcome of one of the

When asking if it’s not difficult to run a restaurant with your family members they all smile. “In Eritrea this is very common! As long as we divide the tasks, all will go well”. Meseret is the host of the restaurant, but also takes care of work behind the scenes. Selam is the chef, she prepares the most tasty and spiced dishes. She does this together with her sister Nazareth.,who loves to be in the kitchen but also welcomes guests with a big smile too.

family members. Gezana is a true family company where Meseret, Nazareth and Selam are in charge.

Selam welcomed me right from the start with a delightful, scented coffee ritual. She roasts her own coffee beans and you can experience the whole coffee brewing process from close-by. By tasting the coffee, it instantly hits your taste buds in a pleasant way, especially because of the pleasant hint of ginger within the coffee. This ritual is a moment of coming together. “This is how we start our days, but usually we do drink our coffee a bit faster! As we also need to get to work and start cooking”, Nazareth explains.

CULINARY ARTS

At Gezana Eritrean Restaurant you feel right at home!

And they can cook! When you go out for a dinner at Gezana Eritrean Restaurant you will be surprised by original and tasty dishes served with injera; fluffy sourdough pancakes. De dishes have a pleasant spiciness to them using authentic herbs like in Eritrea and Ethiopia. On the menu also some nice milder dishes can be found, and you will be spoiled with all kinds of vegetable, meat and fish dishes to choose from. ‘Fingerlickinggood’ is the milder okra and spinach dishes next to the spicy steak, which you can make at home yourself with the recipe on this page! On the question if a child menu is available, it’s s a clear, no! But you eat the dishes with your hands, which kids certainly will enjoy. Because of this you will witness first the ritual of washing your hands on the table before dinner too. At Gezana it’s not only about delightful food, but you also step into a ‘home’ where you will be immersed into the Eritrean culture. This experience also connects people, “that’s something that makes us very proud!’’

Gored-Gored • Slice 200 grams of beef steak into substantial strips (blocks) • Use 2 tablespoons of artisanal unsalted butter (Tesmi) • Add 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepperpowder. • Include 1/2 tablespoon of ground black cardamom

Recipe

In a frying pan, combine the butter, cayenne pepper, and ground black cardamom. Once it’s warm, add the meat. Stir a bit and cook to your desired taste.
