CAMPING ETIQUETTE Camping is a time to get back to nature, spend time with family and friends, and just plain old relax. Sometimes when enjoying holidays our brains can tune out common sense and our behaviour changes. Camping Etiquette is all about remembering to camp respectfully. HERE ARE A FEW HELPFUL REMINDERS AND TIPS ON HOW WE CAN ALL ENJOY OUR CAMPING EXPERIENCE FOR YEARS TO COME: • Respect fire bans. You can check out if fires are allowed by visiting the BC Wildfire Service website, some private campgrounds may not allow propane fires, so please check at the office when registering at your campground. • Buy firewood locally to avoid transporting foreign species or disease into the area. Often firewood is sold at campgrounds, local stores and gas stations. Do not cut down trees. • Build fires only in designated fire rings. If there are no designations make sure the area is clear of debris, rotting wood, and far enough away from the trees, and build a fire ring with two rows of rocks. • Remember to extinguish your campfires. Never leave your coals smoking or smoldering. The fire is out if you are able to place a corner piece of tissue on it and it does not ignite. • Remove all garbage. If you pack it in, pack it out. Campgrounds usually have great garbage bins for 12

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

campers that animals can’t get in to. If there are no garbage cans, take the garbage with you. Never burn your garbage as trace amounts of garbage can bring unwanted visitors such as bears, raccoons, mice etc. even after it has been charred by fire. • Recycle! Many campgrounds now have recycling bins. Remember to wash out all containers and dispose in the designated bin. • Read the campground rules. Make sure you respect each individual campground’s rules. You can generally find these rules on a sign at the campground or on their website. You can also ask when you reserve your spot or pick up a copy when you register. • Ask about quiet hours. In campgrounds this is pretty important because you are all sharing your camping experiences with each other- often in tight areas. Remember that voices carry at campsites and try to keep voices down inside of quiet times.

• Pick up after your dog. If the campground allows pets make sure you bring plenty of dog waste bags and keep your pet on a leash at all times. Always check with the campground first to see if animals are permitted. • Observe posted speed limits. Children feel liberated while camping. They will ride bikes, race to playgrounds, and skip hand in hand down paths. Make sure you watch for all campground pedestrians and drive SLOWLY. • Be respectful to campground staff. Staff have been trained to make your vacation enjoyable and they are a great resource for helpful information and tips. Please be patient at check-in and out times as this is often the busiest time for them. • Be neighbourly. Respect your neighbours by not cutting through their campsites. If you are arriving early or leaving late, please turn down your high beams and radio.

Samuel de Chaplain Provincial Park

Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park on a misty morning, fishing on the north side of the lake.

DAVID WHELAN/FLICKR

BY WILLIAM ENNIS

When, in the early 1600’s, Samuel de Champlain explored his way north on the Ottawa River, and turning aside on the Mattawa River, he was discovering and mapping the relatively unknown land of Canada. As he made his way along fast running rapids edged by cliffs and forest he certainly could never have dreamed that some day, there would be a park named after him. He probably considered it a fairly uninhabitable land, good perhaps for trapping, but little else. Move ahead 400 years or so, and hundreds of Canadians have enjoyed great vacations at the Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park. This 2500 hectare wilderness park is located on the shores of the Mattawa River. This river was part of the fur trade route and has seen its share of heavily-laden freight canoes heading downstream, and also hardworking men taking those same canoes back upstream. It also has the ghosts of other explorers, part of our history. La Verendrye, David Thompson, Radisson, and Alexander Mackenzie, made their presence known to many of us through our public school books. The Mattawa River is designated as a Canadian Heritage River. We must remember that the Aboriginal Peoples used this route for their own travel, dating back at least 6,000 years, as shown by several archaeological sites.

WILLIAM ENNIS

It’s partly the history that brings visitors to the park, but for a large part it’s the rugged terrain, and the activities offered by the park. Its location, three or four hours from Toronto and Ottawa means that it’s not as crowded by weekenders as are the more southern parks. It is well used by those who come to stay and enjoy nature. The park is located just off Hwy-17, the Trans-Canada Route, just between North Bay and Mattawa. The drive through the typical Canadian Shield scenery, consisting of hills, streams, and forests, will have prepared you for what you will enjoy close-up at the park. The Babawasse CG has electrical hookups at all of its 74 sites. A central facility building has showers, flush toilets, and facilities for laundry. The Jingwakoki CG, situated among the pine trees, has 147 campsites, with electricity for 20 of them and it too has a facility building with toilets and showers. There is a sandy beach on the shore of Moore Lake that will attract the youngsters on warm days. Jingwakoki means ‘pine forest’ in Ojibway tongue. Once you are set up in camp there is the difficult decision about whether to just vegetate in a lounge chair, or partake in the many offerings that this park provides. With two rivers in the park, it might be the time enjoy canoeing. Children might like to try some rafting or tubing on the Amable du Frond River, which is calm in many places, and others with rapids. The Mattawa River is a wider, deep river often 18

flowing along the base of steep cliffs, and edged by dark forests. A canoe ride on Long Lake, no motors allowed, offers you solitude along the base of steep cliffs. For those who want to bring home supper, you might try fishing on Moore Lake where you could hook on to wild fighting, never give up, small-mouth bass. If you don’t feel like water sports, there are several hiking trails to choose from. Trail guides are found at the Visitor Centre. The Kag Trail is a route that has some steep climbs over its 2.5 km loop and passes through some stunning red pine forests, passing by Gem Lake.

The Etienne system has four loops ranging from 2.5 km to 9 km and is considered very difficult but there is compensation with the scenic views of the Mattawa River. The Red Pine loop has observation platforms with good views of the Mattawa River. The Forestry Research trail is a fairly easy two km loop through areas where forest research is being carried out. Another easy trail, the Wabashkiki, is about one km long and winds to a marsh with a boardwalk on a piece of land projecting out into the Moore Lake. The marsh observation platform is a good place to see some of the 200

bird species known to be in the park. The Mattawa River Visitor’s Centre has some great displays of canoes, and illustrates the natural and cultural history of the area. Note the vast and varied goods carried in the big canoes. See how the privileged are carried by the men so as to not get their feet wet, nor have to walk on the tough portages. Learn about how Champlain made his maps and about the contributions he made to befriend the local Aboriginal Peoples, and to help them in their fight against the Iroquois. Feel the texture of the furs that are on display. Is it any wonder there was a vast market for them? During July and August try your hand in paddling the Park’s replica Fur Trade Canoe. Get the sensation of what it would have been like travelling in a Voyageur Canoe. Also in the park is the Canadian Ecology Centre, which is primarily an education and research centre. It offers courses on history,

biology, forest management and mining to the public. If you lack camping apparatus, there are cabins for rent. You can also rent conference rooms for meetings or even weddings. A very historic waterfall, the Talon Chute, lies just upstream of the park on the Mattawa River. While it and the gorge could be spectacular, the area is dangerous and several have lost their lives. It’s not a place for foolish behaviour. Champlain was a tireless explorer. He proceeded up the Ottawa River to Lake Nipissing, entered the French River to arrive at Lake Huron. The Huron Indians took him through the area of present day Peterborough. He was

one of Canada’s great explorers, and the park is well named. If you need supplies, you are only a few minutes from the Town of Mattawa, which also has good dining facilities. If you have some extra time, explore nearby attractions such as the Eau Claire Gorge Conservation Area, the Voyageur Multi Use Trail System, and the Museums and Art Galleries. The Ontario northland’s character comes from its location on the Canadian Shield. Your enjoyment will come from the endless forest, hills and lakes, all of which provide hours of inspiring scenery and a lifetime of memories.

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

Located in the middle of Vancouver Island on the eastern shoreline, is a little oasis known as Comox. The mild climate, laid back atmosphere, healthy eating, and waterfront activities are all what made this our summer holiday destination. Comox is three and a half hours from the metropolitan city of Vancouver. This includes a scenic one hour and forty minute cruise from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, crossing the Strait of Georgia on BC Ferries. The Royal Canadian Force Base (CFB ) Comox opened in 1942, and has been a major employer for the region. The 10,000 foot airstrip is shared with Comox Valley Airport (YQQ) with commercial aircraft for daily flight service from Vancouver Island, Vancouver, Alberta and beyond from Air Canada, West Jet, Pacific Coastal Airlines and Central Mountain Air. The town of Courtenay is only five kms from Comox Harbour on the picturesque Dyke Road. We stayed at the Cape Lazo RV and Campground in the Point Holmes area, ten minutes east from downtown Comox and next to the public boat ramp for access to great salmon fishing. We wanted to be in Comox for August 5, 6, 7th (BC Day Celebrations) for Nautical Days and the Filberg Festival. Arts and

crafts were set up in tents at Comox Marine Park and at Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park; both had live entertainment and food vendors for the festivities. Monday was the annual Nautical Day’s Festival Parade which was a popular event with locals. The Comox Valley has to be the (per capita) kayaking capital of Canada. Everywhere we went, people were kayaking or canoeing. We are both avid kayakers, and are always looking for sheltered places to paddle or go on short day trips. The Comox Valley waterfront has it all. It is set up for the experienced or beginner paddler. The Comox Valley Kayaks and Canoes shop is the busiest kayaking establishment we have ever seen - the boat ramp next to the kayak shop was waiting room only. They have more than seventy-five kayaks, canoes and paddleboards for rent. We talked to a senior’s kayaking group who had driven up from Ladysmith a 136 km (85 mi) south to go paddling for the day to explore the ghost ships in Royston, then visit the white sand beaches surrounding Tree Island (Sandy Island Marine Provincial Park). For the last two decades Comox has become a mecca for the 30

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

older generation. The air base personnel had a big influence on the Comox Valley over the last 75 years, setting an example by promoting a fitter and healthier way of living, which has influenced the newer generations. We noticed that many seniors also enjoyed a very active lifestyle with so many options such as hiking the trails and beaches, cycling, running, golfing, sailing, playing tennis and kayaking. When we were in Comox we bought our fruits and vegetables from the local farms and seafood from the dock and fresh markets in town. This seemed to give us a little more energy to paddle that extra kilometre. These amenities, along with a new hospital and WestJet daily service has made Comox a great place to retire. Harbour Air’s Seaplanes also have daily flights giving commuter’s dock-to-dock service connecting Comox’s waterfront to Vancouver’s Harbour front in 50 minutes. Mount Washington Alpine Resort has helped make the region a year-round destination with downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and mountain biking, alpine hiking and

scenic walking in the spring, summer and fall. It took forty minutes to drive up to the resort from downtown Comox. The road ends at the base of the chair lift at the ski lodge. We had a disabled senior with us and they stopped the chair lift for us so he could get on. (That made his holiday!) The summit elevation of 1,590 meters (5,220ft) gave us a 360 degree panorama view overlooking Comox Valley and the Beaufort Mountain Range. We had a great lunch at the lodge restaurant. It was filled with travellers from bus tours from the valley and around Vancouver Island. The beaches in Comox are spectacular. Goose Spit is a little peninsula that is very popular with the locals and school groups for beachcombing and learning about the ocean environment. One of the days we were there it was overcast and windy, but this is when people come to Goose Spit for kitesurfing. We were amazed what they could do with a board, a kite, and a little wind. Goose Spit has also been a training center for the sea cadets for sixty-five 32

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

years. In the summer months, more than 1,000 Cadets come from every region in Canada to the “HMCS Quadra Cadet Training Centre” for two to eight week courses. Another beautiful beach we had to explore was Kye Bay, located on the eastern shores of Comox, next to the Canadian Air Force base and the Comox Air Port. This is a popular place for families and pets. When the tide goes out you can walk for kilometres. The scattered little tide pools left behind heat up like mini hot tubs. The 19 Wing Comox Air force base is still very active, and is home to the 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron and the 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron. There are very few places where you can go golfing in the morning, walk through alpine meadows, have lunch at a ski resort at noon, stroll the white sand beaches in the afternoon, have fresh seafood for dinner, then go for an evening paddle at sunset, all in one day with no crowds. Comox is an oceanfront adventure paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Protecting Your Investment When the Fun Ends Is there anything better than hitting the open road in your recreational vehicle? This is the moment you have worked hard to enjoy and the last thing you want to worry about is how you are going to protect your investment when you return home or when the seasons start to change. Canada has an extremely harsh climate when it comes to maintaining recreational toys — the winter beats down on them with rain and snow, while the summer heat can deteriorate the exterior paint and seals. Easy Build has the solution to protect your investments, while providing a fast and durable shelter that won’t break your budget. The company specializes in pre-engineered steel-framed structures that are erected out of galvanized steel tubing using their patented “slip-fit” system. The structures are designed for an expedited installation process with the added durability to withstand our tough winters. Additionally, your building will be maintenance-free once it is erected, as you will not have to worry about rust, rot, or termite damage. The steel frame can be anchored into any foundation and it has the ability to be disassembled and relocated with minimal material loss. As an added benefit of the product, you are able to add on to the footprint of the structure by adding onto the length of your building with ease. The structures range from 10ʹ to 50ʹ in width (clear span), with clearance heights starting at 8ʹ and through 16ʹ, with the length being as long as you require. Easy Build has structures that range from 34

roof coverage only to fully enclosed garage packages equipped with overhead and main doors, windows, insulation options, and more. They provide a variety of sheet metal profiles and colour options to choose from to ensure

your structure is aesthetically pleasing and matches the other buildings on your site. If you own any type of recreational vehicle, there is an essential desire to keep them protected, well-maintained, and able to perform at any given moment. By sheltering these products, you are sustaining their value as a long-term asset while avoiding investing more capital into unnecessary repairs and maintenance. This proactive decision to shield your possessions will help you to enjoy them for an extended lifetime and potentially increase the resale value based

on the retained condition of the unit. Easy Build Structures has a fast and durable building solution for almost any situation and the company will work with you to help solve your individual shelter requirements and ensure you have safety and security for your recreational vehicles and toys. With the continual rising construction costs and extending time for traditional wood buildings, their portable framing system is the cost-effective and efficient answer to your shelter needs.

SURREY, BC,CANADA PRE-ENGINEERED STEEL STRUCTURES FOR COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL & RESIDENTIAL Easy Build supplies and installs steel building structures to municipalities, governments, airports, school districts, firehalls, work yards and farms. Summerland’s Emerging

Wine Industry DESTINATION BC/KAREN MEDIG

BY DENNIS BEGIN

36

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

Two decades ago, people would joke about the quality of British Columbia wines, preferring wines from the Napa Valley in California or the Burgundy Region of France. That attitude no longer exists, as BC wines can compete with any wines around the world. In April 2017, at the 34th International Wine Challenge in London, England, the gold medal was won by the Meyer Family Vineyards near Oliver for their Pinot Noir. Other winning wineries include CC Jentsch Cellars, Church and State Wines and Popular Grove Winery.

The viticultural or wine industry is not very old in the province, with the first winery being Calona Wines, dating back to 1931. In 1984, there were only 13 wineries operating in BC. There are now 929 vineyards and 341 licensed wineries across the province, with 171 wineries located in the Okanagan Valley. The starting point began nearly 30 years ago with the creation of the BC Vintners Quality Alliance (BCVQA), the organization that certifies wines and supervises the wine industry. Today, wine contributes 2.8 billion dollars into the BC economy, with BC wines so popular they are now sold at many larger BC grocery chains. Many wine lovers have taken wine tours in the Naramata Bench, located north of Penticton. Some of the more popular wineries include Kettle Valley, Lang and Red Rooster. Others prefer the wine of Central Okanagan, such as Mission Hill, Summerhill Pyramid, Mt. Boucherie and Quail’s Gate. In the South Okanagan are popular wineries like Burrowing Owl, Stag’s Hollow and the Gehringer Brothers. October 2017 SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS

SUMMERLAND WINES To make good wine it is necessary to have good grapes. Summerland is one of the emerging regions for wine production, with 18 wineries and four cider companies. It is part of the Okanagan Valley’s designated appellation region, which is a geographic region that matches grapes with the soil. There are five growing appellation regions in BC, including Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley, Gulf Islands, Similkameen Valley and of course, the Okanagan Valley. The quality of wine produced depends on soil type, temperature, moisture, slope of the vineyards and of course, the sun. The best grapes around Summerland for red wine are Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah. For white wine, the grapes are Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc. The easiest way to explore the Summerland wineries is to drive the Bottleneck Drive, which is 8 to 10 km long, extending from Dirty Laundry in the south to Savard Winery north of Summerland.

THE BOTTLENECK DRIVE The first stop is the Visitor Centre in Summerland to pick up a map of Bottleneck Drive, then head south on Victoria Road. The road meanders through orchards, vineyards and wineries, but there are plenty of directional signs. Wine tasting is not a race, so select four or five wineries and savour the experience. In most wineries the wine tasting is free, or your money is refunded when you purchase a bottle of their wine. Our first stop was the boutique-style Dirty Laundry Vineyard. The background story behind this winery starts with a laundry business that was not making money, so the owner added a second floor brothel, which did made money. Men left the Dirty Laundry with a smile on their face and clean clothes. The facilities now include a first-class restaurant, wine store and, of course, a tasting bar. through the vineyard, adding to the ambiance. Our second stop was the Thornhaven Estates Winery, located at the base of Giant’s Head Mountain, which is an old volcano. The breathtaking view of the South Summerland Hills is a great place to sip merlot and watch the day drift by. The third stop was Haywire Winery at Okanagan Crush Pad. With a name like ‘Crush Pad’, the wine has to be good. This is an organic vineyard that is free of synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. There are very few wineries in BC that are organic, requiring a different winemaking process. Crush Pad also provides a tour of the winery and explains how their wine is made, using concrete tanks to age the wine. The fourth stop was the Sage Hills Estate Winery, also an organic winery. They specialize 40

in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer grapes, selecting the grapes to match the soil and Summerland’s temperate microclimate. The tasting room also has a million dollar view of Lake Okanagan, north or south. What about the wine? My favourite wine is a merlot, but there are many other excellent wines along Bottleneck Drive. Of the Top 30 wineries in the Okanagan Valley, Dirty Laundry is ranked #8, Okanagan Crush Pad is #10 and Thornhill Estates is ranked #11. Some of the red wines we purchased included a 2015 Pinot Noir from Dirty Laundry, a 2014 merlot from Thornhaven Estates, a Narrative Cabernet and a white 2014 Pinot Gris from Sage Hills. We also visited the tasting rooms of a few other wineries and discovered Syrah wines, an emerging red wine in the Okanagan. Salut

Palm Springs Perfect Good Living in the Coachella Valley STORY AND PHOTOS BY PERRY & CINDY MACK INSTAGRAM @PERRY_MACK

Choosing a winter home isn’t much different than choosing your permanent residence. There are key things that you look for, all of which fall into three categories; mental and physical stimulation, weather, and amenities. They sound so bland and yet, when you experience these in the perfect combination – it’s grand! For us, the Coachella Valley provides a combination that creates a near perfect winter destination. Before I delve into lifestyle, let’s discover some of the bland, but life-easing, conveniences. Palm Springs has an international airport. Since we get family and friends flying in to visit (kids love warm, sunny, free vacations) we find that the airport is small enough to pick-up and drop off visitors easily, yet large enough to service destinations from across the country. That’s enough bland, let’s talk grand! Part of the attraction of warm weather is getting outside – from picking lemons off the tree in the morning, to walking past enticing shops, to hiking outdoors and discovering spectacular views around every bend in the trail. We love exploring the diverse landscapes that surround this small city, and the urban amenities it has, which are more typical of a larger centre. Palm Canyon Drive is the main street for Palm Springs. A plethora of shops and restaurants frame roughly seven blocks, and amongst the trendy, funky (and iconic souvenir shops), is the Palm Springs Art Museum (PSM), in Palm Springs (not to be confused with the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert). Founded in 1938, this is not a small town museum but one that rivals the largest urban centres. Generous and affluent residents have loaned or donated works throughout the 14,000 sq m (150,000 sq ft) including those of Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore and Robert Rauschenberg. You don’t have to be an art aficionado to wonder at the modern collections of glass, photography, art and architecture, and of course western and Native American art. Two outdoor sculpture gardens, and the obligatory café and gift shop complete the physical presence. But it’s the dynamic calendar of events and performances that make it an attractive draw for snowbirds. Part of the PSM is the intimate, 430-seat

Annenberg Theatre, a warm venue with nearly perfect acoustics drawing internationally known artists and performers in music, dance and theatre - and events including the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Switching from mental to physical stimulation is less than a stone’s throw away as immediately behind the PSM is access to the aptly named Museum Trail. Hiking to the top, the trail links to others, then follows the line of the hills with dramatic views of the mountains and desert. You can refresh yourself physically and spiritually along more than 140 trails, traversing over 2,000 km (1250 mi) within 100 km (60 mi) of Palm Springs. rock formations and cacti of the valley floor, Idyllwild emerges from the mountainous pine forest like an oasis rises in the desert. An eclectic palette of funky shops and eater-

ies that some would call quirky, line streets that wind carelessly on the mountainside, and provide a comforting, safe trailhead for exploring Mt. San Jacinto (pronounced ‘ha-SEEN-toe’)

State Park. Explore for the day or weekend, or journey into the high country for epic overnight adventures. A very popular area for strenuous, outdoor urban hiking (some call it shopping) can be found at Desert Hills Premium Outlet Mall. It has to be mentioned because any group with a shopaholic will need to stop there. It’s a short 20 minute drive from Palm Springs and you are virtually guaranteed to come home with something you didn’t know you couldn’t live without. Other outstanding hikes and unique places to explore that we enjoyed include; Indian Canyons, Coachella Valley Preserve/Thousand Palms Oasis, Joshua Tree National Park and the Salton Sea. Another is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which provides access to easy alpine forest hikes with breathtaking views. Bring warm clothes and footwear with good traction; it snowed during our hike in January. The Coachella Valley is a favourite winter home for us, our family and friends. Perhaps it is the perfect combination of civilization and wilderness that is just right for you? CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: DOWNTOWN PALM CANYON DRIVE, IDYLLWILD AND PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM.

Giant Redwoods RV Park

Come See Why You’ll Want to Come Back

Has visiting the redwoods always been on your bucket list? The redwoods are the tallest trees in the world and can reach heights of more than 107 m (350 feet). Redwoods can be a diameter of 7 m (24 feet) and 725,700 kg (1.6 million lbs). Some of these trees are 2,000 years old. Although they once grew throughout the Northern Hemisphere, today they can only be found on the coast of central California through to southern Oregon. A great place to base your visit to the trees is Giant Redwoods RV Park on the Eel River in Humboldt County of Northern California. This is a destination resort in the mild coastal climate that nourishes the magnificent red48

woods. You may never want to leave, but if your itinerary includes areas north like Portland and the Oregon Coast, or south like San Francisco and Napa, make the Giant Redwoods RV Park your primary destination and stay again as you return on your round trip. Why? Location, location, location. The park is situated on the Avenue of the Giants, the most fantastic awe-inspiring two-lane road through some of the oldest, tallest trees in the world. The park hugs a lovely slow flowing curve of the Eel River with shallows for wading, a delightful swimming hole, and views into Humboldt Redwood State Park’s forest across the river. Surrender to the peace while relaxing

on a sandbar, dipping your feet into the cool water, breathing in the fresh mild air, and gazing at the enormous trees outlined by the bluest sky. Fall in love with nature and connect your spirit with the thousand year old trees nearby. If you’re feeling adventurous, you’re in the right location. Just outside your RV the river offers kayaking and fishing, while hiking trails in the redwoods or into the mountains offer endless views. Just a short drive to the coast and you’ll be amazed by the spectacular convergence of land and sea along the Lost Coast. Explore the area hiking some of the National Recreation Trails, fishing, hunting and sightseeing in the mountain streams, and forests.

O R E G O N

A GREAT PLACE TO BE A TOURIST Salem, Oregon Words and photos by Dennis Begin

For snowbirds travelling along I-5, Salem is usually only a fuel stop with most people knowing little about the Capital of Oregon. Even the origin of the names Salem and Oregon are not well known. Salem is the original location where the Kalapuyan Indians lived along the Willamette River and was referred to as a “meeting or resting place”. Salem is also a Hebrew word ‘shalom’ meaning ‘peace’. As for the word Oregon, or Ouragon, the name describes the ‘Great River of the West’, now known as the Columbia River. This little city is one of my favourite places in Oregon and a great place to be a tourist. Salem was first settled by Jason Lee, a Canadian Methodist in 1840, and later became the State Capital in 1851. This city of 160,000 is called ‘The Cherry City’, because of its cherry blossoms in the spring. The government buildings are easy to find in the downtown area. The architecture of the State Capital is described as classic art deco, with various types of marble making up the building materials. The Rotunda is finished in historic murals depicting Oregon’s history, such as Lewis and Clark and the Oregon Trail. On top of the State Capital is 56

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

the statue of the Golden Pioneer or The Gold Man. The statue is 8.5 tons in weight, covered in gold leaf and is 7 m (23ft) high. There is an Observation Deck at the base of the Golden Pioneer, providing a panoramic view of the city. Guided tours are recommended. Inside the capital building are the Offices of the Governor, Secretary of State and the State Treasurer. The major democratic functions take place in the dual chambers of the Legislature (House) and the Senate. A visit would not be complete without a walk through the State Capital Park across the street from the main entrance. Plaques throughout the park depict the history of the state. The modern water sculpture in the park is known as The Wall of Water. Address - 900 Court St. NE Salem

COVERED BRIDGES The State of Vermont is well known for its covered bridges, although Oregon is not far behind. Covered bridges were constructed largely between 1900 to the 1930’s to help preserve the life of a wooden bridge. Originally 450 covered bridges existed in the state, but only 53 remain. Since Salem is split between Marion and Polk Counties, only two covered bridges actually remain in Marion County. To the northeast is The Gallon House Covered Bridge near Silverton, which is the oldest covered bridge in the state. Built in 1916, the bridge is 25m (84ft) long and crosses Abiqua Creek. During prohibition the bridge was used as a drop zone for the bootleggers, with the bridge receiving its

WILLAMETTE VALLEY PIE COMPANY. GOT PIES? When I first asked a local resident what there was to see in their city, she mumbled something about the State Capital and then started to talk about pies. Having never turned down a piece of pie, it was time to follow my stomach. In 1999, the Gerald Roth family had a small cannery-style operation in their backyard. Today that same company does a multi-million dollar business and exports to eleven different states. In addition to berry pies, they produce cobblers, frozen fruits, jams, syrups, dried fruits and fruit snack bars. The key to their popularity and growth of the company came with the purchase in 2001 of La Suisse Pies, which were produced from scratch and tasting “…as good as Grandmother’s”. WVPC continues to use local suppliers, processing 12 million tons of berries annually and making thousands of pies. Visit the Farm Store to check out the processing plant and, of course, have a piece of pie. ADDRESS – 2994-82ND AVE. NE, SALEM Salem has many more attractions that will have to wait until our next visit. On the list includes AC Gilbert’s Discovery Village, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Riverfront Carousel, Read Opera House and the Enchanted Forest (just off I-5 south of town). nickname ‘Gallon’, as liquor was sold by the gallon. The second bridge to the southeast is the Stayton-Jordan Covered Bridge near Stayton, which spans Thomas Creek. Both bridges have been renovated over the years, preserving a legacy of American culture. OREGON WINE – HONEYWOOD WINERY The Willamette Valley is one of the best viticultural areas in the state. Because of its rich alluvial soil, grapes can be grown to produce pinot noir and pinot gris wines. Both have received critical acclaim from wine connoisseurs. The 303 bonded wineries in Oregon produce 1.6 million cases per year for a value of 1.4 billion dollars for the state economy. There is no shortage of wine in Oregon, with 384 different wines producing a full range of wines, including Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling and Pinot. Salem is right in the heart of ‘enotourism’ (tourism whose purpose is or includes the tasting, consumption or purchase of wine) so take a wine tasting tour of the twenty wineries located around the valley. Some of the more popular wineries include the Cristom and Cubanisimo Vineyards and the Red Hawk Winery. Honeywood is Oregon’s Oldest Winery, built by Ron Honeyman and John Wood, it opened for business in 1934. They originally produced fruit brandies, cordials and liqueurs, but now have expanded into a full line of premium vinifera wines as well as fruit wines. Try Honeywood BlackJack. Address – 1350 Hines St. SE, Salem WILLAMETTE HERITAGE CENTER Imagine, moving all of your local historical buildings onto one site, the old Mission Mill location, which at one time produced wool blankets. The restored mill is a good example of turn of the century industrial technology. In 2010, the Willamette Heritage Center or WHC opened, housing 14 historic structures. The buildings include the Jason Lee House, the John D. Boon House and the Pleasant Grove Church. This is a stroll through history as well as a display of the rich and diverse culture of the valley. The WHC also serves as a research library as well as an archive and educational center. Other services include a café, gallery, gift shop and artist studio. All the buildings are on the list of the National Register of Historic Places and are a real treat for history buffs. Address – 1313 Mill St, SE, Salem

Oh yes, did I mention there is no state sales tax in Oregon? We have always stayed at the Phoenix RV Park at 4130 Silverton Rd. NE, Salem, Oregon. The other good RV Park we looked at was Premier RV Resort, 4700 Dallas Hwy NW, Salem, Oregon. Both parks have a 4 out of 5 rating and are first class parks.

Monument Valley in Winter STORY & PHOTOS BY DENNIS BEGIN

My wife and I have been snowbirds for many years. We have explored the areas around Mesa, Lake Havasu, Yuma, Quartzsite and Tucson, as well as the entire Baja. We were frequently warned to avoid the northern part of Arizona during the winter months because of the cold temperatures. It was only a matter of time, however, before we threw caution to the wind and headed north. Besides, we knew that Monument Valley had an elevation of 1645 m (5400 ft) and an average temperature of 12/1 °C (54/33°F)... warm by Canadian winter standards.

View of West and East Mittens.

View of sunset on King on His Throne, Stagecoach, Bear and Rabbit and Castle Rock.

Our first destination, in late February, was the Red Rock Country of Sedona, Arizona. We were treated to perfect spring weather, getting in some hiking, sightseeing and wondering why others had misled us. Sedona is probably one of the most beautiful places in the United States, but it is also in close proximity to other tourist sites such as Jerome, Fort Verde, the Verde Canyon Railroad and Montezuma’s Castle. Our goal, however, was further north to Monument Valley, located in the northeast corner of Arizona. We wondered about our sanity as we passed through Flagstaff, Arizona, at 2100 m (7000 ft) — it felt like a Canadian prairie winter. Turning our motorhome north on US-89, a little snow was not going to deter us. By the time we reached the Cameron Trading Post, the elevation dropped to 1200 m (4200 ft) and spring returned. The Cameron Trading Post is a must visit. Established in 1916, on the Little Colorado River, this modern First Nations Trading Post is one of the best stocked stores anywhere. The slogan of the store should be “……if we do not have it, you do not need it”. Back on the highway, we turned onto US-160 towards Tuba, Arizona. You pass through the 62

northern end of the Painted Desert, with its reddish-purple coloured landscape. Just eight km (five mi) from Tuba, we visited the Tuba Dinosaur site, called ‘Moen-avi’ by the Navajo or Dine Indians. Although Moen-avi is classified as a minor Jurassic archaeological discovery, the footprints, rib cage, partial head and dinosaur eggs are over 200 million years old. The local Navajo provide a guided tour for a small fee. It was very cool to walk among the dinosaurs! After arriving in Kayenta, Arizona, Monument Valley was only about 40 kilometres northeast along US-163. Monument Valley is not a National Park, but a working First Nations

reservation called Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. Nearly one thousand Navajo live on the reservation and make their living from sheep ranching and tourism. Our destination was the Village of Goulding, Utah. Originally Goulding was a trading post, opened in 1924 by Leone (he called her Mike) and Harry Goulding. Today the trading post has grown into a little village, with a grocery store, hotel, restaurants, retail stores, theater, church, school, medical center and a landing strip. The Goulding RV Park, situated in the Big Rock Door behind the village, has excellent facilities, including cable, internet, laundry and a store.

If a full service park is not needed, there is dry camping at Mitten View Campgrounds with a million dollar view. Other accommodations include the View Hotel and the Monument Valley Tipi Village. The View Hotel has front row seats to the two giant monoliths called West and East Mittens. According to Navajo mythology, the mittens (gloves) were left on the valley floor, waiting for the Gods to return. Despite the name, Monument Valley is not a valley, but an outcropping of sedimentary rock, dating back 200 million years. The valley floor is the Colorado Plateau, dotted with 300m (1000 ft) monoliths, buttes, mesas and arches called ‘monuments’. The rock is largely sandstone, coloured in red-oxide and shaped by wind, frost and extreme heat. The blue-gray substance on the rock is manganese oxide while the valley floor is covered in red siltstone. The monuments, subject to natural erosion, have been chiseled into different shapes over time. Many of the monuments look like animals, bearing names like Eagle Rock, Setting Hen, Elephant and Bear and Rabbit. Other monuments have creative names such as Stagecoach, Saddleback, The King on His Throne and The Big Indian. The Navajo of course have their own names for the mon-

uments. It was the ancient Anasazi or Pueblo Indians who called Monument Valley, ‘Tse Bii Ndzisgaii’, or the ‘Valley Between the Rocks’. They got it right. There are several ways to view the park. One is to remain on US-163 from Goulding to Mexican Hat, Utah, a distance of about 37 km (23 miles), but you will miss half of the monuments. The monuments are equally divided by the border of the two states. The second method, for a small fee, is to use your own car and drive to John Ford’s Point, but the 27 km (17 mile) loop road is very bumpy and dusty. There are also some restrictions on where you can drive. The third best method is to take a truck/jeep tour, costing around $70 USD. We selected the Goulding Truck Tour. A Navajo guide provides information on history, geology, mythology and facts about the park and people. Stops at various Hogans (mud and wood ceremonial structures) are built into the tour with Navajo women illustrating traditional weaving of baskets and blankets. Also along the route are numerous artisans and vendors, selling crafts, vintage jewelry and souvenirs. The best part was that we didn’t have to drive. John Ford’s Point, near the base of the Three

Sisters (Nuns), is a major tourist attraction. John Ford was a legendary film director who used John Wayne in five western movies, all filmed in Monument Valley. Some of the classic films were Stagecoach, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Searchers. Check out the small John Wayne Museum and the free John Wayne movie every night. Actor John Wayne best said it, “Monument Valley is the place where God put the West”. Monument Valley has been the backdrop for many other movies, such as The Eiger Sanction, How the West Was Won and Back to the Future, Part 3. Probably the most popular movie was Forrest Gump. In the movie, Forrest stopped running at Mile 13, which is located on US-163, on the way to Mexican Hat, Utah. After nearly a week it was time to leave. Although we had not seen the entire park, we had also ventured further north to visit the Valley of the Gods and Gooseneck State Park. It was now time to head west and pay another visit to the Grand Canyon. In our opinion, the most beautiful part of Arizona is found in the north and a little snow only adds to the beauty. Give yourself a little push and leave your comfort zone in the south.

ESCAPE the COLD in BALMY ARIZONA Story Contributed by Sun Vista RV Resort/Superstition Sunrise RV Resort

ARE YOU TIRED OF SPENDING YOUR WINTERS in the cold and snow? Come to Arizona where the winters are full of sunshine and balmy temperatures. Arizona has the driest weather in the United States with the least frequent days of precipitation. The Guinness World Record for the sunniest city on plant Earth is Yuma, Arizona with 91% of daylight hours being sunny. If you enjoy the great outdoors, then Arizona’s totally amazing sunrises and sunsets are just the thing. There are so many things to see and do outdoors that you will not be able to do it all in one visit to the state. There are many festivals, parades, zoos, fairs and rodeos to experience while basking in the warm weather. Arizona has both National and State parks to visit, along with National Wildlife Refuges. While there, save some time to visit Mexico, Arizona’s neighbour to the south. Exploring the shops and cafes across the border can be a great way to spend your day while bargain hunting and tasting some delicious food items. According to the Heard Museum and the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona, over one quarter of the state is American Indian reservation land with twenty-two sovereign communities. They have the second largest American Indian population in the entire United States. Hopping on the reservations can provide you with a whole 68

new opportunity to see handcrafted items from turquoise and silver jewellery to woven rugs and handmade baskets. Petroglyphs are easy to find in the area between Yuma and the Phoenix Metropolitan area. On those few cold or rainy days, maybe a museum or a casino is the better way to spend the day. There is an ample supply of both of them in the state. Learn about the Wild West back in the days of the pioneers and how they

lived in the great southwest, and tour some historical homes. You can visit museums that were once a territorial prison or even a ghost town or two along with many other historical places. Arizona has military museums, police and fire museums, train museums and even a musical instrument museum. If you enjoy sports, Arizona has professional teams with the Cardinals football, the Phoenix Suns and Mercury basketball, the Coyotes

hockey, Rattlers arena football and the Diamondbacks baseball. Baseball Spring Training is held all over Metro Phoenix and the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament is in Scottsdale. If you prefer participation sports there many golf courses, hiking trails, 4-wheeling in the desert or sand dunes, biking trails, Senior Olympics, and rock hounding or gold panning. Winter Texans Stay in South Texas, Play in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico There’s a great little town just across the border from Fun and Sun RV Park in San Benito, that has everyone spreading the news. Nuevo Progreso, Mexico is a town located just over the US-Mexican border that offers up spectacular shopping and fun things to do. They call themselves the friendliest folks on the border, and if you ask any Winter Texan, they’ll probably agree. “The people in Nuevo Progreso really look after the visitors,” said long time Fun and Sun resident, Canadian, Gary Scott. “We get a lot of people from Ontario, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and BC come down to Fun and Sun. They are great people, and we all head over to Nuevo Progreso.” WALK ACROSS THE BORDER Gary is a true-blue Winter Texan. He loves the town, the people and all there is to do there. “It’s right across the border from Progreso, 70

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

Texas, and it’s so easy to get to,” he said. “My wife and I usually just walk right across the border. There’s a bridge across the Rio Grande River from the US to Mexico. The river isn’t very wide at that point so most people park their cars in the States and walk over.” Gary and his wife love the fact that it’s only a half hour drive from Fun and Sun in San Benito, and that they feel safe and very welcome in Nuevo Progreso. SAFETY FIRST When asked if Nuevo Progreso was really as safe as they think, Gary had this to say: “We’ve been going there for 12 years now. When we first went over there it was just great because there was so much stuff going on. Now we just go over for the day, have lunch and stuff. There aren’t any problems really. Every now and then you’ll see a couple Federales around, but it’s completely safe.” Even the website for Progreso

Nuevo states there has been no US citizen involved in any drug-related violence in town. DENTISTS AND SHOPPING Many Winter Texans, snowbirds and Americans head over to Nuevo Progreso for dental services. Some of the country’s highest rated dental experts practice here, with over 40 offices in all. “A lot of people go over there to get the medication and to go to the dentists,” explained Gary. “It’s cheaper than in the USA. You can go across and get your teeth cleaned for $20! A lot of Canadians and Americans that don’t have dental plans just cross the border and get their work done.” “We like to go over there for a fun day. We do some shopping and have something to eat,” he said. “We might go over a few times a week. It’s one of the safer places in Mexico and it is typically a town that caters to tourists.” “The department stores here are great,” said

Ready for LEASE or PURCHASE

Gary. “They have one called the El Disco Super Center. It’s the largest department store in town and has everything from rustic furniture to music, piñatas and cowboy hats. At El Disco, they even have a bar – it’s called Panchos. It’s quite the place for Winter Texans. We come here to eat, drink and dance. The bartenders are friendly and they all know your name after a while.” They have other stores in town as well that carry everything a Winter Texan would need for the season, even hair salons and barbers. “I can get my haircut for $4 here!” he said with a smile. FESTIVALS, FOOD AND FUN Twice a year they hold festivals that celebrate the tourists who help keep the town’s economy alive. “They have one in January called Welcome Back Winter Texan Day. All the

vendors have all their goods out on the street,” said Gary. “There’s free tequila and free beer too! It’s a really good hoot. Then in March, they have Winter Texan appreciation day. There are mariachi bands playing and they give away little goodies. There are thousands of people that go over there for that.” Nuevo Progreso is also known for its food. Try some authentic Mexican food prepared by the people who know it best. There’s also seafood restaurants, Italian and great steaks. Most restaurants are family-friendly, and have live music. For more music, just step outside and listen to the street entertainers. Gary and his wife will be back next year so they can enjoy the diversity, safety and rich culture of Nuevo Progreso.

Tech Talk WORDS AND PHOTO COURTESY OF KAL TIRE

A SNOWBIRD’S GUIDE

to Getting the RV Ready for the Trip South For many Canadian snowbirds, heading south—whether it’s to Fort Lauderdale, Scottsdale or Palm Springs—is an annual affair, one that takes careful planning and organization. Of course, before you can even begin to pack up, you’ll want to make sure your RV and its tires are ready for this epic journey. 1. INFLATE & INSPECT No one wants to start their trip south with a flat tire. One of the best ways to ensure your tires are healthy and ready for the journey ahead is to check their pressure and condition. • Inflate tires to the recommended PSI, including your spare tire. • Inspect sidewalls for signs of weathering and aging, including cracking, feathering and fading. • Inspect the tread for depth and unusual wear (which could point to an alignment problem that could decrease the life of your tire. For a journey like this, where you may be crossing through the snow and mud of Canada before hitting the dry, hot pavement of the South, it’s best to have a tread depth of at least 6/32”. Your tires should still be in good shape for the trek back to Canada in the spring if you follow this guideline. 2. PREPARE Even with all that inflating and inspecting, you can’t always ward off debris on the road. Before you head out, make sure you have the necessary equipment to change a flat tire, including: • An accessible, well-inflated spare tire in good condition • Jack or ride-on ramp • Chock (for double-axle trailers and to keep other tires in place) • Tire iron • Cones to place around your RV as a warning to other drivers 3. GET YOUR BRAKES IN LINE This is an essential step with any vehicle you plan on driving, and on any road condition. Even if your brakes are not making that horrendous squeaky noise when you depress them, a professional brake inspection should be done at least once a year, and an ideal time is in the weeks ahead of your cross-country journey. A certified mechanic will check to see if your brake fluid is clear and transparent like cooking oil, and will replace it if it’s dark and cloudy. They will also check to see if your brake pads and/or discs need replacing or if there is any damage to your brake lines. 4. MAKE SURE YOUR WHEEL BEARINGS ARE BEARING UP Most people find out about their wheel bearings when they hear a loud rhythmic and vibrating noise emanating from below their RV while driving. 72

SNOWBIRDS & RV TRAVELERS October 2017

Some people confuse it with tire distress, but it usually means the seal on your wheel bearings is broken or damaged and the bearings are not ‘rolling’ properly. Wheel bearings are a set of steel balls that ride the axel inside your wheel’s hub and help your wheels spin fast and with as little friction as possible. A certified mechanic can check to see if the wheel bearings require repacking with new grease or if they need replacing. This can be done when you get your brakes inspected. 5. GET POWER TO THE PEOPLE Before you embark on any road trip, it’s important to inspect your RV’s electrical system (AC and DC), including all plug-in outlets, appliances, batteries, cables, AC unit, and especially your circuit breaker and fuses. Knowing where your circuit breaker is located and testing your fuses is imperative in preventing any power surges and your circuit from overheating, which in the worse case scenario can cause a fire. If you’re unsure of how your RV electrical system works, visit your local RV dealer or a certified mechanic. For this task, it’s best to get assistance, as there is a risk of shock and serious injury. 6. ENSURE LIGHTS ARE READY FOR ACTION Now it’s time to make sure your exterior lights are in working order. First, ensure headlights, high beams, indicator lights, marker lights and brake lights shine in front and back of your RV, and triple-check that the wiring is working if you are towing your vehicle behind your RV. Having someone inspect your lights while you are in the driver’s seat, turning them on and off, is best. 7. HAVE SUPPLIES AT THE READY If your RV does break down, being prepared will go a long way. Carry an RV survival kit with emergency food and water, an LED flare, solar and hand-crank NOAA radio, LED flashlight, candles or lanterns, mobile phone charger, water purification tablets, hand warmers, etc. Of course, double-check you’ve got what you need in the event of a flat tire, and that you’ve got tools to check your tire pressure throughout the journey.

How Will New Wireless Policy Changes

Save You Money

On Your Phone Bill?

CANADIAN TRAVELLERS will soon have more choices for mobile service while they’re travelling, thanks to changes in cell phone unlocking laws by the CRTC. Starting in December 2017, all newly purchased cell phones must be unlocked, and unlocking fees for current devices have been banned. These new regulations give travellers more freedom to choose services outside of their home carriers. Prior to these policy changes, many travellers opted for plans provided by their home carriers out of convenience, but these plans are often far from the best option, mainly since roaming as a snowbird is hugely expensive. A more attractive option may be a local SIM card. At first glance this may seem like an affordable and flexible option for those Canadians

spending long stretches in the United States, but taking a closer look reveals some limitations. To start, travellers need to find a local store at their destination and spend time and money setting up the SIM and service. There may even be extra fees related to activation and network access, plus possible overage charges. Many local SIMs also require customers to maintain a minimum balance to keep the card and the account active, meaning extra year-round payments. Plus, travellers will be billed in the local currency, so considering the exchange rate, the cost for a local SIM may be more than budgeted. Another option that has grown popular is choosing a travel SIM card, like the USA Travel SIM from Roam Mobility. With services like Roam, travellers get the plan features they want -

The lowest price U.S. cell plans for Snowbirds

including prepaid plans and a local phone number - at affordable local rates. Plus, they can keep their SIM and phone number for the next year, without any contracts or minimum balance required. Travellers are also able to activate their SIMs and schedule plans in Canada before they travel. Roam Mobility also offers long-term plans for snowbirds and other travellers spending long periods of time south of the border. FIVE STEPS

to Get Better Gas Mileage Save Money on Your Next Vacation Love your RV, but dread the trip to the gas station? With sky-rocketing fuel prices it can seem like driving a large RV on a long distance trip is just too expensive. But with some diligent planning and careful maintenance there are ways to get better gas mileage. (So you can splurge on the name

1

brand snacks at the next rest stop.) Here are some tips:

Check your tires. When your tires are low it can definitely affect your fuel economy – by as much as 3 percent. Keeping the correct pressure for your RV will also prevent premature tire wear. If you can’t remember to use a gauge, consider investing in a tire monitoring system that will alert you if the tires are getting low.

2

Go for regular tune ups. Keeping your RV in top running condition will also increase the fuel mileage. Get the oil changed at the tune up. Using a synthetic oil will further reduce internal engine friction and increase your fuel efficiency. At the tune up they will also replace any dirty air filters, which can, depending on your RV, boost your efficiency by nearly 10 percent. Service technicians will also make sure that spark plugs and shocks are working properly.

3

Resist idling. If you are just sitting in the RV try not to keep the engine running.

You know you’re getting zero kilometers per litre, right? Just turn the engine off if you’re going to be staying in one spot for more than a few minutes. Gas engines will use more fuel to sit still, and although diesels use less fuel there are still lots of restrictions on idling heavy vehicles. Also, try to plan your trip to avoid rush hour, then you will avoid idling in traffic.

4

Keep it steady. Don’t put the pedal to the metal when bringing the RV up to speed after stopping at a light. Once on your way try using cruise control to help you maintain your

speed. Keeping the RV at a constant speed will definitely keep your gas use lower. Reducing your speed can increase fuel economy by as much as 7 percent.

5

Keep it light. There is a reason why there are recommended weights for RVs. If you are travelling with extra weight, the RV will use more power and thus more fuel. Try not to use the air conditioner if you don’t need it. Using a light hand on the air conditioning will put less stress on the engine and help improve gas mileage.

Dometic Gives Back 2017 RVSEF RV Technical Education & Safety Conference Scheduled

The RV Safety & Education Foundation invites RVers and non-RVer alike to mark their calendars now for the next RV Technical Education & Safety Conference scheduled for October 1-5, 2017, in Elizabethtown KY. According to Walter Cannon, Executive Director of RVSEF, “The RV Technical Education & Safety Conference has been called an RV academy, an RV school and a college for RVers, but the best description would be that it is a Pure Learning opportunity for any new or potentially new RV owner, any seasoned RV veteran, in fact, any RV enthusiast who desires to know more about everything RV. Our conference is focused solely on education with a personal touch, so I guess any of those titles would work!” Cannon further added, “Our curriculum covers technical topics, safety topics and lifestyle topics and we have been fortunate to have the top caliber of instructors possessing technical training expertise sharing their years of accumulated education, knowledge and experience with our attendees.” Previous Conference attendees proclaim it is the best RV educational experience available. Dometic recently donated Fan-Tastic Vent products to Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle; an organization that provides clean mobile showers for the homeless. When Dean Dodd, founder of Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle in Sacramento, California, reached out to Dometic for Fan-Tastic Vent Fans for his second converted bus, Dometic jumped on the opportunity to support a great cause. “Coming from a background of homelessness myself and knowing what it’s like to not be able to get a shower, I had a heart for those who are still without. In 2015, the idea came to me. Together, with a dream team of builders, we set out on an 11-month build project to make Cleansing Hope Shower Shuttle come to life,” explains Dodd, who runs the Mobile Shower Shuttle himself three days a week. Dodd adds, “We are restoring hope and dignity through providing the basic need of getting clean with our showers. We develop relationships with these people and see lives changed over time. We are seeing about 50 people each day.” Dodd is not the only one with this brilliant idea of a Mobile Shower Shuttle, turns out there are Mobile Shower Shuttles happening all over the world! People are taking buses and converting them into a clean, private, free space for the homeless to shower. These shuttles cater to children and handicapped as well. Mobile Shower Shuttles are proven to be a key factor in assisting the homeless to a better life. Being able to take a shower and clean up has given many the opportunity to find a job and a safe place to call home. www.dometic.com

Rising Star Casino opened its new RV Park in August Rising Star Casino Resort (a Full House Resorts, Inc. property) opened the Rising Star RV Park, uniquely located near the center of the Rising Star property, convenient to the resort’s casino, golf course and a short stroll from the quaint historical town of Rising Sun. The RV Park includes: 56 spaces (each with full hookups including power), water and sewer, private bathrooms with showers, washers and dryers, a Bocce ball court, playground, dog park, picnic tables and grill area, fire pit, cable TV, WiFi, access to indoor pool, 18-hole golf course, casino, hotel, restaurants and entertainment facilities of the Rising Star Casino Resort and convenient access to a nearby grocery store. Full House Resort’s President and CEO Dan Lee said, “We are adding the RV Park to Rising Star Casino Resort to bring new tourism to our property and the community. The RV travel market is large and growing, especially in our geographic region. Approximately one in ten households now own a recreational vehicle and the majority of these RVs were manufactured in Indiana. We believe the RV Park is a perfect complement to our existing casino, dining, sports and entertainment facilities.” Rising Star already has two hotels on its property: the Rising Star Hotel and the Lodge at Rising Star. Some people, however, prefer to stay in thier own recreational vehicles, either as part of a long journey or as a convenient getaway close to home. Guests of the Rising Star RV Park will have acess to all the same amenities as guests of the Rising Star hotels. Rising Star Casino Resort, in Rising Sun, Indiana, is 45 minutes from Cincinnati and less than a two hour drive from Indianapolis, Indiana, Louisville, Kentucky and Dayton, Ohio. It is just over a two hour drive from Columbus, Ohio. Rising Sun is a historic riverboat town along the Ohio River surrounded by verdant green rolling hills laced with quiet country roads. The town offers a boat ramp and public dock available to guests of the RV Park. It makes a great destination for relaxing, exploring, bicycling, golfing or enjoying the casino.
