SEPTEMBER EDITION

Written by Han Le Each fall, student pharmacists from all across the southeast region gather for a fun-filled weekend full of networking, leadership building, regional officer elections, and policy development at the American Pharmacits Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists Midyear Regional Meetings (APhA-ASP MRMs). MRMs are the only meetings in the United States designed exclusively for student pharmacists. This year I am thrilled to lead the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, APhA-ASP chapter in organizing this year’s MRM event. The meeting was an important springboard for my involvement with APhA and it helped shape me as a leader. This year’s meeting will be held at the Caribe Royale All-Suite Hotel and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida from October 14-16, 2016. Orlando is arguably the theme park capital of the United States and we

incorporated that into this year's theme: "APhantasy MRM." We are encouraging everyone to pack their wands, capes, tiaras for the ultimate fantasy-themed Friday Night Social!

MEN’S HEALTH ROPES COURSE Written by Jonathan Tran and Karina Friman

APhA-ASP Mental Health is a new and evolving branch of ASP. The organization began in Gainesville two years ago and focuses on the mental health and well-being of pharmacy students. The curriculum can be rigorous, involving long hours of studying and fluctuating levels of stress. Some students juggle a part-time job, or extra-curriculars along with classes. As the semester continues, students can forgo regular exercise, healthy diet, and free-time in order to keep up with the demands of their schedule. APhA-ASP Mental Health aims to pull students outside of the stressful workload and give them a chance to take a break and take some time for themselves. In doing so we hope to promote self- reflection and physical activity, as well as interaction with other students who are most likely going through the same struggles. The Lake Wauburg high ropes course, was started last year and involves several team based

activities. We started on the ground with some ice-breakers, like trying to move a tin can filled with water using nothing but multiple strings tied together. Another activity involved moving between two platforms using well placed narrow wooden beams. The team skills we developed on the ground really helped on the high ropes course, which was a combination of exhilarating and terrifying. There were numerous obstacles high above the ground, including a leap of faith where our team belayed one member as they jumped off a wooden beam in attempt to hit a ball elevated over 15 feet in the air. It ended with a fun zip line back to the ground. The Ropes Course is an opportunity to destress, while building new relationships and strengthening old ones. It makes us excited about what Mental Health can bring to ASP and the possibilities it can have in the years to come.

MRM 2016 [continued] Our chapter belongs to Region 3, which comprises of seven states: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. We are a very strong region and anticipate close to 800 attendees at this year’s MRM. I am thrilled that 200 of the registrants are from our very own chapter. Go Gators! Planning for such a large and important event required a lot of teamwork and collaboration from all four of our campuses. I have a committee from each campus assisting me with the planning of this event. Members include; from the Gainesville Campus: Meredith Diamond, Ada Jutba, Alyssa Lowder, Samanth Penalver, and Marry Vuong; from the Jacksonville Campus: Larry Coy, Michael Finnick, Refat Noor, Kelsey Ohman, and Shannon Stittsworth; from the Orlando Campus: Katie Li, Kevin Martin, Mario Pedraza, Kristen Prince, and Jennifer Ryder; from the St. Petersburg Campus: Jessica Boh, Jimmy Hayden, Caroline Haver, Brittany Heuser, and Michelle Weaver. We worked hard to not only develop the theme, fundraise, and recruit members for the Expo component of MRM. Additionally, our APhA-ASP advisors have shown incredible support and patience throughout the planning process of MRM. I am very grateful to have support for our vision of MRM and look forward to everyone enjoying the fruits of our labor in October!

APHA-ASP AND FSHP HOST ANNUAL Written by Alexis Galamay

GAME

NIGHT

Game Night is an event that APhA-ASP and FSHP hold every year to welcome each incoming class to our pharmily. APhA-ASP President-elect Meredith Diamond, FSHP President-elect Alexis Galamay, and FSHP Membership Coordinator Emily Harman worked together this year to make this event a success. Game Night took place on August 31st in the HPNP Atrium, where we had a potluck of food and drinks, including pizza and snacks. There were a variety of games set up at each table, and we rotated games and teams to give everyone a chance to meet new fellow students. By the end of the night, we all gathered together to play a hilarious game of Mad Gab! It was definitely a great way for 1PDs to get to know APhA-ASP and FSHP in a relaxed environment, and it was also a fun way for upperclassmen to meet future members and leaders of our organizations.

APhA-ASP AND NCPA HOST POLICY WEEK Written by Camila Galindo

This year APhA-ASP and NCPA hosted events for Policy Week, September 26th-30th. Policy week was packed with events including guest speakers, fundraisers, and voter registration drives. Fundraisers were organized in an attempt to raise money for the FPA, Florida Pharmacist Political Action Committee Challenge. Donations collected from the fundraisers help fund legislators that realize the important role of pharmacists in healthcare and support issues that are important to the field of pharmacy including provider status.

MEN’S HEALTH STADIUM CHALLENGE Written by Jack Guerci

The 3rd Annual Stadium Challenge hosted by APhA-ASP’s Men Health returned this fall semester on Friday, August 26th at 5:30 PM. This event was created to set the tone of a new school year by focusing on fitness and health, emphasizing the importance of a collaborative environment. We had hoped to really connect the classes through this challenge in a fun, active setting. We incorporated a variety of exercises, which included stadium runs, calisthenics, and agility games. Our focus was to promote a positive attitude and M E E really T I N G S focus on the effort put in by everyone attending. It was great seeing every participant become motivated by one another and give it their all during the event. After about an hour and half of a total body workout, we concluded our event for the evening. OPPORTUNITIES Prizes were given based not ability, but those who displayed the most effort and enthusiasm. Fresh Market gift cards for $10 were distributed to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, respectively. This year our winners were Lisa Deacon, Yang Zhao, and Emily McElhaney. again to the winners and thank you to F U N D R ACongratulations ISING everyone who participated. We had more than 15 attendees and we hope to plan more activities such as this one in the future months to come.

My interest in photography originally started back in high school when I had access to photo equipment when I helped out with the school yearbook. Over the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of taking photos and running social media outlets for friends and organizations like Cru, Aletheia Church, and now in Pharm School, APhA and CPFI. Or like Mario — far from an expert on many subjects, but generally balanced in a variety of activities and interests. And if I’m not exploring, then I’m probably studying, playing music on the ukulele or guitar, or relaxing in a hammock — which wouldn’t really be too surprising because I’m also president (and possibly event coordinator and communications director) of the UF Hammock Club, which started last fall after some successful events gathering hundreds of undergrad students to hang out at Westside Park last spring. Since then, the club has received recognition from other colleges around the US along with some mentions in the Washington Post and local papers. I can’t wait to interact with you and help document our journey this year with APhA-ASP here in Gainesville!

Capturing moments is one of my favorite ways to experience life.

Being the perfectionist that I am, it took an embarrassing amount of months to decide on the “look” and name of my “business.” In 2014, I officially launched my photography page called Lucidity by Lucía. Aside from the fact that I love photography, everyone should know a couple other things about me: my sun sign is Virgo. I’m a Green (with a hint of Gold). I’m an INTJ (I know, we’re rare). My top strength is Strategic. Hexagons are my favorite shape. I’m shamelessly obsessed with the moon and the cosmic world. My spirit animal is the wolf. My favorite colors are sky blue and gold. I can say the alphabet

backwards. And I love long walks to the fridge. Now, we all know pharmacy school can turn us into lecture-binging robots and take a toll on the little sanity we have but, that’s why APhA-ASP can help us delve into the more human side of us. As a historian for this organization, I want to capture the many moments we share not only as future healthcare professionals, but as future colleagues and friends. I hope that through the photos and videos that Douglas and I take, everyone will be able to look back at everything we have accomplished and reflect on the time we spent together inside and outside the classroom.

Best of luck! Warmly, Camila Galindo ‘19
