ACES SOCCER

The 2000 season was the first for the Purple Aces in 2,500seat Arad McCutchan Stadium, providing UE Soccer with one of the finest facilities in the nation used exclusively for soccer. McCutchan Stadium was built 16 years ago as a football stadium. Its transition to a soccer arena began after the University discontinued football in 1997. A two-year process to transform the field to precise soccer standards resulted in an outstanding playing surface for players, and an outstanding viewing area for fans. McCutchan Stadium is located on the north end of the UE campus, and includes an enclosed press box, locker rooms, a weight room and offices. Located next to it is the Student Recreation & Fitness Center, and Carson Center, where most athletics department offices are located. Evansville has hosted more postseason soccer tournaments than any other school in the Missouri Valley Conference, including 12 NCAA Tournament matches. UE hosted an MVC Soccer Tournament in each of its first four years as a conference member. The combination of great fan support and excellent facilities has made UE a popular site for postseason play. Most recently, the stadium played host to the 2015 MVC Women’s Soccer Tournament. In fact, Evansville’s NCAA Women’s Tournament match at home in 1998 against Northwestern drew more fans than any first-round NCAA match in the nation.

RAY

#AcesAces

Head Coach Second Season Evansville, ‘00 After nearly a decade on the sidelines as an assistant coach at the University of Evansville, Marshall Ray was announced as the sixth men’s soccer coach in school history on Dec. 8, 2014. Ray, whose affiliation with the Aces program dates back more than 20 years, began his second season at the helm of the program in 2016. The Calvert City, Ky., native first stepped foot on campus as a player in 1995 before returning as the top assistant to former UE coach Mike Jacobs prior to the start of the 2006 season. As a player, Ray starred for the legendary former UE head coach Fred Schmalz, stepping into a starting centerback role for the team as it reached the 1995 MVC championship match against Creighton. Unfortunately, he would deal with injury issues in the middle part of his college career, which included a conference title in 1996, but he bounced back to score six goals and earn a Scholar-Athlete all-region honor as a senior in 1999. Since Ray stepped back on campus in 2006, UE players have been presented with more than 50 all-conference honors and 15 all-region designations. Two former Aces, Cory Elenio and Alec Dufty, have gone on to play in Major League Soccer, and most recently, Mark Anthony Gonzalez put together a stellar rookie season with Sporting KC-affiliated Swope Park Rangers in the the USL.

As an assistant, Ray helped with the nation’s largest turnaround in 2006 as UE posted a 9-8-0 overall record. In all, UE would go on to post six winning seasons, including four consecutive at one point, which was the best such run for the UE program since 1989-92. Following the 2013 season, Ray was named the NSCAA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Prior to his Evansville return, Ray worked under one of the nation’s all-time winningest coaches in John Rennie at Duke, helping the Blue Devils take home the 2005 ACC Tournament Championship. Ray began his coaching career with Drury in 2001 after playing a season professionally with the Nashville Metros in the nowdeduct A-League. Following two seasons as an assistant, he was promoted to lead the program at the age of 24, becoming the youngest head coach in the country. Ray resides in Evansville with his wife, Julia. The couple have four children, Patrick, Hilary, Eliza and Marshall.

2016 PURPLE ACES

“Marshall will do a great job at Evansville. I know it fulfills a lifetime goal, and he is more than ready to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity. He was an outstanding asset to me and our program at Duke, and I am a big fan. His background as a player and coach is superb, and he has a wonderful way of working with players.”

-- John Rennie Won 410 games at Duke, 1986-2015 “Marshall brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the soccer program. He knows what it takes to play at the highest collegiate level, and we look forward to him putting UE back on the map.”

-- Bill Vieth UE’s first-ever soccer coach, 1974-76 “What a great hire for UE. Marshall will bring the kind of excitement and experience that Evansville needs in order to continued the storied success of UE soccer.”

-- Mick Lyon UE All-American, 1987 UE women’s soccer coach, 1993-2001

Assistant Coach Second Season Missouri Baptist ‘11 After a two-year stint at Drury, Ian Henry was named an assistant coach on the UE men’s soccer staff on March 9, 2015. Henry also served as an assistant coach each of the last two seasons at Drury, a Division II school in the Great Lake Valley Conference. He helped direct the Panthers to 28 wins over that time, posting a second place finish in the GLVC and once punching a ticket to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Along with being an assistant at Drury, Henry was the head coach of the Springfield Demize in the USL’s Premier Development League. He guided the Demize to its best season ever in his first season. The squad finished third in conference and ranked second nationally in goals against average. Prior to Drury, Henry also spent time with SIUE, where he was responsible for planning and organizing training sessions. In addition to college and PDL coaching experiences, Henry was a full time director for St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. In that time, he was responsible for youth development and coached a number of athletes who would go on to top NCAA DI programs. “I would like to thank Marshall and Director of Athletics Mark Spencer for giving me the opportunity to join the staff,” Henry said. “We aim to create a winning program, both in the MVC and NCAA Tournament. I would also like to thank Coach Ryan Swan and my former players at Drury, who gave me some fantastic memories over the last two years. OLDROYD

After helping Lindsey Wilson College to a national tournament berth last fall, Josh Oldroyd was named to the the University of Evansville men’s soccer coaching staff on July 27, 2016. Oldroyd, who served as the goalkeeping coach for the Blue Raiders last season, helped the perennial NAIA powerhouse to a 14-5-2 record, peaking as high as No. 6 in the national Top 25 poll. Under Oldroyd’s tutelage, goalkeeper Yuta Nomura excelled, posting 11 shutouts over the course of 21 starts. He stopped nearly 75% of the shots that came his way, posting a 0.93 goalsagainst average in the process. Oldroyd was also tasked with heading up the school’s junior varsity team, which ended the year 3-3-2 and posted an impressive 3-0 victory at eventual Mid-South Conference champion Campbellsville. Oldroyd’s main duties with UE will involve training the team’s young goalkeeping unit as well as working with the overall defensive strategy and scouting. In addition, he’ll be charged with managing the team’s nutrition plan and travel. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Oldroyd enjoyed a stellar playing career with Bryan College, which is also in the NAIA. COLLEGE CUP

1985 When former UE head coach Fred Schmalz took over the Aces program in the 1979 season, he inherited an sixth-year program coming off its first two winning seasons in school history. Needless to say, that was only the beginning. Over the course of the ensuing decade, UE became one of the true powerhouses in college soccer, punching tickets to the tournament in both 1982 and 1984 to set the stage for a dominant 1985 campaign. The Aces, who finished with a 21-1-2 overall record, outscored opponents 93-15 over the course of the year to take a national No. 1 ranking into the College Cup semifinal, which was hosted by Evansville at Arad McCutchan Stadium. The tournament run included a 3-0 win over Indiana and a 1-0 victory over Penn State, but it would come to an end in the national semis as eventual champion UCLA picked up a 3-1 victory, marking the only loss of the season for UE.

1990 The dominant Aces run continued into the 1990 campaign, which marked the seventh of eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Headlined by All-Americans David Weir, Scott Cannon and Trey Harrington, the Aces outscored opponents 68-7 over the course of the season. Following an unbeaten 19-0-2 regular season, the Aces rolled over their Midwestern Collegiate Conference opposition in the league tournament, shutting out Xavier, Dayton and Saint Louis by a combined 12-0 score to set the stage for the national tournament. From there, 1-0 wins over both Boston University and Indiana sent the Aces to the national semis in Tampa, where the team would fall by the same scoreline to Rutgers.

DAVID WEIR

#AcesAces

In the proud history of the University of Evansville men’s soccer team, perhaps no player has made as significant an impact on the international scene as David Weir. An All-American forward for some of the best Aces teams in history, Weir would return to his native Scotland following graduation and go on to star with Falkirk, Hearts, Rangers, Everton and the Scottish national team. He currently serves as the assistant manager for Rangers FC.

“It was the right thing for me. Coming to Evansville and growing up and playing a lot of football, That really helped me. It made me a better athlete. I feel like it’s given me everything.” FALKIRK FC • Scottish First Division

Following graduation, Weir began his professional career with Falkirk, helping the side lift the 1993 Scottish Challenge Cup before earning a league title and promotion into the Scottish Premier League in 1994. He finished his Falkirk career with 134 appearances and eight goals.

HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN • Scottish Premier League

Prior to the start of the 1996-97 season, Weir made his first professional move, joining Edinburgh-based Hearts over the summer. He’d score his first goal for the team in just his second appearance, and he also helped the team to a 2-1 Scottish Cup victory over Rangers in 1998. He played 116 games for the club, scoring 12 times.

EVERTON FC • Barclays Premier League

Weir enjoyed one of the most impressive spells of his career after joining the Toffees in 1999. A stalwart in the defense, he made 269 appearances for the club and scored 10 times. Joining a team that was on the verge of relegation just a few years prior, Weir helped navigate the team into the UEFA Champions League in 2005.

RANGERS FC • Scottish Premier League

After a successful Everton stint, Weir’s time at Rangers became the stuff of legend. He would ultimately go on to win three league titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups while also playing annually in Champions League. Just days before turning 40, he would be named the Scottish Player of the Year in 2010.

SCOTTISH NATIONAL TEAM

Weir earned his first cap for the Scottish national team in 1997 and he’d go on to 69 caps with the squad, captaining the team four times. In 1998, he became the first player from an American college to represent a country other than the U.S. at a World Cup. He earned his last cap in 2012, becoming, at 40 years old, the oldest-ever Scottish international.
