Justin Mackey Academic Advisor

J

ustin Mackey is in his first season at UAB, serving in the role of academic advisor for the men’s basketball team. Mackey joins the Blazers after spending the previous nine years at the University of Kansas as an associate director for academic and career counseling. While with the Jayhawks, Mackey’s main responsibility with the academic counseling of the women’s basketball and softball teams. He was also involved in the strategic tutoring program at KU from 2004-08. In that role, Mackey worked in various academic support roles with the men’s and women’s basketball teams and taught communication studies courses as a graduate teaching assistant at Kansas. Mackey worked directly with the Jayhawk men’s basketball NCAA National Championship team in 2008, which graduated all five senior players. Mackey was born in Bonner Springs, Kan. where he attended Bonner Springs High School and competed in cross country, track and field, basketball and baseball. He graduated from Kansas in 2004 and received his master’s degree from the same school in 2008. Mackey is married to the former Molly Bachand, and the couple resides in Birmingham.

Judy Nichols Administrative Assistant 35th Season Overall

J

udy Nichols is serving in her 35th year with the UAB athletic department and is the longest tenured employee in the department. Nichols will retire from her position on Dec. 31, 2012. During that time, Nichols worked under Gene Bartow as his administrative associate for basketball and while he was the Director of Athletics. After working under former UAB AD Herman Frazier, she returned to the basketball office under former head coach Mike Anderson. She now handles administrative duties for Jerod Haase’s program. She also helps coordinate the UAB men’s basketball camps during the summer. Nichols was born and raised in Louisiana where she lived before moving to Birmingham 36 years ago. Nichols is married to Robert Nichols.

D

avid Dupont begins his first season with the UAB men’s basketball program and will be a graduate manager for this year’s team. His duties include assisting the video and filming, helping set up and break down practice and other responsibilities as assigned by the coaching staff. Dupont was a two-year member of the North Carolina basketball team as a walk-on from Greensboro, N.C. He appeared in 33 games during his two seasons at UNC, making one start.

ic Salem has been an invaluable contributor to the UAB basketball program for a long time. The 2012-13 season marks Salem’s 30th season with UAB basketball. He also is in his 16th year with the women’s basketball program. His duties include helping out with practice and assisting the coaches and managers whenever needed. He came to UAB in 1982 when he joined the staff under former head coach Gene Bartow. In the years since, Salem has seen the program grow. He enjoys working with the basketball team and being a part of UAB. In 1996, Salem was awarded with a UAB Varsity Honorary Letter, which is given to people surrounding the UAB athletic program who have made significant contributions to help better Blazer athletics.
