Florida Atlantic blocked a potential 28-yard game-winning field goal on the final play to hold off UAB in a 32-31 win in the season opener for both teams at Legion Field. The Blazers, who defeated the Owls by a 56-29 score last November, jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and took a 28-12 advantage early in the third quarter. Alfred Morris scored on a 38-yard run with 2:20 left in the game for the Owls to give FAU a 32-31 lead, its first of the game. UAB quarterback David Isabelle, who ran for three touchdowns, threw an interception that was returned 38 yards for a touchdown by Brently Harstad to pull FAU within 28-19 at the 6:19 mark of the third quarter. That play proved to be one of the largest in the game as momentum shifted at that point. After the Blazers went three-and-out on their next possession, FAU took possession at its 27-yard line and promptly marched 73 yards on only five plays to cut the lead to 28-26. Isabelle, making his first career start, finished with 214 yards rushing, a UAB and Conference USA single-game record for a quarter-

back. His rushing total was the second-highest in Blazers’ history. He had a 50-yard run in the final minute to set up the Blazers’ failed field-goal attempt. The contest could not have started much better for UAB. The Blazers were dominant in the first 15 minutes as they ran up 138 yards of offense on the way to a 14-0 lead. Meanwhile, UAB’s defense held the Owls to only 33 yards of offense in the opening period, and minus eight yards rushing. Isabelle also had one touchdown pass as he hit running back Daniel Borne for a 15-yard score with :46 remaining before halftime. Jeff Van Camp’s third touchdown pass of the game — a 43-yarder to Willie Flo — for the Owls’ final score of the game. Van Camp threw for 254 yards, while Jean had nine catches for 164 yards.

Zach Line rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead SMU to a 28-7 victory against UAB on Saturday night in the Conference USA football opener for both teams. Darius Johnson caught two touchdown passes from Kyle Padron as the Mustangs beat the Blazers for the fourth time in as many meetings since the schools became league rivals in 2005. David Isabelle threw a 4-yard TD pass to Mike Jones for UAB’s only score. It was set up three plays earlier when Bryant Turner forced an SMU fumble and D.J. Reese recovered to give the Blazers the ball in the red zone. Isabelle, making his second start for UAB, finished 7-of-15 for 109 yards, including a careerlong 50-yard connection with Frantrell Forrest. Forrest, who led UAB with five receptions for 71 yards, nearly scored on that third-quarter play but had the ball stripped at the 1-yard line. It marked back-to-back possessions the Blazers had the ball near the goal line trailing by a touchdown but were unable to punch it in. Later in the third, Padron hooked up with Johnson for the first of their two second-half scores to give the Mustangs a 21-7 cushion.

Johnson led SMU with seven receptions for 45 yards, while Padron finished 18-of-33 for 145 yards through the air. UAB’s Turner, in addition to his forced fumble, added two tackles for loss, including one sack, and a pass breakup. Marvin Burdette and Cornelius Richards finished with seven tackles each for the Blazer defense. With his 71 yards receiving, Forrest moved into third place on the UAB career receiving yardage list with 1,738. Trey Ragland again proved to be a valuable weapon for UAB in the field position game. The junior punter kicked five times for an average of 48.6 yards. He also booted a career-long 75-yard punt, which is tied for the second-longest in UAB history. On the ground, Pat Shed led the Blazers with 42 yards on eight carries.
