Kicker Josh Zahn missed five field goals in the game but was successful on both of his tries in the respective overtime periods.

Close Calls Were Story Of 2010 Season The 2010 UAB football season was characterized by close calls and last-minute rallies. The Blazers played six games that were decided by five points or less and had four games that were decided on the final play. UAB finished 2-4 in those contests. Another game — the Blazers’ 54-42 loss to East Carolina at Legion Field — also wasn’t settled until the closing minutes.

Southern Miss – Oct. 30 - W, 50-49 (2 OT) Bryan Ellis hit TE Jeffery Anderson for a twopoint pass play to give UAB a dramatic 50-49 double OT victory over Southern Miss at Roberts Stadium. Game Highlights - In a game that was tight from start to finish, UAB claimed the win in double overtime on Ellis’ pass to Anderson after head coach Neil Callaway made the decision to go for two. RB Pat Shed had scored on a 13-yard run to set up the game-winning conversion. Shed finished the game with 176 rushing yards and pair of touchdowns. WR Mike Jones had his best game as a Blazer as he had eight receptions for 86 yards and three touchdowns. The Blazers had a 35-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Golden Eagles scored two touchdowns in the final 5:32.

Two resulted in wins (Troy and Southern Miss) and two were losses (Florida Atlantic and Tennessee). Here is a quick look at each of the four UAB nail-biters and the final play that determined the outcome: Florida Atlantic – Sept. 2 - L, 32-31 The 28-yard FG attempt by UAB’s Josh Zahn was blocked with no time remaining as the Owls prevailed by one point. Game Highlights - UAB led 14-0 after one quarter and held a 28-12 advantage early in the third quarter before FAU rallied to trim the margin to 28-26 with 2:28 to play in the third quarter. Zahn made it a 31-26 Blazer lead with 7:28 to go with a 34-yard FG. After an FAU punt was downed at the UAB 1-yard line with 4:11 left, the Blazers punted out of their endzone with the Owls taking possession at the Blazers’ 38. RB Alfred Morris scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 38-yard run to give Florida Atlantic its first lead of the game with 2:20 to play. After the kickoff, UAB drove to the FAU 5, aided by a 50-yard run by QB David Isabelle. After two rushing plays, Zahn’s potential winning FG was blocked. Mary’ pass with no time remaining on the clock to lift UAB to the 34-33 victory. Game Highlights - UAB stormed back from a 23-0 second quarter deficit to record the largest comeback win in Blazers’ history. Ellis came off the bench and threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns in the game while Williams scored three touchdowns, two on receptions from Ellis (36 and 44 yards). UAB’s game-winning drive was 99-yards, covered in nine plays and accomplished in only 1:09 with no timeouts. Tennessee – Sept. 25 - L, 32-29 (2 OT) Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms connected with Denarius Moore for a 25-yard touchdown in the game’s second overtime to give the Volunteers a 32-29 win at Neyland Stadium. Game Highlights - For the second straight week, UAB rallied with a huge comeback. Down 23-7 at halftime (same halftime score as a week earlier vs. Troy), the Blazers dominated play in the second half, outgaining the Vols by a 281-98 1 02
