Welcome

I can't believe it's been 3 months already but it sure has been a cold start to the season. A lot of positive things have been happening for us lately with the cover image being wrapped around to the back of the magazine proving to be a massive success with a lot of feedback giving us a positive impression. We have placed a new magazine stand inside the Alstonville Plaza, which holds over 60 copies of the latest issue (40 more than the last stand) as well as some of the issue before on the bottom self (just incase you missed it). Bailey had his 1st Birthday on April 7th and apparently this milestone gives him the authority to boss his poor parents around while demanding hugs & kisses whenever he see fit (secretly we love the attention but don't tell him or it will go to his head). We have also increased the number of places that the Two Four 7 Seven Magazine can be found at the start of the season. So keep your eyes open in and around our beautiful area as there are now more than 50 locations our magazine will be distributed to each issue, details can be found on our website. The most impressive change happening with the Two Four 7 Seven Magazine is our copy increase. We have decided that as of the spring issue the circulation of the magazine will increase from 5,000 copies to over 10,000 copies! This is because of the support that local businesses and our amazing community have shown us. We also have a large subscription list and online following, with the magazine being emailed out each issue. Make sure to continue to let us know of upcoming events and activities, local news,

sporting events and community groups, as we will still place them on our Facebook page if you happen to miss the print deadline.

Chamber news

Lisa Dillon | AWCC President

I hope you'll agree that it would be hard to miss the Bruxner Highway turn-offs to Alstonville and Wollongbar now that we have our new signs. Not only are the signs enormous, but the landscaping is also elaborate. Once again, thanks to previous Chamber of Commerce committees for this achievement. The combination of the entry signs and the two new Pacific Highway signs, should make it difficult for tourists to ignore us.

As part of our effort to foster a strong sense of community on the Plateau, and to create an event that will publicse the Plateau, the Chamber is running its second annual photographic competition. This year the theme is People and Places on the Plateau, and first prize is $250 cash, plus your choice of any photographic course run by the Ballina Region Community College (kindly donated by BRCC). You'll find all the other details below. The Chamber is also working on a Plateau brochure to be distributed in regional Visitor Information Centres, and we have a Local Business Directory in the pipeline. Our other exciting news is that we are currently launching the inaugural Alstonville Wollongbar Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. These awards are being wholly sponsored by North Coast TAFE, for which the Chamber is very appreciative. This will showcase local businesses to the wider community, and also give our local businesses a pat on the back. The winners of seven categories will be announced at a formal dinner at TAFE's Nightcap Restaurant in late June. Please remember that nearly every dollar you spend on the Plateau helps a local family. Stay warm!

I love my shop

Mitre 10 Alstonville

Describe your shop in 5 words... Historical, quirky, unique, simple awesome.

and bush nearby, a great climate and friendly people.

Any tips? Our tips. It's all in the preparation.

What products do Mitre 10 stock? A comprehensive range of hardware, homewares and garden products.

What are the benefits of your move? The new site has plenty of off street parking and we have a new garden centre with an extended range of garden products including a great range of garden pots & ornaments. We also have an even larger range of seedlings, plants and shrubs.

Something people might not know about Mitre 10... We have a loyalty system operating in the Garden Centre which entitles customers to a 20% discount on their sixth purchase after five purchases of $25 or more.

What services do you offer to help the community? We now offer free home delivery on purchases over $10 to Alstonville & Wollongbar and a small fee applies to other areas and if you cannot get to the shop just ring and we can arrange cash on delivery.

When you next visit Mitre 10 check out the fully restored old Butter Factory, another amazing historical Alstonville building.

How did the idea for your store begin? We took over the business from another local family and wanted to retain a service for locals. The hardware store has been in Alstonville for over 20 years. What do you love about your store? We love the new location and the history of the building (the old butter factory). What do you feel you bring to the town? Old style service and old style quality. What do you love about working on the Plateau? We have the best of both worlds. Beach

Coach Rob Sheehan and Team Captain Hannah Sheehan with the Callan McMillian Trophy

The winning Premier Women's Team

Community Groups The 2013 football season has started in style for Alstonville & District Football Club with their top women’s team winning their fourth consecutive Callan McMillan Shield defeating Bangalow 4-3 at Oakes Oval, Lismore in extra time. The team coached by long-term coach Rob Sheehan, has had considerable success in recent years winning the last three grand finals (2010,2011 & 2012) as well as being Pointscore Champions in each of those years. Such is their talent that they last tasted defeat in 2010, going two entire seasons without losing a match. The Callan McMillan Shield final was in fact their 60th match without loss.

The 2013 team has seen many changes with some players moving from the area to attend universities and others for new jobs. This season saw some previous players return, some junior’s progress and a few new signings. The vast majority of the players are Alstonville girls that have played together for many years. Several attended Alstonville High School and in 2009 were winners of the State Knockout competition which meant lots of

travel to many towns including flying to Sydney for the final. The experience gained through playing at a high level has helped the club to develop programs to identify talented players and implement training to suit. The club has also recently achieved Level 1 FFA accreditation and was only the second club in Football Far North Coast to do so. The club has a dedicated and hard working committee with many helpers. The future looks bright for the club with over 100 players in many adult divisions and approximately 500 junior players playing in both competitive grades & the non-competitive grades, also known as Small Sided Football. As for the Women Premier Division, you can follow their season progress on the club website www.alstonvillefc.com.au where you can get updates, results and details of their next game. Games are played on either Friday nights or Sunday afternoons. The site also includes links, news and a children’s section or you can also follow the club on Facebook.

Preschool Activities

Wollongbar community preschool celebrated Mother's Day with a visit from the Alstonville Florist. Manager Alison Elford and trainee Lelia Trees visited the preschool and made small floral arrangements with the children using beautiful flowers, that they could present to their mums. The florist visit was the culmination of a project where the children had been drawing and painting still life pictures of flowers and plants. The children had been studying nature closely as well as planting in the preschool vegetable garden, this project supported the children's learning about how to care for plants and study what they need to grow. The florist visit allowed the children to create something beautiful and they were so proud of their creations. The visit made for a very exciting day, along with building relationships with the local community.

Winter has now arrived

It is the part of the yearly cycle where energy is at its lowest and cold slows the flow of energy & blood. The low energy/immunity can result in colds and flu, while slowed blood will exacerbate painful conditions. Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese medicine is very effective at maintaining immunity to prevent infections as well as treating flu symptoms & aiding rapid recovery to full health. This includes chronic fatigue where there is prolonged lingering of symptoms. Acupuncture is also an excellent remedy for painful conditions rapidly, safely & effectively relieving these debilitating disorders. To provide services at an affordable price, and to enable more people to gain the profound benefits of these modalities, Brigid at Mingmen Acupuncture (at Alstonville Complete Care), is offering Community Acupuncture on Friday afternoons. Treatments 1-5pm are $25. Regular treatments are beneficial to both treat & prevent disease, physical, mental & emotional. Traditional Chinese medicine is now nationally recognised and all acupuncturists are nationally registered. This means that the public can be assured that all registered therapists are health practitioners who are fully qualified to provide these services safely and effectively. Main Street Memories This year marks the 148th year of Alstonville (founded in 1865 as Duck Creek Mountain and Alstonville as of 1873). Originally part of the Tintenbar shire from 1906 until the amalgamation with Ballina Municipality in 1962.

in knee deep water during a rainy day.

The village has thrived since its early beginnings as a small settlement providing basic needs to a population less than some modern caravan parks. Needs such as education, supplies, entertainment and religion were catered for, and today Alstonville has a thriving centre with a fast growing local population involved in many various activities.

In 1911 the main street had curb and guttering installed which made a vast improvement to the look and functionality of what was suffered with previously. Although about this time Ballina was beginning to enjoy electricity it was not until 1933 when Alstonville’s main street began to receive power.

Many of the locals in and around Alstonville will remember the deep canyons the main street once called its curb and gutters. Often cars could be seen belly deep in these trenches after trying to park that little bit too close to the footpath. Even more interesting was trying to get from the passenger seat of a car to the path without being washed away

Recently we were lucky enough to have the road upgraded. Take a look at what the early settlers had to contend with a little closer to 1865 (those gutters look waist deep!)

Alstonville has had a post office in no less than 5 different locations. The first office in 1888 was on the corner of Bruxner HWY and Teven Road. It then moved a little down the road and after this in 1902 moved just up the street from the Federal Hotel (roughly where Options café is at present). Six short years later in 1908 the post office once again had a new location (now Quattro Country) just

across the street from where the main street Newsagency is at the moment. This was the 4th and longest home of the post office until in 1997 it wandered over to the Plaza and has been there ever since. As you can see the main street of Alstonville has had quite a change over the years and is constantly evolving. The latest refurbishments have changed the layout for parking and have refreshed the village’s look with the inclusion of some much needed greenery. Who knows what 2015 will bring with the Village celebrating its 150th anniversary, I guess we will just have to wait and see. Special thanks to the Alstonville Plateau Historical Society for the use of their amazing book “Postcards from Alstonville” available from the Crawford House Museum for only $10 (For contact details see article on P.8)

Dynamic Duo Grace School of Deportment and Grooming student ‘Liberty (Libby) Bennett’ has made it. Her future in the modelling world has now been established and it was her graceful ways, natural look and approach that saw her travel to Sydney for the national finals and be crowned Miss Country Girl Australia 2012.

Liberty started lessons with Elizabeth (Libby) Lund at Grace School of Deportment and Grooming in 2011 and Elizabeth travelled to Sydney with Liberty for the contest recently. Elizabeth says ‘It was clear straight away that if modelling was of interest to Liberty it is something that she would certainly be able to achieve, however at that stage Liberty was focused on a career in medicine. That is still an ambition for Lib, but may now be put on hold for a little while’.

Grace School of Deportment & Grooming

Liberty is now signed with the prestigious Sydney based agency – Chic Model Management. Urslula Hufngal the director of Chic and icon in the modelling industry was a judge at the final. Liberty says ‘I was not going to enter the quest because I still had my braces on’ however with the support and insistence of my mentor Elizabeth Lund from Grace School of Deportment and Grooming and Mel Carrero, marketing manager of Lismore Square, I decided to give the Lismore heat a try. I was shocked when I won then – let alone what I have achieved now.

Community Groups With a mixed membership of 40, the Wollongbar Garden Club meets in the Community Hall off Simpson Avenue Wollongbar, on the second Tuesday of each month at 10am. The aims of the club are to foster interest in and understanding of gardening in the local area and to beautify our villages with our gardens. With these objects in mind we have a range of informative, interesting guest speakers, but we DO NOT hold an annual garden competition, preferring instead to encourage FRIENDSHIP THROUGH GARDENING.

The Wollongbar Garden Club was formed in November 1993 and incorporated in 1998. The club has a connection with Gallipoli as The Lone Pine was adopted as its emblem with the motto “Forever

Wollongbar Garden Club

Growing“. Seeds from the original tree at this famous battlefield were collected by Lance Corporal Benjamin Smith and given to his mother who lived in Inverell. Hanna Hobbs with her husband, George, (First president of the Garden club), collected seeds from the tree grown in Inverell Park by its RSL, and raised seedlings. To mark ANZAC day in 1997 The Garden Club presented a young tree to Wollongbar Public School. Garden Club members were rostered for its care and in 2002 an engraved plaque was placed near the tree explaining its significant history. The Lone Pine, drawn and copyrighted by Noel Herden, features on our attendance book and members name badges. Social outings are also a feature of the club. Annual events include a meeting followed

by a BBQ lunch in May, a Spring Hat Parade used to entertain the residents of Maranoa Retirement Village, and a plant and flower stall used to raise much needed funds. Half our profits from the 2012 stall were donated to Quilts 4 Kids to buy wadding to help with their generous work. We visit gardens and nurseries in the local area. The club is a happy and active one and there is always a buzz of conversation over our great morning teas. Meetings usually have Pride and Joy, trading table and a raffle where flowers from our gardens are the prizes. Visitors are always welcome. One-Stop Health Shop

Alstonville Complete Care has been part of the local landscape for over a decade and new owners, Shaun and Joanne Cashman, are enjoying welcoming past, present, and new clients to this popular health care centre. Shaun, a chiropractor, and Joanne, a kinesiologist, and their three children, made a tree change four years ago, moving to the Northern Rivers region after running a successful chiropractic clinic in Sydney for 22-years. They continued to work in the local health care industry before taking over as owners and managers of Complete Care in October last year. The clinic and newly built pilates studio in Daley Street houses a dedicated, professional, and experienced team of practitioners offering the most extensive range of natural health care services in the Northern Rivers. Families can take care of mind, body, and spirit by choosing from chiropractic, kinesiology, physiotherapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage, bowen therapy, psychology, cranio-sacral, energy healing, herbal medicine, and speech therapy. “One of the great advantages of having such a diverse range of health practitioners under the one roof is that there is always someone, or a team of people, who can help with your health issues,” Shaun explains. “Complete Care really is a one-stop health shop.” For your convenience, Complete Care has both EFTPOS and Hicaps facilities so health fund and Medicare claims can be processed on the spot. For further information or to make an appointment phone Alstonville Complete Care on 6628 1654.
