TPAC update

Improve Our Tulsa

In August, Tulsa voters overwhelmingly approved the extension of Improve Our Tulsa. What does this mean for the Tulsa PAC? Within the package, $79.7 million dollars has been awarded to TPAC. These funds will allow us to address critical needs in our facility, like improving our ADA standards, replacing failing equipment, updating our aging loading dock and more. It will take several years of additional planning before you start to see any major changes, but I promise to keep you updated on our progress. Until then, we will continue to help our community partners in presenting the very best of performing arts. Thank you, Tulsa citizens for your support. It means everything to us.

I’m very excited about the 23/24 season. Broadway, ballet, symphony, local theatre and touring concert acts will once again grace our stages this season. There will be something for everyone. TPAC will welcome thousands of patrons through our doors this year, and we will do our best to make you feel welcomed as we help facilitate and deliver performing arts that will inspire and empower our community.

TSO’s 23–24 Season kicks off with the most recognizable four notes in classical music — Beethoven’s 5th Symphony! Our soloist for the evening is soughtafter cellist Sterling Elliot. Acclaimed for his stellar stage presence and joyous musicianship, Sterling Elliot is a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and the winner of the Senior Division of the 2019 National Sphinx Competition.

Making his television debut on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Alingon finished first in the public vote 5 weeks in a row to win the comic comeback contest and perform on the finale. He has since been invited to do stand up on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Adam Devine’s House Party on Comedy Central. In addition, he wrote for The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Adam Ruins Everything. Alingon went on to be named one of the “New Faces of Comedy” at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival.

TPAC Presents: Brown Bag It

Francisco Treviño

A singer and a songwriter, his Mexican heritage has strongly influenced his style, particularly after the age of 21, when he learned huapangos and other Mexican styles from local musicians.

He used this influence in his second LP of children’s music, recorded in Veracruz, México, with the help of local traditional folk artists and musicians.

In 1921, the resilient citizens of Greenwood, an all-black community in Tulsa, face a devastating racial conflict that escalates into an unstoppable tragedy. In the present day, the people of Tulsa confront a new challenge: how to comprehend and impart our history to future generations. Delving into the depths of prejudice and humanity, the characters grapple with complex choices, exploring themes of salvation, compassion, and personal beliefs.

What is it like to be the number one enemy of one of the most powerful men in the world? Bill Browder is one of the few who can answer that question.

Until 2005, Browder was the largest foreign investor in Russia, when he exposed the corruption in Russian state-owned companies. Suddenly, he was denied entry to the country and declared “a threat to national security.”

After Browder’s lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, uncovered a massive fraud committed by the Russian government and testified against state officials involved in the fraud, Magnitsky was imprisoned without trial, tortured, denied healthcare and died while in custody.

Since then, Browder has worked tirelessly to help pass the Sergei Magnitsky Accountability Act, which places targeted visa bans and asset freezes on human rights abusers and corrupt officials. First passed in the U.S., similar versions have since passed in Canada, the United Kingdon, the Baltic states, the European Union and Australia thanks to Browder’s tireless work.

Now the CEO of Hermitage Capital Management and the Head of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign, Browder is also a successful writer. His first book, Red Notice, became a New York Times bestseller. Now, he’s coming to Tulsa to discuss his second thrilling chronicle of being Vladimir Putin’s number one enemy, Freezing Order.

Any Given Child Returns

Tulsa is one of a handful of cities across the nation participating in the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child program. In partnership with Tulsa Public Schools, the Mayor’s Office, and 11 additional partner arts organizations in Tulsa, we ensure Tulsa students have at least nine live arts experiences by the time they reach high school.

The grade we get to work with is where it all starts: kindergarten. We invite every single kindergartner in Tulsa Public Schools into our building each year to enjoy a free theatrical experience. For most, it is their first time in our building and the first time ever seeing a live show on stage.

This year, the kiddos will get to see and take part in Aesop’s Greatest Hits by Jason Cannon. The fun, interactive take on the classic tales includes The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Tortoise and the Hare, and more. These beloved stories have been teaching important lessons for generations, but this show is all about kindergartners and their tastes in 2023.

Everything about the production, from the language used to the references, costumes and scenic design, is meant to be relevant to these kids and how they think, process and learn. We’ve even woven in Spanish throughout the script for our bilingual learners.

MEET THE ACTORS

This year, the show features three local Tulsa actors, Autumn Villanueva, Nicole Billups and Travis Guillory. Autumn is Tulsa born and raised. She is fluent in both English and Spanish, is currently a before- and after-care teacher studying to be a travel teacher, and has been performing since she was four years old. Nicole is a theatre performance graduate from the University of Tulsa, with everything from Shakespeare to Sondheim under her belt. Travis comes to us from Louisiana but is well-known and easily recognizable, having been on just about every Tulsa stage possible.

Any Given Child week is a favorite amongst the TPAC staff. The excitement of hundreds of little ones flowing through the doors, the gasps when they see a stage for the first time, and the laughter and chatter as they leave is unparalleled. We can’t wait!

Never made it to London’s West End to enjoy British theatre? Never fear! Tulsa’s own World Stage Theatre Company is bringing British theatre to us!

For one night only, Scrambled Egg Theatre Company from London, England, will bring A Man of No Importance to the Liddy Doenges Theatre, one of our downstairs theatres.

Norman — a man of no importance — works as a cleaner at MI6, the headquarters of British Intelligence. He dreams of becoming a secret agent like James Bond. At work he is ignored and mistreated by colleagues until a strange series of events cause him to discover a secret and dangerous plot.

The production is set to a musical score inspired by spy and secret agent movies of the 1960s and ‘70s. And, just to make it a bit more interesting, the show doesn’t have a single spoken word in it. The story is delivered through the physicality of five actors, using an improvised ad-hoc gibberish language

and a sophisticated soundtrack. Are you thinking about a certain silent man named Bean because we definitely are.

The piece is a spoof of classic secret agent movies with numerous visual gags and comic sequences. It features an accident-prone wannabe agent on a mission to save MI6 who generates chaos, mishap and romantic adventure.

Not many do physical spoof comedy like the British, so what better way to see this hilarious caper than performed by some chaps visiting from London?

PARKING Convenient underground parking is located west of the building, accessed from Second Street. Event parking also is available in several lots across the street to the east and south of the TPAC.

ADMISSION AND LATE SEATING Lobby doors open two hours prior to an event. Chapman Music Hall doors normally open 30 minutes prior to curtain. The remaining theaters open 30 minutes before curtain. Late seating is at the discretion of each sponsoring organization. Latecomers may be temporarily held out of the theater or asked to take seats at the back if available.

TICKET OFFICE HOURS are Monday through Friday 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition to regular hours, it opens two hours prior to curtain for events scheduled in Chapman Music Hall. The Second Street ticket office, 110 E. Second Street on the north side of the building, opens two hours prior to each curtain for tickets to events scheduled that day in John H. Williams Theatre, Liddy Doenges Theatre or Charles E. Norman Theatre.

All Performing Arts Center facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities. Please ask about wheelchair-accessible seating when purchasing your ticket. Parking is located on the street level of the parking garage near the TPAC elevators. Use the south elevator to reach Chapman Music Hall. Restroom facilities are located in the Third Street Lobby for Chapman Music Hall events, and adjacent to the John H. Williams Theatre Lobby for events in the TPAC’s other theaters. The TPAC has a Listen Technologies RF system to assist the deaf and hard of hearing. It is available at coat check for Chapman Music Hall events.
