TPAC update

We have such exciting news for you! But we can’t tell you what it is quite yet. Suffice it to say, we’ve been hard at work cooking up another community program to celebrate more of the talent and art our community has to offer. This program, most recently launched in Georgia, will showcase original works from 50 prominent contemporary Black playwrights across America with the aim to engage high school students in grades 9–12 in thoughtprovoking exploration of modern-day themes while fostering confidence in expressing their voices.

Like The Discovery Awards, this program will have participants go through three stages of competition— preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals—with the preliminary round occurring at their respective school/program and the semi-final and final rounds occurring at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center!

We are so proud to bring this program to Oklahoma and join the other partner programs around the country in Massachusetts, Texas, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Washington, Michigan, and Missouri. Keep an eye out for the formal announcement later this year!

Mike Birbiglia: Please Stop the Ride Tour

Mike Birbiglia is a comedian, writer, director, and actor who has performed his award-winning solo shows worldwide — from the Sydney Opera House to the West End of London to Broadway. His five solo shows Sleepwalk with Me, My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, Thank God for Jokes, The New One, and The Old Man & The Pool enjoyed successful runs on and off Broadway and became hit Netflix comedy specials.

Dawn Porter

Dawn Porter has emerged as a leader in the art of documentary storytelling. Gideon’s Army, her first documentary as a budding director, followed the lives of three Black public defenders working in the South. Critically acclaimed, it won an award at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for an Emmy.

Choir Boy, which is being brought to our stages by World Stage Theatre Company, is described like this in the synopsis: “The Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys is dedicated to the creation of strong, ethical black men. Pharus wants nothing more than to take his rightful place as leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. Can he find his way inside the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key? Choir Boy is an exploration of the intersection of race and sexuality through brilliant storytelling, music, and syncopated step dancing.”

Originally slated for a late January start, this beautiful, moving play was unexpectedly postponed. The man who had cast and was actively directing the show Justin Daniels passed away suddenly and unexpectedly days before Christmas.

With the loss of Daniels, the Tulsa theatre community lost so much more than a director.

Daniels was a man like few others. He was a mentor, an actor, a teacher, a singer and an uplifter. He was someone who made a difference in the lives of those around him by being a bright, optimistic light. He was a man who raised his voice in both inspiring speeches and stirring song. Leaving behind a wife and young children, his loss has been a difficult one for the community he left behind.

David Harris was originally supposed to act in and help with the step dancing in Choir Boy. After Daniels’ tragic passing, he has stepped in to help direct and lead the cast. Doing so was an easy choice for Harris. He says: “This story really grabbed Justin because it really challenges some of the conversations we have been used to hearing in the

church, used to hearing in the black community. ... That is something that theatre does for us. It gives us the opportunity to open our eyes and our minds and to see a perspective that may not be our own. It allows us to challenge our perspectives, to maybe embrace our perspectives or, maybe, abandon our perspectives.”

The lead character, Pharus, struggles to fit into his religious school as a young gay man. Harris continues: “Justin and I both have

strong faith roots, so we had a conversation around that — about how people, all people deserve a safe space. [Pharus] deserves to be respected. He deserves to be protected. He deserves to have a place where he can thrive and grow. My views may be different, but I will not be the place where he will be persecuted. And that is what Justin and I embraced about this story is that all people deserve the dignity and respect of humanity.”

Harris notes that art is one of humanity’s ways to reflect on themselves and their communities, their roles in those communities, and how each one of us can make ourselves and our communities better.

“We want to make sure that we honor Justin with this performance, and I hope people see that,” says Harris. He adds: “But, even more, it is our way of wrapping our arms around his family and embracing them and our way of keeping his name and legacy alive. We’re excited and honored and humbled to be able to carry that mantle.”

“That is something that theatre does for us. It gives us the opportunity to open our eyes and our minds and to see a perspective that may not be our own. It allows us to challenge our perspectives, to maybe embrace our perspectives or, maybe, abandon our perspectives.”

Last year’s Orbit Arts Festival was such a huge success, we’re bringing it back this year! We started the festival to celebrate that the Tulsa area is absolutely overflowing with incredible talent! From actors to dancers, singers, instrumentalists and more, our community has so much to offer. This year, this incredible celebration will take place on April 20!

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that Saturday, the doors to our 2nd Street lobbies and theatres will be open wide to admit the public to this FREE event. Every space in that half of our theatre, and even the sidewalks outside, will be brimming with activities, workshops, entertainers and more.

PARKING Convenient underground parking is located west of the building, accessed from Second Street. Event parking also is available in several lots across the street to the east and south of the TPAC.

ADMISSION AND LATE SEATING Lobby doors open two hours prior to an event. Chapman Music Hall doors normally open 30 minutes prior to curtain. The remaining theaters open 30 minutes before curtain. Late seating is at the discretion of each sponsoring organization. Latecomers may be temporarily held out of the theater or asked to take seats at the back if available.

TICKET OFFICE HOURS are Monday through Friday 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition to regular hours, it opens two hours prior to curtain for events scheduled in Chapman Music Hall. The Second Street ticket office, 110 E. Second Street on the north side of the building, opens two hours prior to each curtain for tickets to events scheduled that day in John H. Williams Theatre, Liddy Doenges Theatre or Charles E. Norman Theatre.

BUYING TICKETS ONLINE Buy tickets at tulsapac.com using VISA, DISCOVER or MasterCard. Print your tickets at home or pull them up on your mobile device using the print at home option. Tickets will be scanned by ushers at the door.

EXCHANGES The ticket office gladly exchanges tickets to events with more than one performance, subject to certain guidelines. Otherwise, all sales are final.

TOURS Group discounts are available. Please call 918-5967109 for group sales assistance. Tours of the TPAC are offered free of charge and last approximately 45–60 minutes. Arrangements may be made by calling 918-596-7122.

SERVICES FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

All Performing Arts Center facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities. Please ask about wheelchair-accessible seating when purchasing your ticket. Parking is located on the street level of the parking garage near the TPAC elevators. Use the south elevator to reach Chapman Music Hall. Restroom facilities are located in the Third Street Lobby for Chapman Music Hall events, and adjacent to the John H. Williams Theatre Lobby for events in the TPAC’s other theaters. The TPAC has a Listen Technologies RF system to assist the deaf and hard of hearing. It is available at coat check for Chapman Music Hall events. Ask the house manager on duty for equipment for the Williams, Doenges and Norman Theatres. Devices are provided at no cost.
