If you know me, you know I am constantly breaking into song. It can be a well-known song or one I make up on the spot from something someone said. This skill is handy when leading the TPAC Youth Choir. The kids find my ability to give instructions and feedback via a melody quite funny, and I love hearing them laugh at that! In our rehearsals and performances, radical joy is found on both sides. The choir members are seen. They are heard. They are accepted.

The TPAC started accepting submissions for the choir in April of 2022 and has since started rehearsing every other Monday. We now have around 35 kiddos, many of whom got to perform at the David Phelps concert, at Mother Road Market as part of their holiday festivities, and most recently at the Faith Prince and Jason Graae cabaret.

While the concept of a youth choir is not foreign, this one was intentionally created to NOT be a replacement for a school program or private study. It is designed to be a supplement to their current programs and to aid in the development of critical thinkers, musicians, and leaders.

The best part of this group is that it isn’t exclusive. There are members from multiple school districts, a few homeschool kids, and students who a end EPIC Charter Schools’ virtual academy. My point is this: the creation of art is everyone’s right and creating music together IS the creation of art!

Know of a singer who might be interested? Visit www.tulsapac.com/youth-choir for more information and to submit an audition video for next year’s choir.

JONNA

MENDEZ CHIEF OF

DISGUISE

Do you love spy novels? Enjoy watching spy movies that get your pulse racing? Tulsa Town Hall’s next visitor to the Chapman Stage, Jonna Mendez, lived those novels and movies. Remember a li le movie by the name of Argo? It’s a true story about something her husband actually did.

While many kids grow up dreaming about being James Bond, Mendez never had that dream. She ended up in the world of espionage completely by accident. Three days before her marriage to someone she believed to be an American businessman living in Germany, he suddenly told her he wasn’t who she thought he was; he was a CIA agent.

Mendez le the banking job she had been at to work as a secretary at what was essentially the American version of James Bond’s Q Branch headquarters. Eventually ge ing bored of the secretarial

life, Mendez tried to leave the CIA for something more interesting and exciting. That was until her boss told the budding photographer that she could do photography for the CIA. And she did.

Photography for the CIA led Mendez down a life path that would see her eventually become the CIA’s Master of Disguise. She’s been all over the world, pu ing her life in danger for 27 years.

Though Mendez has been retired for many years, the spy business has continued to call her back. First, she and her husband were asked to help with a new spy museum in Washington, D.C. Since then, she has been giving speeches and talks all over about her incredible life.

When she comes to Tulsa, she’ll be sharing stories like using dead rats to leave important things behind for someone else to come pick up later.

16 INTERMISSION APR 2023

She will discuss moments when she thought her career might take her life, like when a gun-toting terrorist knowingly looked her dead in the eyes when she was undercover. She will let us in on the magic behind making an agent disappear in an instant.

Come see this master of illusion unravel the secrets and mystique of the undercover world.

TULSA TOWN HALL PRESENTS
17 INTERMISSION APR 2023

Bringing Fairy Tales to Life!

Tulsa Opera is inviting us all to join them as they go Into the Woods! This beloved musical, wri en by the late Stephen Sondheim, is a bit of a departure from the usual Tulsa Opera production. Tulsa Opera’s Artistic Director Aaron Beck answers some of our burning questions about the show.

Why is the Tulsa Opera presenting a musical?

“Tulsa Opera’s revitalized artistic mission includes a new commitment to community — the community that gave us our name — which is especially important in our 75th anniversary season. Clearly, Tulsa’s audiences love music, and they love stories. Sondheim combined the best of both in Into the Woods.”

Will it be an operatic version of the tale?

“No! This is Into the Woods as audiences know and love it, with Sondheim’s classic tunes, James Lapine’s fabulous story, and some of the most gorgeous scenery and costumes ever seen on the Tulsa stage.”

What can Tulsa Opera bring to this classic tale that we haven’t seen before?

Visually, this one will be a real spectacle. Enormous, grand scenery has made its way on four semi trucks to Tulsa, and local costume designer Randy Blair has worked with director Tara Faircloth to create costumes that are a treat for the senses. We’re also proud to use some of Tulsa’s best local talent in addition to national stars.”

Judging by Tulsa Opera’s skill at creating incredible, larger-than-life productions, this one is not to be missed!
