Conducting a work by a favorite composer with whom he worked, Leonard Bernstein, and reuniting with his friend, pianist Alain Lefèvre, makes the opener one of the highlights of George Hanson’s final season with the TSO. This classic American program kicks things off in high style with Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from the 1944 musical, On the Town, George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto performed by Mr. Lefèvre and concludes with the essential American symphony, Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3.
Friday, January 16, 8:00 pm and Sunday, January 18, 2:00 pm Richard Strauss’ Presentation of the Rose/Final Trio from Der Rosenkavalier is one of the most sublime moments in opera. Friday, February 13, 8:00 pm and Sunday, February 15, 2:00 pm “A beautiful, life-affirming program with two of my favorite heroic masterpieces surrounding a one-of-a-kind American classic from 1983”– David Alan Miller. Kimberly Toscano, TSO principal timpanist, makes her solo debut performing William Kraft’s Timpani Concerto No. 1, casting a spotlight on an instrument of the orchestra most often seen from a great distance. “The piece explores the extent of the instrument,” explains Toscano. “It is a masterfully composed work and an extremely rewarding experience for performer and listener alike.”

An exciting mix of some of the most powerful works of the Romantic period with a celebratory opener from one of America’s most innovative composers: Javelin (composed for the 1996 Olympics) is post-minimalist Michael Torke’s best known work; 1997 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Jon Nakamatsu makes his TSO debut performing Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, considered a pianistic feat. A love of trains and the romance of train travel inspired Dvorřˇák’s seventh symphony.

George Hanson brings his tenure as Music Director and Conductor to a fitting and inspiring close with Gustav Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 3. By doing so, he continues his acclaimed conducting of Gustav Mahler’s work that has identified him as a “Mahler specialist” in Europe. The Symphony No. 3 may provide the finest illustration of Mahler’s musical philosophy that, “The symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.” Perfect music for a springtime evening or afternoon, it was composed in the summer on the shores of beautiful Lake Attersee in the mountains outside Salzburg with the sounds of nature, man and emotions. A great ode to nature!

His recent performance of Prokofiev’s Spanish influenced Second Violin Concerto was hailed by The New York Times as “a workout that balanced thoughtfulness and visceral power.” A new work by TSO Composer-in-Residence Dan Coleman opens the program and the soaring crescendos of Brahms’ First Symphony bring the concert to a powerful close.

Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto No. 1 Schumann: Symphony No. 2 Saturday, March 7, 8:00 pm Sunday, March 8, 2:00 pm George Hanson comes full circle with Schumann’s uplifting Symphony No. 2 from the first TSO program he conducted, February 2, 1995. Sean Chen, an American Pianists Association award winner, was also a prize winner at the 2013 Cliburn Competition, the first American to make the finals since 1997. He will make his TSO debut performing Mendelssohn’s Italianate, technically virtuosic First Piano Concerto with its rapturous themes.

In her second season as TSO Concertmaster, Lauren Roth makes her solo debut performing the concerto Gian Carlo Menotti composed in 1952, one of three mid-twentieth century works on the program. Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring won a Pulitzer Prize in 1945 while Samuel Barber’s Souvenirs is a playful, waltz-like ballet suite with memorable melodies. The program also features Musica Celestis, one of the key orchestral works by another Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Aaron Jay Kernis.

Mozart and Mahler at the height of their powers: The Symphony No. 35 is a fiery work of brief intensity. Loved from its debut performance, it celebrates a prominent Salzburg family, the Haffners. George Hanson moved the performances to Catalina Foothills High School, explaining, “It is one of the best acoustical halls in the state of Arizona.” Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon performances began at Catalina Foothills in the 2003/04 season, the TSO’s Diamond Jubilee Season celebrating 75 years of great music.
