Dear Friends, The 2012-13 season was a year of successful “firsts” for the TSO including a new Master Class Series, radio broadcasts on KUAT, an all-new Magic of Christmas SuperPops!, the new TSO Rocks the Fox performances, and participating in the inaugural Tucson Desert Song Festival. In fact, the year was filled with so many extraordinary experiences, we couldn’t possibly mention them all here, but in this report you will read about some of the highlights of our programs and about many of the new initiatives that are happening at the TSO. One of our goals was to increase our service to the community. We expanded our music education projects with a new Master Class Series in collaboration with the University of the Arizona School of Music. The new TSO Rocks the Fox series attracted a broader audience to orchestral music by featuring the work of pop legends Michael Jackson and Queen in the beautifully restored Fox Tucson Theatre downtown. We also expanded our Classic and MasterWorks Chamber Orchestra Series by adding one program to each. We welcomed many community leaders to the Board of Trustees to strengthen the TSO’s ties throughout Southern Arizona. Their guidance will be a crucial benefit to the symphony as we move forward with plans to increase our artistic, education and community engagement profiles throughout the area, as well as improving cost reduction and identifying innovative partnerships with other organizations. It is always fun to look back on past triumphs that helped to secure the TSO’s place as the cornerstone of Tucson’s very rich cultural landscape. There are still many challenges ahead of us, but we are confident that we will have many more triumphs in our future because of the support of the community, the teamwork of our musicians, and the dedication of our board, staff and volunteers. Together we will ensure the presence of the TSO for generations to come.

The eroica Trio made their Tso debut to launch the season when they performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. The concert was recorded and aired as the first in a broadcast series on classical 90.5. The Trio—Sara Sant’Ambrogio, cello, Erika Nickrenz, piano and Sara Parkins, violin—also initiated the Tso’s new master class series with the University of Arizona School of Music. 2 Violinist Karen Gomyo, soprano Amber Wagner, mezzo-soprano Jill Grove, pianist Markus Groh, world famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie and the TSO’s David Cohen and Laura Stoutenborough all held master classes attended by participants from across the state of Arizona. 1

The opening weekend program earned a rave review from The Green Valley News and Sun; the paper noted the Eroica Trio “clearly have their signature piece well in hand, head and heart.” 3 But it was TSO soul that was noted when “For Michael: A Tribute to the Music of Michael Jackson” launched the new Tso rocks the Fox series, prompting the Arizona Daily Star to headline its rave review, “TSO Gets Its Freak On with Jackson’s Music!” The series, with support from the Flinn Foundation, continued with a second, well-attended concert in the spring, “One Vision: The Music of Queen,” which exceeded its revenue forecast. The concerts attracted many music lovers who had never been to a TSO performance.

The TSO once again received national recognition in the 2012-13 season. The TSO’s young composers project was included in articles about young and contemporary composers in the Los Angeles Times and Symphony. The Winter 2013 edition of Symphony noted that the program is unique “among orchestra initiatives in planting what is often the very first seed of interest in musical 7

creation.” a third young composers project reading session was added to accommodate an increased number of young composers. In the 20 years since its inception, the project has produced more than 275 new works. In the December 2012 issue of US Airways’ in-flight magazine, the TSO was the cultural cornerstone profiled among the iconic attractions Southern Arizona has to offer including the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the Gem Show, La Fiesta de Los Vaqueros (annual rodeo), the Accenture Matchplay Golf Championship and the world famous resorts.

An all-new Magic of Christmas made its debut at the Tucson Music Hall. Featuring the TSO Chorus—Bruce Chamberlain, director, the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, the Tucson Regional Ballet, the Desert Bells International and Santa Claus, all under the baton of guest conductor Michael Hall. The show kept popular TSO traditions like the TSO Chorus and the sing-along while adding “fun and action to the old favorites.” The new Magic of Christmas set a new box office record for TSO holiday programming. 8

Support Organizations Our Volunteers and Support Organizations The Tucson Symphony Orchestra League (TSOL) members are at the heart of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s success. The TSOL warmly welcomes women and men who believe music contributes to the well-being of all people, to the improved education of children and to the economic growth and vitality of our community. Members give time and talent to contribute financial resources and manpower to the TSO’s extensive and acclaimed artistic and music education programs on the stage and in the community. The TSOL’s Nutcracker Holiday Luncheon raised more than $20,000 for the Symphony in December, 2012. The Symphony Store, which the TSOL operates during all Classic and Pops! programs at the Tucson Music Hall generated over $10,000 in additional revenue for the TSO. League members also assisted with the Young Artists Competition, Young Composers Project, Young People’s Concerts, KinderKonzerts and Just for Kids. This year TSOL estimated they donated a minimum of 6,078 volunteer hours to the TSO. With each volunteer hour worth $22.00, this equates to $133,716. Keeping track of donated hours is important, since this figure is used by the TSO when requesting grants. Friends and Admirers of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (FATSO) in Green Valley, has as its mission to increase attendance at the TSO’s Friday evening concerts. They accomplished that this season by attending five concerts: Divine Dvořák, Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto, Romantic Brahms, Verdi’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Pastoral. FATSO provides bus transportation to and from the concerts making it more convenient and safer for those who do not want to drive to the city at night. Members also go out to dinner before each concert.

The SaddleBrooke Symphony Guild (SSG) provides residents the opportunity to strengthen the community’s awareness and support of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Guild members attended Romeo & Juliet/West Side Story, Tchaikovsky’s First Concerto, Verdi’s Requiem and Beethoven’s Pastoral and hosted two ensemble performances. The Woodwind Quintet and the String Quartet performed for them in SaddleBrooke. The Tucson Symphony Cotillion Ball Advisory Committee (TSCBAC) is committed to maintaining and protecting the traditions, beauty and high standards of the Cotillion Ball and supporting the TSO by raising funds through this beautiful event. The Committee familiarizes the participating Junior Patronesses and their families with the TSO and oversees the Tucson Symphony Cotillion held on the Friday after Thanksgiving at La Paloma each year. In 2012, this major fundraising event raised $20,000. TSO Ushers There were 117 volunteer ushers on duty during the 2012-13 season to greet patrons, take tickets, show people to their seats and hand out program books. They also helped get car keys, glasses, apparel and other lost items back to their owners. There were 29 ushers on duty for every Classic and Pops program and 12 to 15 for every Masterworks program according to the TSO House Manager. That’s a whopping 4,500 hours of service!
