I Believe in

Unicorns From the book by Michael Morpurgo, adapted by Daniel Jamieson.

I Believe in Unicorns is a spellbinding and moving story by one of our greatest storytellers Michael Morpurgo. Tomas didn’t like books or stories. Stories were just for “Little Snotties”... He was happier clambering in the mountains like a goat or tobogganing with his Dad. That was until the Unicorn Lady came to town and reeled him in with her irresistible magic tales. But then disaster struck and put everything that mattered most in Tomas’s life in terrible danger. Age recommendation: 6-12 years Running time: 1 hour

“Adapted and played quite beautifully... A sheer joy.” Michael Morpurgo.

Dr Lucy Worsley With An Evening of Murder

Let me Play the Lion Too Michael Pennington’s latest book is sub-titled How to be an Actor, and few actors are better qualified to offer such advice. He has played leading roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, in the West End and abroad, and was co-founder and Artistic Director of his own English Shakespeare Company. Most recently he has played the title role in King Lear in New York, followed by the spy Anthony Blunt in London.

An illustrated tour through the dark story of our fascination with murder. Dr Lucy Worsley is a BBC TV presenter, renowned historian and Chief Curator at the charity Historic Royal Palaces. She’ll examine some notorious crimes and criminals, but also explain how murder became a form of middle-class entertainment through novels, plays, paintings and the press.

Despite his formidable business career and top-flight media connections, he has echoed the experiences of many other first-time novelists – several rejections of his manuscript. He spent weeks on creative writing courses, acquired a leading agent, and still the rejection slips arrived. But his persistence finally paid off, and his novel has just been published. He will be talking about the challenges and joys of his change of career direction with the writer and broadcaster John Miller. Followed by a book-signing.

drama David Hutchinson and Phillip Rountree for SELL A DOOR present:

The History Boys By Alan Bennett. Directed by Kate Saxon. Designed by Libby Watson

AWARD G WINNIN

Winner of over 30 major awards including the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play, Alan Bennett’s comic masterpiece was voted the nation’s favourite play in a recent national survey. Set in the 1980’s, The History Boys is the story of a group of bright, funny and unruly sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Their maverick English teacher is at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher, whilst their headmaster is obsessed with results and league tables. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence overflow, provoking insistent questions about history and how you teach it. Their A Levels may be over, but their true education is only just beginning. The History Boys is a hilariously funny and exceptionally moving play about the true purpose of education. This national treasure has proved to be the perfect night at the theatre.

Sung in English, this dark Gothic tale follows the fortunes of Faust, who weary of life, is contemplating suicide when he encounters Méphistophélès (the Devil). Faust agrees to exchange his soul for eternal youth and the fulfilment of his hedonistic wishes. The resulting journey balances romance and temptation; and is widely regarded as a magical masterpiece, based on Goethe’s dramatic poem Faust.

Songs 4 Life

Putting a spring in your step this March is a whole host of musicians whose “Songs 4 Life” concert is aimed at providing an uplifting and entertaining afternoon for all the family.

After covering weighty issues like death, love, religion and spam javelins, “The King of Edinburgh” (List) is in a frivolous mood with this show about daftness, whether the term “cool comedian” is an oxymoron, bouncing joyously on the sofa and how Herring’s whole career is a failed attempt to top a piece of visual slapstick comedy he came up with at 16. Can he revisit the joke thirty years on or will it smash his old bones?

Singing out in support are close-harmony, unaccompanied specialists The Tudor Roses and the fantastic and inspirational young voices of Hampshire Youth Chamber Choir. They will be joined by soloist, Kim Hussey whose vocal range and style is astounding. The ukulele group, Winchester Uke Jam will also delight and amaze you with their performance of a wide range of popular tunes. Finally, Winchester Rock Choir’s upbeat and joyful performance will have you singing and clapping in the aisles. Suitable for all the family. Based on the Joan Lindsay runaway bestseller Picnic at Hanging Rock - also the source of the acclaimed Peter Weir film - this exciting adaptation, by Laura Annawyn Shamas, explores a baffling disappearance which takes its toll on a small community. Who in the large cast of fascinating characters is responsible for the crime? A delicate look at crisis, greed and honesty at the turn of the century, Picnic at Hanging Rock invites its viewers to examine the people of Woodend and the consequences of their actions. Hauntingly and ironically, the play shows that what seems pristine and proper on the outside may not be free of moral corruption on the inside. The final climactic twist is shocking and bittersweet, with an impact that is unforgettable. Direction by Victoria Scarborough. Produced by Andrew Wright, on behalf of The University of Chichester.
