Indiana and IU: Making an Impact Across the Globe Collaborations with local and international students, faculty, and universities make an impact that's felt around the globe It is an extraordinary time to be in Indiana. As Hoosiers and out-of-state visitors come to Indianapolis for the biggest game of the professional football season, we have an opportunity to celebrate the many ways Indiana has become a major player on a world stage. At Indiana University, we continue to take great pride in the progress our state is making, while seeking new ways to better the communities and lives of the people we serve.

traveliN WINTER 2012

Currently, thousands of Indiana’s nurses, teachers, dentists, IT professionals, surgeons, police officers, artists, and lawyers received academic training at IU, where more than 70 of our programs are ranked in the top 20 nationally. Our eight campuses educate the more than 250,000 graduates who stay in Indiana, and whose knowledge, creativity, and ingenuity keep our economy moving forward.

12

Two miles north of Lucas Oil Stadium, site of this year’s championship football game, on the campus of IUPUI, faculty and students at the IU School of Medicine and our life sciences research laboratories are producing breakthroughs like innovative treatments for cancer and diabetes. IU leads the state in health research, and the more than 500,000 Indiana jobs tied to the health industry account for over $20 billion in wages. IU Health, the largest statewide hospital system in Indiana, is taking the nationally recognized clinical and research capabilities of the IU School of Medicine to nearly every corner of the state, advancing Indiana’s reputation as a leader in health sciences.

In Bloomington, the IU Technology Park and Corridor is home to the IU Health Proton Therapy Center—the first such facility in the Midwest— and the 40,000-square-foot IU Innovation Center for information technology enterprises and life science companies. The IU Data Center—home to IU’s supercomputer, “Big Red”—shares the tech park with the new Cyberinfrastructure Building (CIB), which brings together IU’s IT talent for collaboration in a 123,000-square-foot multipurpose space. Our regional campuses cultivate IU’s strengths in informatics, technology, the arts, health care, international and cultural programs, and the life sciences to advance local economies and opportunities. These efforts are reflected in, among many other initiatives, new programs in fine arts and nursing at our IU Kokomo campus; Harper Hall, a new, state-of-the-art facility for

groundbreaking cancer research, in South Bend; and the IU Center for Art and Design in Columbus, which will specialize in the teaching of art and design against the backdrop of one of America’s most architecturally inspiring cities. And our reach extends far beyond the crossroads of America. As a world-class research institution—with research spending that exceeded $500 million for the first time in 2011— our collaborations with international students, faculty, and universities make an impact that is felt around the globe. We welcome you to celebrate all that Indiana has to offer and to partner with IU in making our beloved state an even better place to live.

The INhome [short for Indiana home] features efficient systems and sustainable design without sacrificing modern comforts and amenities. It recently placed second in the nation in a solar house competition in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Purdue's INhome solar house earned a total of 931.390 points out of a possible 1,000. It was second only to the University of Maryland with 951.151 points. Nineteen teams, including four from outside the United States, designed and built affordable, energyefficient, solar-powered homes for the competition. Work on INhome involved more than 200 students from six colleges and schools: Technology, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Agriculture, Krannert, and Health and Human Sciences. "This is just a phenomenal win for Purdue," said an elated Eric Holt, a doctoral student in building construction management in the College of Technology and the construction manager for the INhome project. "What set us apart in the competition was our team. It just shows how well Purdue students can do." The INhome is a fully functional, yet practical net-zero energy home designed for a typical Midwestern consumer in today’s cost-competitive residential market. With the depletion of natural resources and increasing use of energy worldwide, efficient home design is essential to our country’s energy security and future prosperity. The INhome is one vision for future residential housing. Team Purdue encourages you to use these efficient, practical, and essential ideas, "From INhome to YOURhome". traveliN WINTER 2012

From June 10-15, 2012 scholars will be able to truly experience college life working with Hanover College’s respected professors, who teach a wide range of subjects that help engage and expand interests, as well as deepen knowledge of a topic. Summer 2012 will mark the fifth year of the program, which started in 2008 with just 10 scholars. The program participants have

increased steadily over the last few years as have the programs offered. This year, there are offerings in 13 different disciplines, an increase of 12 from the first year!

.................................................................................... “I would definitely recommend the Summer Academy to high school students. It helps you understand what kind of major you want to go into and if you’re interested in Hanover, it gives you a full view of what it would be like.” – Emilee Roberts ‘14 “It was very hands-on. We went out and learned the answers for ourselves, unlike other programs that already have the answers for you.” – Lauren McGhee ‘14 ....................................................................................

PEYTON MANNING, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS PHOTO I MATT BOWEN

Indiana's Super Bowl MVP's BY TIM TUTTLE

And historic connections to Super Bowl and NFL

Indiana's high schools and colleges have a rich tradition of producing players, primarily quarterbacks, who have excelled in the National Football League and the Super Bowl. The Colts provided Indiana's greatest memory by winning Super Bowl XLI by defeating the Chicago Bears. Colts’ quarterback PEYTON MANNING

was the game’s Most Valuable Player. He completed 26-of-38 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown. Former Purdue quarterbacks LEN DAWSON, BOB GRIESE and DREW BREES led their teams to victories in the Super Bowl and Dawson and Brees were most valuable players in the game. Griese, an Evansville native, played in three

Notre Dame's JOE MONTANA led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl victories and was MVP in three. He's one of the greatest playmakers in the history of football, a passer who could throw on the run and create time to find receivers by evading the pass rush. Born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana REX GROSSMAN was the Chicago Bears' starting quarterback in Super Bowl XLI in 2007. Although Grossman's Bears didn't win that year, 2006-2007 was an outstanding season with a 13-3 record. He earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 15 and twice earned FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week (Week 2, 4). While in high school, Grossman won a state championship and was named Mr. Football in the state of Indiana. Along with the Chicago Bears, Grossman has played for the Houston Texans and currently plays for quarterback for the Washington Redskins.

PURDUE'S THREE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION QUARTERBACKS WERE CELEBRATED AT AN EVENING OF AWARDS AND CELEBRATION ON JUNE 22, 2010 WHEN DREW BREES, LEN DAWSON AND BOB GRIESE APPEARED TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN WEST LAFAYETTE AT THE SIXTH-ANNUAL NFF HONORS DINNER.

straight Super Bowls, winning twice. Dawson was in two Super Bowls, losing in the historic first and winning in the historical fourth. Brees has a victory in his lone Super Bowl, but there may be more for the gifted passer. He's the only active player in the group, playing for the New Orleans Saints.

TONY DUNGY became the first AfricanAmerican head coach to win the Super Bowl. The Colts returned to the Super Bowl on Feb. 7, 2010 and were beaten by a team led by the former Hoosier collegian BREES. Purdue’s alltime passing leader in virtually every statistical category completed 32-of-39 passes for two touchdowns and became the second Boilermaker quarterback to be named Most Valuable Player in

League, which began in 1960. After the Packers won 35-10, critics derided the Chiefs and the entire AFL as inferior, not ready for prime time in the pro football world. The clamoring continued following the Packers 33-14 victory over Oakland in Super Bowl II. Fans and pundits declared that the AFL was years away from its first triumph, that its players were inferior to those in the NFL.

GRIESE led Miami into three straight Super Bowls. Dallas downed the Dolphins 24-3 in VI on Jan. 16, 1972. Miami came back the next season to beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 and won its second straight on Jan. 13, 1974 over Minnesota, 24-7. Griese was a three-sport star in high school in Evansville and at Purdue, where he quarterbacked the Boilermakers to their first Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1967. Griese also was the punter and place kicker at Purdue. He was a superb all-around athlete.

Griese’s leadership and pinpoint throwing ability were keys to the Dolphins in both Super Bowl wins. They preferred to run the football, but Griese’s passing kept defenses off balance. He completed 8-of-11 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown in the win over the Redskins and 6-of-7 for 73 yards

in the win over Minnesota.

MONTANA is the only player in Super Bowl history to be selected Most Valuable Player three times and he was the winning quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in four Super Bowls. Montana completed 14-of-22 passes for 157 yards and one touchdown and ran for 18 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI on Jan. 24, 1982 to earn his first MVP award. Montana was named MVP of Super Bowl XIX, played on Jan. 20, 1985, after completing 24-of35 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns in the 49ers 39-16 victory over Maimi. Montana passed for 297 yards and five touchdowns, completing 22-of-29 passes, in San Francisco’s 55-10 victory over Denver on Jan. 28, 1990 and was named MVP for the third time in a Super Bowl. San Francisco’s fourth win in the Super Bowl with Montana at quarterback was a 20-16 victory over Cincinnati on Jan. 22, 1989. Fort Wayne native ROD WOODSON holds the distinction of playing in the Super Bowl with three different teams. Considered one of the greatest defensive backs in NFL history—he returned 71

the Super Bowl.

DAWSON was the first Purdue quarterback to be the Super Bowl MVP. He led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 23-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV on Jan. 11, 1970. Dawson completed 12-of-17 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown, a 42-yarder to Otis Taylor.

Kansas City coach Hank Stram was a native of Indiana, born and raised in Gary. After graduating from Lew Wallace High, he played football and became an assistant coach at Purdue. Stram recruited Dawson to Purdue.

Super Bowl IV was a game of redemption for Dawson and Stram. They led Kansas City into the Super Bowl I on Jan. 15, 1967 against coach Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers. It was the first championship game between what had been two rival leagues, the established National Football League and the upstart American Football

career interceptions for 1,483 yards and 12 touchdowns--the former Purdue star played a key role in the Baltimore Ravens 34-7 win over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV on Jan. 28, 2001. Woodson also played in Super Bowl XXX for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who lost 27-17 to Dallas on Jan. 29, 1996, and in Super Bowl XXXVII for the Oakland Raiders, who lost to Tampa Bay, 48-21.

DAWSON, GRIESE and BREES have led their teams to four Super Bowl victories and former Notre Dame quarterback Montana also has four wins. There are five Super Bowl MVPs in the group. Manning raises the total of MVPs who have played football in Indiana to six and they have combined to lead their teams to nine victories in the Super Bowl. Indiana isn’t known as a football factory, but the Hoosier state had produced players who have achieved greatness. There could be more Indiana-developed players and, in the tradition, they're quarterbacks, too. JAY CUTLER graduated from Heritage Hills in Lincoln City, IN, went on to play at Vanderbilt and played quarterback for the Chicago Bears in 2011.

KYLE ORTON had an outstanding career at Purdue and played quarterback for the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs in 2011.

OFFICIAL SUPER BOWL PAINTING BY CHARLES FAZZINO

In Handmade We Trust BY SHERRI CULLISON

With new breweries, wineries, farmers markets and craft festivals around every corner, Indiana is abuzz with opportunities to shop locally. TravelIN’s new section, AuthenticIN, will celebrate the offerings and tell the stories of the many local producers, merchants and entrepreneurs our state has to offer. traveliN WINTER 2012

A new reality is upon us [and you don’t have to be hit over the head with an organic eggplant or a handmade basket to see it]: To sustain a thriving local economy, one must buy locally. Lucky for Indiana residents, then, that such a task is becoming easier to do.

27

MADE IN Farmers markets operating in Indiana saw a 37 percent increase in growth between 2010 and 2011. Small Business Saturday, a national push to encourage steadfast Black Friday shoppers to use the Saturday after Thanksgiving to focus their spending on local merchants, kicked off in 2010. As of its first anniversary, hundreds of local organizations were in on the “Shop Small” movement, and those numbers were expected to continue to grow.

Regionally, Indiana offers dozens of wineries and distilleries, like New Day Meadery and Buck Creek, Brown County and Chateau Thomas wineries, as well as Heartland, Starlight and Lawrenceburg distillers. And then there are the breweries, such as Fountain Square Brewery, Sun King Brewing Co., Upland Brewing Co. and more. On top of that? The Hoosier state boasts scores of candle makers, candy confectioners, clothing companies, artist colonies and mom-and-pop food shops. In short: Running through the list of Indiana’s local offerings can be a mouthful—pun intended—and behind every handmade item or homemade good rests a tale of entrepreneurial determination and a good idea.

FRENCH LICK WINERY

RED GOLD

A REAL GEM Merrill Hinshaw got his start in the jewelry business after years spent collecting stones and arrowheads with his father, Everett. By early 1960, Merrill’s collections had grown and so had his interest in polishing and cutting the stones. Hinshaw and his father decided to take a “Rocks for Fun” course at Earlham College, and with a $150 cash investment in equipment, they started Hinshaw Rock ’N Gems lapidary business in Winchester. By 1966, the business was growing, and Merrill, along with wife, Janis, began attending gem and mineral shows all over the country. These excursions to the invitation-only events were sometimes paired with collection trips to dig for more stones, and over the years, they helped the Hinshaws’ three children better understand and learn the family business. Over the decades, Merrill has learned a lot as well, he says, by teaching himself how to work with silver so he could mount and sell the unique and oddly shaped stones that the couple found. Through years of research and discovery, Hinshaw also became known as a national agate expert and, at different times, was hired by the Harvard University Museum and the Seaman’s Museum at Michigan Technical University to identify and appraise the stones.

INDIANA By early 2000, the Hinshaws had moved to French Lick, where they built a showroom for their unique jewelry, rocks and minerals, as well as ashtrays, desk sets, bookends and chess sets, all made with quartz, opal, agate, amethyst, jasper, onyx and petrified wood, among other found materials. Business, though it grew slowly in the beginning, has picked up over the years, Janis says, because “people like to have things that are one-of-a-kind. People want something different, something unusual. “There for a while the thinking was that everything that was bigger was better,” she adds. “People have finally gotten around to the idea that it doesn’t have to be bigger. It just has to be better.”

THE BREW CREW With only four base beers [a blonde, an amber, a pale ale and a porter] and two seasonal beers among their offerings, Jeff Gibson, Justin Brown and Bill Webster still considered their Fountain Square Brewery a small outfit when they opened their doors in late 2011. But the plan has always been to go much larger by becoming a major regional distributor of beer. The 11,000-squarefoot brewery the partners opened in Indy’s Fountain Square last December—they hope— will be one way to help them get there.

MERRILL HINSHAW

Next the partners needed a place to house the equipment, and they began talks with the Southeast Neighborhood Development [SEND] corporation, which had for years been making great strides to revitalize the now hip and artistladen Fountain Square on the south end of

The big idea is to grow that distribution business, provide a “hangout and drink place” in the Fountain Square locale and continue to create good beer. “We’re all scientists at heart,” Webster says. “One of us is an automation engineer, one is a chemist and one is a biologist. We work hard at bringing our talents together. We like to say we’re bringing science to the art of brewing.”

FOUNTAIN SQUARE BREWERY

traveliN WINTER 2012

After years of brewing their own beers, Webster says the trio decided to go into the business of beer after they did a little research and realized there was a place for them in the market. “There’s a lot of room for expansion in Indiana,” he explains. “We started putting together a business plan in July of 2010. We knew we’d need used equipment, and we hadn’t even finished our business plan when I heard about Alcatraz [another local brewery] going out of business. There had been several offers on the equipment, but we were able to get it out within the necessary two-week time period.”

downtown. The owners eventually secured a building through SEND and were on their way. Since starting their build-out, they’ve also secured partnerships with several area businesses that they supply with beer, including Fountain Square’s other independent haunts, Revolucion, Brass Ring and White Rabbit; and Massachusetts Avenue’s hot spots in downtown Indianapolis, Chatham Tap and Mass Ave Pub.

MADE IN INDIANA BACK TO HIS ROOTS

his parents to buy the Triple XXX brought him back to Lafayette. “Dad knew everybody who had been associated with the restaurant over the years, and they knew his passion for it,” Ehresman explains. “They called Dad and asked him if he had any interest in buying it. My parents called me to see if I had any interest in coming back and running it with my brother. I said, ‘Certainly.’”

As a teenager, Greg Ehresman began working in a restaurant that went—literally—from national chain to one remaining original eatery in Lafayette. And with Greg and his wife, Carrie, running the show, Triple XXX Family Restaurant is a wellknown and much-loved staple in the community. The history goes something like this: The Triple XXX chain once consisted of hundreds of “thirst stations” throughout the United States, with their heaviest concentrations in California. The

MARION-KAY SPICES

company had grown from the need for something else to drink when alcohol sales went away with Prohibition. Root beer had been introduced, and the stations, with only counter service, catered to weary—and thirsty—travelers who needed to make quick stops along their routes.

traveliN WINTER 2012

Ehresman came to work at Triple XXX when he was 14 or 15 years old. “It was the first job I ever had,” he says. “I started doing dishes, working as a car hop; I worked in the kitchen. I was the grill man. And I used to mix the Triple XXX root beer. I would take a couple gallons of Triple XXX concentrate and pour it into a 30-gallon barrel with an 80-pound bag of pure cane sugar. I would mix that by hand until it liquefied. That was our root beer.”

30

Eventually, Greg went on to college and moved out of state … until a chance opportunity for

TRIPLE XXX ROOTBEER UPLAND BREWERY

In 1999, Greg and his wife bought the business from his parents. Eventually, they also had the opportunity to buy the original root beer company. Now the couple serves as a major distributor of Triple XXX root beer throughout the nation, and they run the Triple XXX Family Restaurant and the Route 66 Diner, which they later opened in Lafayette in 2003. Ehresman attributes his small-town successes to his commitment to excellence in service and ingredients. “There is a resurgence of wanting to get back to where you started, to where things are comfortable,” Ehresman says. “You can walk in, see the person who runs the place and you can trust that. I grew up with that. We are the real deal. We are the owners who still care.”

Kokomo Opalescent Glass Ushers in a Bright, Shiny New Year BY AMY LYNCH

Known worldwide for its artistic and architectural colored glass, KOG finds itself enjoying a new heydey Although Kokomo Opalescent Glass has been around since 1888, the American stained glass manufacturing company finds itself enjoying a new heyday thanks to recent accolades. This fall, Kokomo Opalescent Glass was named best Indiana factory tour by the Official Best Of, a California-based company that produces television and web features for destinations

across the country. Muncie’s WIPB also visited the operation to shoot coverage for a documentary the station is compiling about the effects of the area’s natural gas boom. And in November, Fox 59 featured KOG in a segment about Indianamade Christmas items. Known worldwide for its artistic and architectural colored glass, Kokomo Opalescent Glass holds the title of oldest art glass company in the United States. KOG’s colored glass windows hang in the Vatican, United States Air Force Academy, Disney World and Barbara Streisand’s home, to name just a few examples.

KOG offers public tours Tuesdays through Fridays at 10am [general admission is $5]; private tours are also available by appointment. The OP Shop hours are Monday through Friday from 9am– 5pm. and Saturday 9am–1pm. For more information, visit kog.com.

The company was originally founded when French immigrant glassmaker Charles Edward Henry moved to Kokomo from New York in the 1880s to capitalize on the local natural gas supply. One of his first customers? Louis Tiffany. The leadership of the company changed hands at the turn of the century, and direct descendants of those owners continue to be involved in the business even now. Today, customers can visit KOG to tour the mold casting and see the hand-ladled sheet glass manufacturing process; watch glassblowers at work; and

rarely give much thought about. Through intriguing, hands-on activities and vivid images, Raise the Roof is sure to challenge visitors to examine their own interactions with the everyday wonders of buildings. Visit Raise the Roof exhibit beginning January 7 through May 20, 2012 at Minnetrista, 1200 N. Minnetrista Parkway, Muncie, Indiana. General admission is $5; members of Minnetrista and children age 3 and under are free. Hours of operation are Monday–Saturday 9am–5:30pm and Sunday 11am-5:30pm.

It’s All a Matter of Structure An interactive look at buildings and how they work With nearly ninety percent of our time being spent inside building structures—houses, workplaces, and schools for instance, it’s only natural to be curious about what goes into creating them. Minnetrista presents Raise the Roof: An Exhibit about Buildings, produced by the Science Museum of Minnesota and made possible with support from the National Science Foundation. Raise the Roof, opening on January 7, 2012, will provide an investigative and interactive experience in buildings of various types. Change is something that isn’t always noticed, yet buildings change all of the time due to weather, critters, and sometimes accidents. Wind is one constant and continual changing factor in homes and buildings—the way it flows not only around the structures on the outside, but how it also flows through the structures. “Tuned Mass Damper”, an exhibit feature within Raise the Roof will surely have you intrigued and thinking about wind’s effects on buildings in a whole new way.

as a sprinkler flood or leaf blower blizzard! Speaking of non-human, did you know most houses have many critters living in areas you can’t even see? “Meet the Mite” may keep you awake wondering who you’re sharing your house with. Some buildings are intriguing by the simple nature of their construction, as “Collapsible Dome” demonstrates; another exhibit area uses a dollhouse size model to demonstrate airflow indicators that can lead to dangerous conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning, in “Downdraft House”.

Raise the Roof: An Exhibit about Buildings is a lively look at structures most everyone depends upon, but

The David Owsley Museum of Art recently purchased the Portrait of Francis Basset [1757-1835] by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds specialized in portraits, particularly of the English aristocracy. “This painting captures the best moment of a particularly prolific artist,” says Director Peter Blume.

Our rich collection from the past 5,000 years offers visitors a dynamic experience with the visual arts from ancient cultures through the 20th century. Francis Basset was an English nobleman and politician. The three-quarter-length portrait is of Basset in his undergraduate regalia as he leaves Kings College, Cambridge University, in 1777, for a grand tour of Europe. While he was on his grand tour, he was painted by Pompeo Batoni. That portrait can be seen in the Prado Museum in Madrid. “Essentially, this is an English aristocrat who is recording his life on canvas,” says Blume.

collection draws art historians, anthropologists, collectors, and museum curators to Bloomington from throughout the United States and abroad. The core of the museum’s African, South Pacific, and Pre-Columbian collection, meticulously assembled primarily in the 1950s and 1960s by Raymond and Laura Wielgus and given to the IU Art Museum over the course of four decades, includes major examples of ancient American sculpture and ceramics, Polynesian and Melanesian sculpture, and African sculpture and masks. Few collections are of such uniformly exceptional quality, marked by such authoritative connoisseurship.

Arts of Africa, the South Pacific, and the Americas With an internationally acclaimed collection of more than 40,000 objects ranging from ancient gold jewelry and African masks to paintings by Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, the IU Art Museum is one of the foremost university art museums in the country. The world-renowned architectural firm of I.M. Pei & Partners designed the building, which houses three permanent collection galleries and a special exhibitions gallery. Approximately 35,000 visitors enjoy the museum’s exhibitions and special programs each year. The museum’s collection of art from Africa, the South Pacific, and the Americas is one of the country’s richest, with more than 550 objects on display in the Raymond and Laura Wielgus

Boutique Wedding Venues CONTRIBUTED BY LISA MORRISON

Boutique hotels, museums and other unique landmarks are a popular choice for 2012 Bridal trends for 2012 feature many “outside the box” concepts. Today’s bride is also more likely to seek out a unique venue at which to stage the memorable day. Non-traditional, theme-based décor and new options, such as boutique hotels and B&B’s are becoming a popular choice for ceremonies and receptions.

larger venues. These venue selections provide the bride an opportunity to create her dream wedding with a touch of nostalgia. Indiana has many oneof-a-kind unique offerings from which to choose. Turkey Track Farms in Northern Monroe County offers brides the staging of their special day beside a picturesque field of wild flowers and a pond. and transports guests to another place and time in American history. Other historic venues include the Showers Inn Bed and Breakfast in Bloomington. This lovely home, built in 1903, features a charming courtyard and fountain and meticulously manicured landscaping, all perfect for an outdoor ceremony or reception. Like many of today’s venues, the Showers Inn provides fullservice wedding options.

Boutique wedding destinations often provide the added bonus of landscape and décor not found at many traditional venues. Rolling fields of daffodils at the T.C. Steele Historic Site in Brown County. The mosaic tiles and warm color palette of the library at West Baden. Or, the grandeur of the NCAA Hall of Fame in Indianapolis—a perfect venue for a large wedding. In addition to providing memorable weddings, unique venues are popular for corporate functions, retreats, family celebrations and reunions. Many B&B’s and boutique hotels feature special holiday packages, especially during the Valentine season. The Showers Inn B&B offers a weekend package to include accommodations, roses, massage services, chocolates and a Champagne brunch. The Indiana boutique wedding experience can be found in just about every corner of our lovely Hoosier State.

Hoosier Hysteria BY BRIAN PELOZA

Indiana basketball comes from a rich history of names, teams and events Indiana didn’t become known as a basketballcrazed state by accident. It comes from a rich history of names, teams and events. No better example than the reaction to Indiana University's December win over No. 1 Kentucky on a last-second 3-pointer as fans—old and young alike —stormed the court in celebration. Legends such as Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson and John Wooden call Indiana their birthplace. Indiana University has five NCAA championship banners hanging in the rafters, with three of those teams coached by the legendary and infamous Bob Knight. Butler University won random fans over the past two years, playing the underdog role to perfection by advancing to back-to-back NCAA title games. The Bulldogs’ surprising runs toward a title, of course, brought back memories of the 1954 Milan Miracle, when the tiny school in southeastern Indiana won the IHSAA state title by defeating much larger Muncie Central. It led to the movie Hoosiers, a film that signifies the state’s passion for basketball. An article in the New York Times noted that 14 of the 15 largest high school gymnasiums are found in Indiana, with New Castle’s Fieldhouse and its 9,325 seating capacity topping the list.

traveliN WINTER 2012

Exciting and winning basketball can be found in all areas of the state, from high school to college.

I.U. is off to its best start since the 2002-03 season, thanks in large part to freshman phenom center Cody Zeller, the reigning Indiana Mr. Basketball. The highly-touted recruit hasn’t disappointed, leading the team in scoring and rebounding. Butler has lost two players early to the NBA in recent seasons—Gordon Hayward was

drafted by Utah in 2010 and Shelvin Mack was picked by Washington earlier this year. While they’ve suffered some early-season losses, the Bulldogs traditionally tend to be a team that plays its best at the end of the year. Purdue is celebrating a renovated Mackey Arena this season, which underwent $82 million improvements that added luxury seats, dining areas, offices and practice facilities. Robbie Hummel will likely ensure the Boilermakers enjoy a winning season. The fifthyear senior returns after suffering two torn ACL injuries the past two years. Hummel, from Valparaiso, was voted to the preseason All-Big Ten team, despite not playing a game in nearly 18 months. Notre Dame won its first four games, but a season-ending injury to standout TimAbromaitis has led to depth problems for the Irish. Solid basketball can be found on every end of the state, as Valparaiso University and Indiana State University have each pulled early-season upsets and have provided NCAA upset specials in the past. It all adds up to a season where many fans in Indiana will be paying close attention to the action on basketball courts over the next several months.

Muncie’s abundant cultural assets include museums, galleries, performing arts venues, art instruction, art in public spaces, festivals, and art related businesses. Our most well-known venues are Minnetrista Cultural Center, the Muncie Children’s Museum, the David Owsley Museum of Art, Cornerstone Center for the Arts, Civic Theatre, and Emens Auditorium. There are numerous profit and non-profit galleries, performance spaces, festivals and street parties throughout the Muncie Arts and Culture District. Muncie also boasts impressive public sculpture. The Muncie Arts and Culture District comprises four areas of the city, Downtown, Minnetrista, Heekin Park, and parts of the Ball State campus. Each area of the District offers distinct cultural experiences that when put together are very broad and diverse. The activities within the District highlight the beauty and diversity of our city. The activities of the District as well as cultural offerings throughout the city are promoted on munciearts.org. Munciearts.org is currently gathering participating artists and organizations for this user driven site that will feature an arts & culture directory, a consolidated cultural event calendar, an online marketplace for selling works of art, and event tickets. The site will fully launch in late January 2012. Muncie is officially one of 18 Indiana Super Celebration Sites! The Muncie Mall will be the official welcome site where visitors can go for information

about hotels, restaurants as well as entertainment and cultural offerings. Part of our upcoming Super Celebration Site activities will be setting a number of new world records, and having them recorded in the Guinness Book—including the most records set in a single city, on a single day.

Two Must-Do Events in Bloomington

Shake off the winter doldrums with a trip to Lake Monroe, Indiana's largest lake. Much too early for swimming and boating, Lake Monroe is also a bird watchers paradise. Take advantage of Eagle Watch Weekend, January 27-29. Educational sessions and eagle watching caravans round out this very informative weekend where sightings of this very majestic bird and others species make it a don’t miss event. From the cool outdoors to the warmth of beautiful quilts you will want to visit the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show March 1-3, where over 200 quilts from around the country are on display in downtown Bloomington. Quilting workshops and exhibits at various museums make this a quilters dream. These two events, plus the hundreds of shops, events and attractions put a getaway weekend to Bloomington on the must do list!

Columbus, Indiana, is ranked sixth in the nation by the American Institute of Architects for architectural innovation and design. National Geographic Traveler ranked Columbus as America’s most significant historic place on the strength of its architectural heritage. As a way to attract outstanding architectural talent to design public facilities in the central Indiana community of Columbus, Miller created the Architecture Design Program within The Cummins Foundation.

Located in Columbus, Indiana, and one of the country’s most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Dan Kiley. Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1952, Miller House and Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. The house expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and vast stone and glass walls. WEST BADEN SPRINGS HOTEL

French Lick Resort … Closer Than You Think! Two grand hotels experiencing a renaissance after extensive restorations With two grand hotels, four acclaimed golf courses, decadent spas and plenty of things to do—French Lick Resort is truly the Midwest’s authentic resort destination.

A pair of early 20th century hotels have been rescued and restored beyond their original glory as the new French Lick Resort. Both have a

West Baden Springs Hotel also enjoyed national prominence as it boasted the world’s largest free-span dome before the Houston Astrodome was built. The architectural marvel, with its 200 foot dome, made headlines when it was built and continues to receive international attention today. The hotel, once dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” drew the nation’s elite with a register including names like Vanderbilt, Rockefeller and Astor. Then, the Stock Market crashed, leaving it virtually empty. The owner sold it to the Jesuit’s for $1 and it was their home for 30 years. It then became a private college before it was abandoned for over a decade. The Cook Group, the parent company of French Lick Resort, got involved when one of the exterior walls began to crumble. Their investment grew from there and the towns of French Lick and West Baden have been the beneficiaries of the renewed spirit. As one of the state’s most valued

treasures, French Lick Resort is a must see for anyone living in or visiting the state of Indiana. Looking for a world-class escape with your spouse, may we recommend the West Baden Springs Hotel? The National Historic Landmark, with its awe inspiring surroundings, has been featured on Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious Gold List for the past three years. Bringing the entire family? French Lick Springs Hotel offers a true American resort experience with an array of personalized experiences including mountain biking, children’s activities, golf instruction, bowling and more. Either way, we are sure you will create a lifetime of memories. Quite simply French Lick Resort is two hotels, each with an historic past that has been developed into one fabulous destination for family fun, friend getaways or a romantic vacation with that special someone.

We take great pride in our unique, historic downtown with quaint stores and restaurants. But most of all, we take pride in the diverse events that we host throughout the year. No matter what you like to do, or what time of year you visit, Madison will have something for you. Are you a fan of boat racing? At the Madison Regatta, hydroplanes race at over 100MPH in their quest for the Indiana Governor’s Cup. Or maybe you’d enjoy relaxing to some blues music and the best barbeque in the Midwest: the Madison Ribberfest. If those aren’t your style, you might want to visit us during the Madison Chautauqua Festival of

Other regular events such as 4th Friday Art & Shop Hop, Music in the Park, and Old Court Days keep this river city bustling! Can’t come to any of those events? Just make reservations at one of our many Bed & Breakfast businesses … you’ll still find plenty to do! Our historic homes are always available for tours, our picturesque riverfront is a great place to exercise or relax, and Clifty Falls State Park provides a beautiful place to hike or just enjoy the view of the Ohio River meandering through the hills. There’s never a bad time to visit Madison, Indiana. Whether you want to visit for an event, for a weekend, or make it your home, I know you’ll love it as much as I do.
