The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic University, founded in 1842 by Reverend Edward F. Sorin and located near South Bend, Indiana about 90 miles east of Chicago. Notre Dame currently has approximately 8,350 undergraduate students in attendanceand has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report at 19. The university is best known for its chemistry and biochemistry programs and has the longest-running astrophysics lab. The University of Notre Dame's football team has won 11 national championships and can boast seven Heisman Trophy winners.

Indiana University [IU] is located in Bloomington, Indiana. IU was founded by the Indiana State Government in 1820 as the 'State Seminary' and approximately 39,820 students currently in attendance. The university is best known for its arts and sciences programs, including ethnomusicology, biology, folklore, medicine, gender studies and theatre. Although it started small, with only a baseball team, today Indiana University has 24 varsity teams and holds five NCAA National Basketball Championships and six NCAA Soccer Championships. It is currently ranked at #75 on U.S. News and World Report's list of top American universities.

Indiana is home to several excellent colleges and universities, three out of the top four Indiana colleges are located here in Central Indiana. There are many rankings available and ways of evaluation, the following rankings are from U.S. News and World Report.

Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana, which is 65 miles north of Indianapolis and 126 miles to the southeast of Chicago. Purdue, founded in 1869, was named after the school's benefactor, John Purdue and has approximately 32,660 undergraduate students. The university is best known for the studies it offers in aerospace, such as aeronautics and astronautics. Purdue University has 18 teams including football, basketball, cross country, tennis and wrestling playing in Division I/I-A NCAA teams. It is ranked at #64 on U.S. News and World Report's list of top American universities.

Ball State University is located in Muncie, Indiana, which is about one hour northeast of Indianapolis. Ball State was founded as a private teacher training school in 1899. Today, Ball State University has approximately 17,080 undergraduate students in attendance. The university's strongest academic programs are in architecture, telecommunications, journalism, business and nursing. Ball State participates in the Mid-American Conference and the NCAA Division I/IA in all Olympic sports with the exception of men's volleyball.

In 2009, the Academic Ranking of World Universities gave IU a world rank of 93 and a national rank of 52. Time magazine named Indiana University its “2001 College of the Year” among major research universities; Indiana is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities, the leading American research universities. Additionally, IU has over 110 academic programs ranked in the top twenty

nationwide. In January 2010 Kiplinger's Personal Finance ranked Bloomington the 28th out of the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges 2009-10.”

Indiana University's Kelley School of Business was ranked 19th in the nation, third in the Big Ten and sixth among all public institutions according to Bloomberg Business Week's 2010 list of best MBA programs.

The Indiana University Student Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the campus’s buildings, especially the older central buildings, are made from Indiana limestone quarried locally.

USA Today called Bloomington one of the top 10 student-friendly college towns with a population of less than 1 million. The university offers the latest in technology: IU was ranked as one of the top five wired universities in America according to Princeton Review and PC Magazine.

The 500,000-square-foot Indiana Memorial Union [IMU], the second largest student union in the United States, is the campus centerpiece.

The campus of Indiana University Bloomington sits on 1,933 acres and includes abundant green space and historic buildings dating to the university’s reconstruction in the late nineteenth century. On January 26, 2010, the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries were recognized as the top American research library system in 2009 by the Association of College and Research Libraries. IU’s Herman B Wells Library is the 13th largest university library in North America. Purdue University Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, enrolls the second largest student body of any university in Indiana and has the largest international student population of any public university in the United States. Purdue offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in over 210 major areas of study. The university has been highly influential in America's history of aviation, and Purdue's aviation technology and aeronautical engineering programs remain among the highest rated and most competitive in the nation. Purdue established the first college credit offered in flight training, the first four-year bachelor's degree in aviation, and the first university airport [Purdue University Airport]. Anderson University Anderson University is an accredited private Christian liberal arts college in Anderson, Indiana, 40 miles Northeast of downtown Indianapolis, encompassing over 100 acres. The college is affiliated with the Church of God [Anderson, Indiana] and is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, and the Independent Colleges of Indiana society. It has been selected as one of America's Best

Colleges by U.S. News & World Report in recent years. Anderson University's Falls School of Business has consistently received "Dean's Choice" recognition as the #1 business school for institutions at a top tier Christian university nationwide from Business Reform magazine. The 290-acre campus, just seven miles from the heart of downtown Indianapolis, is home to 20 buildings including the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, athletic fields, a formal botanical garden and nature

preserve and the famous Clowes Hall Auditorium. Hinkle Fieldhouse is home to the Milan Miracle, the memorable 1954 victory of tiny Milan High School over the much larger Muncie Central. Indiana Wesleyan University

Indiana Wesleyan University is an evangelical Christian comprehensive university of The Wesleyan Church, which has its world headquarters in Indianapolis. The University was founded in 1920 and is committed to liberal arts and professional education.

Another 12,500 adult learners attend classes at various sites and 16 regional education centers in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio and online. The University’s began offering adult education programs in 1985.

Almost 3,300 students are enrolled in traditional programs on the University’s 325-acre residential campus in Marion. The University offers more than 70 majors, the largest being nursing and teacher education.

Indianapolis 500 IMS ready to celebrate 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 this May

It’s not often that any event reaches the century mark, so the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is staging a huge celebration surrounding the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 29. This year’s event, “The Most Important Race in History,” will feature all of the traditions of the Month of May in Indianapolis, such as a starting field of 33 of the most talented, fearless drivers in the world, Jim Nabors singing “Back Home Again in Indiana,” the balloon launch at the start, the excitement and drama of Pole Day and the fun, festival atmosphere of Miller Lite Carb Day.

But this year there’s more. Much more. Month of May activities will kick into gear with the 100th Anniversary Indy 500 Emerging Tech Day on Saturday, May 7 at IMS. This event will continue IMS’ legacy as an incubator and proving ground of automotive innovation for more than a century.

Some of the best, brightest young minds in America will display innovative renewable technologies for the automotive industry at the Emerging Tech Day. The event will feature exhibition competition at IMS by alternativepower vehicles in the Formula Hybrid and American Solar Challenge series and the Purdue evGrandPrix. Allison Transmission, Inc., Indianapolis Power & Light Company [IPL] and Duke Energy are the co-sponsors of the event.

The popular Centennial Era Balloon Festival, featuring 33 colorful hot-air balloons from across the U.S., also will return to IMS that day in an event that’s fun for the entire family. The following weekend, a rich century of automotive heritage will be honored Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 during the 100th Anniversary Indy 500 Celebration of Automobiles at IMS. This event is a competition between automobile owners to be judged on the appearance of their cars. The event will celebrate the significance of vehicular transportation and competition to Indianapolis. Opening Day for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, May 14 will be filled with activity for fans. IZOD IndyCar Series drivers will be on track for the first time during the month, honing their cars to find speed for qualifications May 21-22 and Race Day on May 29. Fans who attend Opening Day for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 on May 14 can view all of the cars on display at the 100th Anniversary Indy 500 Celebration of Automobiles as part of their gate admission. Fans who visit the world-famous IMS Hall of Fame Museum during May also will see the

most impressive collection of Indianapolis 500winning cars ever assembled. Other planned activities include the world’s largest autograph session, featuring many living Indianapolis 500 veterans, on Saturday, May 28 at IMS, and at-speed laps by many historic Indianapolis 500 cars throughout the month.

One hundred years later, it is still the world’s most famous race. The Centennial Anniversary 500 will be held on May 29 before a crowd estimated at 325,000 and an international television audience. offered a $25,000 purse, attracting 40 cars and a crowd of 80,000. It was the first 500-mile race in history. Ray Harroun, driving a Marmon Wasp, won the inaugural running with relief help from Cyrus Patschke at an average speed of 74.602 miles per hour. Fisher and his partners, James Allison, Arthur Newby and Frank Wheeler, also envisioned IMS as a test track for the burgeoning automobile industry. The 500 became the laboratory of speed, safety and technology innovations, a tradition that continues to this day. Under the current formula, IndyCars reach top speeds of 230 miles per hour at Indianapolis. Helio Castroneves averaged 224.864 miles per hour in winning the pole and Will Power had the fastest race lap at 225.090 in 2010. Dario Franchitti won the race, averaging 161.623 in a race slowed by 44 laps under caution. The winner’s share of the $13,592,815 purse was $2,752,055. Franchitti returns with Target Chip Ganassi Racing going for his third win in four years. He also won in 2007. Top contenders include three-

time Indy 500 winner Castroneves, 2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon and Andretti Autosports’ Danica Patrick, the first woman to lead the 500 in 2005 and the highest-placed woman with a third in 2009.

Indianapolis is the racing capital of the world. If they were alive today, IMS founders Fisher, Allison, Newby and Wheeler would be proud of the legacy they created. Practice for the Indy 500 is May 15-20. Pole Day qualifying is May 21, followed by Bump Day on the 22nd. Miller Lite Carb Day on May 27 is the final day for practice for the IndyCars and also features the Firestone Freedom 100, a 40-lap race with IndyCar’s top development Indy Lights Series. The night before the 500 on May 28 features three series from the Mazda Road to Indy, the driver development system for the IZOD IndyCar Series, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. USAC’s Mopar National Midgets, the Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 National Championship and the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear will be in action on the .686-mile paved oval. The legendary Pay Less Little 500 at Anderson [Indiana] Speedway, located northeast of Indianapolis, is also run on May 28. The Little 500 is 33 Sprint Cars running 500 laps on the quartermile, high-banked paved track and has two mandatory pit stops, unusual for Sprint Cars. It has been held continuously since 1949. Eric Gordon won in 2010, his record ninth in the Little 500. USAC’s powerful Silver Crown cars race at the 1-mile dirt track at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on West 38th Street in Indianapolis on May 27. USAC’s Amsoil National Sprint Car dirt championship is at the Action Track in Terre Haute, west of Indianapolis near the Illinois border, in May. USAC’s pavement Sprint Car championship races at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis on May 12, June 16, July 7, August 18, September 8 and October 13.

The summer has plenty of racing in Indianapolis, too.

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series competes in the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor

Speedway on July 31. Practice begins the event on July 29 and qualifying is the next day. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Jamie McMurray won the race in 2010. Jimmie Johnson, winner of five straight Sprint Cup championships from 2006 to 2010, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch are among the many top drivers in Sprint Cup. Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis holds the Kroger SpeedFest the same weekend. On July 28, there is a tripleheader of USAC’s National Midgets and Silver Crown and ARCA stock cars. On July 29, the AAA Insurance 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series are in action. NASCAR’s Nationwide Series completes the SpeedFest on Saturday, July 30.

Indianapolis is home to the majority of IndyCar and many sports car teams, too. Gasoline Alley in the town of Speedway in the near west side to Indianapolis has a diverse group of teams, fabricators and teams. IndyCar constructor Dallara, with its headquarters in Italy, operates out of Gasoline Alley, but it is building a new facility in Speedway to produce the next generation of IndyCar for the 2012 season. IndyCar teams such as Andretti Autosport, Ganassi and Panther Racing can be found spread over metro Indianapolis. Indianapolis is the racing capital of the world. Drag racing’s premier event is also held at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. The National Hot Rod Association’s 57th Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, mecca for professional and sportsman drag racers, will be held September 1-5. Many of the NHRA teams from its professional Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock divisions are based in nearby Brownsburg, which also has IndyCar, USAC and other open-wheel teams. A city that has long been known as a place where racer’s lived has become one where they work.

For more than 60 years legendary Tom Carnegie announced the IMS electrifying moments delighting crowds with his iconic baritone voice. Carnegie was also the voice for Indiana basketball and was the announcer at Hinkle Fieldhouse when Milan High School won the historical 1954 state basketball championship on Bobby Plump’s famous last second shot which later became the movie “Hoosiers”. It saddens our hearts to say goodbye to such an Indiana Legend who passed away this year at age 91.

Head Coach Mike Mayer and the Hoosiers [No. 25 GolfweekSagarin/No. 33 Golfstat] hope their progress and effort in the fall will translate into big things during the coming months. "It's a special group of kids in a lot of ways," said Mayer. "I think we have a lot of talent, but we have people who work hard and people who really deserve to win. Every good thing that happens to this team is based on the work that they've done and these kids have worked really, really hard in the fall." The Cream and Crimson will look for leadership from juniors David Erdy and Chase Wright, a tandem that have been mainstays in the Hoosier lineup during their careers. Erdy, a Boonville, Indiana native, is currently third on the Indiana career stroke average list with a 73.40. Wright is fifth on that list with a 73.54 career average. "I've never had two better leaders on this team and I've had some pretty good leaders," said

Mayer. "Ability-wise they're pretty special as well. I'm looking for one of these two guys to really breakout this spring. That would really change the dynamics of this team." Sophomore Brant Peaper and freshman David Mills had impressive fall campaigns, competing in all five events for the Hoosiers, including top-five finishes for both at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. Including Kiawah, Peaper had a trio of top-10 finishes during the fall and looks to be a consistent threat in the Hoosier lineup.

the billing. The newcomer is currently on pace, with an average of 72.93, to have the second lowest freshman season scoring average in school history.

Former Hoosier standout Jeff Overton recently hosted Inside the PGA Tour on the Golf Channel, a weekly all-access show that gives you a look at PGA Tour life you won't find anywhere else. Some IU campus locations were included in the show. Overton, a PGA Tour member since 2006, is coming off a stellar 2010 season which included six top-10 finishes and a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team.

"He's a true freshman that is simply a tough, young son-of-a-gun," said Mayer. "This kid is not afraid to get the golf ball in the hole. He's not afraid to score and as we change him a little bit fundamentally and change his swing a little bit, he could be really special."

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the world’s largest children’s museum, with a history that dates back to 1925. The T.C. Steele State Historic Site features the home and studio of artist Theodore Clement Steele [1847-1926]. This noted Indiana artist and member of the Hoosier Group of American regional impressionist painters was inspired by scenes that he encountered in Brown County.

OPENS MAY 2011 Miller House and Garden Tours A modernist National Historic Landmark designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard and landscape design by Dan Kiley, will open for public tours in May. Miller House and Garden is owned and cared for by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. In June The Children’s Museum will feature a 310 year-old cannon and other artifacts recovered from Captain Kidd’s shipwreck, the Cara Merchant. The Crawfordsville crinoid piece on display in the first floor gallery of the Indiana State Museum holds some thirty animals that lived and died nearly 350 million years ago, on the western edge of Indiana. Featured at the Ball State Museum of Art, from the E. Arthur Ball Collection, gift of the Ball Brothers Foundation, 1995, is Paul Manship’s acclaimed statue of Diana, the Huntress. Stele of Ganesha, About 900 – 999 CE, the elephant-headed Ganesha is worshiped as the god of wisdom, good luck, prudence and the remover of obstacles, a gift of David T. Owsley via the AlcondaOwsley Foundation. At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, you’ll find the four cars driven to victory by A.J. Foyt Jr., including his 1977 machine that represents his record-setting fourth Indy 500 win. Conner Prairie Interactive History Park’s $4.3 million exhibit will open to the public on June 4, 2011 and tell the story of Gen. John Hunt Morgan’s cavalry raid through Indiana during July 1863. In Carmel at the Carter Toy Museum is the largest toy collection in the Midwest. The Indiana Medical History Museum in Indianapolis is the nation’s oldest surviving pathology laboratory, and is monument to the beginning of psychiatric medical research. Discover one of the nation’s largest assemblage of art depicting sports at the National Art Museum of Sport at University Place on the IUPUI campus. The IU Art Museum has one of the largest and most important African & South Pacific art collections in America and the world’s third largest collection of drawings by “old master” artist Domenici Tiepolo [after the Louvre, and the Morgan Library]. You’ll also

find The Studio, by Pablo Picasso a gift from Dr. and Mrs. Henry Hope. At the Lilly Library on the IU campus you’ll find a Gutenberg Bible, the first major book printed with a movable type printing press, marking the start of the “Gutenberg Revolution” and the age of the printed book. The Library is arguably one of the most important museum collections in America for historic books, papers and manuscripts. The Indiana Historical Society uses revolutionary 3D hologram technology in their new Robert F. Kennedy Speaks exhibit allowing visitors to Experience a Night that changed History and be swept up in that historic moment, the History Center is the first museum in the country to use it. The Indianapolis Museum of Art, in 2010 opened one of the largest museum art parks in the country and one of the only few to feature the ongoing commission of temporary, site-responsive artworks consisting of 100 acres of land that includes untamed woodlands, wetlands, a lake, and meadows. The IMA’s Pont-Aven School collection is the most renowned in North America and includes works by Emile Bernard, Paul Gauguin, Paul Sérusier and other artists of this late-19th-century international school. The Indiana University Auditorium is home to Thomas Hart Benton’s Century of Progress murals, Indiana’s only National Treasure. In 1933, Thomas Hart Benton completed his landmark mural cycle for the Indiana Hall at Chicago’s “Century of Progress” World’s Exposition. Also featured at the IU Auditorium is The priceless Dailey Family Memorial Collection of Hoosier Art, two Robert Laurent sculptures and the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago’s historic organ dating back to 1889.

BloomingtonKatmandu is an association of visual artists and performing musicians whose works reflect the impermanency and mobility that characterize post modern life on Planet Earth. The group will launch a Gallery Exhibition at the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center [TMBCC] on May 28, fulfilling the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to see Kumbum Chamtse Ling Temple become a hub for artistic and cultural events of interest for people of all backgrounds and faiths. New location on the Courthouse Square houses successful gallery, photography and design business After 22 years in less visible locations, photographer Kendall Reeves has moved his base of operations to the courthouse square. gallery406, named for its previous address on South Walnut Street, moved to the historic Wicks Building this January and now occupies the space formerly inhabited by Wandering Turtle.

At any given time, visitors will find a variety of Reeves’s work on display, including his well-known images of Indiana University and scenes of Bloomington and Monroe County, many of which are also available as postcards. Reeves also makes his display space available to other photographers on a rotating basis, which qualifies gallery406 to participate in Bloomington’s Gallery Walk the first Friday of every other month. Currently on display are photographs by Chris Howell, photographer at the Herald-Times, from his weekly series Pathways, which offers glimpses into the everyday life of individuals in the local community. Past shows have featured work by Darryl Jones, Michael A. Finger, and Kyle Spears, among others. But gallery406 is much more than a venue for displaying artwork. Reeves and his business partner, Stephanie—who is also his wife—operate the gallery in conjunction with Spectrum Studio of Photography and Design, which Reeves opened in 1989, three years after earning a degree in commercial and industrial photography from Ivy Tech Columbus. Today he counts Ivy Tech among his clients, along

with Indiana University, IU Health [formerly Bloomington Hospital], and numerous businesses, artists, and private individuals. When Stephanie—a graphic designer— joined the business in 2006, Spectrum Studio expanded its services to include graphic design, from corporate identity, logos, and brochures to camera-ready ads, magazine layouts, and trade show displays. Behind the lofty gallery space is a busy working studio where Reeves processes digital files and operates photographic printing, mounting, and laminating services for clients throughout the Midwest. With a 60-inch archival inkjet printer, Spectrum Studio is capable of largeformat printing for posters and trade show banners. The business also offers giclée printing on a variety of materials—canvas, photographic paper, and fine art papers—and prints on vinyl. Those eye-catching weatherproof event calendars around town? They’re his work, produced for the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau. As if this weren’t enough, Reeves has two published books—Terre Haute: Crossroads of America, and Bloomington: A Contemporary Portrait—and has another forthcoming. A Home of Her Own, featuring over 100 color images, has been a collaborative project with author/cabinetmaker Nancy Hiller and is scheduled for publication by the Indiana University Press this October.

Later in the month, Ivy Tech partners with the National Society of Arts and Letters to bring the 45th Annual Showcase of the Arts, which this year focuses on dance and choreography. Theatre of the People returns to the Rose Firebay with Project F: Freaky Folklore. Then Chaos, Inc., will make its debut performance at the Ivy Tech Waldron with Familiar. Different Drummer Belly Dancers return to the Waldron with Bloomington Belly Dances-2011. The April performance schedule finishes the month with the first Ivy Tech Faculty Recital.

Once May rolls around and IU breaks for summer, Bloomington takes on a slower pace. Locals love this time of year, when the weather is mild, the town is a little quieter and you can get into a restaurant without a 30 minute wait. But the relaxed atmosphere can be misleading: it may be peaceful but it’s certainly not sleepy! In fact, one of the best events of the year takes place in mid-June. Well, it’s actually a combination of two events, but together they make for an enriching and entertaining weekend. Americans agree that our nation’s heroic veterans, who have willingly sacrificed to preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day, deserve our gratitude, encouragement and support. The opportunity to honor our wounded warriors presents itself to grateful Hoosiers

Produced by the Fitness Challenge Foundation in partnership with the Veterans Administration Volunteer Service Office, the ride’s primary purpose is to raise funds in support of the National Ride2Recovery. Proceeds from the event go directly to assist our nation’s heroes—the men and women in uniform who have been wounded answering the call to duty and sacrifice. this May with the presentation of the second annual Ride2Recovery—Crane CycleFest to be held at the Crane Naval Base in Crane, Indiana, 20 miles southwest of Bloomington on Saturday, May 21, 2011. Until World War II, the Crane Naval Base was designated as a national forest. During the war, it housed an ammunition manufacturing and storage facility. Nearly all of its 100-square miles of forest has been preserved. The site has received numerous environmental awards from the Department of Natural Resources. The 2011 Crane CycleFest ride offers courses of 15, 30, 50 and 65 miles, all winding through the beautifully forested Crane Naval

Gyros at Falafels are made each day from fresh cuts of beef and lamb unlike most "gyros" which are made from pre-processed chunks of meat that restaurants plop onto their vertical rotisserie. The restaurant owners have developed a blend of 12 herbs and spices which are used to season the fresh cuts of beef and lamb, making for a delicious treat. It is served with a creamy tzatziki sauce, and the reception has been so wonderful that it is quickly becoming their most popular fare. A little known fact is that Falafels also operates a small scale bake shop on site, supplying local restaurants and grocery stores. “We take popular street food from the Middle East and serve it fresh in the only full service restaurant of its kind in the area,” says Victor Varela who oversees the operations of the restaurant.

Located in Columbus, Indiana, and one of the country’s most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist residences, Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape design by Dan Kiley. Members of the Miller family donated the house and gardens, along with many of its original furnishings, to the Indianapolis Museum of Art [IMA] in 2009. Additionally, members of the Miller family and the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation have donated $5 million to establish an endowment for the house and surrounding grounds. The IMA is working with the Columbus Area Visitors Center to offer public guided tours of the house and gardens beginning in May 2011. Visitors can purchase tickets online. Miller House and Garden is owned and cared for by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Tours at Miller House and Garden are made possible through the Columbus Area Visitors Center.

“Miller House showcases the work of leading 20th-century architects and designers and we believe that it’s important to preserve this internationally known jewel in the Columbus, Indiana, community,” said Maxwell L. Anderson, the Melvin & Bren Simon Director and CEO of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. “We look forward to making this significant Modernist landmark available to the public.” Columbus, Indiana, is ranked sixth in the nation by the American Institute of Architects for architectural innovation and design. National Geographic Traveler ranked Columbus as America’s most significant historic place on the strength of its architectural heritage. As a way to attract outstanding architectural talent to design public facilities in the central Indiana community of Columbus, Miller created the Architecture Design Program within The Cummins Foundation. Miller met Eero Saarinen during the construction of the First Christian Church in Columbus, which was designed by Saarinen’s father Eliel. Eero Saarinen helped Miller design the Architecture Design Program and recruit rising young architectural talent to participate in the 1950s. In addition to the Cummins Foundation’s Architecture Design

Program, which funded excellent design for public facilities, Cummins, other businesses and many churches in Columbus adopted the same strategy of using good design to create a more economically vibrant and livable city. Today there are more than 70 buildings by noted modern architects—such as I. M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, Robert Venturi, Richard Meier, John Carl Warnecke and Harry Weese—in the city, as well as public art works by internationally renowned architects and artists.

Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1952, Miller House and Garden was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000. The house expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and vast stone and glass walls. The rooms, configured beneath a grid pattern of skylights supported by cruciform steel columns, are filled with strong colors and playful patterns. Amid the residence’s large geometric gardens,

its grandest feature is an allée of honey locust trees that runs along the west side of the house. The Miller House was the first designated National Historic Landmark listed with a stillliving landscape architect that also was still occupied by its original owners at the date of its designation.

An annual celebration of the rich history of the mighty Wabash River, held in Tapawingo Park in West Lafayette. The market attracts between 500 and 750 patrons each week, and special events are held once a month. The annual Strawberry Shortcake Day will be Saturday, May 21, when they give away free strawberry shortcake to patrons while supplies last. The market will celebrate its 14th year this summer and is located at the corner of Main and Hawthorne streets in downtown Zionsville.
