Publisher’s Letter

The Travel Indiana team has been busy gathering up lots of great information to help you plan your fall and holiday adventures, and we start with our cover story which is chock full of ideas on holiday-inspired getaways. Plan some overnight stays around live performances, special events, and shopping trips. Want to have a fun weekend creating homemade holiday gifts? You’ll read about it in this issue.

Our story on “Indiana’s Historic Theaters” is a journey back in time, when many of these venues served as civil war veterans halls and Art Deco movie houses. Today, you can enjoy big-name entertainment or watch first-run movies in these meticulously-renovated buildings.

We’ll take you to Muncie, where you’ll discover “big city attractions with a small town flair.” There’s too much to pack into one day, so plan a multi-night stay to experience their incredible museums, local shopping, culinary scene, and so much more.

In this issue’s outdoor section, you’ll quickly see why a visit to one of our state parks this season is a must-do. And staying at one of their inns or lodges means you’ll enjoy cozy fireplaces, indoor pools, saunas, wood-burning stoves, and tasty on-site meals.

And we know the holidays are a good excuse to throw the diet out the window, so why not embrace the season and set out on a foodie adventure? Our “Destination Dining” story features some of Indiana’s best reasons to plan a trip around some very special eateries.

And as always, be sure and check out our website, travelindiana.com, for even more trip ideas.

Happy and safe travels!

Why not shake things up a little bit this season? A holiday-inspired getaway will help you forget about schedules and stress, while immersing you in the holiday spirit.

Take a road trip to someplace you haven’t been—or want to return to. Savor each community’s traditions and events, shop for unusual gifts in local stores, and spend the night in cozy accommodations before heading home refreshed, exhilarated and ready for the celebrations that lie ahead.

Shipshewana is a good place to start because they have lots going on at this time of year.

“Shipshewana is always a special place to visit due to our Amish Culture,” said Sonya Nash, executive director of the LaGrange County CVB, “but come Christmastime, it becomes truly magical. Our holiday celebrations span months and culminate in the Christmas Extravaganza.”

They begin with the Lighting of Shipshewana in November, which is followed by Lights of Joy, a drive-through Christmas light display that now features more than two million LED lights displayed in an almost mile-and-a-half-long symphony of colorful light scenes. The Michiana Event Center is home to the uplifting two-hour Christmas Extravaganza Nash mentioned. The show is filled with equestrian adventures, the Noel singers, dancers, aerialists, animal tricks and more.

For a novel gift idea, visit Yoder Popcorn in the heart of Amish country for tins filled with popcorn, popcorn poppers, or gift baskets filled with oils and corn you can pop yourself.

If you’ve come for peace and quiet, the Old Carriage Inn, located amid Amish farmlands, is the place to stay. At the other end of the spectrum is the Blue Gate Garden Inn, which will put you within walking distance of downtown and position you perfectly to enjoy the performances at their theater.

The Forest of Lights at Fair Oaks Farm in Fair Oaks will be bigger and better than ever this year, and it’s fun to stay right there on the property to take in all of the holiday activities. If you’re bringing the whole family, ask to bed down in one of the bunk silo suites.

VALPARAISO – THE PERFECT PLACE FOR

Holiday Festivities & Traditions

As the crisp, bright leaves of fall give way to the first snowflakes of winter, festive cheer and seasonal fun is waiting for you in the heart of Northwest Indiana. Delight in old traditions and create new memories at the many holiday events and activities in Valparaiso this season.

Kick off spooky season by donning your spookiest or silliest costume and heading to Downtown Trick-orTreat on Friday, October 13th. Then celebrate all things fall at the Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 14th. This festival is held in conjunction with the last day of the Valparaiso Market and will feature fun entertainment, pumpkin painting, face painting, pumpkin inflatables, and more!

Put on your running shoes (and costume again!) for the Halloween Howl Fest & Run at Rogers Lakewood on Saturday, October 21st. This Halloween-themed event will feature a 2k walk/run, Dog Walk, hayrides, s’mores, music, and crafts.

After getting your fill of Halloween and fall, celebrate the opening of the ice rink in Central Park Plaza with First Skate. Be the first on the ice in 2023 with tickets to this family-friendly event that benefits the Valpo Parks Foundation. And if you can’t make

it on November 11th, there’s plenty of opportunity to show off your ice-skating skills this season - the ice rink opens to the public on Monday, November 13th and runs through the first week of March.

At the end of November, marvel at ice skating demonstrations and the magnificently decorated 38-foot Central Park Plaza tree (with over 26,000 lights!) at Valpo Parks’ annual Winter Fest & Tree Lighting on Saturday, November 25th. And then enjoy the Vienna Boys Choir: Christmas in Vienna performance on Sunday, November 26th at the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University (tickets available online at valparaisoevents. com).

Kick off December by celebrating all things festive at Holly Days on Saturday, December 2nd. Drop off a letter to

Santa (will he reply?!) and shop for gifts at downtown retailer open houses. Then head over to Candy Cane Lane at the courthouse square to ride the Holiday Express train before popping over to Central Park Plaza for pictures with Santa, ice sculptures, carolers, and much more.

Spread cheer at the Santa & Sirens Toy Drive on Saturday, December 9th. Enjoy a festive display of emergency vehicles at Foundation Meadows Park and donate new, unwrapped toys to Toys for Tots to help fulfill the holiday wishes of children in the Valparaiso community.

And finally, don’t miss the chance to enjoy some holiday theater this season! A Christmas Story will run from November 24th to December 17th at Chicago Street Theater, and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas will be performed at the Memorial Opera House from November 30th to December 17th. Visit chicagostreet. org and memorialoperahouse.com, respectively, for tickets and details.

New this year is a gingerbread house competition to add a bit of spice to the mix. Bring the family, craft your gingerbread house and make some memories. You might even leave with the grand prize if your design is judged the sweetest. (December 9 & 16; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

Enjoy Unique Dining Experiences & the Fruits of Fall in Chesterton

On Wednesday afternoons through October, Coffee Creek Farmers Market will be bursting with the fullness of autumn’s bounty. Stock your larder for the season: fresh produce and meats, speciality breads, baked goods, flowers, mushrooms, honey, all of it grown, raised, and produced on local farms.

On Saturday mornings through October, stroll the cornucopia that is the European Market in Downtown Chesterton, tucked beneath the scarlets and golds of Thomas Centennial Park. Sample the artisanal comestibles. Take your pick of the handcrafted wares. Enjoy the live music. Over 90 vendors and dog-friendly!

Have a snack at the European Market, but save room for brunch or dinner at any of Chesterton’s unique eateries. For an

outstanding selection of handmade loaves and pastries baked on site—and a great breakfast to boot—try Joe’s Bread, where it’s all about the organic flour. The Red Cup Cafe & Deli, part coffee house, part art galley, at once cozy and sprawling, serves fine sandwiches and soups. The menu at Ivy’s Bohemia House is inflected by Mediterranean, Cajun, and Eastern European cuisines; ask for a table on the patio of this charming old house or upstairs, in a snug redolent of fin du siècle Paris.

(219) Taproom —which occupies the space of a 1940s roller rink and has the feel of a 1950s diner—boasts a wide variety of craft beers on tap and a finely curated menu of sophisticated comfort food. Savor the casual-fine Italian fare at Cafe Lucrezia, whose garden patio is as lovely

a place for a meal as a French Quarter patio. Or order a craft burger of grass-fed beef at Octave Grill, named for aviation pioneer Octave Chanute, who test-flew his gliders from the Dunes and advised the Wright Brothers.

All are in walking distance of Thomas Centennial Park , as is an eclectic mix of shops and boutiques selling vintage books, women’s accessories, retro candy, vinyl albums, nostalgic toys, and more.

EXPERIENCE OLD-TIME OPULENCE WITH MODERN-DAY ENTERTAINMENT

Terri Hopkins has childhood memories of the Paramount Theatre in Anderson. Her cousins are part of those memories. “We’d go to watch the movies,” Hopkins said. Their fifty-cents would cover the cost of the movie and snacks. The theater, she said, was beautiful. “We’d sit and look up at the lights that twinkled.” Those twinkling lights were part of the original design that was created to give the illusion of a Spanish courtyard at night, complete with wrought-iron gates, statues, and a ceiling painted like the sky with stars.

Those times didn’t last. Hopkins and her cousins grew up. The Paramount grew old. And in 1985 it closed. The wrecking ball loomed. But the citizens of Anderson had other ideas. They created a not-for-profit and brought the Paramount back to life. The stars are shining again. “It’s amazing to see the changes now,” Hopkins said.

Renovation continues. A younger generation has been coming for the ballet, symphony, holiday specials, prom. And more recently, weddings. Guests often gasp when they enter, and they say, “I had no idea there was anything like this in Anderson.” They gasp again when they hear the enormous sounds of the Grande Page Pipe Organ, one of only three such organs in the country that remain in their original installation.

Near Lafayette you’ll find the Fowler Theatre, which has been restored in its Art Deco style. Built in 1940, this onestory building has maintained its original marquee and decorative elements. Here you can watch first-run movies or participate in one of their special events.

The Times Theater in Rochester works because of volunteers, who initiate camaraderie. Folks will go to an event and continue to hang out in the lobby and chat.

The Strand Theatre, which opened in 1880, offers the comfort and nostalgia of the past but uses modern, digital equipment to present first-run movies. Landmark’s Dollase said it shows how the community of Richmond views the arts. “Making it an integral part of their kids’ education is important. As their kids move on into the world, they too will see the arts as being important to their lives.”

In Wabash you’ll find the recentlyrenovated 440-seat Eagles Theatre

The Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso was constructed in 1893 and originally served as a meeting place of the “Grand Army of the

Republic,” a fraternal organization for veterans who served in the American Civil War. The interior boasts stained glass windows, along with ornate viewing boxes high above the stage. You can take tours, or take in one of their modern-day theatrical events.

Muncie’s Civic Theatre building is a Prohibition-era Vaudeville theater, and one of the oldest civic theaters in the country. The theater itself was founded in 1931 and provides highquality entertainment performed by members of the community.

In downtown Jasper, the Astra Theatre has gone through a $1.7 million renovation which included replacing all major infrastructure, expanding the stage, and new sound and light system. Built in 1936, the Astra offers concerts, comedians, movies, and educational events.

It’s hard for some to imagine that Civic Hall Performing Arts Center, a former high school gymnasium, opened as a renovated performing arts venue 30 years ago. The building has operated as a performing arts facility since August of 1993. It became a reality of which many had dreamed. Precipitated by a bequest from Lucille Gamp, cultivated by leaders in the region, emboldened by a unique community/school partnership, embraced by a multitude of civic, school, and regional performances, Civic Hall is – as it was promoted to be - “For Everyone.”

The Proudly Presenting Series is a vital part of the cultural landscape of the region. It began as an outgrowth of the unique partnership between Richmond Community Schools and Civic Hall Associates. The result has been a series of events presenting the best in professional dance, music, and theatre attractions. The series continues to maintain season ticket attendees, schedule quality performances, and conduct educational opportunities for our students - both in school and beyond.

The first events, a production of Anything Goes and concert by the Kingston Trio, discovered that a niche for the presentation of professional performing arts existed in the region of east central Indiana and west central Ohio. Since the initial offerings, over 175 diverse attractions have been presented as a part of the Proudly Presenting Series of events, serving more than 100,000 patrons.

Sit Back, Relax & Enjoy the Show AT SCOTT COUNTY THEATER

Ethel and William Luckett constructed the Scott Theater in 1947. This Art-Moderne style building was built for $100,000 and had seating for nearly 600 people. It was managed by Ethel Luckett and Tex Richards, who were married and wellknown for being an aspiring couple who in the 1930’s and 1940’s also operated theaters in the neighboring towns of Scottsburg, Austin and later invested in the Moon-Glo Drive-In in 1950. The journey of owning and operating several theaters kept both very busy as Ethel had various daily jobs such as selling tickets which were only .35 cents per adult and .15 cents per child. She also handled the bookkeeping and assisted their concessions employee in charge of serving popcorn. Tex was responsible for running the projector and cleaning the theater. With the onset of television in 1949, they began to see the changes in the movie industry and business was thriving!

After many years of success, Ethyl and Tex sold the Scott Theater in 1980 to Pete and Judy West who were owners until 2002. They continued the legacy of the Scott Theater as it became a staple in the community and an important part of family entertainment for many generations in and around Scottsburg. It was then purchased by Bill and Phyllis Duke, who had a very different vision. They took action to cash in all of the old movie equipment and cameras and later sold the building in 2006 to Ron Ross.

After much consideration, Ron Ross and his family brought the Scott

Theater back to life again. Their vision increased the popularity of the old venue significantly, converting the theater into a country music concert hall named the Scottsburg Jamboree, which was later changed to the Ross Country Jamboree. The renovations included removing the movie screen and installing a large stage which gave the venue a Grand Ole Opry feel as the back wall was made of barnwood. The Ross Country Jamboree was a huge success and had brought in country music legends from all around. Continuing on a high note, another vision is in the works. In 2020, the Ross family sold the building to John and Sarah Erdington who plan to convert the Scott Theater back to the glory of its old theater days and are working diligently to restore it to its original splendor and glory. The theater is open weekends October through December with the Edrington family showing some of the season’s greatest movies on the BIG screen!

a small town flair

60 traveliN Holiday 2023

For the past two years Muncie has held a festival called “Fire Up Dwntwn,” the perfect name for a place whose city center and its surroundings are already fired up and ready to enchant and entertain visitors. A stroll down Walnut Street, for example, will yield more shopping, activities and eateries than you can pack into a day.

Start at HeidiJHale Designs, home base of the local designer of the same name. Hale has journeyed to such far-flung destinations as Bali and Madagascar to look for the gems that she uses in her beautiful one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces that are surprisingly affordable.

“I want to make unusual things like you’d see in a larger city but priced

for Indiana,” Hale said. “I make unique pieces that you can only find in Muncie.”

Those pieces include a “namedala” – your name made into a mandala –dramatic pendants, earrings, bracelets and more. What her store doesn’t have is the stiffness and formality you encounter in some jewelry stores. Instead, she also stocks candles, soaps, pillows, cups and table linens in a welcoming environment where both of her parents are part of the staff.

Also on Walnut are Made in Muncie, where you can stop in and make your own pottery, and Debbie’s Handmade Soaps – cleansers and lotions created with sensitive skin in mind. And be sure to run upstairs to the Carrie Wright Silk Gifts and Gallery, where you’ll find elegant scarves, pillows, nightlights and bags – all made

from hand-painted silk. If you’d like to learn to paint silk yourself, time your visit to take part in one of her classes. Step across Walnut and you’ll discover the gallery where the Muncie Arts and Culture Council is temporarily housing its art pieces while a permanent location is being renovated. This group, a partner of the City of Muncie, aims to spark diversity of thought by beautifying the city and engaging its citizens and visitors. One of their projects is a sculpture that now lights up Dave’s Alley, so named for David Letterman, who went to college here.

Nearby is the Cornerstone Center for the Arts, a restored Gothic Revival Masonic Temple whose graceful spaces are now used for art shows, theatrical performances, classes and special events. Within walking distance is

61 traveliN Holiday 2023 61 traveliN Holiday 2023

the Muncie Civic Theatre, a Prohibition-era Vaudeville theater that is barrier-free and aims to engage everyone in putting on quality theatrical productions.

Also here is Canan Commons, a downtown greenspace with a performance stage that houses the free Three Trails Music Series in the summer. If you happen to visit in the winter, this is where you’ll find the city’s Christmas tree. And it’s all close to the Muncie Children’s Museum, where the goal is to make learning fun. Kids will enjoy working in and shopping at Marsh Market; driving a big rig; playing farmer, doctor, teacher or veterinarian; dressing up to perform on TV; and learning about nature in the Outdoor Learning Center’s tree house. If they’re 5 or under, a special Totspot will keep them entertained.

One of the people who is most enthusiastic about what the city has to offer is its mayor, Dan Ridenour.

“Muncie is the perfect-sized community,” he said. “We have everything we need without the expense or traffic of bigger cities. We have an incredible trail system that includes the Cardinal Greenway, which at 62 miles is the longest in Indiana.”

He said people who visit, live, or retire here quickly get to know one another and take part in the goings-on

around town. He points to the solar lights in Canan Commons and the fact that the city employs a full-time maintenance person to clean and repair downtown’s buildings and streets as evidence of Muncie’s livability.

Experiences are also here for the taking. Bryan Matheny is the owner and trainer at Perfect Fit Plus, where he’ll help you get into shape or guide you through a refreshing whole-body cryogenic treatment or relaxing compression therapy. Spend some time in their sauna or take a spin on their Peloton bike.

If dancing is more your thing, stop in at Harmony Movement Studio. Here instructors such as Michele Owen will teach you to tango, salsa, line-dance, swing-dance and bellydance. They also offer tai chi and yoga, and they welcome drop-ins – even if you’re just here for the day.

The Marriott Courtyard at the Horizon Convention Center is a good location for exploring downtown since you can walk everywhere you want to go. The center also houses the Erskine Green Training Institute, whose mission is to empower people with disabilities to obtain meaningful employment.

Hungry yet? The downtown area and nearby environs offer more tasty places to eat than you’ll have time to sample. For a quick coffee, try one of the smallbatch roasted varieties at The Caffeinery. To add a sweet treat, there’s Rosebud, just a short drive away and cleverly located in a renovated bank. For a full-on breakfast or lunch, By Hand & Fork will whip up savory eggs, yummy pancakes and much more.

Another good lunch place is brandnew Bloom, a collection of eateries under one roof. Their nachos are the best, and you can get popcorn, ice cream, and other snacks here, too. For a truly special dinner, Ray Lahody’s

Trust Your Butcher Steakhouse will have you thinking you’re in New York City with cocktails, fine wines, and cooked-to-perfection steaks. Vera Mae’s Bistro is the place to go for chicken, seafood and pasta, and they do steaks, too. Lowery’s Home Made Candies will send you away with some of the best chocolates you have ever tasted. Muncie also hosts Indiana’s oldest LGTBQIA+ bar, the Mark III Taproom

When you’ve seen downtown, however, you still haven’t taken part in all that Muncie has to offer. Some of those trails the mayor mentioned connect with the Prairie Creek Reservoir, a park with 1,275 acres of water and 750 acres of beautifully landscaped and maintained land where you can enjoy whatever outdoor activity you prefer. This is the home of the annual Iron Man competition, and you can also swim, fish, boat, ride horseback, walk, run, bike and picnic.

Also outside the center of the city, where there is plenty of room to fly, is the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the accompanying National Model Aviation Museum. Come to watch model-builders compete with their crafts or browse through the museum to see models of all kinds.

For museum-lovers, Minnetrista is not to be missed. The 40-acre grounds on the White River are home to the legacy of the Ball family, whose glass-making operations have funded many of Muncie’s signature places and activities. In addition to a museum that tells the family’s story and offers changing exhibits are elaborate gardens and historic homes to explore. This is where PBS recorded many of Bob Ross’ TV programs, and “The Bob Ross Experience” allows you to tour the exhibit as well as sign up for a painting workshop or paint here on your own. Children will enjoy playing in toy-filled Betty’s Cabin and having interactive adventures in the gardens.

And we haven’t even gotten to Ball State University yet. In addition to musical events and sports competitions, the school is also home to the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse & Environmental Education Center located in scenic Christy Woods, a 17-acre outdoor classroom. The greenhouse contains some 2,000 orchids, the largest university-based collection in the United States.

Known as “the DOMA,” the university’s David Owsley Museum of Art might also have you thinking you’re in a much bigger city. The collection includes some 11,000 pieces from every continent and 5,000 years of civilization. The place to catch a bite when you’re finished here is Roots, which has good food, a full bar and a distinct “we’re on the campus” vibe.

Surprising and exciting Muncie offers all this and so much more. You’ll find that it isn’t just a travel destination: It’s an experience.

Minnetrista Museum and Gardens is a 40-acre campus that includes historic homes, modern museum, nature area, and beautiful gardens.

Everything Old is New Again at Anderson’s Paramount Theatre

The Paramount Theatre and Ballroom in Anderson is a treasure to be sure. Built by John Eberson as an atmospheric theatre and opened in 1929, the interior reflects a Spanish courtyard at night, with clouds, twinkling stars, and statuary. The venue, having been spared the wrecking ball in the 1980s when it fell into disrepair, was saved by a group of community leaders. The Friends of the Paramount have remained steadfast in their quest to keep the venue in the glory of its past.

The restoration has not stopped since the late 1980s. The most recent project has been nearly completed expanding what is

known as “The Courtyard.” Double doors open from the main theatre to a beautiful space that can be used for adult concessions and merchandise sales during performances, then can convert to space for receptions and small social occasions. Fashioned in 1930s art deco styling, the room boasts an ornate bronze stamped tile ceiling adorned with Tiffanystyle chandeliers. Rod glass sconces made in England add accent lighting. The centerpiece of the room is a custom-designed 19-foot back bar fashioned from the era and was made in Italy. This wonderful new space was opened on September 20, just in time for the opening of the Paramount’s season for 2023-24.

Community arts organizations, Anderson Symphony Orchestra, and Anderson Young Ballet Theatre call the Paramount home for stirring concerts and beautifully staged ballets. Great acts, such as comedian Brian Reger, Marshall Charloff and the Purple Experience, a Tribute to Prince, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Michael Cavanaugh, star of Billy Joel’s Broadway musical Movin’ Out, will be gracing the Paramount stage in the coming months. The annual celebration Festival of the Trees will bring in the holidays in resplendent fashion. Visit andersonparamount.org for more information.

Come to the PARK SIDE

this fall and winter! Enjoy a stay at...

Everybody knows how much fun it is to go to a state park in the summertime. The happy surprise is that it can be just as enjoyable in the winter. Hiking and adventure are still on offer, and for being warm and cozy, state park inns have a room or cabin ready just for you.

The rustic Abe Martin Lodge at Brown County State Park will put you up in one of 84 rooms (six patio rooms included) or in one of their Cabin Suites, Family or Rustic cabins. Even if you opt for a family cabin with a wood-burning stove, you’ll still have access to the inn’s amenities.

Your accommodations will come with wristbands that admit you to the lodge’s indoor aquatic center, where you’ll have access to a water slide, zero-entrance swimming pool, lazy-river water channel, water volleyball and basketball, hot tub with a waterfall.

MIDDLE

A game of Ping-Pong in the game room might be your next stop, or maybe you’ll choose to read a good book, play a game, or work a puzzle in the comfy fireplace lobby. You’ll want to have a peek into the gift shop, too.

The dining room in the lodge is called the Little Gem with good reason. You’ll feast on such comfort food as chicken and noodles, meatloaf and pot pies as well as Friday fish fry.

Best of all, a winter getaway at a state park lodge doesn’t need to break the budget. If you come Sundays through Thursdays between Nov. 26, 2023, and Feb. 29, 2024, you’ll get two nights for the price of one. (Dec. 24 through Jan. 4 are not included.)

The same offer applies at all the State Park Inn locations, so maybe you’ll choose to explore Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park. Outdoor winter sports are the order of the day here, and with Lake James right outside your door, all you have to do is lace up your skates and get going. Bring your own gear for cross-country skiing or rent snowshoes once you arrive.

The twin-track refrigerated toboggan run here is one of the longest and tallest in the United States at 1,780 long and 90 feet tall. Sledders have been known to reach 42 miles per hour.

Potawatomi Inn offers both rooms and cabins, with popular patio rooms on the first floor just steps from the lake and beach. When you’ve just come in from the cold you’ll appreciate the indoor pool, hot tub and sauna. Also offered for your

enjoyment are a fitness center, game room, craft room and library. Read the book you select here, on the enclosed sun porch or in one of the lounges, some with fireplaces.

The menu at the Lakeview Restaurant offers the same homey dishes as those in Brown County. For more casual snacking, pick up a sandwich and some ice cream in the Courtyard Café

Whichever you decide, getting away to a state park in the winter will delight you. It could turn out to be the best vacation ever.

The Renaissance of the Ricks

When you take a nighttime stroll along Main Street in downtown Greenfield, your path will eventually cross a beautiful art deco theater whose marquee glows brightly into the night. The H. J. Ricks Centre for the Arts, located at 122 W. Main St., has been a fixture in Greenfield for many years. Built in 1946 to be the first air-conditioned theater in town, the Ricks started out as a movie theater - originally called the Weil. Later it was known as the Cinemas East and then the Village Theater. It has been divided into two theaters and brought back together. It went through a major renovation in 2006 to become a performing arts facility, and now it is seeing a true renaissance after a seat upgrade (seats with cup holders), new paint, and a new lease on life.

The H. J. Ricks Centre hosts many different events and has a very active schedule with a variety of productions. It has become the place to hear a variety of local and regional musical talent. It is also seen performances by three different theater companies. It has hosted comedians, speakers, film festivals and old movies. The H. J. Ricks Centre was a gift to the community by long time theater owner, Allen Strahl in honor of his father-in-law - H. J. Ricks. Check out this beautiful theater and

the variety of productions that it hosts. The H. J. Ricks Centre for the Arts can be rented by anyone wanting to put on an event for a fundraiser, a recording session, recital, or for a public performance. It can also be used for birthday parties, anniversaries, weddings or other events. You can find out more about the H. J. Ricks Centre for the Arts by going to their website at www.rickscentre.com or find out about their public events by going to the Hancock County Tourism Event Calendar at www.visitinhancock.org

Destination Dining

Whether you call it culinary tourism or destination dining, the ritual of traveling to discover great food is one of the hottest reasons to road trip. Plan a weekend adventure and roam the back roads and tiny towns of Indiana in search of your next favorite meal!

Chef Matt Harakal’s earliest memories of being in the kitchen include a little bit of mischief. “I would grab things out of the pantry and try to cook them and imitate what I saw my relatives doing,” he recalled. “It didn’t really turn out and I usually got in trouble.”

After three decades as a professional chef, however, Harakal’s cooking now gets rave reviews by his loyal customers. His restaurant, 21 North Eatery & Cellar on the square in downtown Martinsville, has become a destination for foodies in search of their next favorite meal, highlighting the restaurant’s excellent selection of fresh ingredients from local farmers and fine wines from regional purveyors in France, Italy, and Spain.

The latest feature at the restaurant, The Chef’s Table, is an outlet for Harakal and his executive chef, Steve Martinez, to showcase their creativity as their guests get a behind-thescenes experience at the restaurant. The intimate room, which has its own bar separate from the main restaurant, recreates the ambience of a speakeasy.

“When I took over as the owner, I wanted to have something more personable where the chefs were cooking right in front of everyone— where you’re not in a crowded restaurant, where you can just have a private room to yourself,” he explained. “We tailor make everything right there. It’s a great interaction between us and our customers, our friends.”

While some dining destinations aren’t as roomy or as easy to find as 21 North, that doesn’t deter hungry travelers. Take Bonge’s Tavern, for example, in Madison County. The legendary food has been luring diners out to the “middle of nowhere” for a quarter of a century. Dishes like the Perkinsville Pork or Harger Duck are favorites from the restaurant’s iconic, but compact, menu.

Speaking of traditions, Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette holds the title of “Indiana’s First and Oldest Drive-In.” Its most popular item, The Duane Purvis All American, a quarter-pound ground sirloin patty topped with creamy peanut butter, American cheese, and all the fixings, has been featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. “We believe we’re the first restaurant with a peanut butter burger, dating back to 1934 after Duane Purvis was a student at Purdue,” said Carrie Ehresman, who has owned the restaurant with her husband, Greg, since 1999. And in case you’re wondering, Triple XXX is the root beer brand served at the

restaurant—one of the oldest brands in the United States.

Another Diners, Drive-ins and Dives alumnus is Zydeco’s in Mooresville. As the name suggests, this restaurant is all about New Orleans, from the décor to the dishes. Customers come for the authentic Cajun fare, from jambalaya and gumbo to crawfish etouffee and alligator, and they leave with a little more spice in their lives.

In the tiny town of Fairmount, Grains & Grill offers travelers a fine dining experience just off Indiana State Road 9. In 2015, owners Joanie and Barry Howard converted the former John Deere dealership into a charming restaurant. The business has also expanded in recent years to include a popular pizzeria and brewery, Bad Dad Brewery, located on the same property.

Up the road in Roanoke, you’ll find Joseph Decuis, a true farm-to-fork restaurant. The owners believe in the

farm-to-fork experience so much, they established their own farm, where they raise legendary Japanese beef— Waygu—as well as free range hens, Mangalitza pigs, goats, sheep, turkeys, herbs, and vegetables.

For another excellent farm-to-fork experience, try The Farmhouse Restaurant at Fair Oaks Farms, which features fresh ingredients grown and harvested at Fair Oaks Farms and other farms within the region. Bring the kids and experience all the farm activities Fair Oaks Farms has to offer while you’re there.

In the mood for small plates in a beautiful, artsy setting? Head to Wabash’s 4 Partners in Crime, where both the food and the walls feature an artistic flair. And while you’re in town, check out Moon Dog , a hip cocktail bar and restaurant offering a fresh, eclectic menu.

For a unique dining experience in downtown Muncie, make a reservation at Ron Lahody’s Trust Your Butcher Steakhouse. Eclectic décor mixes with some of the best fresh-cut steaks around. Their two-pound, bone-in tomahawk ribeye is a must-try for true carnivores.

Fort Wayne’s food scene is a hidden gem, where diners and hot dog stands mix with up-and-coming cocktail destinations. It’s here that culinary creatives redefine Midwestern cuisine, combining generations-old recipes with the flavors of the world. Their annual restaurant week, Savor Fort Wayne (January 17-28) offers the perfect time to come explore.

Arni’s has been serving fresh and delicious food for over half a century. The family-owned restaurant has 17 locations in Indiana, and serves their famous thin crust pizza, salads, subs, sandwiches and more. The Arni’s experience is a true Indiana restaurant tradition.

dinner: The Blue Gate Restaurant and Bakery in Shipshewana and Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury. You won’t leave hungry at either of these two well-loved Amish restaurants!

Foodies are celebrating the muchanticipated opening of Union Hall, an American fare restaurant located in the historic American Factory in downtown Valparaiso. The restaurant is part of Journeyman Distillery ’s new location which also features Sea of Monsters brewery, retail area, and timeless event spaces.

One of the best ways to plan your culinary adventure is to check out Indiana Foodways Alliance food trails. This non-profit organization supports locally-owned restaurants throughout the state, and promotes 21 trails. Popular are the Hoosier Pie Trail, Tenderloin Lovers Trail, and the Sweet Temptations Trail.
