Peace One Day Letter

October 23, 2010 Dear Rock Our World Friends, Greetings from Mrs. Tammy Parks’ HS Students at Howe High School in Howe, Oklahoma, USA! We are writing to tell you about a project that we are working on in our class and to invite your school to join in. The project is about Peace One Day and Peace Day, September 21. Peace One Day is a film project started by a man named Jeremy Gilley. Jeremy’s idea was to create an annual day of global ceasefire and nonviolence: Peace Day. Jeremy gathered some friends together and contacted the united Nations; he traveled to countries torn apart by war, meeting women, men, and children to hear their stories. Jeremy filmed everything to persuade the world’s countries to create the Day. In 2001 he succeeded! All the countries that make up the UN adopted the Day and fixed it in the calendar as September 21 each year. You can find out more at www.peaceoneday.org. It’s up to every individual around the world to use Peace Day to celebrate and to build bridges with people from other countries and cultures. Jeremy’s aim is reach 3 billion people with the message of Peace Day by September 21, 2012 and to see events and activities in all 192 member states of the UN on Peace Day – we’ve chosen to help him! Our project for Peace Day is to put together a “Rock Our World” Peace POD. This is a box containing information about us, our lives, and our culture (letters, photos, newspapers clippings, music and more). When the box is full we would like to send it to you and ask that you create a similar box and send it to us. We will then use the material in your box to create a display as part of our school’s Rock Our World Family night celebration and the Peace Day celebrations on September 21, 2011 and you could do the same! We hope that our Rock Our World Peace POD display will help our friends to understand more about you and your culture and build a lasting bridge between our schools and our countries. We are already putting our Peace POD together. Let us know if you would like to exchange Peace PODs, and we will contact Peace One Day to let them know what we are all doing and log our project on their website to help inspire others to get involved. We look forward to hearing from you. In peace, Tammy Parks and Students Howe High School Howe, Oklahoma, USA
