REMINDING:

Dr. Samuel Dean, long time area doctor and prominent pioneer of Leflore County, born in 1872 in Nicholasville, KY, came to Howe in 1901 and actively practiced medicine for 60 years in the Howe area. He was believed to be the oldest practicing doctor in the state. In 1951, the Oklahoma Medical association honored him by presenting him with a 50 year pin. He served as the president of the Howe school board for 25 years. He was the last surviving charter member of the Masonic lodge at Howe and served as president and director of the Leflore County National Bank. Dr. Dean received his BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his medical degree from Barnes medical college in St. Louis.

The alumni board (President Mary Gregory Parham '91, Vice President Janie Davidson Vincent '02, Treasurer Jerry (Jay) Neugin '84, and Member at Large Vicki Lockhart Jirash '71) held a meeting at the COFFEE CUP in Poteau OK at 6:30 pm on 7/28/11. The group discussed and approved the following items during the meeting.

COOKBOOK: Due to the overwhelming response from the Facebook page, we have decided to sponsor our 2nd fundraiser. We will begin immediately building a committee, planning and working to publish a cookbook. Here is how you can get involved! • We will have 6 people that make up the Cookbook Committee. Two who will work to “Gather and organize the recipes”, two who will “Design the cookbook”, two who will “Sell and advertise the cookbook”. • There is an opportunity to work with Mary Gregory Parham to “Gather and Organize”. We will be using Facebook, email, USPS and hand off methods in collecting recipes. There will be “organizing parties” that we will set up where volunteers will help to enter the recipes into a form online, edit recipes entered into the online form by others, etc. If you are interested in helping Mary organize this portion of the work please contact her at 479-739-2078 in the evenings or email her at maryparham2009@yahoo.com or you can send a message through Facebook. Mary can provide additional details and answer your questions as well if you have any. • There is an opportunity to work with Janie Davidson Vincent to “Design the cookbook”. This will require some meetings and work time with Janie and may include such things as gathering feedback and doing research, among other things. If you are interested in helping Janie with this part of the effort please contact her via Facebook or call her at 918-649-3221 or email her at janiedvincent@gmail.com. • Jane Anne Willhoite Reston and Vicki Lockhart Jirash are teaming up to do the Sells and Advertising for the cookbook! These two ladies are going to do an excellent job I am sure!! **Don’t forget to donate those recipes too. Details in the ACTING column above, however you can contact any committee member about donating recipes, all of which will answer your questions and ensure all recipes are gathered up!

NEWS LETTER: The group decided to start a monthly newsletter titled "The Roaring Alumni". It will contain four sections (R = remember when; O = organizational update; A = action needed/to take; R = reminders) all of which will be based on content approved at each of the Alumni Board Meetings. If you have suggestions, content to submit or want to provide input in anyway please contact us at howe_alumni_association@ymail.com or feel free to reach out to any board member via phone, in person, etc. *You are reading our first publication!

BBQ: There has been overwhelming feedback in favor of having a gathering in Howe for the Alumni every year, therefore the board has decided to hold a BBQ/Picnic in the summer of 2012. The date was chosen based on the same rules we apply to the Banquet date every other year (Saturday prior to the 3rd Sunday, to correspond with Decoration Day in Howe). There will be food, fun and lots of stuff for the entire family. Watch for additional details coming soon.
