Town considering L.E.D streetlights By Bailey Wright Town Times

Middlefield town boards are in the approval stages of a new streetlight contract with Tanko Lighting which would replace all town streetlights with L.E.D. ones. During its June 18 meeting, the Board of Selectmen voted to recommend the Board of Finance approve $232,379 in funding for the lighting replacement project. First Selectman Ed Bailey said he anticipates the town meeting would happen before the end of July and if approved, the installation would be completed near the end of September. Residents invited to get involved with BOE

The Middlefield Giving Garden was conceived years ago by Coginchaug Area Transition, but the group only broke ground last fall. Transition is a group that works to foster resilient local communities in the face of rising energy prices, climate uncertainty and resource depletion.

The contract includes a rebate from Eversource of about $41,000, resulting in a net project cost of $191,139.

If the board approves the funding, action would go back to the Board of Selectmen to set a Special Town Meeting during which residents would have the final say.

room to have more participation from town and I think it's a good opportunity,” Yamartino said.

Last September, the Regional School District 13 Board of Education voted to allow community members to participate as nonvoting members on most of its subcommittees. Several people have since been appointed, but there’s room for more.

For the BOE, it means a little less of a burden of work on an already stretchedthin board, as well as opportunities to more actively hear from people with different views and expertise.

Board member Bob Yamartino said there are still spots left for people to get involved, and as the board prepares for a new school year, it’s the perfect time to sign on.

“I really welcome viewpoints, different viewpoints, I don't want everyone to be exactly like me ... and I want them to have a say in how it goes,” Yamartino said.

“They were really excited,” Troop co-leader Kristy King said.

Gossner said she tried to choose native plants and ones that would serve different kinds of pollinators.

Huddleston said she hopes the four raised beds will be inviting to some seniors because they require less bending.

There have also been talks of adding a beehive to the property, which local beekeeper Allan Poole has offered to take care of, according to Huddleston.

Recently, Durham resident Tina Gossner helped lead volunteers in putting in a pollinator patch.

Sue Dorvilliers, director of senior and social services in Middlefield, said there has been an “ecstatic response” from recipients. She said about 15 people or families have gotten lettuce and peas. Seniors at the weekly group lunch were treated to fresh salads. The food bank serves about 20 to 25 families. Letters Policy

Don’t trust your electric bills When people think about “legislators” they naturally think about elected officials as “law makers.” Making laws is certainly an important and large part of being a “legislator,” but an equally important part of the job is constituent service. Many times, “constituent service” is the most satisfying part of the job.

What I learned as a result of my pursuit of my complaint was eyeopening.

I actively participated as an “Intervenor” on behalf of the public in this case and attended a series of PURA meetings to listen to what the utilities, the suppliers, the Office of Consumer Counsel, the Attorney General and the PURA itself had to say. To my surprise there was an awareness of the problem going back to January of 2016, when the new utility billing format was

conveyed the incorrect information to me on their utility bill, they reiterated “It’s not our problem”. So, the next day I filed a complaint with PURA and held a press conference to alert the public to the problem because I knew by then that the problem was not something unique to my utility bill. It reflected a systems failure between the utilities and the electric suppliers. No one bothered to confirm the accuracy of the information on consumer bills. This left the door wide open for mistakes, or worse, outright fraud.

PURA appeared to be going through the motions but didn’t aggressively pressure the utilities or the suppliers to get the problem solved, even though it potentially affected hundreds of thousands of families.

tion that needs to be rectified in the next legislative session. In the meantime, thousands of Connecticut families will be receiving checks in the near future. In light of the record of carelessness and indifference on the part of the utilities and the electric suppliers, I urge readers to double check their electric bills back to January of 2016 if they purchased their electricity from any of the electricity suppliers. Nearly onethird of Connecticut ratepayers may be affected. In light of the unreliable and erroneous track record of the utilities and the electric suppliers, I urge people to personally review their electric bills and compare the “next cycle rate” with the actual rate in their electric bills the following month. They may find out, like I did, that they were overcharged hundreds of dollars for their electricity. The Attorney General estimated that the average overcharge was $45 per month. That means over 1 year a consumer may have been overcharged more than $500. If you were overcharged, you will be entitled to a refund. But don’t take the utilities’ or suppliers’ word for how much you may have been overcharged. When it comes to your electric bill, “Don’t trust — verify”! Len Suzio is a former state senator.

different kind of light. The light's going to be more focused, we're no longer going to be lighting on people's yards and the atmosphere,” Bailey said during the board meeting.

Using the L.E.D. lights would mean the town’s roughly 350 lights would see a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 54,000 pounds. The current lights emit around 78,700 pounds. Estimates for the new lights land around 24,700 pounds annually.

A year after installation, Tanko Lighting estimates energy usage will be reduced by 103,102 kWh, from about 150,000 to 47,000 kWh. This is estimated to save about $45,000 in energy usage costs annually. The current high pressure sodium street lights are maintained by Eversource. Bailey said there are many motivations for the L.E.D. project, including the reduction of harmful emissions and lower energy costs. Also, by having all new streetlights, he said the town is assured of uninterrupted service for a long time.

(Near Powder Ridge Ski Area)

To replace the lights requires the town to acquire them first, at a cost of about $124,000. The contract with

Tanko Lighting would be for a year, and the town could decide to go with another company after that. A bid process was not required since the contract is through the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities. Bailey said Eversource offers a program to replace the lights with L.E.D. ones, but at a greater price. He also said the company has not always been reliable servicing the lights in the past.

bers Dave Burgess and Bob Yamartino were in support of moving forward with the contract. This project would not affect the streetlights on stateowned roads like Route 66, many of which have already been switched to L.E.D. by the state. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright

One of Bailey’s main concerns about the project was that the town will be responsible for maintaining the streetlights moving forward. It was determined that an outside contractor will be hired to take care of maintenance and compensation and materials have been budgeted for. Board of Selectmen mem-

VETERINARIAN SAYS GOODBYE

I’m humbled by the confidence you have shown me As I am no longer affiliated with Powder Ridge Veterinary Hospital and as I anticipate continuing to practice well outside the local Durham/Middlefield area, I am writing to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to all those who have been such a big part of my life for the past 32 years. Firstly, I must thank the late Bob Malcolm; neighbor, World War II veteran and American hero. Prior to losing a son in the conflict in Vietnam, Bob lost his left arm from injuries incurred behind enemy lines in Normandy.

Bob, however, honored the original price without question. I also want to thank Geoff Colegrove, then and still our part-time town planner, for educating and assisting me through the process to gain P&Z approval. A big shout out to the thenchairman of P&Z, Frank St. John, for his fair and prompt consideration of my application to establish PRVH.

I also owe a debt of gratitude to Deb Valvo, the other employee who started on day one, for her skills and competence and loyalty. Thanks also to my other long-time employees, Jen Brown, Becky Grant and Corine De Francisco. I will miss many of the colorful figures around town; Tony and Tammy at Middlefield Pizza, George at the post office, Tommy Yantosh at Trackside, electrician Bob

Monthei, the good folks at Liberty Bank and all the others that I've had the pleasure of doing business with. Most importantly, I thank all of you, those clients who have trusted me throughout the years, for giving me the honor of caring for your beloved creatures. It is a responsibility I take most seriously and I have been humbled by the confidence you have shown me. For all your kind words, fruit

baskets, baked goods, hugs and, yes, I'll say it, love, you've shown, I cannot put into words how much it has meant to me. It is one of the intangible gifts of this wonderful profession of mine. You are all special to me and I will miss each one of you. Thank you all for welcoming me into the community and for all the support you have shown for all these years. I will cherish it and remember you all fondly.

Quality Homecare for Seniors

I cannot overemphasize the contribution of the Brayshaws: Jon, architect and engineer; his brother, Rob, builder; and Rob's wife, Pat, the hardest working and most loyal employee who worked for me from day one until several weeks before her death four years ago. 34199-01

Back in 1986, Bob and I shook right hands after agreeing on a price to purchase the two acres where the hospital now sits, pending P&Z approval. During the following months a near-

Soon after he completed his degree Andy enrolled in Ona Wilcox School of Nursing; this decision helped spring-board him into a career where he flourished and became an outstanding Unit Director at Connecticut Valley Hospital. Andy loved to volunteer. He was a volunteer firefighter for CVH, a Boy Scout leader, Eucharist Minister, sang in the choir and was

part of the Knights of Columbus all within St Mary of Czestochowa. He also volunteered many years for the Durham Fair Association and was a regular blood donor. Andy had a great sense of humor and loved life. He constantly joked and brought perpetual laughter and joy to his wife and children. Andy always wanted to live in the country and his dream came true when he and his wife purchased a home in Durham. Andy enjoyed his yard and home and was often found working to improve both. He was a family man and loved being with his wife and children. He was proud of his children and the life he built with his wife. Andy fought early on-set Alzheimer’s for years. He
