elcome back to a new issue of Talk of the Town Magazine. Back in March 2020 when COVID hit, we weren’t sure what the fate of this magazine would be. We are so thrilled to be able to bring back our Gentlemen’s Guide at time when it seems the world could use a few more gentle men. Speaking of gentlemen, we must start by congratulating Michael Rosenberg and Jeffrey Khalaf of The Timepiece Collection. In October of 2021, they celebrated an incredible achievement: 20 years in business. Not only have these entrepreneurs proven anything is possible with a good idea, but for 20 years they’ve been a backbone business of Bergen County - sponsoring many community programs and enriching the world around them - one watch at a time. As you’ll notice, this special edition of Talk of the Town is devoted to celebrating those 20 years. Not only does the Timepiece Collection carry over two dozen brands, they also specialize in certifed pre-owned watches, and their state-of-the-art service center means you won’t have to send your watch to Switzerland for simple repairs. Futher, each unique watch you might spot in these pages is available at their flagship boutique in Englewood. Just in time for the holidays, we’ve compiled a Gift Guide sure to pique your interest - full of unusual and over the top items for the most discriminate men. It’s never too late to spoil yourself. Speaking of spoiling yourself - we spoke to a whisky connoisseur to find out what the rarest single malt scotches are. Some you probably haven’t heard of. Some might be sitting in your parent’s liquor cabinet from 1970. Either way, these bottles, if you were to grab one, have astronomical values that only continue to sky rocket. We’ll drink to that. The holidays are upon us. The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas usually marks a time of both joy and great stress. The highs of great food and better company are equalized by the lows of trying to make it all perfect. This year, do yourself and your loved ones a favor — give your worries a rest. You deserve it. Stay happy and healthy, Brandon Goldstein

Cheers to 20 Years

O

n a mild autumn evening in October, Michael Rosenberg and Jeffrey Khalaf, owners of The Timepiece Collection, celebrated 20 years of business with a select guest list of customers and friends at the Saddle River Inn. Hosting the celebrations with Bulgari, guests were treated to an incredible evening complete with a delectable sit down dinner by local culinary icon Chef Jamie Knott, along with a preview of Bulgari’s newest collections of fine timepieces. Rosenberg rose to give a champagne toast, followed by some humorous anecdotes about The Timepiece Collection’s 20 years in business - from working out of a small home office to their current location, a flagship corner store on East Palisade Avenue in Englewood.

The Lamborghini Huracan Evo RWD Spyder WRITTEN BY

RICHARD POSLUSZNY

The timepiece collection 20th anniversary edition | 18

F

rom my perspective, it rings true that vehicles say a lot about their owner. You get a glimpse into their personality and how they like to be perceived. Other times, it’s simply a tool that serves a purpose. If you purchase a Lamborghini though, you’re making a statement. That’s because when you pull up to your destination, you make an entrance. These are automobiles that are flamboyant and likely speak to people that will not go quietly — literally or figuratively. This was made readily apparent when I took delivery of the Huracan Evo RWD (rear-wheel drive) Spyder. There’s a bit of theater to, well, everything. Simply starting the car requires you to flip up a red surround, as if you’re in a fighter jet and arming missiles for launch. It’s just a little reminder that you’re about to do something special. You probably already knew that though from its look. This white, wedge-shaped convertible is edgy. Literally. Much like the rest of the Lamborghini portfolio of autos, they all sort of have this design inspiration that’s reminiscent of a B2 bomber. While it can be a bit overbearing if you opt for a shouty color, like a bright lime green, in white it is quite appealing. My favorite part about this Spyder variant is the rear deck that features louvers, which helps the V10 extract heat. For a period in the early 2000s, automakers — including Lamborghini — were displaying the engines under a glass panel. I prefer the former’s “function over form” design. This also carries over to the Huracan Evo’s rear end as well. The exhaust is piped straight out the back of the engine and, additionally, the rear is much more open with a lot of grilles. If you look closely you can see inside a bit and as a car geek, I just adore it. Continued on page 20

With the top up, you’ll note that the Huracan Spyder’s greenhouse is rather compact. Unsurprisingly, this carries over into the cabin. Given the room necessary to stow away the cloth top and due to the Huracan’s mid-engine layout, some of the interior space is eroded when compared to the coupe variant. It’s not much but if you’re on the extreme end of the spectrum, like me at 6’8, every inch counts. Adding to the intimate feel were my test vehicle’s seats, which were lightweight and carbon fiber-backed. While they’re not race-spec chairs, they’re pretty much as close as you can get from the factory. So, let me cut to the chase. Here’s the good news: They’re more comfortable than Lamborghini’s last-gen, carbon seats. Here’s the bad news: That’s not saying much. They’re still tough to deal with, especially if driving for an extended period (e.g., over one hour).

If you’re going to take the plunge, make sure to spend as much time as possible “testing” the seats. Sliding behind the three-spoke steering wheel, the cockpit looks largely the same. That said, there’s one major difference. The refreshed Huracan replaces the busy switchgear that occupied the center console with a more minimalist and forward-thinking approach. Now, there’s an 8.4-inch touchscreen that serves as home for all your infotainment and HVAC needs. Overall, this is a welcome addition given that the switches could be a bit cumbersome at times. One thing that was a bit disappointing in the Evo was the instrument panel (IP). While it’s a nice, fully digital display, the problem is that the pre-refresh car had the ability to be customized in a variety of ways. For example, if I wanted to view the map in the IP, I could. Now though it’s a bit limited, which is a shame. Clearly, Lamborghini doesn’t subscribe to the

The timepiece collection 20th anniversary edition | 20

saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Overall, what differentiates the Huracan’s interior from your run-of-the-mill auto are the proportions. Take, for example, the windshield, which is severely raked and pushed out in front of you. It takes some getting used to as there’s a chance you’ll have to duck to see stoplights when you’re first in line at an intersection. But because the windshield is cheated so far in front of you, the interior feels much more spacious than it is. Because of this, you won’t feel claustrophobic. Though for many, the aforementioned doesn’t particularly matter all that much. It all comes down to how a Lamborghini drives. Fair enough! Once you push the Start button and the 5.2-liter, naturally aspirated V10 engine sparks to life, you immediately realize what a serious performance machine the Huracan Evo is. It’s much louder than the outgoing

car and this is further enhanced by being in a soft-top version. I have no problem with that. With 610 horsepower, it’s safe to say most people will not be yearning for more juice. Mated to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, this V10 motor propels you from zero to 60 in a spritely 3.5 seconds. Personally, I get a kick out of the differences between driving modes. While many all-new autos feature these types of settings, they’re not always as drastic as found in this Lamborghini. In Strada, the Huracan Evo is leisurely and rather sedate. Shifts aren’t really felt and it’s almost as though the car just glides along. In Sport, things get amped up a bit. You feel the chassis get slightly tauter, but it’s not bone crushing. And, in my favorite, Corsa, the car is fully unleashed. Frankly, this is how I drove the car most of the time as I wanted the sharpest throttle response as well as most unadulterated exhaust note. The pops and bangs on the overrun are Continued on page 22

reminiscent of the Fourth of July. That’s merely the start though. Although the Huracan Evo is quite firmly sprung, I didn’t find it jarring to drive around northern New Jersey. In fact, I was a bit surprised at how well composed it was. Where this tight suspension pays dividends is when you stretch the cars legs out in the corners. While hitting apexes, body roll is kept in check. What I like most about the RWD variant over the allwheel drive (AWD) Huracan is that it’s actually fun. I know that may be silly to say about a V10-powered supercar but hear me out. The AWD Lamborghini tends to understeer when pushed hard. The RWD car, on the other hand, can get feisty. If you overdo the “go” pedal, don’t be surprised if its hind quarters steps out on you.

know what you’re doing. Otherwise, you may wind up going off-roading. Backwards. Very, very fast. As an amateur photographer, there’s a lot of joy to be found in finding the right moment to capture. Sure, you can snap a picture using a digital camera that just requires you to point and shoot. But it’s exponentially more rewarding if you’re using a manual camera where you must find all the right settings and it requires skill to snap the best possible image. To me, that’s the beauty in the Huracan Evo RWD Spyder. When you’re trying to get the most out of it, it will let you know it’s alive. In a day and age where cars lack personality, the Spyder is worth its hefty $230,000 price of admission. Oh, and the top comes off. This simply means everything just gets better.

Essentially, the car can be a handful and you need to

Elegance is an Attitude Longines’ Newest Ambassador is Here to Prove Exactly That WRITTEN BY

JACQUELINE HOPE

S

wiss watchmaker Longines has announced that actor Regé-Jean Page has joined the brand as its newest Ambassador of Elegance and it is impossible to imagine a more fitting appointment. Page has an elegance that transcends borders and generations, and an effortless sense of style. Page’s Emmy-nominated performance as the Duke of Hastings in Netflix’s hugely successful Regency-period drama Bridgerton captivated audiences all over the world. His portrayal turned him into one of the world’s most admired performers, garnering global praise for his role, with individual award nominations from the Emmy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards, among others, and a win for Outstanding Actor at the NAACP Image Awards. The British actor has been announced as a Longines Ambassador of Elegance and the brand’s CEO, Matthias Breschan, could not be more thrilled, saying: “An actor with Regé-Jean’s talent, poise and presence only comes along a few times in a generation. He has already accomplished so much but it is clear that this is only the beginning of what will be a magnificent career. It’s fair to say that he redefines elegance and all of us at Longines are excited to welcome him to the family.” Page is also looking forward to the partnership. Describing his enthusiasm for Longines, he says, The timepiece collection 20th anniversary edition | 26

“It’s simple, really. Longines makes such beautiful watches. There is something very special about being able to work with things that bring beauty to the world.” Page’s upcoming projects include a starring role in Paramount Pictures’ blockbuster Dungeons and Dragons and he recently finished filming on Joe and Anthony Russo’s The Gray Man on Netflix. He will next star in and executive produce a new, reimagined version of The Saint for Paramount Pictures.

For years, Longines’ claim - it is so much more than a motto - has been, “Elegance is an Attitude.” Does Page consider himself to be elegant? He smiles and says, “That’s a tough question to answer! I think I’m capable of elegance and I like to hold myself to a standard of elegance, which means carrying myself with certain consciousness. Part of that is generosity and living in a way that helpful to other people. In doing that, you can bring more beauty to the world.” About Longines

Page starred in Shonda Rhime’s 2018 legal drama series For the People and in 2016, he memorably introduced himself to a global audience in the role of Chicken George in the Emmy-nominated series Roots. In film, he was most recently seen in the Emmy-nominated jazz-era romance Sylvie’s Love from Amazon Studios. TIME honored Page by including him in its 100 Next list, the magazine’s annual list of the men and woman who are shaping the future in their fields and defending the next generation of leadership.

Based in Satin-Imier, Switzerland since 1832, Longines watchmakers enjoy an expertise steeped in tradition, elegance and performance. The Gift of Time

The Timepiece Collection Celebrates 20 Years in Business WRITTEN BY

JACQUELINE HOPE

W

e were young and naive and I said, “Let’s get in the watch business.”

That’s how Michael Rosenberg, one of the two founding partners of The Timepiece Collection in Englewood, pitched the idea to partner, Jeffrey Khalaf, Michael’s long time friend and an avid watch aficionado in his own rite. Twenty years later, the pair have done so much more than that. Rosenberg and Khalaf, both longtime Bergen County residents, have been friends since junior high while growing up in Wayne. Each had a successful career. Rosenberg was a certified public accountant while Khalaf had a flourishing cell-phone business – but the passion for their respective professions was never entirely there. So, they made a change. Starting in a small, nondescript office building with no foot traffic, Rosenberg and Khalaf had an idea, and were perfectly suited for its execution. “We always loved the watches that most people never knew existed. Yet, these companies have been making some of the most intricate, exclusive and beautiful timepieces for more than one hundred years,” Rosenberg says. “When Jeffrey and I would travel, we’d find these smaller boutiques selling these more refined brands. We knew there was potential for a shop a bit closer to home.”

From that small office space, The Timepiece Collection was truly born. When most people hadn’t even heard of Ebay, Khalaf and Rosenberg were selling watches on the auction website. “I don’t know that we were the pioneers because maybe other people were doing it. But I’m not saying we weren’t…,” Rosenberg says with a laugh. In the beginning though, it wasn’t easy to get these highly regarded yet conservative brands to believe in this unknown duo. “Most of the retailers in the industry were older and we were the new kids in town,” Rosenberg recalls. “But, we had no brands. You have to be authorized to sell these company’s products. It was hard because we would call a brand and they would ask ‘where is your store?’ and what other lines we had in our portfolio. We started to do a lot of pre-owned and a couple of brands gave us our break and that opened us up.” With sales grit, determination and a leap of faith, Rosenberg and Khalaf opened up their first true retail shop: 400 sprawling square feet on South Dean Street in Englewood. In the beginning, “Everyone would come in and ask, “Do you carry Rolex?” I would laugh and say we don’t. It’s all people knew. Jeffrey and I gave them a chance to really experience some more esoteric watch brands.”

The timepiece collection 20th anniversary edition | 30

“Any seasoned watch collector might know the likes of Breguet or Parmigiani Fleurier, but to this day, most people still do not. Of course, there were jewelry stores around Bergen County selling watches. However, there were no true ‘watch stores.’ We knew we had our niche.” Twenty years later, what started out as a small shop has now grown into 4,500 square foot destination store at the corner of East Palisade and Grand Avenues in Englewood catering to not only collectors but to anyone interested in purchasing a premium luxury timepiece. The Timepiece Collection is an authorized dealer for two dozen brands of watches ranging from more well-known names such as Hublot and Omega to lesser known pieces produced by companies such as Bremont, as well as a fullfledged service center for any watch brand a customer might bring through their doors. “We wanted to elevate Englewood. We saw its potential as a destination just across the bridge that had all the shopping, dining and entertainment. We believed in the town,” Mike explains about the new flagship building. “We compromised, and we are proud of what we created and really think it gives Englewood a much more luxurious vibe than what was there. We are always trying to enhance our community.”

400 sq. foot shop on Dean Street

Interior of Flagship store on Palisades Ave.

That is something that hasn’t changed over time. Whether it’s getting the opportunity to bring customers along to see the Kentucky Derby with Longines or hosting a fundraiser for the Hope for the Warriors with Hublot, Khalaf and Rosenberg have always had a “relationships first” attitude towards business that has helped them forge many relationships along the way - not to mention the countless hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for a plethora of incredible causes this small watch shop and her two owners have helped facilitate. When the Apple Watch debuted in 2015, some saw that as the end of the ‘traditional watch’ world. Khalaf and Rosenberg just saw it as a new Continued on page 32

opportunity to introduce, and spread the appreciation for, the watch brands you may have never heard of. Seven years after it’s debut, and as popular has wearables have become, their business model is more solid than ever. Based on what Rosenberg and Khalaf have accomplished over the last two decades, it’s difficult to imagine that any industry disruptor could throw them off their charted course. As The Timepiece Collection celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, they can proudly say they have beaten back all challengers while successfully navigating through recessions, stock market tumbles and a global pandemic. Of course, they have altered their business approach somewhat over the last two decades, incorporating more brands and appealing to a broader customer base, while also adjusting to the changes in the industry such as age of the clientele and big corporations buying up many of the independent Swiss manufacturers. “The industry has changed to where a lot of business is found through digital channels,” Khalaf said. Whereas the Timepiece Collection’s reach once included just Bergen County and some surrounding areas, the little retail shop in Englewood has now gone global. “The way we target our customers has completely changed. Digital opens you up to a much larger audience. We are seeing generations. Where we were selling to certain people, now they have retired and moved on to different areas and we’re dealing with their kids. We are seeing a second generation in our customer base,” Khalaf exclaims. “I think younger generations enjoy timepieces just as much as older ones. The newer generation will have an Apple, Fitbit, or Samsung and also have their timepiece. At first, everyone within the industry was saying ‘Oh my God, what’s going to happen with the release of the Apple Watch?!’ but business has stayed strong throughout all of this new technology. People realize that every couple of years the smart watch becomes obsolete whereas that’s never the case with the handmade timepiece.”

With the opening of their state of the art service center, Rosenberg and Khalaf have only strengthened their position within the watch world. What started with one watchmaker has now grown to three, and the company is poised to add more as demand for their services grow. “Not only are we servicing our own customer’s high end watch, but everyone is coming in for even a simple battery repair. It once again gives us the opportunity to show off that we aren’t just selling $30,000 watches, but we really have something for anyone who enjoys wearing a watch,” Rosenberg says. That doesn’t even consider the latest craze: Pre-owned watches. From their days slinging watches on eBay in the late 90s or early 2000s, the pre-owned watch market has exploded worldwide. With the experience of those early Ebay days, however, Rosenberg and Khalaf had all the tools necessary just waiting for the pre-owned market to heat up. “Over the years, our preowned business has steadily grown. As of now, it comprises about 25% of our business, but we really believe that number will grow to around 50% in the next 2-3 years,” Rosenberg explains, giving credit to their strong understanding of the digital market space that allows a broader reach of customers. “It’ll be a miserable day in New Jersey with nobody leaving their homes, yet FedEx walks in to ship out 10 watches across the country. It might be snowing here, but it’s sunny in Florida.” Change is inevitable, but being able to feel the pulse of the times, coupled with a savvy business sense, have allowed Rosenberg and Khalaf to succeed where most have failed. With the same energy those young, naive kids had way back when, Rosenberg and Khalaf forge ahead - telling time on their terms.

Time to Eat Oris joins the Bergen county Food & Wine Festival

T

his past September, Oris joined the Bergen County Food & Wine Festival held outside of Garden State Plaza in Paramus. While guests were wowed by sleek look of the 30’ Airstream, it was once they walked up the steps and inside this luxury pop-up boutique that mouths began to drop.

Guests got a chance to view and try on Oris’ collections and speak with knowledgeable representatives who got to show off what Oris is all about. While plenty of focus was on the real food that day, Oris provided plenty of arm candy to elevate Bergen County’s largest celebration of food even higher.

The Timepiece Collection, a signature sponsor of this annual event, have been instrumental in creating immersive experiences for guests to enjoy. As the title sponsor of the VIP Pavilion, along with with the Oris Airstream, the Timepiece Collection has continued to find fun and inventive ways to elevate their brand and make a mark on their community.

The Bergen County Food & Wine Festival is hosted by the 200 Club of Bergen County, a non-profit focused on providing support to families of local police, fire and EMS services. Over 40 local restaurants and chefs such as Varka of Ramsey and Jamie Knott of the Saddle River Inn came out to support The 200 Club’s mission, providing sample bites to the over 2,000 attendees.

RARIFIED AIR A look at some of the most exclusive and elusive single malts WRITTEN BY

JOE GRATKOWSKI

I

t was only very recently in my whisky travels that I truly began to feel winter air start to creep into New Jersey. It was later at night and I was making my way between Teaneck and Paramus doing a couple whisky tastings. As I got to my car I noticed that, not only can I see my breath, it is lingering. In addition, my car door handle was sticking a bit. Now, it is worth noting that I have had my car for over a dozen years, so I know how it ticks! Have you ever heard of some folks that can tell it is going to rain by a sensation in their knees? It’s very similar to my old car and Old Man Winter. When my car door handle starts locking up on me…winter’s coming! I digress. Another sign that we are well into November is the yearly release of some highly sought after whisky! Every year, right around this time, rare Bourbons & Single Malt Scotches begin to hit the shelves. While there are many outstanding whiskies in the world, such as Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye, which was just named ‘World Whisky Of The Year’ in Jim Murray’s 2015 Whisky Bible, I want to focus on single malt scotches here. I’ve always had a soft spot for the rare malts, and this season looks like a good one! It’s important to note, of course, that these bottles are extremely limited and perhaps even challenging to find. They contain some of the rarest whisky to be released on the market this year. When in doubt, you can always ask any of your finer retailers out there to hunt them down for you. Prices on some of these bottles range from about a hundred dollars all the way upwards of $2,500+…still quite a value when you consider that some of the distilleries represented here are no longer in existence. That makes the liquid not only unique, but unrepeatable.

◊ BRORA 37 YEAR OLD Brora 37 Year is a limited edition, natural cask strength single malt from a closed distillery. This is the oldest Brora bottled in this series, and there are less than 3000 individually numbered bottles in the entire world! To make it even more fun, think of it like this…when this whisky was distilled in 1977, Star Wars opened in cinemas, snow fell in Miami for the only time on record, and the first Apple computer went on sale. THE TASTE: Gorgeous and smoky/sweet, this Brora is well rounded. Syrupy Smooth, look for notes of dark chocolate with a perfectly judged portion of sea salt. It’s simply stunning.

The timepiece collection 20th anniversary edition | 46

◊ THE CALEDONIAN 40 YEAR OLD A highly unusual limited edition, The Caledonian 40 Year is a natural cask strength single grain Scotch whisky. This is also from a now closed distillery. Often referred to as “The Cally,” this is the oldest release by the original distillers. Distilled in 1974, it was the same year Muhammad Ali won The Rumble in the Jungle. This one is quite out of the ordinary and perfect for the person that may have everything. It actually makes a fantastic aperitif! THE TASTE: Highly complex yet wonderfully open and accessible, fruity and zesty with some classic Oak notes like wooden pencil boxes.

◊ CAOL ILA UNPEATED 17 YEAR OLD Caol Ila Unpeated 17 Year Old is a natural cask strength limited edition single malt Scotch whisky. Caol Ila is a distillery in Islay which is know for its smoky, peated whiskies. However, occasionally they will release an ‘unpeated’ version so we can all experience the delicate and amazing fruity flavors that Caol Ila is capable of doling out. This is the tenth limited release of unpeated Caol Ila, and since it was distilled in 1997 it is the oldest release so far. THE TASTE: Trademark fruity sharpness on the palate, hints of the sea and the coast, grainy cereals yet soft and harmonious.

◊ CLYNELISH SELECT RESERVE Coming in at a robust 56.1% ABV, this single malt Scotch from Clynelish is only the second Clynelish release in this series. It spent time in a number of different wood types including ex-bourbon first-fill American oak barrels, rejuvenated and refilled American Oak hogsheads, and ex-bodega and refill European Oak butts. THE TASTE: Very complex and richly flavored. Begins sweetly with creamy notes of rich fruit, buttery toffee and chocolate, then reaches the silky dryness of a spicy finish. I just love the full flavored waxy Clynelish profile, it has a smooth-drinking nature with chocolate-orange flavors.

RARIFIED AIR ◊ DAILUAINE 34 YEAR OLD If you can detect a theme here, the Dailuaine 34 year old is also natural cask strength single malt Scotch whisky. Founded in 1852, Dailuaine is still active, and was home to Scotch whisky’s first ‘pagoda roof’ in 1889. This is the oldest bottling to ever come from the original distiller by a dozen years! This whisky was distilled in 1980, during that year Mount St. Helens erupted and six Americans disguised as Canadians escaped Tehran…A real life drama later filmed as Argo. THE TASTE: One of the most fragrant whiskies on this list, it has an unexpected spicy complexity. Beautifully balanced, clean and rich from beginning to end.

◊ DALWHINNIE 25 YEAR OLD This rare malt comes from the highest, coldest distillery in Scotland: Dalwhinnie. This is another high proof offering, weighing in at 48.8% ABV. This malt was distilled in 1989, back when Rain Man won Best Picture at the Oscars and a little show called Seinfeld premiered on TV. THE TASTE: Wonderfully creamy, aromatic and crisply focused. Drinks really well both straight and with a little water. Notes of hay and citrus with grassy undertones and just a sweet, malty base. Warming and delicious.

◊ LAGAVULIN 12 YEAR OLD One of my favorite releases each year is the Lagavulin 12 Year Old. While Lagavulin 16 Year may be an all time favorite of many, and a legendary classic, this is the stronger younger brother. At 56.8% ABV, every drop is packed with classic Lagavulin notes. This is the 13th release of the special 12 Year Old series from the original distiller’s stocks. If you notice that there is already a Lagavulin lover in your house, this could make a really cool gift at a reasonable price. THE TASTE: The Lagavulin 12 is expressive and energetic, with a self-assured maritime vibe. Sweet seaweed along with sharper fruitier notes. Vanilla sweet and a smooth oily mouth feel. The salt and smoke round out the back end of a fantastic finish.

The timepiece collection 20th anniversary edition | 48

RARIFIED AIR ◊ PITTYVAICH 25 YEAR OLD This limited edition single malt Scotch comes from Pittyvaich, a short-lived and closed Speyside distillery. It’s very rare to even see Pittyvaich as a single malt. Technically, this bottling has lived longer than the distillery did! It was established in 1975 and closed in 1993. This particular whisky was distilled in 1989, back when Nintendo released the first Game Boy handheld. THE TASTE: This whisky is perfect for dinner contemplation with its attractive and almost slender nature. Honey sweet aromas, delicate and developed fruit notes like strawberry jam and baked green apple. Sliced bananas and a warm nuttiness that balances it all out. Slightly herbal and dry, but spicy and aromatic.

◊ PORT ELLEN 32 YEAR OLD Last, but certainly not least, is one of the most sought after single malt Scotches on the market today from the closed Islay distillery of Port Ellen. Very rare and highly coveted for its age, this Port Ellen was distilled in 1983 and is coming at you in all its glory at 53.9% ABV. Earlier and far larger releases of this single malt now change hands among collectors for up to ten times their original retail price. THE TASTE: Few whiskies are as enigmatic as Port Ellen, and this year’s release is no different. It is a sweet, intense and fiery event. Deeply fruity with dried orange peel and apple skins. Mineral base that is a bit beach-like (sea air, bonfires) with a bit of pervading smoke. Just amazing.

moving time forward the timepiece collection’s state-of-the-art service center rivals the best in switzerland WRITTEN BY TARA DELORENZO

Over the past 20 years, The Timepiece Collection has made its mark as a luxury watch destination. A few years ago, Jeffrey Khalaf and Michael Rosenberg, owners of the Timepiece Collection, added a full-service watch repair center. In 2001, The Timepiece Collection first opened their doors in a small retail space in Englewood. The authorized luxury watch brand dealer has become well known in Bergen County and continues to build upon its reputation. While their primary focus has always been selling luxury watches, in 2019, they expanded their business to accommodate a full range of high-end watch repair services. “My business partner, Jeffrey and I, developed an entire service center where our highly trained staff members are certified to complete maintenance and repairs on high complications for luxury brands. We carry approximately 25 brands in-store, but complete repairs on dozens of others. We’re able to complete a variety of complicated restorations any watch or jewelry store wouldn’t normally be able to repair, unless they had properly trained watchmakers for the work,” said Co-Owner Michael Rosenberg. “After so many years in the watch industry, we realized we needed another way to stand out from our competitors,” he continued. “People buy watches every day, but to keep those pieces running properly, they need to be maintained. All watches, Rosenberg says, requires maintenance much like a car requires an oil change. “Building the service center was, and still is such an important part of growing our business and maintaining our long-term customers.”

Rosenberg and Khalaf saw how important it was to service watches in a timely manner. “For a long time, we were outsourcing high complication repairs directly to our brands and other service centers throughout the U.S. The turnaround could be anywhere from 6-10 weeks; longer if the repair was sent overseas. For our customers, this was unbearable. We needed to find a resolution,” Rosenberg continued. “We felt if we could offer a faster option for repair services, we’d not only make our customers happy, but our brands too.” Tanja Nielsen, one of three Watchmakers at The Timepiece Collection, explained the difficulty in keeping a short turnaround time. “Currently, our service center runs on a 3-6 week turnaround based on the difficulty of the repair or overhaul. This also factors in the availability of parts. Most vintage watches require extra attention because many times, we find that the parts are no longer available from the manufacturer. In some instances, we have to source parts from around the globe.” The development of the service center began in 2017 with a redesign of the store and expansion into additional space. “Within the service center, we included dust and air purification units, integrated specific lighting, and built-in vacuum and compression devices to eliminate any dust particles in the air. The space also contains aerodynamic works stations; created for every precaution of health and safety. Every step of the development process was thoughtful and precise. We went beyond the standard that you would find elsewhere and paid extra attention to the quality of the materials we used in the workspace. Our goal was to emulate the equivalent of a Swiss service center,” Rosenberg continued. Continued on page 54

INTRA-MATIC AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH SWISS MADE

“One of the biggest challenges we originally faced when creating this space was truly finding the individuals trained in this line of work. We outsourced to find certified Swiss watchmakers and we were extremely selective in our vetting process,” Rosenberg said. Becoming a watchmaker is no easy accomplishment, with years of continued training required. “I began my four year training in Denmark in 1996. Horology schools in Europe are a bit different than in the US and the standards are higher,” explains Nielsen. “The European programs can take anywhere from 12-36 months longer. In 2001, after I became a certified watchmaker, I began working for Swatch Group.” The mega group carries 15+ watch houses under their umbrella and was the first major player to do so back in 1983. “Over the course of my 18 years with Swatch, I continued training on different horology levels for all of their lux brands including Omega, Breguet, and Blancpain,” Neilsen said. In 2019, Nielsen left Swatch Group. “Soon after visiting The Timepiece Collection for the first time, I discovered this was more than just your typical watch repair department. Everything about the space rivaled anything I had seen over the course of my career. This service center was built to the highest horology standards, and I am so proud to be a part of the team.” Since its opening, The Timepiece Collection has

hired an additional two watchmakers to keep up with demand, and intends to hire more. “The response from our clients has been unexpected, to say the least. We could have never imaged how essential our service center would be for a community that was missing it,” Rosenberg said. According to Rosenberg, this expansion has brought in an overabundance of new clientele. “Buying and selling watches has changed considerably over the past 5-10 years. Most luxury brands have reduced their yearly production which created significant growth in the pre-owned market. Each timepiece that comes through our certified, pre-owned department is inspected, checked and repaired - if damage exists.” The Timepiece Collection not only services customers, but corporations and smaller brands as well. “Afterour build out was completed, we quickly discoveredthat there were several watch groups and other businesses that needed quality service centers in theU.S. Our goal was, and is, to be one of those servicecenters,” Rosenberg explained. In its 20 years, The Timepiece Collection has become so much more than a traditional watch shop. With the addition of their cutting edge service center along with their strong new and pre-owned watch sales, The Timepiece Collection has charted their course towards 20 more years of success.

Artisans of Emotions Chopard Aims to Excite with the Maison’s latest collections WRITTEN BY SHAY ATKINSON

P

assed on from one generation to the next since the Maison was founded, Chopard’s identity has been forged over time, and with the contribution of every member of the family who oversee it. Nowadays, it is this unique family spirit that differentiates Chopard in the world of high jewelery and high watchmaking. It is evident in every step the Maison takes, along with its hallmarks of emotion and generosity. Chopard’s independence allows it to support crafts with a glorious past that are a source of great pride today. Together with the impetus provided by the Scheufele Family, this support of its artisans also drives a boundless creative audacity that sets the Maison apart. An audacity that has led Chopard to pave the way for a new vision of ethical luxury. Over the past 20 years, The Timepiece Collection, along with owners Jeffrey Khalaf and Michael Rosenberg, have forged a strong bond with the Scheufele Family. Now, The Timepiece Collection is one of the only authorized dealers of Chopard to carry all three of the prestigious Alpine Eagle, L.U.C and L’Heure lines in the United States. Here’s a preview of these new collections, available at The Timepiece Collection.

Three generations of the Scheufele Family Karl, Karl-Friderich & Karl-Fritz Scheufele.

Alpine Eagle Return of an icon

C

ontemporary, refined and assertive, the new Alpine Eagle sports chic timepiece collection is a state-of-the-art reinterpretation of the St. Moritz, the first watch created in 1980 by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, now co-president of Chopard. Imagined and personally designed by him, Alpine Eagle is driven by his passion for the Alps and by the lofty power of the eagle that reigns supreme there. Crafted from an exclusive, ultra-resistant and light-reflecting metal named Lucent Steel A223, it beats to the rhythm of a Chopard chronometer-certified movement. Bearing testament to Chopard’s ethical approach, Alpine Eagle gives the Maison an opportunity to reveal its new commitment to protecting the Alpine environment through the launch of the Eagle Wings Foundation – of which Karl-Friedrich Scheufele is a founding member. Drawing on his creative strength and his passion for the Alps, but also on Louis Sullivan’s principles of harmony which dictate that “form follows function”, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele has created a new collection: Alpine Eagle. Belonging to the select circle of watches with an integrated case and bracelet, this timepiece presents a design that is both refined and contemporary, featuring a wealth of references to the Alpine eagle. Its rock-like textured dial evoke an eagle’s iris, its hands call to mind the raptor’s feathers and the cold glinting steel is reminiscent of glaciers. Finally, the dial colour directly refers to the shades of Alpine ranges. The case is distinguished by a protrusion protecting the crown engraved with a compass rose, an instrument that has helped adventurers find their way since ancient times. Today, it becomes the emblem of contemporary eagles capable of choosing the right direction in the pursuit of their destiny. Alpine Eagle’s round bezel is punctuated by eight screws, grouped in pairs at the four cardinal points. These screws also serve a technical function by guaranteeing the water resistance of the watch to

100 metres. All Alpine Eagle’s flat surfaces are satin-brushed. The hours and minutes hands, like the hour-markers, are coated with Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 to enhance nocturnal legibility. Issued from the time of its launch in ten references in steel, gold, bi-material or diamond-set gold, Alpine Eagle is a particularly rich collection, available in unisex models in two different diameters: 41 mm for the Large model and 36 mm for the Small model.

L.U.C Lunar One Astronomical precision and an orbital display

T

he flagship creation of the Chopard Fine Watchmaking collection, the L.U.C Lunar One timepiece with perpetual calendar and astronomical moon phases, is the only timepiece in this category equipped with a high-precision orbital moon-phase display appearing in a rotating aperture. Endowed with a rare degree of accuracy guaranteeing a time lag of only one day every 122 years, the chronometer-certified L.U.C. 96-13 L movement gives a new lease on life to an extremely limited 25-piece new series in ethical 18-carat rose gold. Graced with an elegant deep blue sunray-patterned dial, this embodiment of horological complexity is thus treated to a rare and precious interpretation such as only the most experienced Manufactures are capable of producing. In addition to its “chronometer” certifications, its high level of precision and finishing is acknowledged by the prestigious Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. A timepiece for discerning connoisseurs The L.U.C Lunar One is a timepiece graced with exceptionally elegant, pleasing proportions. Its multiple indications, its elaborate finishing and its play on colours make it a watchmaking masterpiece. Its special status within the L.U.C Collection has led Karl-Friedrich Scheufele (Chopard Co-President) to interpret it in a 25-piece limited series made of ethical 18-carat rose gold. The 43 mm-diameter case is adorned with vertical satin-brushed sides along with a polished bezel and lugs, thereby creating pleasing textured effects that further enhance its visual depth and interest. It makes an impeccable match with the multilevel dial whose surface is a deep and extremely elegant deep blue. Its sunray pattern radiates from the L.U.Chopard.

L’Heure du Diamant A sparkling showcase for Chopard’s watch and jewelery skills

W

hen all the codes of aesthetic excellence converge, perfection gives way to pure emotion. It is in this spirit that the L’Heure du Diamant collection sums up the wealth of artistic crafts cultivated within Chopard, by artisans ranging from master watchmakers to gemsetters. The collection is reinvented in a new cushion-shaped watch, fashioned from ethical 18-carat white gold, graced with a mother-of-pearl dial and rimmed with diamonds. This creation features the emblematic tree bark-textured gold bracelet sculpted using a proprietary technique and beats to the rhythm of the Chopard 09.01-C self-winding movement. It bears within it the genius of skills patiently nurtured through the years by Chopard’s Artisans of Emotion.

A natural-born classic With L’Heure du Diamant, all the elements contributing to the virtuoso construction of an artwork – encompassing artistic, technical, symbolic, artisanal and heritage dimensions – converge to perfection. Chopard once again demonstrates this wide-ranging prowess through a jewelery watch featuring modern lines and proportions testifying to the extraordinary vitality of its workshops. The cushion-shaped case with its curved sides endows this new creation with an undeniable sense of grandeur which combines with the unique bark-textured strap to revive the inimitable spirit of 1960s glamour, while embedding it firmly in contemporary aesthetic codes. Luminous gemsetting The absolute purity of the diamond is majestically highlighted by the collection’s emblematic crown setting technique, which exalts the beauty of each of the gems by allowing the light to shine through. This ribbon of diamonds encircling the case lights up a delicate mother-of-pearl dial – itself dotted with 12 diamond hour-markers.

A sculpted gold bracelet The light also plays brilliantly across the tree bark-style bracelet featuring a texture, silky touch and impeccable comfort stemming from unique expertise. Reflecting the plant world, its extremely fine veins lend a special vibrancy to the bracelet, thanks to a close-knit weave giving the ethical 18-carat white gold an incomparably supple and light feel. This entirely hand-crafted goldwork technique was developed by the Scheufele family in the 1960s. It epitomises the pinnacle of mental and manual brilliance displayed in this jewellery watch. This model is also available with a leather strap.

Watchmaking and jewelery heritage Powered by the self-winding Chopard 09.01-C mechanical movement and a 42-hour power reserve entirely produced by Chopard’s watchmakers, this watch testifies to the complementary skills nurtured by the Maison. Jewelery watches are a decades-long speciality of the Scheufele Family currently at the helm of Chopard.

An ideal blend of beauty and precision, L’Heure du Diamant collection reaps the benefits of this technical virtuosity dedicated to impressive artistic modernity. From designer to watchmaker, from jeweler to gemsetter, and from polisher to watchmaker, these creations are brought to life by the wide-ranging talents of the Maison’s in-house artisans.
