History

No kidding! The Torpedo Factory Art Center was an actual torpedo factory. It’s not just a catchy name for a building bursting with art studios. The U.S. Navy began construction on the original building in 1918 as a factory for the manufacture of torpedo shell casings and other weapons. Torpedoes were manufactured here following World War I and throughout World War II. The green MK-14 torpedo displayed in the main hall was made here in 1945. Its log book, in the exhibit case, tells its history and lists the submarines on which it traveled. After World War II the Federal Government used the complex as a storage place for objects as diverse as dinosaur bones and archives from the Nuremburg War Crimes Trials. In 1969, the City of Alexandria bought the buildings which remained unoccupied until 1974, when Marian Van Landingham, founder and first director of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, proposed the use of the two smallest buildings as an art center. On September 15, 1974, the Torpedo Factory Art Center opened to the public. Today the Torpedo Factory is a thriving not-for-profit organization that serves as an example of how the arts can revitalize a community and as a prototype for communities throughout the world who wish to establish their own visual arts facility.
