United Sounds By Liz Lopez KOOP is a community radio station in Austin and one of the only member-owned and operated stations run in a cooperative structure. This is powered primarily upon its volunteers and supporters for all operations of the station. The stations’ first air date was December 17, 1994 and to commemorate the special day, the City of Austin has proclaimed December 17, 2019 as “KOOP Radio” day. KOOP radio celebrates their 25 year “birthday bash” party featuring Dale Watson, A Giant Dog, and Cilantro Boombox. KOOP’s general manager Federico Pacheco enthusiastically states, “We’re able to celebrate KOOP’s 25 years on the air only because of the contribution and support of hundreds of volunteers, programmers, staff and sustainers whose passion and commitment have made it possible to have here in Austin one of the best and most unique community radio stations in the country.” $20 pre-sale tickets and $25 day of the show. Her family musical influences originate in blues and traditional Mexican music, and she was highly influenced by R&B/soul music, listening to Stevie Wonder, The Jacksons, Prince, and many other artists of the genre in the 70s and 80s. Current influences are artists in the contemporary R&B, neo-soul and hip hop worlds, such as fellow Dallasite Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, The Roots, Maxwell and Sade, to name a few. Austin Music Foundation presents The NEXT 2020 The Austin Music Foundation will kick off 2020 with the return of its marquee annual event, “AMF Presents: The NEXT,” on Friday, January 24 at Antone’s Nightclub (305 E 5th Street). “The NEXT” is a live music showcase and fundraiser commemorating the conclusion of AMF’s Artist Development Program. Building on the success of the program, this year’s event will also introduce “The NEXT On Wax,” a compilation album pressed on limited-run 12” vinyl, which offers the ADP artists a tangible piece of their work completed during the program and sole ownership of the singles masters. The album features new and original music by each artist, all recorded, mixed and mastered at The Bubble Recording Studio in Austin, and will be available for purchase for the first time on the evening of the event where each artist will also perform. The seven graduates of the 2019 class include Calliope Musicals, Kydd Jones, William Harries Graham, DAYEATER, Jai Malano, Sydney Wright and Ray Prim. Doors for the event are at 7 p.m. and the showcase will begin at 8 p.m. “The NEXT is our way of recognizing hard work and showcasing art in its best form,” said Jennifer Dugas, Executive Director of the Austin Music Foundation. “And the ADP is AMF’s investment in the growth, long-term sustainability and future of Austin’s most promising artists. When the program ends, the partnership and support continues, because we have a vested interest in helping each of these individuals move forward. And we love that the Austin music community shares in this effort.”

VIP packages include two tickets to the show and afterparty, plus one copy of the limited-run ‘The NEXT On Wax’ compilation album on 12” vinyl. The afterparty, featuring DJ Mel, will take place immediately following the show in the upstairs bar at Antone’s, with complimentary drinks provided by Tito’s Vodka, Black Feather Whiskey and Dulce Vida Tequila. Guests will also enjoy a silent auction with packages from YETI, Capital Cruises, Alamo Drafthouse, Zipline Adventures, and more. The Artist Development Program (ADP) was designed by the Austin Music Foundation and launched in 2017 to provide high-level, focused music business training, professional development, mentoring, and unique revenue-earning and promotional opportunities to a select group of independent Austin artists. The seven artists selected for the ADP each year must demonstrate commitment to their craft, artistic excellence, strong business acumen, drive and talent. Through the ADP, participants receive hands-on, individualized guidance and tailored resources to help them advance their music careers. The ADP also serves as a bridge to the local and greater music industry, by cultivating peer-to-peer collaboration and facilitating meaningful relationships within and outside of the AMF network. Each year in Austin, the SXSW Music Festival brings artists, fans and music professionals together with film and tech industry creatives for a unique celebration, discussion and exploration of music — discovering new talent, making personal and business connections and enjoying a week of great live performances. This year’s festival will take place March 16-22. In 2020, SXSW is back with over 350 new Showcasing Artists from 42 countries. Not limited by genre or regional focus, everyone from fellow musicians to industry professionals and creatives from every field can enjoy a variety of musical styles at SXSW. New, developing, and established Showcasing Artists are represented each year amongst the 2,000 official performers looking to enhance their careers by reaching new audiences. The genre-bending 2020 lineup includes the SXSW return of Soccer Mommy, in advance of her upcoming LP; on-the-rise pop singer Caroline Rose; Montreal-based Fools Gold R&B producer HERO; Aussie singer-songwriter Didirri; Colombian reggae dancehall singer Dragón Rojo; and Ukrainian rapper alyona alyona.
The Hormones Hailing from the East Coast, New York no-wave legend Lydia Lunch; NYC’s soft disco and soul-centered 79.5; and the latest signing to Danger Mouse’s 30th Century label Baba Ali. Plus, Brooklyn’s The Natural History reunites us on the heels of the 10-year anniversary re-issue of The People That I Meet (which includes “Don’t You Ever,” best known from Spoon’s cover of the song on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga). From across the pond, London-based producer and DJ TSHA; UK grime artist Knucks; Scottish singer-songwriter Aaron Smith; and Danish experimental electronic composer Astrid Sonne. Heading Far East, jangly Japanese indie-pop group and new Damnably signing Hazy Sour Cherry join along with Chinese post-punk act The Hormones. Back stateside, we’re joined by Seattle’s country-tinged indie rock act Great Grandpa; Nashville Americana soul singer Nicole Atkins; brash punk outfit Beach Slang; Latin Grammy nominees Making Movies; and AI-embracing Dadabots.
