welcome TO THE DECEMBER EDITION OF TICKHILL TODAY. Another year has flown past and here I am again putting together the Christmas editions! Thank you for all your comments about the new design of the magazine, in general these were all incredibly positive and we will continue to make on-going improvements, keeping your feedback in mind. This month’s issue contains lots of details of Christmas events, fairs and concerts. I hope you will enjoy supporting them this festive season. The January issue will be delivered to you over the New Year period. It does however have to be with all of the distributors before Christmas, and as I am hoping to leave deliveries to Santa on Christmas Eve I have needed to set the deadline for submissions particularly early! Please ensure that anything you would like to be included is with me by Friday 7th December. While it does seem incredibly early (i am writing this mid-November) i would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas.

Best wishes, Paula x

Marking the passage of time THE LIVES OF animals are influenced by the sun. Primitive man was also governed by the sun, hunting by day and sleeping by night. When it was noticed that the sun cast shadows, and the length of a shadow could be a simple measure of the passage of time, the science of the sundial was born. early egyptian examples date from 1500 BC and dials are referred to in the Bible (2 Kings, Ch. 20, v.11) the design of sundials is rather sophisticated and they can be developed into quite accurate instruments if the underlying science can be understood. sundials found in gardens are usually only decorative items and can be unreliable for measuring time. to be accurate a dial must be specifically designed for the latitude where it will be sited and of course it only measures ‘sun’ time, not our modern standard time. the most prominent sundial in tickhill is over the south door of st mary’s Church and is an excellent example. it carries the

date 1800 but that probably refers to the original dial, later replaced by this more recent model. Nowadays our lives are organised by ever more elaborate time pieces and we are ruled by ‘the pips’, quartz watches and those controlled by signals from satellites. Astronomers use the extremely accurate Atomic clock for their elaborate celestial calculations. the public time pieces in tickhill are the two-faced dials of the clock over the library and the tuneful carillon housed in the tower of st. mary’s Church. Unlike the clock, the carillon can communicate time over large distances, using sound which can travel quite far, especially if the wind is in the right direction. the library clock has been improved in recent years. Both clock faces now tell the same time which wasn’t always the case in the past . And the time it shows is governed by satellite signal so it automatically adjusts when the nation’s clocks are all altered for Daylight saving purposes twice a

year. this business of changing the clocks is quite a palaver as we have so many time keepers, both digital and analogue, on all our clever appliances and mobile phones. the clock in the car often gets overlooked. modern lives are now 24/7 as the current jargon has it and artificial lighting has neutralised the dark hours of night time. What would it be like if there were no clocks and watches to harass our existence? Philip Mottram

Who else can give your child the attention they need at such an early stage in their development? Wilsic Road Day Nursery has been providing full day care for 22 years in Tickhill. Our staff ratio of 1:4 for 2 year olds and 1:8 for 3 year olds means there is always a member of staff on hand to help with using the Smartboard, read a story, give cuddles, potty training and providing that little bit more attention to each and every child. We are open Monday-Friday from 8am to 6pm all year round closing only for Bank Holidays and the Christmas period catering for everyone from those just wanting one 5 hour session to full time nursery care. Nursery Funded Hours can be spread over 1.5 days giving you 15 hours of FREE nursery care. We offer regular outings all over Tickhill to the duck pond, for fishing trips down Water Lane, strawberry picking at the farm, and to school for trips to watch their nativity plays. We also have a regular session at the library with Lesley, the Head Librarian. All outings have a ratio of 1:4 for added safety. Wilsic Road Day Nursery is a part of the local community. We take part in the Gala, the Scarecrow Festival, the Harvest Festival at St Marys Church, the Tickhill Together late night event in November and the Christingle service in December. We hold regular events for parents/ carers to come and discuss their child's development with their Key Person and provide opportunities for parents/ carers to tell us about stages of development reached with their child. Our “Open Door policy means there is always someone available to discuss any concerns or issues you may have and we give feedback on your child's day after every session. Sessions are available to start in January so call us now to book an appointment to come and see us!

WARM SOUNDS OF CLASSICAL GUITAR

Tickhill Methodist Church Coffee Morning

GlorioUs GUitAr

THE TICKHILL MUSIC society’s october concert treated us to the crisp, clean, warm sounds of the classical guitar played by Dimitris Dekavallas, the internationally famous Greek guitarist. it is a triumph that an artist who played for the Pope during the papal visit to this country, who has graced the Wigmore hall in london, the Carnegie hall in New York and many an international concert platform should come to humble tickhill. it was a rare treat indeed to have such consummate musicianship and instrumental fluency brought to our doorstep. the varied programme brought music from across continents, spanning the centuries and straddling different styles, introduced with engaging humour and delivered with impressive flair. most of the composers represented were probably unfamiliar to the audience apart from the one popular work by Albeniz. they came from hungary, Paraguay, russia, France and wherever our old friend ‘Anon’ came from. Whether it was traditional folk music style, devotionally religious from s. America, contemporary russian music, spanish samba and Flamenco dance music or reflective music from four centuries ago it was all played with outstanding skill and sensitivity, subtle dynamics or lyrical tenderness. the flying fingers of our guitarist encompassed them all with impressive ease. if foot stamping was called for to emphasise the beat it was energetically provided. this engaging personality introduced the pieces with a judicious blend of information and humour. After the concert he made himself available for people to comment or ask questions. it all 14 TICKHILL TODAY

TUDOR Activity Day ON TUESDAY 6TH November

children from Year 4 took part in a tudor activity day at temple Newsam, leeds. they completed activities

HAVING DROPPED THE Year 4 off at temple Newsham, Year 3 made their way to the thackray medical museum located within st James’s hospital in leeds. this museum is used to support our topic this term which is entitled ‘the Body’ During the first part of the day pupils explored the lively interactive ‘life Zone’ where we found out many things about how our bodies work. Work completed since our return shows just how many facts were taken in without anything being written down! For example, do you know what the human brain smells like? After the obligatory visit to the gift shop, pupils travelled back to leeds 1842. they were shocked to discover the appalling conditions that people lived in and certainly gained an appreciation of their home comforts. Again, work completed since our return shows just how affected they were by what they saw and they have written some moving reports ‘to the powers that be of leeds 1842’ demanding the very necessary 20 TICKHILL TODAY

such as bread making and learning about the barber’s surgeon, and experienced what life would be like in a tudor court, including being changes to improve people’s lives. overall the children rated the day very highly and if you were wondering ...........the human brain smells of strong cheese!

put in the stocks! All the children made a fantastic effort to be dressed as a poor tudors and experienced the harsh realities of what life was like in tudor times. this fitted in well with our study of the tudors. the children had a brilliant day and didn’t want to come home!

THE WHOLE SCHOOL has been involved in filling shoeboxes to send to children abroad via operation Christmas Child. it is a valuable lesson for our children to learn that not all children experience Christmas the way that we do and for many children the only Christmas gifts they will receive are the ones in the shoeboxes

that we wrapped up to send to them. We managed to contribute 36 to the total of 191 delivered to the Doncaster depot via the tickhill coordinators, and we would like to thank all the children and parents who contributed to this total whether it be by filling a complete shoebox or donating items to go into them.

REMEMBRANCE DAY IS always

a very poignant subject in school as we think about others at home and around the world who have given so much for the safety and security of others. in the weeks leading up to remembrance Day we work with the children to discuss why this special day is commemorated and try to approach the very emotive subject as sensitively as possible. in school we always hold a special assembly and some of our pupils read out poems that they have penned on the subject of remembrance. We observe our two minute silence whilst we take the time to stop, think and reflect on those past, and present who have served and continue to serve their countries with pride. this year our reception pupils made their own poppies, whilst the older classes presented their thoughts and feelings in poetry and prose. our pupils have surprising insight given their ages and show great respect for those they are thinking about. Below are just two of their poems; it was difficult to select just two from the many fine examples and we will display more of the poems in a prominent area of school for the remainder of November. this year for the first time representatives of both schools in

Fundraising evening generosity for local needs THE ROTARY CLUB of Doncaster

Sponsored Walk for Hospice

A BIG THANK you to everyone who sponsored and walked with Daisy & Amy ellison and April & elliot everatt for their sponsored walk to raise money for st Johns hospice. the children wanted to raise awareness of the wonderful work they do for people in the last stages of their life’s journey, and they did this walk in memory of rob taylor a very close friend who lost his battle to cancer last year and also for the memory of Gerry Porter a local child minder who they have all known through Northgate toddler group. Friends and family and even a horse thrown in for good measure, joined them on the 6.5 mile walk from Appy lane to the three tuns Pub in stainton and back again. A big thank you to the manager of the three tuns, who provided food for the tired walkers, who managed to raise £480 and still counting. they are going to present the cheque to st Johns in the coming weeks and are hoping by then they will have reached £500. Tickhill Parish Room

EARLY NOVEMBER AND it’s

Christmas already - or so Paula of tickhill today would have us believe! Working to deadlines can be a terrifying way of life - but with a magazine to get out almost a month in advance Paula has to do it! Anyway, she’s convinced me! so - we still have the late Night shopping event to come, when we will be open from 5.30pm to 8.30 pm, serving refreshments, mince pies and crepes, and giving you the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts, including Janet and Joan’s fabulous mince pies with other stalls selling a variety of gifts. the next ‘event’ on the Parish room calendar will be during the Carol service on Christmas eve. this annual event has been on the go for well over 20 years and is supported by many from all over the country. many of us will remember the days when santa also came and distributed sweeties to a lot of very excited children. he no longer calls but the event continues and gets bigger every year. the Parish room will be open from 5.30 pm - 8.30 pm again serving hot drinks and mince pies. its a good opportunity to come in and warm up and have a chat before, during or after the Carols! the Parish room is also available for hire, at a very reasonable rate, during the week and at weekends,

at times to suit you. our building is a perfect mix of old (ancient) and new (modern). the building is old, possibly ancient, but the facilities are definitely new and modern! As well as our regular bookings, ranging from Yoga and Pilates to children’s dance classes and Wi meetings, we have a coffee morning every saturday from 10 am - 12 noon. if you want a sneaky look at our facilities call in for coffee! Alternatively, ring me on 07840 419763. i will be happy to show you round and discuss your particular ‘needs’. Janice Birkinshaw

‘To Drive The Cold Winter Away’

membrance Day at Balby Carr day 9th November 2012

Remembrance Day visit for Wadworth pupils ON THE 9TH November the

pupils of Wadworth Primary school (Alison, tom , harry & morgan) visited Balby Carr Comprehensive for a remembrance Day Ceremony. We prepared for the ceremony by making beautiful paper poppies which including a hand written messages from all the children in our class. When we arrived at Balby Carr we were seated in the dinning room along with some children from other local primary schools, members of the local community and even a 2nd World War veteran who proudly wore many medals on his coat. We all

enjoyed refreshments before walking outside to the centre of the school where we were joined by pupils from Balby Carr, some of whom sang songs. A bugle started the two minutes of silence. Afterwards we placed our poppies on a rectangular mud patch which was surrounded by sand bags. it reminded us of the images described in the poem ‘Flanders Field’ by John mcCrae. We would like to say thank you to Balby Carr for inviting us, it was a very moving event that we will remember for a long time. By Alison & Tom.

Locked Out? Missing keys? Broken Lock? Old Inhabitants

It has been my privilege and pleasure to have lived in Tickhill for forty five years. Despite Fornow a reliable service at a Anti-Snap this long residence it is likely to take another decade or socompetitive before being accepted properly rateascontact Locks belonging. Even then I will not qualify as a true Tickhillian (or Tickhiller, as some people would Stephen Fretwell, Fitted have it). It is not possible to identify a genuine old inhabitant just by looking or by casual Master Locksmith acquaintance. The only true means of identification is to eavesdrop on a group of them talking. UNFORTUNATELY DAVE ASPEN was not able to talk at

our meeting on 18th october but his Deputy, Glyn Davies gave us an interesting, if brief account of the archaeological work carried out prior to new building work on Doncaster’s new Cultural Quarter (Waterdale as was plus!). the area has had many uses over the years from roman times including areas for feasting and cremations (possibly at the same time!) to practice trenches for training recruits during WW1. thank you Glyn. our membership is now over 140 (the highest it has ever been this early in the season) and we are particularly pleased to welcome many new members. you will find your membership of the society rewarding. Contributing to the society’s work can often increase that sense of reward so if you feel you can spare a few hours occasionally to help with our research work you will be most welcome – and you don’t need a great knowledge of history either. Currently our two main projects are the preparation of a new local history book of tickhill and a “living memories” project for which we are short of people willing to give a few hours of their time occasionally to record the memories of some of the town’s older residents. if you think you might like to help with this please ring Lorna Payne on 750141 or email her tickhilldhc@ talktalk.net she will be pleased to tell you more about the project.

Tickhill Town Council - December 2012 AS YOU READ this December Newsletter you will probably be well into your Christmas plans and activities. We will be about to have the light switch on and the late Night shopping event on 29th November, which is firmly fixed on the Council Agenda. We are proud that Businesses, residents and friends really show the true spirit and join in the festivities that put tickhill to the forefront in the Doncaster Area. Council business carries on throughout the seasons but does slow down a little at this time of year. the first meeting in the New Year is our budget meeting at which we discuss finances and workloads for the year. this year one of our projects was to upgrade the kitchen and the disabled facilities at the Pavilion. We can now say we have achieved this project, on time and on budget. thank you to A.r.K.e. Construction who won the contract and worked tirelessly to meet our programme. the kitchen is now up and running with much more space making it much more user friendly. (Do not forget to book your parties etc and make full use of the new facilities) A special thank you to margaret, our clerk and Nigel my Deputy for their continuous commitment at the Pavilion and all the unpaid work they put in. We must also thank the hard work of the tickhill in Bloom Group who, despite the weather and the theft of 55 plants still managed to achieve a silver Gilt Award in the Doncaster in Bloom Community Group category. if you see anyone taking plants or a garden suddenly transformed please let us know. For a small donation we can easily grow a few more plants which would save spoiling the flower beds. During the year we have adapted to meet the Neighbourhood management team and Borough 64 TICKHILL TODAY

Councillors at meetings other than the monthly council meeting. this now leaves us with the full fifteen minutes Public session entirely for the public to raise their issues. if you have any concerns please come along, you will be made most welcome.
