This is actually the 6th birthday issue of Bessacarr & Cantley Today, which has been dropping through letterboxes every couple of months since November 2013. Once again, the year is racing by, the clocks have changed, Bonfire Night is upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner. Lots of activities and events are being promoted on these pages – we are lucky to live in such active communities. Are you getting organised for Christmas yet? As usual I’m not! You may wish to consider anything you wish to achieve or get done before Christmas and get yourself booked in with the many businesses offering their services within these pages. For many things there will still be time, but don’t wait too long! Don’t forget to tell them where you found them when you contact advertisers. Here we are hurtling towards the end of the year and preparations have gathered pace for our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate….see below. We have received donations from some wonderful people who have taken our prostate cancer appeal to heart. Darren held a coffee morning in his garden (with marquees to shelter from the rain!), plus a raffle with prizes donated from local firms, and raised £550! Thank you so much for all your hard work. We have had donations from people celebrating special birthdays and anniversaries and requesting donations in lieu of presents. Our regular coffee morning ladies in Hatfield also continue to support us for which we are very grateful. Space limits us to mention everyone, but all our latest news is on the website, although we appreciate not everyone has a computer. At the time of writing (early October) we had reached £33,200. Our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre starts Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. We have chosen some lovely new tree decorations this year so please come along and see us, have a chat and buy a token in memory of your loved one. If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to be a volunteer please do get in touch with us. After a very successful summer playing at the Pavilion in Bircotes we have now moved indoors for the winter. Over the summer we took 2 teams to a tournament in Lincolnshire where we had a great day, ﬁnishing in 2nd and 6th position overall.

The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests, (see www.probusonline.org/ danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring, Autumn and Bowling Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre green. On August 19 John Brown, the Vice-President of the Club, spoke about property surveying in Doncaster, which was a fascinating insight into a subject which touches many of us at some times in our lives. Tony Cowley brought his 1919 Sunbeam motor cycle with him as the centre piece for his talk on September 2on about “Vintage Motorcycles”. Then on September 16 Philip Caine took us through his career from hotel chef to project managing installation in worldwide oil fields and platforms going from ‘Barrow to Baghdad’. And at the beginning of September Malcolm Frost told us about the project to recreate the ‘Cock o’ the North” steam engine. In November our speakers will be Mick Burdis with “The Stephen Lawrence Enquiry” on the 4th, and on 18th Keith Lumley with “Breaching the Beaches and Landings”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

The Sanctuary is full to overflowing as usual, however we have been really busy month rehoming the most beautiful dogs & cats that have come to us for many reasons. Cantley Community Library - The Centre@Cantley The Library continues to be busy and well used. There have been enquiries from a number of outside agencies about available space for face-to-face meetings with their users. In response, we are now moving ahead with plans to create a small private space and hope that this will become available in the not too distant future. We had a fund-raising coﬀee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support at the end of September and raised £233.15. Many thanks to everyone who supported this and to our Library volunteers for their hard work.

Doncaster Spanish Society are presenting the second event on their Winter / Spring calendar entitled – The Life and Works of the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) - undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary talents of her era. Her relatively short life, was dogged by a prolonged serious injury, disease, and a somewhat troubled marriage. Through all this adversity, she triumphed to produce works of stunning surrealism. This is an illustrated talk, given by society members Maria Theresa Sikora and Jean Clark, in both English and Spanish. There’s no need to understand the language, but it’s still a chance to improve on what you do know for those who can speak a little.

If Spanish culture and language are of interest to you, then this is an opportunity not to be missed. Please come along, you are most welcome. New classes Hello everyone. Just a few lines to keep you up to date with the latest happenings, here at Cantley Community Centre. We have a number of new classes on offer here at Cantley Community centre this term we hope that they will be of interest to you all. Messy Play at Cantley Community Centre - Bang Crunch Mess Wednesday 13th November - 11am Celebrate the colours, smells and sounds of Autumn this November! Sparkle, fizz and pop with all your messy favourites including firework rocket rice, harvest festival mud and our shredded paper bonfire. So, mums and dads, boys and girls- as the leaves are falling let’s grab our hot chocolate and marshmallows and scrunch those crunchy leaves and acorns. Messy Play at Cantley Community Centre - Messy Christmas Wednesday 11th December - 11am

Jingle mess, jingle mess, jingle all the way! Don your Christmas jumpers and join the best festive party of the season! Whether you’ve been naughty or nice this year, everyone can have a jolly messy time with us at Messy Christmas. With fun activities like reindeer dust, Brussels sprout rolling, candy cane rice and our messy festive treats such as angel foam, Santa goo and Christmas Pud! All you have to do is come along, mess around and leave the cleaning up to us! Those of you who are bake oﬀ fans, may be interested in Bridgette’s cake decorating class on Tuesday evening, strictly come dancing more your thing? Why not try Joanne’s Ballroom & Latin classes on Wednesday evening.
