Welcome

to the SEPTEMBER 2013

edition of Tickhill Today.

september has come around already! actually at the time of writing we are barely into august, however, in line with my declaration that i would be taking some time off this summer to spend with my family while they still have long summer holidays, the september magazines were packed off to the printers early august and our suitcases were packed for our holiday in spain!

Cherishing special times is a bit of an art though. It’s so easy to get embroiled with practical life stuff that the fun things can get overlooked and before you know it you’ve blinked and they’re back at school in shiny new shoes and cardies that are too big. So as the nights start to close in why not resolve to have some family time – whether you still feel frazzled from the school holidays or whether you are child-free, have a think about those close to you and book in some time to just ‘be’. And whilst you’re at it, check out all of our wonderful advertisers. A bit like a new school uniform that takes time to grow into, our magazine is always evolving but also has much that is familiar too! The october magazines will be delivered from 27th september and anything you would like including, should be with me by Friday 13th september.

Tickhill Cricket Club This month we focus on the First Xi captained by ashley Fiddler, who compete in division 1 of the south Yorkshire senior Cricket League sponsored by Ben Bailey Homes. As the season passes the half way stage the team lie second in the league and as we go to press have just been beaten in the final of the Mick Savage Cup. There are two places open for promotion and there is an air of optimism in the Club that we can regain our place in the Premier League. Mitchell Phelps from Australia has been an outstanding success and

is the leading wicket taker in all 5 divisions with 51 wickets; he has also made significant contributions with the bat. Alex Rowland heads the Division 1 bowling averages with 32 wickets at an average of 9.4. Lee Bradshaw, Phelps and Aaron Haycock have all scored over 300 runs and with James Doyle having his best ever season behind the stumps we are well positioned to make the final push. details of all our fixtures and what’s on at the Club can be found on our website at www. tickhill.play-cricket.com.T

KNOCKOUT Competition 2013 PLaTe seMi FiNaL 22Nd JULY Tickhill institute lost wickets regularly against roy Nelson’s tight, accurate bowling [4 for 13] and when Justin dickinson reached 25 there was no-one left to bat so he did not have to retire. He was last man out on 37 with the total at 98. The Ancient Juniors also found runs hard to get with only Tom Johnson surviving for long and retiring on 26. He came back in at 90 for 6 which quickly became 90 for 7 and last man stands. With just one ball left it was 97 for 7 and a single would have won the match, having lost less wickets, but they tried for a second run and there was a run out to tie the game on 98 for 8. 12 12

Planning to Plant Last month i wrote about garden design, and how to decide on which style you would like to choose for your own garden, and more importantly whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. as promised, in this month’s article we’re focusing on softening the design with planting. Well-designed gardens are a successful blend of hard and soft landscaping (e.g. paving and plants), but not until recently did it occur to me how you can achieve a great effect with very little in terms of hard landscaping. Whether you are thinking about a new garden, total re-design, or just want to refresh a single border, it is important to draw yourself a planting plan. It’s not as scary as it sounds, and is really just like a large ‘paint by numbers’. A plan will avoid expensive mistakes made by impulse purchases, and will reduce maintenance in the long term. The resulting garden will also look so

much fuller, the plants much happier and healthier, and you will feel proud of your creation instead of frustrated with your lack of ability. First of all, begin by enlisting the help of a gardening friend (or passerby) with a tape measure, and get a blueprint of what is there now. Measure the boundaries of the borders - note any trees and hedges, fences and walls, shady spots, and those in full sun too. If you know which way the sun moves around the garden you will have much more success in choosing the right plants. Draw the plan on paper, ideally to scale. 1:50 is a good size for the average garden (where 50cm in reality is 1cm on paper). Then, using a selection of larger and smaller coins to draw around, fill the border with circles, starting at the rear of the border with the large shrubs, and work

TOP TIPS

Jobs to do this month include: september is a great time to plant, but here are some other jobs you can do at this time of the year:  Clip hedges for the final time this year.  Sow lawn seed to thicken 20 20

towards the front with herbaceous perennials and annuals. You can then layer bulbs in for extra spring and summer colour. Think about colour, the times of year they flower and the eventual size they will grow too. It’s a good idea to arm yourself with a good plant book, or simply search the internet for inspiration. T

or establish a new lawn. Sow the last batch of lettuce. Plant some potatoes in the greenhouse for Christmas. Net ponds to prevent leaves falling into it.

WHY YOU SHOULD REVIEW YOUR WILL REGULARLY Although your will hopefully have reflected how you wanted to dispose of your assets at the time, circumstances may well have changed. • Children, or indeed grandchildren, may have been born, friends or family may have moved on, or simply moved out of your life .You need therefore to consider whether they are still to feature in your will, particularly if they are named as executors. • Your financial position may have altered dramatically, whether for the better or worse, making gifts of sums of money totally inappropriate. • You may have specifically bequeathed property which has subsequently been sold. • The named executors may have died or simply become unsuitable due to their age or ill-health • You may have divorced and as your will is then read deleting any reference to your ex-husband or wife, it may make rather a nonsense of your will • You may have married, or re-married. • Marriage revokes your existing will, unless it is clearly made in contemplation of marriage. It appears that this is still not universally known and the resulting effects can be devastating. Contrary to the surviving spouse being sole

For more information or to arrange an appointment

beneficiary named in the will, he or she would only be entitled to the first £250,000 outright, sharing the remainder with say adult children from their spouse’s previous marriage or relationship in accordance with the intestacy rules. • You may have been a client of Atteys Solicitors which recently went into Administration and they were holding your Will. Changes in the law may make it desirable to change your will. For instance now that it is possible to transfer the unused part of the nil rate band for inheritance tax from one spouse to the other, you may decide that there is no longer any need to have a nil rate band discretionary trust in your will. We will be pleased to discuss any queries you may have on your particular situation. All references above to married couples do of course apply equally to civil partnerships.

The Sun Shone The sun shone, bunting fluttered and the smiles on the faces of the children, proud parents and family members said it all. sports day was a great success!

Races were run, points marked and taking part was celebrated throughout the day as the children of Tickhill St Marys got involved in the Triple Jump, Javelin, Standing Long Jump, Shot Put, Parachute Games, Egg and Spoon, Relay, Obstacle Races and all manner of sporting activities culminating on the race track in the afternoon in front of family and friends.

Thanks

everyone at st Mary’s school would like to thank the Tickhill Notice Board Fund for the generous donation towards tables and seating for the new garden.

The money was added to that raised by the school council on World Book Day and then matched by the PTA and the result was enough tables to seat an entire class in one go! They were delivered and assembled in time to add to the party atmosphere during the last week of term. Thank you T 40 40

TICKHILL TODAY

The PTA provided cakes, drinks and slushies and the party atmosphere continued as past pupils and parents arrived to join the picnic and celebrations for Mrs Boaler. A flash mob took some people by surprise as pupils, parents and staff danced their way across the playground to the sound of Glee singing “Don’t stop believin’” A large banner appeared, carried by past pupils, as the dance ended to thunderous applause. Flowers and gifts were given, speeches were made and Mrs Boaler was quite overwhelmed by all the fuss. The Leavers Service in Church on Friday was a beautiful way of wishing our Year 6 children good luck as they continue their journey on to new schools and new beginnings. The children wanted to include Mrs Boaler on her last day and sang a beautiful song –“We are the Young” for her as a way of saying Thank you for all

her hard work at St Mary’s. Leavers 2013 teddies were also presented to all of year 6 and to Mrs Boaler! We wish Mrs Boaler and our Year 6 pupils’ health, happiness and good fortune as they continue along their chosen paths and thank everyone involved in the last week of term celebrations for making it such a memorable week. The last week of term disappeared amidst a maze of activity and I was overwhelmed, not only with the activities which were being “secretly” planned around me (My taking Y6 to the Isle of Wight was very convenient for the organisers!) but with the wealth of kind words and good wishes sent and brought in person. It was lovely to see so many past pupils who came to say good bye, both on the Wednesday, when the sports day extravaganza took place, and also on my final morning, when colleagues has organised a “drop in and say goodbye to Mrs B “ session. The week was a fine balance between everyone saying there had to be a “do” and me trying to persuade them that, if it had to be, could it be very low key please. How delighted I was, that the balance was achieved. I felt such great pleasure, not to mention huge surprise, at some of the events and activities. As I would find it impossible to thank everyone in person, I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone – staff, children, governors, parents and carers, grandparents, past pupils and members of the Tickhill community with whom I have come into contact since April 2001. I cannot mention everyone by name, but I thank you all. I would like, however, to say a special thank you to 2 people who must have been worn out with the hard work, planning and purchasing, not to mention trying to keep secrets from someone known to be everywhere in the building! Rachel Jaques, the Deputy Head, who, supported by the school team, coordinated many parts of the week, and Paula Mickley, who as a member of the PTA and a massively supportive governor of the school, ran herself ragged to make sure that I had a memorable end to my career. It certainly was! However, the time has come, the walrus said ... and so goodbye and many, many thanks to each and every one of you. Jayne L Boaler, Former Head Teacher st Mary’s school. dex’s Midnight runners, are back from the first ever Travel Trade Crusade (TTC) and what a fantastic event, i understand it’s on target to raise £50K for various charities. With your support our team (one of 27) raised around £1500.00 TTC 2013 proved to be quite a challenge, completing 2900km door to door. Dex behaved impeccably even completing 2 laps at the Nurburgring, the long distances without doors, roof or windscreen was very draining, we are thinking of claiming for industrial deafness. The weather was too good, having to keep covered up to prevent being burnt to a crisp, thankfully it didn’t rain. Thanks again for your generosity and support. Tickhill Neighbourhood plan - Process underway

important! By the time you receive this copy of Tickhill Today, the formal process towards the adoption of the Neighbourhood Plan (NP) will have begun. The draft has been accessible on the Tickhill Town Council website since mid-July with the opportunity for any comments to be sent to TickhillNP@gmail.com or in writing (preferably) to any member of the NP Committee or town councillor. a hard copy of the NP is available in the Library. additional material, such as maps, will be added as it is prepared.

Please send in your views by September 27th when the draft Plan will be further revised before being sent on to Doncaster MBC for the next stage. We really would like to hear from you, even if it is just to give us support! It may be helpful at this stage to repeat some of what the Neighbourhood Plan can and can’t do. It can propose policies controlling land use and building (which the local planning authority will have to follow if our NP is approved in the referendum) and it can present

the community’s aspirations in such areas as employment, traffic, environment, community facilities and flooding. This will assist the Town Council in pressing other authorities to act or to provide finance. But it does not carry any provision of finance with it, although not everything in the NP requires money to deliver. Although public comments have been made on

such topics as the NHS, education and crime prevention, these areas are not generally appropriate to a Neighbourhood Plan. So, to repeat, please look at the draft NP and let us know your ideas, anything we have missed out, any positive reactions, by 27th September. John Hoare. T

Retford Lions Club T Fest it having come to light that the Family Fun day at The oak on the day of the scarecrow Festival was in aid of ‘Help the Heroes’ we have donated the proceeds of our coconut shy to the charity.

Ten Lions attended the funeral of former Lion Ted Elliott, providing a guard of honour at St Mary’s Church as his coffin was taken in and out of church. The church was full of friends wishing to celebrate the life of a wellrespected supporter of ‘Tickhill Life’ and our Lions Club was honoured to have been chosen by Ted’s family to receive donations. Thank you Ann. After thirty years of assembling wooden panels, decorated by the late Henry Bletcher, on to a farm

trailer loaned to us by the Foers family to create our Christmas float, we have for some weeks been building a new float based on a caravan chassis. Work is progressing well and the new float will benefit from the latest available LED lights and electrics. We are indebted to Lions Ken Garner and Ken Green for their efforts.

First Big Event of the term We are really excited for Brownies to start again this month; it’s going to be a busy term!

Our first big event of the term is the Pack Holiday to Walesby. We’ll be making rafts (and then seeing if they work) and going through a cave maze along with the normal Pack Holiday games. As spaces are limited we are planning on having either a film night or a sleepover – stay-up-over – in the Scout Hut in September for those that can’t go. 2014 is The Big Brownie Birthday, the 100th Birthday of Brownies. Girl Guides were created in 1910 when a group of girls gate crashed the first Boy Scout Rally at Crystal Palace and asked for ‘something for the girls’. Four years later in 1914 the next guiding section for girls under 11, the Rosebuds, was formed. The name changed to Brownies in 1915 after complaints from the girls who didn’t like their name. The name comes from a story about Tommy and Betty by Juliana Horatia Ewing written in 1870, they learn that children can be helpful Brownies. The story was in the Brownie Handbook and now a version of it is in the Becoming a Brownie book. Those of you who were Brownies may remember it, we still reference the story in our Promise ceremonies. It 54 54

also led to the motto ‘Lend a Hand’. There are lots of activities planned for Brownies across the country to celebrate The Big Brownie Birthday. These include a Challenge pack, a Star Quest and a Stay-Away. Hopefully we will be able to take part in these with Brownies across Doncaster as well as on our in meetings. We have also been encouraged to do something special to mark the Birthday, ideas from Girl Guiding include Leaders getting their Pack Holiday license and going away for the first time or a Pack Holiday or trip somewhere new. We have decided that we would like to take the Brownies to Disneyland Paris in 2014. We are currently getting quotes from various travel companies and weighing up the cost of going by coach or by train. At the moment it looks like going by Eurostar for two nights in the February half-term is the best option. We are going to need a lot of help to take as many Brownies as want to go as the cost is a lot more than a normal Pack

Holiday. Any fundraising ideas would be appreciated. So far we have asked the Lions if they will help us organise a race night (if we can do this please do come along even if you have no connection to Brownies, we will be advertising any events we do) and we are claiming back any gift aid we can from subs. Plans for the term include bag packing at the supermarkets and bake sales. The easiest way for you to help us get to Disneyland is to register at easyfundraising.org.uk. All it wants is your name and email address, if you could please support ‘Girlguiding NEE – 32nd Doncaster Brownie Unit 67th Doncaster (Tickhill) Unit’ (search for 32nd Doncaster Brownies). Then when you shop online if you log in to easyfundraising first and then go to Tesco, Asda, Amazon, Ebay, next or any of the other 2000 shopping sites through their retailers list we will get a percentage of what you spend. It won’t cost you anything but the Brownies will benefit. Some of the best ones are the insurance companies who will give us a donation of up to £30 when you get your car or home insurance from them. Quite a few of the holiday companies are registered, even a 1.25% donation from the cost of a holiday is a lot to us.

Please look out for our fundraising activities and thank you for any help you can give us in making the Big Brownie Birthday as memorable as possible for the Brownies.T

Tickhill Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2013 The audit for the Council’s Finances is now complete and 2012/13 have just been finalised. As a legal requirement we must advertise the accounts and the certificate has been displayed as required by law on the Tickhill Town Council Notice board and on our Website, alongside the financial statement. Our Financial position has been consolidated over the past 12months and hopefully with prudence and careful spending we will remain in a healthy position. Each month the accounts for payments are prepared and distributed to all Councillors and an up to date statement of receipts and payments for the financial year to date are also submitted. Payments due that month are provided and set out against budget. The finances are monitored both monthly and quarterly. At year end the Internal Auditor scrutinises all transactions and bank information and it is then sent to Government Approved External Auditors. As you are probably all aware it is the intention to bring the Pavilion up to a more usable standard by updating two of the toilets. As monies allow, it will have to be step by step. I have been able to make savings in many areas to facilitate this, mainly in the staffing area. Much reduction has been made also with my own home being within the town thus reducing travel and postage costs. As a result of this we are now in a strong position to employ our long awaited litter picker/lengths person. We are now beginning to see the fruits of our labours and hopefully the Pavilion facilities and Tickhill Town area are showing signs of improvements. Please be aware that during 62 62

TICKHILL TODAY

the October half term holiday the Pavilion will be closed whilst some refurbishment takes place. I have included in this edition of Tickhill Today a full break down of our financial position. T
