Grand Opening Saturday June 30th!!

Another school year is coming to an end, and another set of young people are heading towards a change of nursery/school/ college/apprenticeship/further education/ employment. Leaving the place that they will have hopefully been very happy for many years can be a sad time for both children and their parents but it is also a positive time when we can look forward to what is to come and the new opportunities available. Whatever change you or your loved ones may be facing over the coming months, I hope it will be a change for the better.

community Community Hi I have just been in touch with John who has arranged for me to email over to you details for an advert to be produced for the January edition of the Retford Life. I have attached our new logo and old leaflet. Please could you change

the old leaflet by: - physiotherapy clinic Your local

GETTING STRONGER... The subject of getting stronger has cropped up in several ways recently. The situation that occurs most often is when talking to patients about how many reps of an exercise they need to do in order to strengthen a certain muscle. I’ve also recently discussed how to keep elderly relatives strong and I’ve chatted with my lovely friend this week about reclaiming the strength in her body that has been wiped out by cancer treatment. Regardless of the situation, the general principle remains the same – you need to ‘work to fatigue’ which means that whether LWȇV D VSHFLČ´ F H[HUFLVH RU D IXQFWLRQDO DFWLYLW\ you need to do enough of it to feel physically tired (like when your legs go ‘juddery’ after tons of stairs!). This places increased stress on your muscles which then respond by becoming stronger in order to meet the demand being placed on them. As my children are frequently reminded whilst out hiking‌tired legs are to be embraced as it means they will wake up stronger! So, when it comes to reps – the answer to “How many shall I do?â€? will depend on whether I’m talking to a rugby player in their prime or a crochet loving librarian of mature age. The point at which their PXVFOHV EHFRPH WLUHG ZLOO EH YHU\ GLÎ? HUHQW When it comes to generalised weakness DÎ? HFWLQJ IXQFWLRQ WKHQ WKH PRUH WKH DFWLYLW\ is perfomed, the better the body is going to be able to cope. In the case of elderly relatives this is perhaps counterintuitive because when we see loved ones struggling then of course we want to step in and help. But the saying “Use it or lose itâ€? really is true!

A Very Special Visitor

Christina spent a morning with our pupils; they found hearing about her work interesting and absorbing, and had lots of questions.

On Friday 9th June 2018 we hosted our second Race for Life in school, which was once again very well supported by the families and friends

We were delighted to receive a visit from an ex-pupil, Dr. Christina Smith recently. Christina can well remember her time at Estfeld and being taught Science by her teacher Mrs Driver. Her interest in the solar system was born and Christina went onto pursue a career in Science and gained her doctorate in Astrophysics at Manchester University. She now works in Canada for NASA and is currently studying Mars with the help of the Opportunity Rover that you may have seen and heard about on the BBC News reports. Dr.

They learned a lot about Dr. Christina’s work on Mars and her career path and how she came to be working with NASA – an inspiration for us all. We are delighted and proud to hear that one of our pupils has achieved her career goal and is working with such a prestigious organisation. We are very grateful that Dr. Christina was able to some time with us and she has promised to return when she is back in the UK next. We can’t wait!

George J Johnson There are times when exhibitions leave you amazed and in awe at the skill and ability of the artist or craftsman and the Glass show at the Harley is one of those. You have another couple of weeks to catch this exhibition and every piece of work in this group exhibition, which has been put together by the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, demonstrates what a mysterious and dextrous material glass is. Really interesting. However the Lithopane show, also at the Harley, (Dear Reader, you will perhaps remember that I mentioned this new word ‘Lithopane’ a couple of months ago) was a huge disappointment and demonstrated that it doesn’t matter how much you dress up your art-practice technology in fancy language (and the particular technology involved here was as basic as industrial ceramic printing which you will find on the mug from which you are now drinking your tea) if the artwork is no more interesting than a snap shot, then that’s it – it’s just a snap shot. I have it on several good authorities, and by the time you will read this, I too will have been, that the big summer show GUISEPPE PENONE at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is terrific. Take a picnic, make a day of it. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Until 29 July The Doncaster New Fringe ‘OPEN EXHIBITION’ and from 14th July - 9th September ‘DONCASTER ART CLUB ANNUAL EXHIBITION.’ 14th July – 16th September ‘ENDANGERED AND EXTINCT: RECYCLED SCULPTURES’ by Val Hunt. The show is made up of birds, flowers, fish, reptiles that have gone or are on the critical list. Everything in the exhibition is made from throw away materials, to promote creative recycling and raise awareness of why species are disappearing at such an alarming rate. LIFE DRAWING: 14 July 11-1pm and 2 - 4pm ART HISTORY LECTURE: 6 July ‘ALL AT SEA’ The coastline around Britain has provided a wealth of material for artists. This lecture brings together a selection, and includes work by among others Laura Knight, Lamorna Birch and Wilson Steer. Lectures take place at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, starting at 10.30 am and lasting for an hour and a half. Each lecture 28 TICKHILL TODAY

Hello from the Mayflower Sanctuary Bawtry,

Finding a forever home

At last summer is with us and we can all enjoy al fresco dining with friends. It is also a time that we at the Sanctuary are able to make the most of our fundraising. We have a couple of events pending and I hope that you are able to join us and have fun in the sun. The last Sunday in every month we hold a Table Top Sale in reception where there are lots of bargains to be had this starts at 10 am. The 1st July is our annual dog show at Tithes Lane in Tickhill this starts at 11am there are lots of classes to suit any dog large or small rescue or not, it is the taking part that matters. There will also be lots of stall and a BBQ. Don’t forget to bring your rug or picnic chair and enjoy your day. If you are not able to make that date we have something special for you on 29th July start time is 12pm Summer Fayre at the Mayflower. There will be stalls, BBQ , raffle, we also have a kennel assistant that is a green fingered wiz so his plant stall as last year will be amazing. This year is our Sanctuaries 15th year Anniversary and we are hoping to have a special event to commemorate this, so watch this space. We would now like to do some thank you’s to everyone that made our Mayflower Ball a huge success, starting with The Crown Hotel Bawtry. The food and service were amazing as was the resident DJ, who went that one step further and helped us dance the night away until the early hours. Lee Maddison played guitar keeping everyone entertained through dinner.

Sunil was our auctioneer for the evening and did an amazing job. We are all excitedly waiting to see the photos in Eastside Magazine and thank you to the girls from Eastside for attending. Big thank you to everyone that bought tickets and made the night special. Also thanks go to all business’s that supported us, we had some amazing Auction prizes, Holiday Abroad, Aircraft Flight, Training Flight, Top Class Hotel Stays, Toboggan on Real Snow from Snow Dome and too many more to mention. Raffle prizes from BetsyGray Hair Salon Tickhill, Mayflower Restaurant Austerfield, Ship Inn Newington, Bawtry Caravans, Wild Life Park, Hayfield Marketing, Hayfield Lakes and so many more. A HUGE THANK YOU everyone that contributed and made this event fantastic also raising lots of money to make sure this amazing rescue centre is able to continue with their special work. Best Wishes Margaret Godley

Good with cats: Yes Good with children: Yes Katy was being offered as ‘free to good home’ on a wellknown internet selling site. Fortunately she was rescued before she fell into wrong hands and is now looking for a new home. Katy is an absolute treasure to have around. She can be a little nervous on first meetings, but once she gets to know you she is extremely sociable and purrs like a tractor. She just needs a little time and patience but the wait is well worth it. Once she gains confidence her true personality comes shining through. Katy is also good with other cats and children. She has met dogs and initial signs are encouraging. All she needs is a home to call her own where she will be safe and loved. Is that too much to ask for?

The Friends of Doncaster Museums This is an exciting time as Doncaster progresses an ambitious new project to develop a multipurpose cultural hub alongside the existing museum on Chequer Road. The new space will incorporate many of the features of the existing building whilst freeing up the 1964 museum as a study centre and research space. The Friends of Doncaster Museums are a group of people drawn from across the borough who meet on a regular basis throughout the year to enjoy a varied programme of talks and visits. We also raise funds which can be used to support acquisitions to the collection at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery and also at Cusworth Hall. We have just held our Annual General Meeting where we reviewed a very successful year. Our GRQDWLRQbKHOSHG VHFXUH D ODUJH Lottery Fund Grant which meant that the Medieval Conisbrough Court Rolls were acquired by the Archive Service and by part funding the conservation of three Brazilian paintings donated to the museum after the Second World War, we attracted a large anonymous donation followed by funding by the Brazilian Embassy in London which ensured they could be included in a major exhibition in the capital. Looking forward, we have an exciting and varied programme over the next year with guest speakers including our own Gervase Phinn, the renowned Egyptologist Joann Fletcher DQG WKH &R &KLHI &XUDWRU RI Historic Royal Palaces, author and broadcaster Tracy Borman. We have also committed to raise the funds to pay the subscription of Heritage Doncaster to the Contemporary 36 TICKHILL TODAY

DONCASTER YOUTH CHARITY SEEKS INDEPENDENT TRUSTEES EXPECT Youth, Doncaster’s innovative children’s and youth services charity, is seeking to expand its current Board through the appoint of additional voluntary independent trustees to progress its agenda for future growth and development. EXPECT Youth began in 2017, with the aim of improving the lives of children and young people across Doncaster. It was initially set up as a collaboration between key partners, including Doncaster Council, Club Doncaster Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce. On the back of this, EXPECT Youth won the Success Through Partnership Working category at the Doncaster Business Awards in 2017. It has also just secured a major new contract with the Department for Education to deliver Essential Life Skills services to youngsters in the town. EXPECT Youth is about to formally achieve charitable status and is now looking to strengthen its leadership and governance arrangements by appointing additional Independent Trustees to its board. The charity is hoping to attract volunteer candidates with board level experience in a similar role, a good understanding of children’s and youth services, and a passion and commitment towards the communities of Doncaster and South Yorkshire. 3HWHU 1RUPDQ 6WUDWHJLF 'HYHORSPHQW 'LUHFWRUbRI (;3(&7 <RXWK VDLG ȊΖQ RXU Č´ UVW \HDU (;3(&7 <RXWK KDV DOUHDG\ PDGH D GLÎ? Thank the Judas in your life

Dear Friends, I wonder if I can use this month to continue to talk about the Lent Course I participated LQ 6KHÉ? HOG WKLV \HDU At the penultimate session, we discussed, “The mission of Judasâ€?. To be honest, it ZDV D YHU\ GLÉ? FXOW VHVVLRQ for me. However, I found out some pearls of truth which I had not thought about. I came out of the session thinking, “well, if Judas had not betrayed Jesus, what would have happened to my sins?â€? “How would Jesus have ended up on the tree on Good Friday?â€? Someone would respond by saying that God would have found a ‘plan B’. But I wonder if ‘plan B’ would have been the best for us. Judas sold his boss for a few pieces of silver. Yes, that is not acceptable in any circumstance. On the other hand, I realised that Jesus needed Judas Iscariot’s schemes as part of his mission on earth – to save us from our sins. Here is now the take. Each one of us may have a Judas in our lives. It could be in your workplace, social network, church, leisure or family life. There can be someone who would be a ‘thorn in your Čľ HVKȇ %XW Ζ ZRQGHU LI \RX have realised that this person has been placed there to challenge you and possibly, help bring out the best in you. is not acceptable and must be dealt with. Rather, it could be the one who criticises your every move. For instance, s/ he is never appreciative of what you do or say. Or, s/ he complains about your work or even sometimes, the grammar in your speech or reports. Sometimes, it could be a betrayal by your partner of friend. I wonder if you have considered forgiving that person for making your life ‘like hell’. Secondly, I wonder if you can go an extra mile by thanking that person for making you who you are. ΖW LV GLÉ? FXOW LVQȇW LW" +RZHYHU the bible reminds us that Jesus forgave all those who, directly or indirectly, caused him to die on the cross, including Judas. His reason was that they did not know what they were doing. Similarly, these people may not know that, in trying to make your life ‘like hell’, they are rather bringing out the best in you and promoting you. This month, I wonder if you can identify the Judas in your life and pray for him/her. Ask God to bless that person. Don’t forget to say a word of thanks to them please. It will do your soul good.

Complaints of speeding are common across the district and we have a number of areas to visit, but we will return to Tickhill as soon as possible.

In Tickhill, we recorded two residential burglaries. YOUR COUNCILLORS CLLR J. BERGIN (CHAIRMAN)

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - July 2018

Tickhill Town Council are disappointed to announce the resignation of two of their caretakers. We wish both well for the future. Adverts will be on the website and on the notice boards late June/ early July. A temporary caretaker has been appointed in the interim and can be contacted on The retiring clerk Mrs CanningsClough will be contactable still on 07591176530 for a short while and the new clerk, Mrs Maxine Booker on 07591179658.

TRAFFIC – BE WARNED! This is a difficult area in which to make progress! The Town Council, following up the Neighbourhood Plan, wants to see more pedestrian refuges and measures to check the speed of traffic through the town centre, especially down Northgate where crossing by the pedestrian refuge can be dicing with death! However, Tickhill Town Council has not made progress with Doncaster’s Highway Department, who say that the speed limit isn’t being broken; people’s perceptions of danger do not appear to count and there haven’t (fortunately) been any fatalities. Anecdotally through traffic is increasing on the west-east route (Westgate, Castlegate, Sunderland Street). When Tickhill produced the Neighbourhood Plan, it was hoped that the construction of the Great Yorkshire Way (M18 to A638, Bawtry Road) would lead to a diversion of through traffic away from the A631 which goes through the busy main streets of Tickhill and Maltby and winds between the two towns. Motorists who have tried it say that it is definitely quicker, if a bit longer, to use the new alternative route. However, change doesn’t 66 TICKHILL TODAY

seem to be happening. Tickhill Town Council have asked for a downgrading to B road for the west-east route but are told this is most unlikely (the road goes through many local authorities) and would be opposed by Highways England. The alternative is to seek signing on the M18 to divert traffic onto the new route, to persuade satnavs to take note of the better alternative, and to press DMBC for more measures to slow through traffic. This would over time make a real difference. This has now become a matter of some urgency because of developments in Harworth. Tickhill Town Council hear that Bassetlaw is handling a planning application for c.650 houses adjoining our boundary off the A631 Bawtry Road, to which it would have direct access. Protests are unlikely to stop this going ahead. The adjoining site has another 250 houses going up. Add up to 1000 houses on the former colliery site and Harworth is going to produce many more cars driven to Doncaster or Sheffield for work or leisure. The impact on Stripe Road junction, already over capacity and prohibitively costly to improve (Tickhill Town Council have discussed this with officers), and on the Buttercross, which consultants admit has significant rush hour queues, will be obvious. Doncaster borough and Tickhill in particular, will pick up the costs in increased traffic and delays from developments over the border over which we have no control. The purpose of this article is to keep you informed of what is going on. It is difficult to be optimistic about the overall situation, Tickhill Town Council we will continue to press for whatever measures will improve safety and quality of life for those who live and work in the town.

Tickhill Community Library Tickhill Library became a community Library in February 2017, and on June 7th we looked back on the achievements in the period to 31st March 2018, and shared some of our plans for the future of our Library.

The Library’s own fund raising is supported through regular coee mornings held on the last Wednesday of each month. Publicity of our events takes place through posters, notices in Tickhill Today and on our Facebook page, please follow us!

The success of the Library is heavily dependent on a committed and enthusiastic group of volunteers. We are fortunate to have this team of nearly 60 in place. Lesley Nicholson has been instrumental in the development of the Library and in leading and supporting these volunteers.

We have maintained the availability of the Library’s toilets for use by the general public. These were initially cleaned by volunteers but now through a grant awarded by Tickhill Town Council a self-employed cleaner undertakes these duties.

A writing group continues to meet fortnightly, Story times on Mondays and Tuesdays and book clubs throughout the month. The number of book clubs meeting in the Library has increased from 5 to 8. including two groups for children and young adults. The Summer Reading Challenge is a key focus. Volunteers liaise closely with both primary schools in Tickhill and encourage younger readers to take part. In 2017 the target set by DMBC was to seek 125 entrants, Tickhill Community Library achieved 150 with over 100 children completing the challenge. A diverse range of children’s summer activities were also organised. Volunteer Eve Baines has established a sensory story time for children with additional needs, and has created an “easy readâ€? selection of books. Other new features include weekly musical Jam Tots sessions for pre-school children and Italian classes. Numerous talks and presentations for have been arranged for example authors Lynda Stacey, Victoria Howard, and a favourite has been Lucy Adlington from The History Wardrobe. The Library has a meeting room for local people and community groups. As well as the many groups already mentioned, it is used by the Tickhill Local History Society for their weekly history class. There are monthly surgeries held by Caroline Flint MP and our DMBC ward councillors. As part of the Library’s social responsibility, support is given to charities, for example supporting the Lions with their Easter Egg rae and selling poppies. A regular fund-raising event held in the Library is the annual MacMillan coee morning. During the year second hand books are also sold on behalf of the Charity.

Some headlines from our Library performance measures include: The number of visits to the Library is up by 12.6% from April 2017 to April 2018; 262 new members joined the Library between April 2017 and March 2018; The number of book issues has increased by 10.7% from April 2017 to April 2018; Before hand over to the community the main Library space beneďŹ ted from some repair work, redecoration and new blinds, making it an inviting, welcoming space. An early project was the redecoration of the meeting room. A donation from Tickhill & District Lions helped make this happen. It has been critical to the Library’s ability to promote its use and to increase revenue. Generous donations have been received from Tickhill & District Lions, Taylors of Tickhill, the Parish Room soup lunches, YCA, Wren Kitchens and a host of individual contributors. These monies are being used for the refurbishment of the kitchen which has been taking place during June. Thank you to everyone who has supported Tickhill Community Library through its inaugural period, we very much hope that the support and encouragement will continue into the future allowing the Library to remain a central hub for the community. Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome or should you wish to volunteer or oer your expertise in a particular area, please contact initially a member of the committee. The Trustees of the Tickhill Community Library Registered Charity: John Marsden, Roger Ranson, Lesley Nicholson, Liz Pickering, Ann Tipton, Nigel Cannings and Paula Mickley.
