Welcome to the

January 2019 edition

And so, we welcome another year … 2019 I do hope that readers have had an enjoyable Christmas and that many of you are still enjoying festive treats and time with family and friends. As always, I planned to be organised well ahead for Christmas this year so that I didn’t find myself rushing around, working late, missing things I wanted to attend and wrapping on Christmas Eve! Unfortunately, like all the best laid plans, as I write this with less than a fortnight to go, I have 5 magazines to finish, cards to write, shopping still to do and nothing at all is wrapped. Fingers crossed that by the time you read this I will be enjoying a few days of relaxation. The February issue will be delivered to you late January. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th January. 2019 may be upon us by the time you read this, if not it won’t be far away, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers and their families a very happy New Year, I hope the year ahead will be not only happy but a memorable one for you. Wishing you a Peaceful 2019. Enjoy January and I will be back in a months’ time with your February magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

How do you use your time? Imagine an empty glass jar with a pile of rocks, a pile of pebbles & a pile of grit, all placed on a table by a University lecturer at the front of his curious class. The University lecturer demonstrates that only when he pours the large rocks in first, then medium-sized pebbles and finally small grit into the jar will they all fit inside. Any other order and there’s too many wasted gaps, something (usually the bigger rocks) are left out.

Sound familiar?

The large rocks represent the tasks and people you value the most. The pebbles are activities you have some interest in. Finally, the grit is a whole pile of un-important stuff that for some reason we keep putting in the jar first. Remember, it takes around 3 weeks to form a new habit. So, if you fall short for a week or three no biggie, focus on any improvements you’ve made and use these as a stepping stone to get your schedule bang on within a month or so. Simply by being aware of your time and how you use it puts you ahead of most people, including the person you were before reading this. Time is your most precious asset, it’s worth your attention to invest it wisely. I hope these simple yet useful tips helped you today. Happy New Year Thank you to everyone that made our Mayflower Christmas so special. The amount of so many generous donations were amazing. Thank you to Natalie Waite who held a charity event to raise funds for us. The amount of donations she received was amazing. B T have also been doing their bit fund raising and again thank you so much, you are all stars. Our dogs and cats have had the best Christmas that they could ever have in a kennel situation, their kennel carers helped them open all the presents that people had brought in, after they had all had a play they were well and truly tired out and ready for a sleep. It is a shame that not all dogs & cats that require homes get the same treatment particularly in the winter months. In some shelters in Romania for instance where it is snowy at the moment, the dogs have no blankets and no basic shelter, most die because it is so cold, they will probably only be fed 3 times a week consequently any weak animals do not survive. Awful thought but that is the reality. This is another reason that we are pushing to get Alice the little dog left to die at the side of the road over to the UK, we are worried that even though she is in a shelter that do not destroy dogs, she may not survive the winter months. We have half of the money to enable her to get to the UK, however she is as yet not fit enough to have all of her inoculations, so we feel it will probably be January before we are able to get her over here and to safety. Watch this space for more updates on this little dog. To contribute to her safety any small donation will help, many thanks. The need for funds is never ending, however we need to make sure we are here for the future, and to rescue as many dogs and cats as possible Thank you everyone that contributed to giving all our dogs and cats the best Christmas ever, there are some very generous people out there. SAVE THE DATE EVERYONE our next Red Carpet Spectacular Mayflower Ball event will be on Friday the 24th of May at the Crown Hotel Bawtry. Please call me 07776 783242 if you wish me to put tickets to one side. Ticket price will be £50 each and we will need £10 deposit please. Bye for now

Daisy Female 5 Years Oct 2018 Yes No Yes

My previous mum and dad decided that they could no longer live together, The house was sold My dad was starting a new job where he worked away tomorrow and couldn’t take me, Where was I to go ????? There was nowhere else except for Mayflower to do a shuffle round and help me. It was a tight squeeze and a ‘double-up’ for a couple of kitties but a pen was found for me. I wasn’t very happy about the situation that I was in and I’m afraid that I was a grumpy girl for a while but now I’ve settled in and realised that it’s not too bad. All I want is a new home, perhaps with a nice secure garden, as I’ve been used to going outside, and a family to love me again. Not much to ask for is it? In the meantime I’ll just sit here and wait Please don’t make me wait too long.

Name: Sex: Age: Came into care: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Good with children:

Kiara Female 2 Years Nov 2018 Possibly Some Yes

Kiara was a former stray who was luckily rescued by a kind family when they found her scavanging through the bins looking for a meal. Attempts to find her owner were unsuccessful so the family decided to keep her. Unfortunately the resident cats didn’t take too kindly to this newcomer and wouldn’t let her stay. So here she is looking for a new home. Kiara is an independent little lady who is very fussy but likes it to be on her own terms. She is happy to come to you for fusses but doesn’t like to be picked up or cuddled. As a former stray she has obviously been outside so would probably be happiest with a secure garden to explore. Although she may prove us wrong and prefer indoors !! Don’t pass her by, call her and I’m sure she will come running out to greet you.

Tickhill Estfeld School Art Week and Exhibition at Estfeld As part of our 4oth Anniversary celebrations Estfeld hosted an art exhibition in November to showcase art work throughout the school. Our art work often receives many compliments and we were keen to show our parents, carers and their families and friends, the excellent work that our pupils produce. The exhibition showcased work that our pupils did with illustrator Liz Million, and sculptors Hilary Cartmel and Philip Cox during Art Week in October alongside other work produced in class. The pupils’ work could

be viewed in the classroom and corridor displays and our hall became a portrait gallery – every pupil, all 216, had a portrait displayed. We are hoping everyone had a merry Christmas and we wish you a Happy New Year.

A packed audience at Tickhill Music Society was privileged to hear an outstanding performance at their November concert by the Trio Martinu of Prague. The Trio has been together for 25 years and it showed in the rapport between violin, cello and piano. They started with a piece by their namesake, written in 1951 while he was in exile in New York. No such criticism could be levelled at the Martinu Trio, whose performance came as close as was possible to perfect ensemble playing. If that were not enough, the evening closed with the Trio playing an encore and evoking their homeland with a movement from Dvorak’s Dumky Trio. The audience was left in no doubt that they had witnessed an evening of very special music-making.

IN THE GARDEN

%(77(5 %('6 If you want an easier, tidier way to garden, look no further than a raised bed. Affording a gentler working position, fewer weeds and better soil, this is the perfect answer to many gardener’s woes.

No matter how good your current soil is, a raised bed will give you a miraculous improvement in soil quality, simply because you’ve increased the drainage which is critical to many popular garden plants. In addition, in colder climates, better drainage prevents the soil from staying cold for too long, so this will give you a faster start in the springtime. So not only will your plants thank you, but your body will too. Whether you are young or old, being able to tend to your plants without the back-breaking bending that often comes with it is a joy. You can throw out those pesky knee-cushions and simply rely on standing, or even a small stool if you feel the need to perch when you have a trickier weeding job. Raised beds have proved particularly welcome in our home where our mum is wheelchair bound. And on the plus side we have no more mowing to do in that area of the garden so it’s a win-win! How you assemble the beds of course depends on your materials but as a rule of thumb, make sure you seat even the lowest beds at least 1-2 inches into the soil. This will secure the walls of your bed and prevent them from shifting. The taller you go, the more anchoring you will need. Have a go at including a small raised bed to start with and see how you get on. I’m sure you’ll soon be convinced they are the way to go and you’ll quickly want to convert everything to knee-height.

COMMUNITY

Dear Friends, By the time you are reading this article, most of you will be preparing for the new year. For some people, Christmas is a time of joy whiles for others, it’s a moment of grief. In most of these situations, the new year brings a lot of uncertainWLHV Č‚ IDPLO\ OLIH HFRQRPLF OLIH ZRUN DQG Č´ QDOO\ BREXIT. The coming spring is a very uncertain time for almost everyone who lives on this island called Britain and for those who are connected to it. To remind you, it is a time when the U.K. government is leading its people to come out of the E.U. Whatever way you perceive BREXIT and whatever thoughts you may have, about it, we need to prepare for the future, with or without Europe. Since the beginning of December, I have been UHČľ HFWLQJ RQ WKH IXWXUH DQG ΖȇP UHPLQGHG RI D FRQ versation Moses had with God in Exodus chapter 33 versus 12 to 17. It is as follows: Moses said to God, “Look, you tell me, ‘Lead this people,’ but you don’t let me know whom you’re going to send with me. You tell me, ‘I know you well and you are special to me.’ If I am so special to you, let me in on your plans. That way, I will continue being special to you. Don’t forget, this is your people, your responsibility.â€? God said, “My presence will go with you. I’ll see the journey to the end.â€? Moses said, “If your presence doesn’t take the OHDG KHUH FDOO WKLV WULS RÎ? ULJKW QRZ +RZ HOVH will it be known that you’re with me in this, with me and your people? Are you travelling with us or not? How else will we know that we’re special, I and your people, among all other people on this planet Earth?â€? God said to Moses: “All right. Just as you say; this also I will do, for I know you well and you are special to me. I know you by nameâ€? (The Message) I wonder how many of us would take the trouble to ask God for his leading in the coming year. What made Moses special in the eyes of God was that he desired to know God’s will for his life and for the people that he was leading. He wanted to be in God’s plans. Moses was an ordinary person like any of us but his relationship with God made him special. He communicated through prayer and listened to God’s words.

36

Interestingly, we can also depend on God for his leading in the coming year. He teaches us his will by the words of the scriptures, through people, through events and situations. All we need to do is to be sensitive to him and his spirit. One of the things we can do is to pray to him frequently. The year 2019 may be a year of uncertainties but you can overcome these uncertainties with trust. First ‘trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding’. Trust that God will lead you into the year as an overcomer. Secondly, trust in yourself. You can move beyond and above all the negativity that surrounds you by trusting in your abilities, skills and talents. Thirdly, encourage others to trust God after you have overcome. Happy New Year greetings and blessings to you. Yours sincerely,

Rev Dr. Frank Okai-Sam (Methodist Minister - Adwick, Bawtry, Harworth, Sprotbrough & Tickhill) Tel.: 01302857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust Fracking in North Nottinghamshire The North Notts Local Group starts the New Year with a talk about fracking by Janice Bradley MBE, Head of Conservation, Policy and Planning at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. Janice is well placed to tell us about this controversial activity. She has been working in conservation and habitat restoration for many years and has spearheaded numerous campaigns to protect the environment for wildlife. In fact, her MBE was awarded for her services to Nottinghamshire’s wildlife. Janice’s well balanced and informative talk will explain the permitting processes, the system that grants permits for fracking, and what happens during fracking operations. She will outline the impacts these operations might have on our wildlife and update us on the current situation in our area, North Nottinghamshire. She will also give us an update on some of the Trust’s latest, exciting wildlife projects that are happening in our area. Do come if you possibly can. This meeting will be held in the Rural Learning Centre at the Idle Valley, North Road (A638), Retford DN22 8RQ on January 10 2019. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Admission £2.50 includes refreshments. The frozen over ‘Fish Pond’ which was at the far end of the field behind Castle Folds Farm, Adjacent to Tickhill Castle.

Our November meeting was one of the best we have ever had. Matthew Morris from Leicester University brought ‘The King under the Car Park’ to life with his fabulous power point presentation. This kept members spellbound as photo after photo emerged of the find, the research involved, and the piecing together of the bones. Richard had obviously been buried in a great hurry, with no coffin, and his remains squashed into too small a grave in the Church of the Grey Friars. Matthew showed us the skeleton of Richard from the moment it was uncovered, and it really was found, minus its feet, within minutes of beginning the excavation. The skeleton’s bones and DNA proved it to be a man of about thirty years, with a twisted spine, a good diet and battle wounds which matched the

50

descriptions recorded at the time. The genealogists then traced his modern day ancestor through an unbroken female line, to New Zealand, and a further ancestor who was a carpenter from London. The Carpenter was given the task of making the coffin which was used to rebury the remains and Richard is now in Leicester Cathedral. We all felt this was a nice touch. Our first meeting of the year is on Thursday 17th January, when Sue Allen, the historian and expert on the Pilgrim Fathers, talks about ‘The Pilgrim connection to Tickhill.’ We meet as usual in the Methodist School Room, doors open at 7.00pm. and visitors are always welcome.

If you see planning consents not being adhered to, please report these matters to D.M.B.C. Residents are urged to come to meetings and make comments as Councillors need to know how neighbours and residents feel towards planning applications. Sometimes the applications are for the better and a voice of support will determine the recommendation, but the Councillors need to know also if you object. Residents can make their own

representations by e mail or letter to D.M.B.C . Please try to quote the planning application number. On line representations can be made by visiting D.M.B.C. planning website. We rounded off 2018 with a series of events both jointly with the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows as well as just by ourselves. The Beavers colony attended Winter Wonderland at Hesley Scout Activity Centre on a very wet and windy Saturday afternoon. Despite the weather all those who attended had a fantastic time taking part in many activities designed to challenge and entertain even the most demanding 6 – 8-year-old. Not to forget the adults too.

and Scott Adgar – scout leader - his 10-year service award. I have already had the pleasure of giving Rachel Bramall – beaver leader – her 5-year service award in front of the Beaver Colony. As we enter 2019 we look forward to growing the Scout group by recruiting both adults and youngsters to join in with the aim of delivering “Skills for Life” for all our members.

Our annual Scout & Guide Carol Service was held on December 10th in St Mary’s Church. This was a rather special event as we were able to make an overdue presentation to Clare Carr – the Brownie leader. Clare has, single handed, organised this service for over 15 years. Each service is unique and enables members of both the Scout and Guide movements in Tickhill to partake in every aspect of the event. The Scout Group decided to honour Clare with a silver Thanks Badge as a token of their appreciation of her hard work. It was also pleasing to see Jo Morrison – one of the Phoenix Explorer Unit leadership team – receive both her Queen’s Scout Award and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award from our District Commissioner – Graham Harrop- at the same service. A couple of days later, at our leaders Christmas meal, I was able to give Peter Ogilvie - the scout group chairman – his 25-year service award

Our Community Library I write on behalf of the Committee to thank all users, all volunteers and those who have supported the Library in many ways over the last 12 months. We have been fortunate to be able to redecorate and refurbish areas, and we are lucky to have such a useful facility here in our town. Please do pop in and use it. Much of what happens would not be possible without the oversight of Lesley Nicholson who voluntarily gives of her time – for this, and all support given we are most grateful. John Marsden (Chair)
