I am looking forward to relaxing for a few days between Christmas and New Year, and I know that I am very lucky to be able to do this. There will be a great many people working hard throughout Christmas keeping our hospitals open, caring for our elderly, serving in our armed forces, keeping public transport running and providing numerous other essential services. The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 7th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue, as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family and friends a very happy Christmas. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2019!

Best wishes,

It’s not a race, you can go at your own pace, but for the competitive amongst you there will be the opportunity to set off ahead of the pack! There will be medals for all finishers this year, as well as the popular sweeties on the finish line.

It’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit and a fun event for all the family to enjoy and raise money to improve recreational facilities in Tickhill.

There will be a festive warm up ahead of the 12noon start, a tombola with seasonal prizes, a food stand or two to be in attendance and of course the Cricket Club Bar will be open afterwards, so don’t forget to pop a bit of cash into a zipped-up pocket if you think you might be tempted when you have finished the run!

This family event is open to all ages and abilities and even dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on short leads. Entrants can choose on the day whether they wish to complete 1 or 2 laps of the 2.5K course which starts and finishes at Tickhill Cricket Club.

community Community Hello everyone, and welcome to the last write up of the year. We are all starting to think about Christmas and the joy it brings to so many people. However please give some thought to how much volunteer work people give to the Charities they support, whether it’s an animal Charity or many of the other Charities that need help. There are lots of kind people out there giving up all of their Christmas free time to help their nominated Charity. So, let’s do a big thank you to everyone. All of the dogs and cats in our care will receive the attention they deserve over Christmas and with the usual shoe box collections that we are so lucky to be part of our animals will have a super Christmas day. Our kennel assistants will be on hand over the Christmas period to make sure the dogs and cats have plenty of play time with their toys. Keep an eye on Facebook I am sure there will be lots of photos posted. Thank you to all of the girls and guys that work at Mayflower they do such a good job, you are all stars. We have street collections in Doncaster on the 1st and 22nd of December, we will be outside M & S, please come along and say hello. Don’t forget our Santa Paws at Bawtry light switch on this is a new event and will be so exciting. Just a few things to consider if you would like to either donate or contribute to our Sanctuary over the Christmas period. We are desperate for cash donations as we are struggling financially at the moment. We need to be here in the future for the families that are unable to take care of their dogs and cats, whether it’s people that fall on hard times, illness, elderly that have to leave their homes and are unable to take their beloved pets with them, there are many different reasons that people have to give their pets up for adoption. We also have a shopping list of things that you can pick up off the supermarket shelves, wash powder, washing up liquid, poo bags, hand wash and large black refuse bags. We will be grateful for any one of these items. We always need an abundance of towels and blankets in the winter months. Please don’t forget we have a super pet shop in our reception area at the Sanctuary, so if you’re looking for toys, beds, blankets etc. come along and have a browse. Last but not least we are trying to save a little dog that we have called Alice that was left at the side of a road to die. Please read the write up below. Many thanks to everyone that has supported us this year and continue to do so. Thanks to all the kennel and office staff you do a great job.

Help us Save Alice... She lay at the side of a busy road, she had given up and was waiting to die. She was eventually noticed by a kind person (not the Dog Catcher, thank goodness) who managed to catch her but she was still taken to a kill shelter. When we agreed to take Alice, she was Number 93, without a name and without hope, awaiting her fate like so many others. She was transferred to a safe pension, which came at a cost, and treatment was started for her skin and wellbeing. Alice is a mature dog, with only one eye - goodness knows how she lost it -but that doesn’t matter to us. We just want to give her a future that is safe and secure.

To save Alice, we need to raise funds to cover the following costs: £35 per day to keep her safe in the pension £100 to cover the cost of her treatment so far £20 for a 4DX test for heartworm etc £180 for her vaccinations (including Rabies), worming, micro-chipping and arranging her pet passport £200 for her transport to the UK and safety. Can you help us give Alice the life she deserves? Even a small donation will make such a difference If we all help, we will save a life............. Thanks a million

Happy Christmas and New Year. Best Wishes,

Margaret Godley Mayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry Tel 01302 711330

TOP TIPS FOR MINIMISING RUNNING INJURIES 1. Make sure you’ve got the right shoes for the job. 2. Get injuries treated. Even if your symptoms are resolving in line with the natural recovery process, there may still be movement dysfunction that needs to be addressed in order to prevent future problems. 3. Do other sports and exercise too – everything in moderation. 4. Regular sports massage can help keep muscles in tip top condition. 5. Mix up the surfaces you run on – this alters the stresses and strains your body experiences preventing overloading of one particular structure. 6. Yoga and Pilates can help create a good foundation of strength and ȵ H[LELOLW\ IURP ZKLFK WR WUDLQ 7. Don’t increase your mileage by more than 5% from one week to the next – this avoids a ‘too much too soon’ situation. 8. Allow your body some recovery time by avoiding running every single day – 4-5 times a week is enough. 9. Tickhill Estfeld School Food Bank Donation

Estfeld Remembers

Before the half term holiday we held a non-uniform day to support the excellent work of the Doncaster food banks. Our pupils, parents and staff were very generous and as a school we donated 238.1 kg of food, enough to provide 566 meals for people in crisis in the Doncaster area.

Each year we commemorate Remembrance in school with a special assembly. As it is the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day this year we wanted to mark the occasion with something special. We decided that we would like to make a display outside school so that all of our school community could be aware of our work. It is shown in the photograph below and it has received many compliments. Thank you to all of the staff and pupils for their hard work and thank you to everybody who took the time to let our pupils know how much they admired our work.

The food bank was very grateful for our donation and VHQW XV D OHWWHU RI WKDQNV DQG D FHUWLÂż FDWH ZKLFK LV proudly displayed in school. Thank you to all for their donations and to the Friends of Estfeld who collected all of the food and delivered it to the food bank. :H ZDQWHG WR Âż QG RXW VRPH IDFWV DERXW IRRG EDQNV VR we did some research and this is what we found out.

DID YOU KNOW: • Foodbanks are charitable organisations – that means that they do not make any money out of any of the donated items that they receive. Everything is given to people who need them. • Until 10 years ago there were very few food banks in (XURSH EXW IROORZLQJ WKH ¿ QDQFLDO FULVLV LQ ORWV of people lost their jobs and food prices increased meaning that many people could no longer afford to buy all of the food that they needed. • In the UK it is estimated that £13 million people live below the poverty line – they do not have enough money to provide everything that they need – a warm home, clothing and food. That is about 20% of our population – 1 in every 5 people.

In the weeks leading up to our Remembrance our pupils learn about those who have served and who FRQWLQXH WR VHUYH RXU FRXQWU\ DQG RI WKH VDFUL¿ FHV WKDW they have made to ensure that we live in safety and peace. Our pupils really have created some stunning work and have great insight for children so young. It is wonderful to see the respect, understanding and empathy that our pupils display, when talking about their work and listening to the thoughts of others in class and in assembly. We are proud to be teaching our pupils values for life. Likewise, we were very proud of those pupils who represented both schools in Tickhill by laying a wreath at the War Memorial following the Remembrance Service at St. Mary’s Church on the Sunday morning. Lest we forget.

• Fortunately, there are now 380 food banks in the UK. Volunteers, schools, churches and supermarkets all donate food which is sorted, checked and packed into boxes so that it can be given to people who need it.

Dear )ULHQGV If we were to believe the many and varied advertisements found on television at this time of year, we would think that the celebration of Christmas was all and only about indulgence and acquisition. I have lost count of the number of times the phrase ‘treat yourself’ is used. And although this is now an integral part of the celebration of Christmas, it is not the whole story In fact, we need to return to the story, the story of a baby born in a Bethlehem stable, the place where Christmas began, to truly understand the season and to ‘live it’ to its fullest potential. For church going folk, throughout December, during the Christian season of Advent, we put a GLÎ? HUHQW VSLQ RQ WKH EXLOG XS WR WKH JUHDW IHDVW RI Christmas.

$17Ζ&Ζ3$7Ζ21 /LNH WKH H[FLWHG FKLOG DVNLQJ KRZ PDQ\ PRUH sleeps until Christmas, we too approach Christmas with a spirit of excitement and anticipation. This is the time when we see how much God loved us ordinary folk by becoming one of us, a vulnerable child not a king, born in a stable, not a palace. We celebrate that God is with us and will never leave us and we wait expectantly to hear this good news again.

35(3$5$7Ζ21 Alongside the frenzy of present buying, list making and card sending, the cleaning, shopping and

visiting, we also take time to prepare spiritually for Christmas. This sometimes includes some seasonal reading, spending time in silence, and exploring a new way of praying. And in church we enjoy Christingles, Nativities, carol singing and the odd mince pie and seasonal mull. We hope you will be able to join us for at least some of these.

+23( But if there was only one way for us to approach this festive season, I would wish it to be with a VHQVH RI KRSHIXOQHVV /HW XV EH VHQVLWLYH WR WKH fact that for some in our communities Christmas is a time of loneliness or despair and perhaps rather than focussing on our own neediness consider for a moment the needs of others, perhaps by making a charitable donation to a homelessness charity or volunteering with an organisation that supports the housebound elderly. For hope is something we can give to others and in return we may become tentatively more hopeful for ourselves, for tomorrow, for humankind, and for the world in which we live. May you know times of true anticipation, preparation and hope this coming season. And may you all know God’s love, joy and peace throughout Advent, Christmas and the coming New Year. Many blessings

7LFNKLOO 0XVLF Society Reveiw A good audience braved the worst Storm Callum could deliver for a thrilling concert of piano duets by Jinah Shim and Raymond Yiu at St Mary’s School, Tickhill. Many of us had heard Jinah play two years ago so we knew we were in for a rare treat. She had promised to return with another pair of hands and, even though Raymond was a welcome late replacement, it was certainly a double treat. Jinah introduced the evening as simply “Music we like!â€? There could have been no better theme as they started with a lively Mozart sonata, the perfect antidote to Callum raging outside. Truly empathetic playing followed in Faure’s Dolly Suite, written to celebrate the life of the daughter of his mistress, according to our programme- or his very good friend, according to Jinah’s introduction! /HWȇV VHWWOH IRU WKH ODWWHU VLQFH %HUFHXVH EURXJKW WR PDQ\ RI RXU PLQGV /LVWHQ :LWK 0RWKHU DQG HYHQ EURXJKW RQ D IHZ WHDUV /H -DUGLQ GH 'ROO\ HYRNHG D lovely stroll in a gorgeous garden - despite Callum EXW KRZ VXLWDEOH ZDV WKH HQHUJHWLF /H SDV HVSDQRO on October 12th, the national day of Spain! The October meeting gave us a talk by Jane Price from Wadworth, who showed us that even funerals can have their funny sides. Jane was previously a midwife, and now conducts both religious and non-religious funerals for her parishioners, seeing life from start to finish! This was a very funny talk, but had its serious moments, when Jane reminded us that it would happen to us all sooner or later, and stating what you personally wanted when the day finally arrived, was essential. The December meeting takes place on Thursday, 13th December at the Tavern and is an all ticket event. This will be the highlight of our year when our speaker will be David Bostwick, well known for 58 TICKHILL TODAY

his TV appearances and his vast knowledge of the Tudor and Stuart periods. David’s talk, ‘Deck The Halls’ will show us how the Tudors celebrated Christmas and will follow on from our Christmas meal, when pies, peas and puds are on the menu. This should be just the right note to start the Christmas season, tickets are £10 per person, and can be purchased in the library. Doors open 6.30pm and the meal will be served at 7.00pm, Followed by David’s talk.

Not too sure if Jumble Sales are becoming outdated! We held our last jumble sale in October. We had a lot of jumble, we advertised it widely but we only had a small number of buyers. Nevertheless, we managed to raise a welcome £300 which will be used to purchase further equipment to enable us to provide more challenging activities in the future.

As this is the last edition before Christmas, on behalf of all our members and leaders I would like to thank everyone who has supported us in whatever way they could over the last 12 months and wish you all a peaceful Christmas and hope for a fulfilling new year.

October was an odd month anyway. With school half terms occurring towards the end of the month, meetings were run on reduced numbers as, for some reason, the schools which teach our youngsters don’t seem able to synchronise their holidays. Must be difficult for parents if they have youngsters at more than one school outside Tickhill. During October it was National Start a Heart Day. We joined in with this and 21 Cubs learnt the basics of CPR and using a defibrillator. 21 youngsters each with a mannikin is quite a challenge but we managed. Enthusiasm often outweighed application but, whilst some of the Cubs are not quite strong enough to perform CPR, at least they know how to do it and can guide others who may be stronger. They discovered that using the defibrillator requires no physical strength but you must be prepared to do as you are told. The whole group attended the annual Remembrance Day Service at St Mary’s Church. An evening spent making poppies was soon rewarded with a splendid memorial to those who are remembered there. We will be supporting the Late Night Opening event on November 29th. There are at least 13 craft and charity stalls and Father Christmas will be in residence as usual ready to listen to children’s desires for Christmas and giving gifts to all those who visit. Doors open at 5:00pm and entry is free. The grotto will close at 8:00 or after the last youngster has visited. No one will be turned away.
