Back to school time already! Good luck to all those starting school or nursery for the first time, moving to a new school, heading off to College, University, Apprenticeship or first job. The summer holidays do seem to have gone quickly, but then they always do. This year I have been lucky enough to visit Orlando, Florida for the first time. 13 of us made our way around all of the Disney Parks, Universal Studios and various other Florida attractions. I now need another holiday to recover! Lots of great memories have been made however. The October issue will be delivered to you late September. Miners Pension Compensation We are successfully claiming compensation for former miners who transferred out of the Mineworkers Pension Scheme. Many miners were advised to transfer their British Coal Pension to a private pension scheme which paid considerably less! This was bad advice and many retired miners or their widows have lost out.

Example 1 - £110,000

Example 2 - £48,000

Mr D, a former miner from Barnsley, was made redundant in the late 1980s. After the pits closed he was encouraged by an agent of the Prudential to transfer his Mineworkers Pension Scheme to them. We were able to show that this was bad advice. The Prudential eventually accepted this and agreed settlement of £110,000.

Mr F, a former miner from Doncaster, was made redundant in the 1980’s. He was advised by an agent of Sun Life to transfer his Mineworkers Pension Scheme to them. He was promised he would get a much better return which wasn’t the case. We submitted a formal complaint; Sun Life agreed to award Mr F a lump sum of £48,333.34.

I’d like to just put the car in reverse this month and go back to the summer, just this once. What made this summer unique? Longest dry spell in ‌ however many years? Yep. Loads of proper warm days? Undoubtedly. A great summer programme (Expect IRU DOO WKH YLOODJH \RXQJ SHRSOH" $EVROXWHO\ $OO JUHDW VWXÎ? EXW ZKDW Ζ ZDV WKLQNLQJ DERXW ZDV something a bit unusual. We run an after school family event called “All Inâ€?. It is meant to be an opportunity for people who want to take what we do at Messy Church a bit further. This past summer we had our 2nd All In family holiday club. Let me tell you about it. It was amazing! I know holiday clubs are MAINLY aimed towards FKLOGUHQ \RXQJ SHRSOH 7KDWȇV Č´ QH Ζ KDYH so enjoyed seeing Messy Church and now All In as a family activity. We wanted to run this event as a family event as well. It was WKH VHFRQG ZHHN 0RQGD\ 7KXUVGD\ RI WKH ZHHNV KROLGD\V :KDW PDNHV WKLV D ELW GLÎ? HUHQW was that we have had the help of a team from American to come and help put this club on. Now I will be honest with you ‌ when this idea was Č´ UVW WKURZQ P\ GLUHFWLRQ P\ PLQG LPPHGLDWHO\ ZHQW EDFN \HDUV RU VR :H FDPH IRU WKH SXUSRVH of starting the church. Simple as. I didn’t know how people would accept us, or not. I thought because I was from West Virginia (yes, Almost +HDYHQ DQG DOO WKDW Č? FRDO PLQLQJ FRXQWU\ Č? in the USA, at least we would have something in common and maybe build some bridges.

People assumed I had met Madonna and Michael Jackson, just like people in the States think each Brit has met the queen and that it’s always foggy here. I think most didn’t know what WR PDNH RI XV ΖȇG SUREDEO\ EH WKH VDPH %XW there was a group that didn’t like us being in the village and had no problems telling me about it. I was worried that this last scenario would be the situation. I didn’t want our friends to EH SXW RÎ? QRU GLG Ζ ZDQW D ZDYH RI QHJDWLYLW\ about me or the church to spread from the new estate to the area where Lidl’s is being built. But I could not have been more wrong. On the Monday of Holiday Club, we had booked a slot at 6KHUZRRG 3LQHV QH[W WR *R $SH DQG KDG D GD\ IXOO RI VKHOWHU EXLOGLQJ REVWDFOH FRXUVHV Č´ UVW EXLOGLQJ and archery. It was fantastic to watch families to do things together. Each person welcomed the team from America with open arms. From Tuesday through Thursday there were people working together, helping two village families with garden projects and all the things that went into putting on the holiday club. As I PHQWLRQHG ODVW PRQWK UHJDUGLQJ WKH :RUOG &XS though I’m not British I was ever so proud of living LQ (QJODQG /Ζ.(:Ζ6( Ζ ZDV VR FKXÎ? HG WR VHH Rossington families working together and welcoming people from the other side of the Atlantic. There were no words of Presidents or Prime Ministers ‌ Brexit or wall building between the USA and Mexico. There was some fun jesting about what black pudding is and what it goes with (nothing in P\ YLHZ EXW WKDWȇV DQRWKHU VWRU\ KRZ WR SURQRXQFH words and sports. Then on Thursday evening and HYHU\WKLQJ Č´ QLVKHG XS WKH WHDUV Čľ RZHG 7KHUH was true connection between countries. It was so good. I believe we are on the threshold of of great things as a village and this is another evidence! 1RZ JHW WKHP RÎ? WR VFKRRO DQG LI \RX KDYH D ELW of time, the door is open and the kettle on.

Hi Everyone, We hope you are all enjoying your summer break. I know how difficult it has been to try and keep your pets cool in the heat, it’s also been really hard walking your dogs, as the ideal time is closer to 9pm when the weather has cooled slightly, that’s if we are able to stay awake until then! Here are some special people to thank. Charlotte and Rob MacConnachie have taken part in a 3 Peak Challenge. Charlotte and her colleagues from Cannon Fire APG Group carried out a sponsored walk on the 11th August. They have raised sponsorship for 3 worthwhile Charities including Mayflower Sanctuary. So a very big thank you and we hope your legs were not too sore at the end of the Challenge. One of our regular supporters will be at the Austerfield Village Show on the 2nd Sept so I hope it is a good day and everyone has fun and supports all the Charities there. Tilly came into care with her buddies Rupert and Tabby because their owner was being evicted and was unable to take them with him to the new house. $ KRVW RI JROGHQ 'DÎ? RGLOV Garden centres, nurseries and catalogues are full of daffodil bulbs now. I have to exercise supreme self-restraint every time I wander in! I think I get asked more questions about daffodils than any other plant, apart from roses. I think it’s because they are ubiquitous in the spring and so we assume they are easy to grow. They are...and they aren’t, so I’ll answer the most common questions I get asked here. I think the question I get most is ’How do I get P\ GDIIRGLOV WR Ă€ RZHU PRUH WKDQ RQH \HDU"Âś It’s a good question. It’s tempting to think that the only thing you have to remember about planting daffodil bulbs is to set them pointy side up, but it’s a bit more complicated than that if \RX ZDQW WKHP WR Ă€ RZHU HYHU\ \HDU The trick is to set them deep enough. If you plant them just below the surface, as so many of people do, they dry out, which means they lack the food and moisture to get them through until the following year. The result is an uninteresting clump of leaves rather than a host of golden daffodils.

The third question I’m often asked is, ‘How far DSDUW VKRXOG , SODQW WKH EXEV" They should be planted about 3 inches / 8cm apart in holes about 10 inches / 25cm deep. Waiting there to greet them were seven eager Ramblers ready as guides on their walk. The feedback from this year’s Summer Festival was overwhelmingly positive making it our best event to date. We’ve taken on board all your comments to make sure next year is even better. I’d like to thank the Parish Cllrs who gave of their time and the Clerks who made it possible with their hard work and dedication. As you can imagine it takes a lot of hard work to make these events happen. I’d also like to thank everyone else who came along over the weekend, but my biggest thanks go to all the residents of Rossington who came and joined us. Lynn said, seeing all the families sat around having picnics and enjoying themselves took me back to the days of the Sports and Galas days back in the 70s. Happy memories! Let’s hope we are making memories for our children and young people at the summer festivals and all our events.

Lidl Billboard Artwork Opportunity

They are asking for local people of any age to have a go at producing the artwork that will go on their 6.3 x 3.3 meter billboard on the front of the new store on West End Lane. Village Signs

The Parish Council had a competition to design the new Village Signs for Rossington. The winning design came from Adrian Howes from the Smile group at the Memorial Hall. As soon as permissions have been granted, the village signs will be going up on West End Lane, Sheepbridge Lane, Stripe Road and Littleworth Lane. Two of the signs have been sponsored by Lidl and the iPort/Verdion.

Firework Display

The Firework Display will take place at 7 pm on Monday 5 November 2018 on the Miners Welfare grounds. In the last couple of years, the entrance has been free but as you can imagine putting on the best Firework Display in Doncaster is not cheap. So, this year we will be asking for donations at the entrance. All the money raised will go into paying for the display, freeing up parish funds for the village.

We recorded four attempt residential burglaries in Rossington.
