IS CRAMP CRAMPING YOUR STYLE?!? Several patients have asked me about cramp recently. Here’s the low down… What is cramp? Cramp is a sudden and involuntary muscle contraction and occurs most often in the calf muscle. The strong contraction typically pulls the foot into a pointed position, creates a visible hardening of the muscle and can be surprisingly painful. Other PXVFOHV FDQ EH D΍ HFWHG DQG FUDPSLQJ RI the muscles in the feet and hamstrings is QRW XQFRPPRQ 7KH D΍ HFWHG PXVFOH PD\ feel sore for several days (in the same way that a muscle can feel sore after exercise). What should you do during an attack? Cramp will tend to resolve by itself but the level of discomfort felt during an episode normally brings with it a degree of impatience so you may want to try to hasten the recovery! Tactics aimed at encouraging the muscle to relax include gently massaging the muscle and gently stretching the muscle out of it’s cramped position (for cramp in the calf this would PHDQ WU\LQJ WR ȵ H[ WKH IRRW EDFN WRZDUGV \RX RU VWDQGLQJ RQ WKH D΍ HFWHG OHJ What causes cramp? Sometimes cramp can occur for no obvious reason but there are factors that we think increase the likelihood of you experiencing cramp… Dehydration • Strenuous exercise Ageing • Pregnancy An imbalance of electrolytes in your body (perhaps from excessive sweating) Some medication (for example beta blockers, statins, diuretics) When to seek further help If the cramps you are experiencing don’t ȴ W ZLWK WKH IHDWXUHV GHVFULEHG DERYH WKHQ you should see your GP as cramp, although usually nothing more than a nuisance, can be caused by other medical conditions.

Totally Tropical! The ‘greenhouse effect’ is an environmental hot topic. And it’s true that despite the grim winter of 2017-18 we’ve generally been experiencing milder conditions in recent years. I’ve certainly started to experiment with more exotic plants. It’s D OLWWOH ULVN\ RQH KDUG ZLQWHU FDQ ZLSH RXW D WHQGHU VSHFLPHQ %XW EHWZHHQ QRZ and September there’s every chance that many tropical plants will survive if SODQWHG RXW LQ RXU JDUGHQV 7KH\ QHHG D VXQQ\ VKHOWHUHG VSRW OLNH WKH RQH \RX would choose for petunias, tobacco plants and rose beds. Try Cannas. They have luxuriant broad spearshaped leaves, which can be deep green, purple or even striped with orange or yellow. 7KH\ SURGXFH YLEUDQW Ă€ RZHUV ZKLFK ORRN OLNH gladioli but better! 2U KRZ DERXW SODQWLQJ VFDUOHW GDKOLDV OLNH ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, which also sports attractive bronze foliage. A big clump of African marigolds provides a EOD]H RI Âż HU\ FRORXU 2U WU\ WHQGHU SHUHQQLDO salvias in colours which range from magenta through to scarlet and deep purples and EOXHV 7KH\ ZRQÂśW VXUYLYH WKH Âż UVW ZLQWHU IURVWV but they an easy to propagate from shootcuttings which can be over-wintered in a cool greenhouse ready for the following spring. Verbena bonariensis produces tall wands RI GDLQW\ OLODF Ă€ RZHUV 7KH\ VHOI VHHG IUHHO\ which is great if you consider that a bonus in a plant (I do) but maybe avoid this one if selfseeding bothers you.

You could even try a banana plant. The variety “Musa Banjoâ€? is wonderfully architectural, and though it does not produce fruit it will create LPSDFW 3ODQW LQ D ODUJH SRW DQG OHW LWV IDQ OLNH leaves create fabulous shadows on the patio. It hails from Japan originally and loves sunshine, but it is hardy to -6C so perfect for the suburban UK climate. Experiment and have fun creating your very own suburban rainforest.

Bankwood Lane The planning application for the new road into the Bankwood Industrial estate should now be well advanced and hopefully it may be presented to the Doncaster Council Planning Committee in June. This is yet to be confirmed. Attero attended the Parish Council meeting in April together with Officers from the Environment Agency, the latter reaffirming their commitment to ongoing monitoring of both waste recycling sites. Residents are respectfully reminded that if the application is passed, it will still take many weeks for the construction phase to be completed. However, with the timescales and delays that the Bankwood residents have experienced, these timings in comparison are a drop in the ocean.

DHL Lorries through the village It appears that the management of the DHL Stripe Road facility have little or no control over their own lorries. If the management have indeed issued the new routing agreement to the drivers of their own DHL vehicles, many of them are simply ignoring it. Having attended 3 meetings at their depot which were clearly a waste of time, the way forward is quite clear. Mick is to pursue the installation of a camera at the end of Common Lane. We believe that with the vehicle movement monitoring equipment that DHL have at their disposal it is a simple matter of identifying those lorries that are ignoring the agreement. Mick is also to pursue a legal enquiry on the feasibility of gaining access to these records. In addition to this he is to seek to identify the respective Chief Executive of the section of DHL that this depot is responsible to with a view to seeking a meeting. We have no faith in the Managers at the Stripe Road DHL facility. Just so they are aware, Mick has followed several of their DHL lorries through the village in the last few days thereby once again confirming that DHL have scant interest in our quality of life and road safety.

Environmental damage, Bankwood Lane. Not content with ruining the resident’s quality of life on the Bankwood Estate, lorries from a certain business on the industrial estate, despatched an abnormal load which was so huge it had an escort vehicle and had to mount the kerb, scrubbed up the council grass verge and smashed a branch off a council tree. We might all

think that this was their final throw of the dice re the detrimental effect of the lorries but hey ho no it was not. Another abnormal load was despatched just a few days later and again the tree was smashed. We requested that the driver be identified and that he/she be interviewed under official caution. This was duly achieved and the Lorry Driver admitted the offence and hopefully the company concerned will have to pay the costs. The business who contracted this haulier seems to be lacking some element of respect for this village. We are grateful to DMBC officers for following up on our request and bringing this matter to a successful conclusion. Bankwood residents were instrumental in making this happen with their continued vigilance.

Councillors Surgery and future Rossington Today topics Residents are reminded that the Radburn Tara meetings still take place on the second Wednesday of every month at 3pm at the Ragusa Hall Community Centre. Everyone is welcome so please do take this opportunity to go along and raise your concerns with your DMBC Councillors and St Leger Officers.
