Welcome to the

July 2019 edition

Today

“What is lovely never dies, but passes into another loveliness, star-dust or sea-foam, flower or winged air.” Thomas Bailey Aldrich July already and the summer months might finally be upon us. Another school year is coming to an end and another set up young people are heading towards leaving behind a nursery, school or college. Hopefully although sad about leaving they will be looking forward to the challenges ahead as they enter the next phase of their education or move into the workplace. Just like in June you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends through July. You will find details of many such events throughout this magazine. Following the success of our previous giveaways, this month we have a pair of tickets for James performing after racing at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. Look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th July. Don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.

Best wishes,

Our grateful thanks also to Lions International, particularly Thorne Rural Lions, for all their hard work. A reminder that we have a stall at Bentley Gala on Sunday, 14th July where we will be selling jewellery and other goodies. The Gala will be in Bentley Park from 1-5pm with lots to do and see for all the family. Come along and join in the fun. Also Optima International on Askern Road at Toll Bar will be holding their annual Open Day on Friday, 26th July from 12-5pm. Entry is £5 on the day, but £4 if bought from the company beforehand. All rides are free and unlimited. A bar and refreshments are available. This is another popular event and money raised goes to charities (including DCDT). A reminder that we will also have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August. Details will be in next publication. Let’s hope the sun shines for all these events as there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes in organising them. Please let us know if you have any unwanted scarves or jewellery or any tombola/raffle prizes. If you are planning a fundraising event on our behalf we can supply you with T-shirts, sponsor forms, etc. We are at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Fantastic NEW PARTNERSHIP IN ROSSINGTON T

Tornedale Infant School and Mini Me’Zzz are delighted to announce that they are continuing and expanding their partnership arrangement.

Mini Me’Zzz currently offer an outstanding breakfast and afterschool club for all Rossington children which is based at Tornedale Infant School, as well as supporting working parents by offering fun-filled clubs during the school holidays. We would now like to share our exciting news … Mini Me’Zzz, after receiving change of use permission from the Council, are going to revamp the former Caretaker’s bungalow on the school site into a day care facility to offer greater provision to all children over one-year old. Staff at Tornedale are very excited to be working with such enthusiastic and caring individuals as Kerry and Fay and can see how successful their latest venture will be. We see firsthand the children attending the Clubs and how much fun they are having and the excellent care they are given by Mini Me’Zzz and are delighted to be in a position to expand on this collaborative working. We feel that having children on site from such a young age will facilitate a smoother transition into Tornedale and offer working parents peace of mind by offering a wrap-round care facility on one site. Watch this space for details of the Open Day when you will have the opportunity to look around the facility, chat with staff from Mini Me’Zzz and Tornedale about what we can offer you and your family.

DONCASTER HF RAMBLING CLUB T

Doncaster HF Rambling Club is an independent, non-profit-making walking club founded in 1948 which strives to provide opportunities for the healthy enjoyment of the countryside, in a spirit of friendship and fun. With many members from Doncaster and beyond, we organise walks to take place every two weeks on alternate Sundays, visiting a wide range of locations in the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and coast, the Yorkshire Wolds, Lincolnshire Wolds, the South Pennines, and Staffordshire. Our web-site www. doncasterhframblingclub.org.uk gives a pictorial record of our walks which can be accessed from the drop-down menu under ‘Recent Walks’ and ‘Where We Go’. At each location we offer a choice of three guided walks of varying degrees of distance and difficulty, an example of which can be found in the menu under ‘Next Walk’. We also organise residential visits to more distant areas such as the Lake District, South Derbyshire and Northumberland. We provide transport to all our walk locations by private coach, with members boarding and being dropped off at a number of points in and around Doncaster, listed in the drop-down menu under ‘Booking Walks’. We welcome prospective new members by encouraging them to participate in a couple of walks before asking them to pay our annual membership subscription. However we do ask that they pay the coach fare which is currently set at £10 for the entire journey. To make further enquiries please first contact our Membership Secretary, Maureen Dransfield, on 01-977-704747, e-mail: mdransfield49@gmail. com and then to book a place on a walk telephone our Rambling Secretary, Gavin Barnes on 01-302539316.

Kip Combes (1924-2013) was a prominent figure on the local art scene and a president of the Worksop Society of Artists, while his son Richard is a highly respected New York-based artist who has exhibited internationally and has work in major private collections worldwide. During the early stages of World War II, Kip Combes was evacuated to Retford with his family and, apart from a period of living in Manchester, he remained in the town for the rest of his life. Richard was brought up in Retford and worked as an architect in the UK before moving to New York City. There he earned Master’s degree in painting at the New York Academy of Art and his remarkable skills and mastery of techniques have earned him multiple awards and a full membership of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Although many of Richard’s works are realistic representations of people and objects, they are not just skilful depictions of subjects. His art transports viewers into the middle of an intriguing,

unfinished story and makes them wonder about how it continues. This exceptional artistry transforms everyday spaces and objects into extraordinary images that are both absorbing and haunting. www.bassetlaw.museum.gov.uk Yorkshire Sculpture Park DAMIAN HURST has arrived and his enormous eye-sores cannot be missed as you make your way hot foot from the main carpark to the new and wonderful Weston Gallery. The Weston is a small addition to YSP, and mainly an eatery, but the gallery itself is a lovely airy light space with a really interesting and beautiful exhibition by Punjabi artists THUKRAL & TAGRA whose work discusses the problems faced by subsistence farmers in the Punjab. It may not sound artistically interesting stuff, but the show is beautiful and intriguing and enjoyable and we had an engaging visit. When in doubt, ask the gallery staff. At YSP in particular they are always friendly and helpful. Until 5 Jan 2020 DAVID SMITH will be found in the Underground Gallery and surrounding area. David Smith (1906-65) is the American artist who took sculpture off the plinth and made it in steel and stainless steel. We are so used to seeing what he developed that it perhaps sounds rather obvious. His work isn’t always beautiful, its hard edged and tough, but will be worth seeing, and hopefully the galleries will be well filled and stunning. www.ysp.co.uk Cupola Gallery 13 July - 24 August MAKERS MARK a group exhibition focusing on artwork where the touch of the artists’ hand is visible www.cupolagallery.com Gardens everywhere: The NGS open garden scheme is now in full swing with gardens opening up and down the country and many in our locality throughout the summer. Hello from Mayflower, Our Fundraising Ball is a distant memory, however the money raised was over £5000 which was a huge result for our Sanctuary. This money will be put to good use and help us enormously. Thank you everyone that attended our Red-Carpet Ball. The photographer was brilliant on the evening, also a big thank you to Tony from the Crown hotel and Paul who kept everyone on the dance floor all evening as well as participating in the raffle draw. The prestigious Eastside Magazine photographers also attended on the evening, again a big thank you. Lots of local business’s supported us on the evening by donating raffle prizes. They include, The Ship Inn at Newington, Mayflower at Austerfield, 4 Bottles of Champagne from various supporters. Also Deli 28, KSM, Bellezza, & Betsy Gray all from Tickhill. Walkers garden Centre and too many more to mention, however we really appreciate all the generosity of the small local businesses. So, a big thank you to all. I spoke in the last Magazine about Lottie who had serious ear canal tumours. She has had her operation which has been successful, however she will be deaf for the rest of her life. She is such a beautiful little girl but has a very nervous temperament, so needs that special home with special carers.

MARLO

Our Sponsored Dog Walk was a brilliant day out and so far, has raised £700 and lots more to come in. As you know we have a table top sale on the first Sunday of every month and it is advertised at the end of our lane. However, someone must have thought it was a huge joke to actually steal our board. So, if you are reading this and you are the culprits please return it immediately. We have a lovely Romanian dog in the office at the moment his name is Marlo. He looks like a small Shepherd and a very quiet boy. In the office is a lovely bed and blankets for him, however he prefers a box he has found in the office that seems to fit his needs perfectly I am not quite sure how he gets his legs in there but he seems happy.

Don’t forget our Annual Dog Show at the recreation ground in Tickhill is on the 7th July, please come along and support this super event. There will be Rosettes for 1st,2nd and 3rd in classes as well as stalls BBQ coffee and cakes. Please bring your own chairs and blankets for your picnic. We will be outside M&S on the 13th July rattling our bucket, please come along and say hello we love to hear your stories. Our number if you need it is 01302 711330 Best Wishes

LIFESTYLE

Holiday Time It’s that time of year again when boutique window displays are tempting us with beautiful swimwear … the realisation hits that summer holidays are almost here and we’re going to have to wear a swimsuit again! Yes, all the parts that we have managed to ignore all year by hiding under clothes will now be exposed for all to see. Generally, if you have a tummy that you prefer to keep hidden then a swimsuit is going to make you feel more confident. Look out for designs with a concealed panel that helps sculpt the body and hold everything in. Also the Tankini is a great in-betweener for the days when you want a bit more cover from your bikini, or alternatively want a bit of a change from your one-piece. There are a variety of combinations: plain, patterned, cropped, and under wired; with bottoms that are low-slung, sidetied, shorts…. Plain or patterned is down to taste but remember if you have a straight body, the geometric patterns will flatter you more than the more rounded, floral patterns, which will compete with your lines. Those are far more suited to curvier figures.

20

When it comes to colour, the same rules apply. Look for colours and shades that flatter your skin tone rather than contrast with it and it will knock pounds off. String tied bottoms are good for drawing the eye away from challenging areas and have the added benefit that you don’t tend to get tan marks. Be warned though, itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bikini bottoms are designed for itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bottoms. Those with a larger posterior will feel less exposed in a fuller style brief, or the short styles. Steer clear of patterns on any part of your body that you do not want attention drawn to, e.g. eyecatching designs on the cups of a bikini or tankini draw the eye directly to the bust. Finally, the classic string bikini. If you have an athletic or neat hourglass figure then go for it! Have fun with colour and patterns. It may be raining in Britain when you buy it but look forward to blue skies, warm sunshine and sipping that cocktail … Don’t forget that your beachwear pretty much takes the place of your underwear whilst you are

on holiday. If you usually need to wear a bra with a lot of support then your bikini needs to do the same. Many swimwear ranges are now available in a variety of cup sizes. Why it has taken so long to do something so obvious goodness only knows! Be a real beach babe: wear a hat to protect your hair and face in the midday sun. Simply pack your hat inside a suitcase by filling the crown with small items, such as underwear; place hat the right way up in the centre on the bottom of an empty suitcase; pack in remaining items around the hat to securely hold its shape.

Harworth Office

Make a Property Trust Will How do they work?

For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor.

All for

£300 inc VAT*

We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse/partner a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse/partner need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/partner remarry or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. Jones & Co is probably the best known firm of local Solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years. COMMUNITY Hi I have just been in touch with John who has arranged for me to email over to you details for an advert to be produced for the January edition of the Retford Life. I have attached our new logo and old leaflet. Please could you change

OSTEOPOROSIS

Reduced bone density is a normal part of the ageing process but in some people, this happens faster than normal. This is known as osteopenia in the early stages and osteoporosis as the bone loss becomes more significant. Reduced bone density increases the risk of fractures and this is commonly the point of diagnosis as up until then, the painless process of bone loss usually remains undetected. As early diagnosis is so difficult, it is really important to know who is most at risk and what action can be taken to reduce the risk of osteoporosis developing. Risk factors include… • Being female • Long term use of high dose steroid tablets • Family history • Low BMI • Heavy drinking and smoking • Other medical conditions including inflammatory conditions, hormone related conditions and malabsorption problems. The risk of developing osteoporosis can be reduced by… • Maintaining a healthy weight • Stopping smoking • Consuming sensible amounts of alcohol • Eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D • Taking a vitamin D supplement • Exercising Adults should be exercising for at least 2.5 hours per week with an additional 2 or more strengthening sessions. Weight bearing exercises and resistance exercises are most beneficial for bone density. Weight bearing exercises include anything performed on your feet and include walking, running, aerobics, dancing and racket sports (swimming and cycling do not count). Resistance exercises are any movements using weights or strong stretchy resistance bands and are particularly important for improving bone density in the arms.

At our June meeting, the Grand Parade team discussed plans for the next parade, scheduled for 2021. T We wondered about the ways to fund it and stage it with such a small group who meet. It was suggested that a lantern parade in the evening might be more manageable and garner more interest, getting more people involved. This could probably travel further afield to allow more people to see it. Such parades cost less to put on, with smaller items made, and with easier tuition. Lanterns can be made at home and have artificial lighting so are safe to carry by all who are prepared to walk with the parade. Other Yorkshire towns and cities have such parades and crowds flock to see them. We decided to put it to the vote, and the interest shown in the on line poll suggests there is definitely interest in this sort of parade rather than another like our previous three. We shall take this to our next meeting and discuss next steps. It will still rely on new members joining the team, but the comments that came with the vote suggest that some people would like to join us, and the more the merrier. Watch out for the meeting date in July – usually a Tuesday at 6 pm in the Holmescarr café. Check the Grand Parade Facebook page for more information and certainly join the page to give more of your views and comments. We will still need funding too, so we would be looking for more suggestions for ways to build up the money to stage the parade, no matter which way we go. We have had to rely on grants, and we shall be trying for more of these, but it would be good to think there is enough interest to do some fund-raising of our own. We’d love to see you at our next meeting.

COMMUNITY DO YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM A FRESHLY COOKED, 2-COURSE MEAL TWO DAYS A WEEK?

Have you heard of ROSSINGTON GOOD NEIGHBOURS

It continues to amaze me how many little gem footpaths there are around Doncaster. When I read “a leisurely walk to Blaxton and back to Finningley” I thought, “is it worth it, we’ve walked this area a thousand times?” But you know what, Hilda our walk leader, pulled it out of the bag, and took us places new and unexplored.

Eat in at Rossington Memorial Hall— £3.50 Or have the meals delivered—£4.00 Our meals are for anyone 50+ plus their carers, friends, relatives or neighbours or any vulnerable adult. •

I Love meeting old friends

I enjoy the dinners and the jokes

I like the companionship

I have my meals delivered—its great

Coming out to Good Neighbours saved my life!

Starting at the village green Hilda took us a short circuit round Finningly past the church and playing fields, over the railway and north to the eastern edge of Blaxton. We then continued north to High Common wood, then turning right and right again heading south to the west of Blaxton and back to Finningley where we made a final wider circuit of the village back to the green.

Yet this walk wasn’t just about the direction, or even the changing landscape, it was about the atmosphere, standing in the village green surrounded by ducks, or lost in a wood with bird song. Or diving through a tunnel of gorse as your mates disappear, then dancing around the edge of a puddle hoping not to fall in. This walk took us from field edge to forest and back to field edge, winding through the environs of Blaxton and Finningley, in some cases no more than 100 meters from houses, yet could be in the middle of nowhere! Places where memories of childhood adventures come back to life. That’s what a walk like this is all about. Brilliant Hilda thank you. Missed this one? There are plenty more Thursday walks to enjoy, visit our website for details We also have walks every Saturday and Tuesday, some local and some further afield, so there is sure to be something to suit you.

Rossington Parish Council

Chairman’s Report

organising refreshments to raise funds for the school.

Hello fellow Rossington folk. This is my first report as chairman of the Parish Council as I was only selected to serve as chair last month. Let me briefly introduce myself. My name is Ken Guest and I have lived in Rossington all my life. I spent my early years being brought up on Cherry Grove. I love living in the village and am passionate about it. I still believe we have a fantastic community and would love to bring back more of the old community spirit that was once so strong. I’m sure the embers are still there we just need to add a little fuel and we can reignite it. There is already loads of great work being done one example of which I will mention later.

The Rossington 3 Day Summer Festival The next major event being organised by the Parish Council is the annual Summer Festival. This takes place from Friday the 5th of July through to Sunday the 7th of July details of this including the band schedules are available on the Parish Councils face book page and on the posters and banners around the village. I would just like to say last years festival was a massive success and the bands that have been booked for this year are first class (check them out on you tube and their face book pages) and will make sure this years festival is a not to be missed event. Last year it was great to see families enjoying the sunshine, picnicking on the grass in front of the stage and riding the fairground rides. Let’s all hope the persistent rain we’ve had throughout June does one and we have another hot and sunny weekend for the festival. Come along and enjoy a fun filled weekend for all the family. I would just like to close this section by saying a massive thank you to everyone that work so hard to organise and deliver this enormous event

The Parish Council as always are very busy working for the community, I will list some of the projects and areas being developed alongside other things of interest to the village. The Doncaster Half Marathon This took place on Sunday the 9th of June and was a huge success. Curly’s Athletes did a brilliant job in organising this event which was the first marathon in the village for many years. 1400 people registered to take part in the event and everyone that participated finished the run. Thank you to everyone that lined the course to cheer on and support the runners. I’m sure that loads of funds were raised by the participants for the good causes they had chosen. A friend of mine came over from Eyam and ran the event, she told me that the best part of the course was running through the village with the constant cheering and high fiving. I think that any event that puts our community in the spotlight in a positive way can only be good for Rossington. . Well done to everyone that took part, Curly’s athletes for organising the event and all the residents that turned out to support it. Oh and a final well done to St Joseph’s School for

Flowerbeds and Planters As I write this the village flowerbeds and planters are being planted. I had a little chat with the workers planting the beds on the circle last Thursday 13/06/19 it was a very wet afternoon but they were doing a great job. The parish council also have some new planters to put under the new village signs and some used railing planters that Bob Anderson and I picked up from Sandal Park last week, these will also be planted shortly. I’m sure there is more that we could also do as residents to enhance our village and this may be something to consider in the future. This leads me nicely into my next two topics.

SCIENCE WEEK At primary school age, children are naturally curious, which makes science an ideal subject for them to learn. Science is all around us, it allows students to explore their world and discover new things. It is also an active subject, containing activities such as hands-on experiments. This also makes science well-suited to active, younger children. Science is an important part of the foundation for education for all children. St-Michael’s school, Rossington, wanted to enrich their children with science knowledge, fun and enthusiasm. They decided to create a ‘Science Week’ where all of the children in school were given the opportunity to explore, investigate and create a science experiment of their choosing. With the help and support of St-Michael’s staff and parents, children brought to school their creations. The experiments were displayed in the hall for everyone to see and learn from. On Friday 14th June, parents and governors were welcomed into school, to visit the science fair. At the fair, the fantastic year 6 children performed science experiments. Visitors were in awe of the children’s knowledge and enthusiasm for Science. Poppy Clish (Y6) enthusiastically said, “Our

T

teacher’s at St -Michael’s always plan fun science lessons, I love Science.” As part of the ‘Science Fair’ afternoon, there was a ‘Gadget Shop’ for children to buy science toys and activities. It was wonderful to see children so engaged and excited about science. Across school each teacher had planned science lessons in the afternoons, A group of KS1 children said, “In lessons we have learnt about exercise and eating healthy food, I like science “. At the end of the afternoon, Head of school (Mrs Cousins), presented children with certificates and Science Award stickers to celebrate their excellent work. Miss Webster (Science Lead) was overwhelmed with the response to the Science week at St – Michael’s, “Everyone has worked so hard, I am so impressed with the amount of work, effort and science skills used to create these wonderful science investigations.” St- Michael’s are now hoping that this will be an annual event for the school as it enabled children to discuss and discover science at home as well as at school. We thank Mrs Webster for her hard work in driving the teaching of Science across our school and for organising such a fantastic event for the whole school community.

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS

RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

A first for the village with the Doncaster half marathon coming though Rossington with Pastor Eric running to raise funds to keep the Methodist Church open for everyone to use. Lots of updates again as we focus on some long standing issues that shouldn’t still be a problem for residents – Bankwood Lane as well as new issues that have arisen with the opening of the Iport. Also some information about a new group starting and a thank you to the new litter picking group. Litter Pick

Gaynor and Dot and friends are doing a great job of organising litter picks and tidying up the village. Rachael attends them as well and on the last one we started at the market and did a number of the backs as well as the shop fronts and down to the Memorial Hall. It’s a good chance as well to look at where new bins are required. At the May litter pick Rachael was asked to see if an extra bin could be put near the co-op. The Council’s street scene team visited the area and will be putting a double bin where there is currently a single bin and the bin going across the road onto the corner where there seems to be a lot of litter. Everyone is welcome to attend. Heatherfields Crescent and problems around the Iport

We have been discussing these ongoing problems with Doncaster Council and meetings are taking place between DMBC and Amazon. With all new developments it is taking a lot of discussion to determine who is responsible for which areas and where vans are allowed to park. This area and the rest of West End Lane/Bankwood Lane currently doesn’t have any highways restrictions – despite us asking for them at the December planning meeting which would cause more problems for residents who live in the area. We are having meetings regularly to make sure that businesses come to the village and bring jobs but not at the expense of residents who have to suffer the impact. Bankwood Lane

We attended a meeting organised by the Parish Council to hear from Planning Officers and Ecopower Environmental as well as Tanks and Vessels and other businesses on Bankwood Lane. The outcome was that residents would be consulted about closing the lorry park (planning permission expired in early June). We have asked Planning Officers for everyone to be involved. The consultation closes at the end of June and a report will be taken to the next planning meeting to decide what to do. Residents who attended the meeting made their views very clear as we did. Also we are aware that some residents are getting flies again. The Planning Officer has advised that Ecopower have their own management plan and residents who have any complaints should contact the company in the first instance – their details can be found at http://ecope.co.uk/contact/ or ring them on 01302 868 200 alternatively please report concerns to Doncaster Council’s nuisance team on 01302-737573. We

42

are in contact with many residents who are affected by them but do contact and do report your concerns on the numbers provided. DHL

We are aware that whilst the DHL (yellow) lorries aren’t coming through the village, lorries that are attending the DHL site are still using Stripe Road rather than the route agreed. We are continuing to discuss this with DMBCs planning enforcement officers. Bfriend – social group

Bfriend is a fantastic group that supports people across Doncaster by providing a befriender in their own home. In addition they run social groups to reduce isolation and support people to socialise – all ages are welcome. They did have a group on the Radburn Estate last year and it is now starting again. It will be on every Tuesday from 1-3 at Ragusa Drive Communal Hall, Radburn Road, Rossington. DN11 OYN Meld Close, Radburn Road

It was good to be able to report that following many requests from a resident on Meld Close to have additional signing near Ragusa Hall, DMBC are now going to be putting in a new sign. Do you live on the Radburn Estate? – Next meeting is 10 July at 3pm

There is only one Tenants and Residents group left in the village now and Dave and Shirley who run it continue to do a great job. They meet on 2nd Wednesday of every month from 3pm at The Ragusa centre on Radburn road. All residents and tenants are welcome to attend and it’s a chance to ask questions and raise concerns – Rachael as your ward councillor attends and the St Leger officer will be there as well. Next surgery

Friday 12 July from 1245 -2pm at the café in Holmescarr Centre and from 2. 15 -4 at Miners Welfare on West End Lane. Starting from September we will be holding a Saturday morning surgery – further details in the next update. Please get in touch with us if we can assist in any way – we can deal with housing concerns, bins, pavements, roads, traffic, hedges, grass cutting, street scene as well as hearing your views on what improvements you would like to see. Please don’t wait for our surgeries, we can meet you anytime in Rossington. Please get in touch with us if we can assist in any way.
