NEW CELEBRITY LINE UP AND NEW LOOK FOR CLUMBER PARK’S FESTIVAL OF FOOD AND DRINK 2018 With five years already under its belt, the Festival of Food & Drink is bringing a new look and an all new celebrity chef line-up to the National Trust’s Clumber Park on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September. Michelin star chef Dan Doherty will make his Festival debut alongside his TV judging colleague Chris Bavin, who also stars on BBC’s Britain’s Best Home Cook with Dan alongside Mary Berry. Both will appear on the Saturday. On Sunday, Clumber Park will welcome Masterchef 2016 Champion Jane Devonshire and actress Gaynor Faye, best known for her roles in Coronation Street and Emmerdale, but now also making regular appearances in the kitchen on ITV’s Lorraine promoting Yorkshire cooking. All of the celebrity guests will be demonstrating their culinary skills in the freeto-attend Cookery Theatre, with seating for around 500 with standing room around the sides. They will also be meeting food fans and producers as well as signing copies of their books and taking those 4

much-coveted selfies. Festival organiser Bev Channell said: “We are thrilled with this year’s line-up of guests. They each bring such different cooking styles but the same passion for food to the event and I’m sure they will be a massive hit with visitors.” To celebrate its sixth year as the region’s biggest event of its kind, this year’s Clumber Park’s Festival of Food and Drink will see some exciting new interactive features launched as well as a brand new look. The first new feature is the launch of Gin School in association with Savour Magazine. For just £10, ‘pupils’ can learn all about the quintessential British spirit from our GINstructors, tasting taste seven different gins. As well as ‘ginspirational’ ideas on how to drink and what mixers, students also receive a goodie bag featuring discount vouchers and guides to try out crafty concoctions at home. Alongside the mouth watering menu of producers on offer in the Food & Drink Marquee, the Festival vibe continues with live music throughout the weekend,

alongside Street Food traders and Pop-Up Cafes. VIP tickets available for just £15 including priority parking, fast track entry, access to the VIP marquee with seating, an exclusive celebrity ‘meet and greet’ and a fabulous goody bag. Ticket prices start from just £7 in advance with free entry into Clumber Park included, offering a fantastic saving. Children aged five years and under are also admitted free. Family tickets are available, with entry for two adults and two children up to the age of 16 years, costing from £20. For more info, visit www. festivaloffoodanddrink.co.uk

WIN WIN WIN Today Magazine has secured ten pairs of tickets to giveaway for the Festival of Food and Drink, valid either day. DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Hope you are all enjoying the Summer - maybe it has been too hot for some, but lovely for the sun worshippers! Thank you to Tickhill Participation Group who invited us to their celebration of 70 years of the NHS on 22nd June. They raised £230 for our scanner appeal for which we are very grateful. The Simmons family who climbed Ben Nevis at midnight on 23rd June raised in excess of £500. They battled rain, freezing temperatures and high winds, but made it to the top. Congratulations and very well done Tracey, Dom and Jacob! We would also like to thank Eaton Electronics who recently donated £385. There are many more individuals and organisations who donated money, but space limits us to mention just a few. Thank you so much to everyone who has raised money on our behalf - we really do appreciate every penny. We have rearranged our Mile of Coins week (originally scheduled in May) to Monday, 13th August through to Friday, 17th August, 10am to 3pm in the Frenchgate Centre. Please come and say hello, bring your coins..... and paper money is also welcome too! We will be selling scarves at Auckley Show on 18th August so look out for our stall and bag a bargain. Throughout the year we are always collecting jewellery, scarves and tombola/raffle prizes. Please do get in touch if you have any unwanted items. We do our best to arrange collection if you cannot drop them off in town. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough florists). We are on the second floor (lift available) Room 209. Telephone 01302 325029 (answering machine if not in office). Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. If you would like to volunteer (and especially if you would like to join our committee) please do get in touch with us. You will be made very welcome. T 6

NEWS FROM THE EAST NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE INSPECTOR Dear Readers,

I trust you have been enjoying the great summer and hope it has not been too hot for you. The last month has offered some significant challenges for the police, and at the time of writing, the World Cup football tournament is drawing to a close with the semi-finals due to be played imminently. Such tournaments offer significant challenges to the police with the emotions of fans often running high, regardless of the result of the match. This year, the national team have enjoyed some great success and this has led to some public order issues having to be managed. The hot weather has also caused many to enjoy a few drinks before, during and after games, which has contributed to the problems. I hope readers have enjoyed the tournament but not over endulged! South Yorkshire Police have also been required to provide staff to support the Met Police with security during the attendance of President Trump to a conference in the London area. This has led to many officers having to work extended duties to cover for colleagues who have been pulled away. The hot days and warm nights over the last month or so have caused some people to leave house windows open both day and night, which can present the opportunist thief with the chance to easily enter and exit your house. I am aware of just one crime where this has happened and as the warm 12

ROSSINGTON TODAY

weather is forecast to continue at the time of writing, please remember to keep ground floor and easily accessible first floor windows closed at night wherever possible. Despite all of the above, in terms of overall crime, levels have continued to remain static with no particular emerging issues causing me any concerns. However, I urge readers to remain vigilante and ensure you implement simple crime prevention methods to reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of crime. You can look at this via our website – www.southyorks.police.uk I now offer a brief resume of the main crimes of interest, which have occurred in Rossington between 15th June and 10th July. Please note the crimes I have mentioned below do not reflect all crime which has taken place, but are those which I believe will be of more interest to readers. We recorded two attempt residential burglaries in Rossington. In one case the offender tried to kick the door open and in the other, cuts were made to the front door around the lock. We also recorded four commercial burglaries, although only one of these actually occurred in the village where a nursing home was attacked. The others occurred on the outskirts of the ward area. Furthermore, we saw one theft of a car which was actually domestic related and a further crime where someone tried to get into a vehicle without

success. Finally, we recorded two crimes where three vehicles were deliberately set alight. We also executed a drugs warrant at Norman Crescent and recovered a number of wraps of heroin, cocaine, some cannabis and cash. In terms of anti social behaviour, we have seen a reduction in complaints in Rossington during June with just seventeen incidents reported compared to twenty six in May. However, I am aware of an incident where a large group of young people was seen gathering near to the welfare ground recently. It seems they were anticipating a fight taking place between two girls. Finally, a reminder to come and meet your local police officer at our next ‘Partners and Communities Together Meeting’ (PACT) which will be held at the Ragusa Centre, Radburn Road on 30 August 2018, starting at 7pm. This will be a great opportunity to attend and raise any concerns you may have. Further details will be advertised locally, via our Facebook page, website and SYP alerts. Don’t forget you can access up to date information and stories from SYP via our Facebook page – just search for Doncaster East NHP. Alternatively, you can look at our website page – www.southyorks.police.uk.

A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP One of life’s under rated pleasures! Sadly thwarted by so many things so much of the time. We ask all our patients how well they sleep and it is a rare occasion to find people sleep well. Unfortunately, the consequences of poor sleep are far reaching…poor lifestyle choices regarding diet and exercise, increased stress, reduced work performance, increased pain, inactivity… Fortunately, there is much that can be done to facilitate a good night’s sleep… • Adopt good sleep habits. • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day, even at weekends. • Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet. • Be screen free 2 hours before bed. • Avoid caffeine close to bed time. • Choose gentle rather than vigorous exercise before bed. • If you have pain try some gentle stretches, practice relaxation, apply ice or heat or take some medication. Keeping a sleep diary can help you spot where the issues are. • Make sure your mattress is no more than 10 years old. It should be neither too firm nor too soft and should feel comfortable for you in your typical sleep position Pillows should support the head and neck in line with your trunk. Ask someone to take a photo of you in your sleep position so you can see if this is the case. Consider your position If you are disturbed through the night by pain or wake in discomfort it may be that your body is under undue stress whilst you’re sleeping. Experiment with your sleep position and try small cushions/ pillows for extra support where needed For more information please visit https://blizardphysiotherapy. co.uk/general-health-guides-1

Daisy Daisy... There are some flowers I love because they are show-stoppers, others because of their evocative scent, and some because they are unusual. Michaelmas daisies don’t tick any of those boxes, but I love them anyway. They are bright, cheerful, and completely undemanding - at home in the poorest, driest soils, and bees and butterflies love them! They get their common name from their flowering period, which peaks at Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael on September 5th, though they will carry on flowering well into late autumn. This means they are great for injecting colour into borders which can start to look a little washed-out and dreary in late summer. Until the mid-nineties, Michaelmas daisies were all known scientifically as asters, but then some were reclassified. Look out for the name Symphyotrichum, as many popular varieties now carry that name instead The gardener credited with popularising the Michaelmas daisy was Ernest Ballard. Many of the varieties he cultivated are still available and bear the names of his family members. “Ada Ballard” is named for his sister and is lavender blue, “Marie Ballard” is a pretty pale blue double bloom named for his wife. He is also responsible for “Prosperity” and “Peace”, rose-pink and deep mauve respectively, which he named straight after the First World War. 30 ROSSINGTON TODAY

If you want a tallish variety suitable for the middle of the border, try “Little Carlow” which grows to about 90cm and produces masses of violet-blue blooms. One of my favourites for the back of the border is “Calliope” which has striking black elegant stems that reach heights of 2m, smothered in delicate lilac flowers. A good small variety is “Beggarten” which is pale blue, compact and clump-forming. “Tonga” is also smaller and is a lovely deep purple which looks great in a container. Although they are not high-maintenance plants Michaelmas daisies benefit from being cut down to ground level in late autumn and covered in a good mulch of well-rotted organic matter. And that’s all there is to it!

TVI’s full profession team explained that they have submitted representations to the Doncaster Council on the proposed access scheme where they have suggested improvements to the road design. These improvement will enable TVI to develop a new Business Park on their 44 acres of land. The Parish Council holds committee meetings on Tuesday evenings throughout the year (apart from August). All our agendas are posted on our Facebook page and Website. Each has the agenda item ‘Public Session’. Within this timed session, you have the opportunity to ask questions of Parish and Ward Councillors. If your question cannot be answered at that meeting, it will be put on the agenda for the next meeting.

Lovely Lurchers and Gorgeous Greyhounds This month, your local RSPCA Animal Centre is focussing on beautiful rescue Lurchers and Greyhounds. They are independent thinkers, intelligent and highly trainable, and they love a puzzle, such as where have you hidden the biscuits. Keeping Lurchers and Greyhounds in tip top condition takes a lot less effort than you would think. Calm and affectionate, they make a super family pet and are intensely loyal. They have a keen instinct for exercise, they are speedy but only use it in short bursts where they use up usually all of their energy in one sprint and then promptly retire to a comfy bed. They are gentle and affectionate but love a good tug o’ war or to chew a toy in between naps. They sleep in really weird positions – usually on their back in a sunny spot on the floor, or your couch, with their head twisted awkwardly and their legs contorted. You get accustomed to it, but at first it can be quite startling; yes they are comfortable. They are also adorable! From their bright glossy eyes, their pricked up ears, and their big goofy noses to their long, swishy waggy tails, Lurchers and Greyhounds are hard not to fall head over heels in love with once you get to know them. Come and see our beautiful boys and girls, they are waiting just for you. The RSPCA Animal Centre on the Great North Road, near Bawtry, DN10 6DE, is open six days a week 11am-4pm (closed Wednesdays). Also visit www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk for the latest news and more information on how you can help support our animal welfare operations. T

Which summers do you remember as hot as this one? All of us have memories of childhood summers which seemed to go on forever, but then ended too soon as we headed back to school. Mine involves pea picking in July and going to the fair at the back of Allenby Crescent when the corn had become straw. They also involve a broken arm that was splinted rather than put in plaster, and the night was so warm that I unwrapped the crepe bandage. Fortunately, I left the metal splints in place. We’d love to hear about your favourite memory of summer. Was it in Rossington or was it your holiday trip on a train from Rossington station or one of the Rossie Motors buses? Have you got photos to share? This one is a game of pushball on Whitby beach which included Brian Royle who has given his memories to the website. Here you can see the winning team for the Daily Mirror competition in 1965. Was that a chilly summer if they were still wearing sweaters? This month has been frustrating from the upload or input viewpoint. The website has been down and is currently undergoing maintenance. It holds a lot of information, so it is a big one to look after. It would be good to have lots of new data and photos to upload when it is back up and running. Have you got anything – photos or stories – past and present - that you would like to share on the website or appear in the Library? We would love to hear from more of you who have memories that are on tape or are written so that they can go on record. If you have not got that far, we can take recordings of those memories. Talk to us on 07771 672561. www.Rossington-villagelife.co.uk T

COUNTRY ACTS for Rossington Ex-Servicemen’s Club, West End Lane, Rossington COUNTRY MUSIC every Wednesday

Doncaster Ramblers Walking Festival 26th May – 3rd June 2018 Jokingly we said at the start of this venture,“ If we get one Doncaster resident to start walking regularly, it would be a success”. We aimed to share the joy of walking with our fellow Doncastrians. And so they came, mostly in small groups, families, individuals, couples,163 non-ramblers in fact during the 9 day Festival, taking in 27 separate events and 148 miles. Thirteen people including a family with children enjoyed a lovely walk from Markham Grange on Sunday 27th May, crossing fields in bright sunshine but with a cooling breeze, and through Hampole Wood in the shade. A young walker took over the leader’s yellow ‘jersey’ for part of the walk one for the future perhaps? Around fifteen participants joined a speciality walk and enjoyed learning about some common, and some slightly more unusual trees while enjoying a five mile walk. Coppiced hazel, Cedar of Lebanon, Black Locust and Larch were among the many specimens and, hopefully, those attending can answer questions like :- Which tree 40 ROSSINGTON TODAY

has “keys”? What is the world’s oldest wooden artefact? What held Viking longboats together? Which tree should you avoid parking under? The 12 who joined the 31st May walk using public transport to reach the start at Bentley, and were surprised to discover that you can find tranquil & attractive countryside within a stone’s throw of some of Doncaster’s busiest villages. Our Festival ended with a guided tour through Hatfield Moors to view the cotton grass and conservation work being done by Thorne & Hatfield Moors Conservation Forum. All of us, Ramblers and public alike marvelled at the snowy landscape. One more walker or not, we think the whole thing was a success. All 163 members of the public who enjoyed our Festival, were automatically entered into a prize draw, and two lucky winners received prizes donated by GoOutdoors Doncaster.
