Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium Diggles Lodge Lane, Ranby, Retford DN22 8QJ

You’ve potentially made the difficult decision as to whether or not you will be buried or cremated – if it’s a cremation, what should you or your family now be looking at in terms of ensuring that you select the right crematorium? If you want an experience that your loved ones will remember for all the right reasons, then you should be looking towards the new Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium. WHY? Who better to look after you than a facility that is family owned, with our directors having over 90 years collective experience in the funeral sector — as a result we’re totally committed to providing exceptional standards of service to the bereaved families that use our facilities. Our mission statement is about doing just that - clearly others think we do too, as in 2017 Memoria’s South Oxfordshire Crematorium & Memorial Park was named as ‘Best Crematorium in the UK’ at the Good Funeral Awards with our other seven sites all featuring in the top ten!

In early February, Memoria opened its newest crematorium at Barnby Moor, serving directly the communities of Doncaster, Bawtry and surrounding areas. So, what can you expect? Unlike most crematoria who offer just 40 minute or even half an hour services, as a market leader we provide as a basic service element, a full one-hour service time. This is so families are not then caught-up in a constant conveyor belt type scenario whereby they see other mourners either departing as they arrive or when they depart themselves the next funeral cortege is already in view — this in our opinion isn’t conducive to a positive experience. These 60 minutes guarantee time for the bereaved to adequately celebrate and remember their loved one, peruse floral tributes and chat with friends at their leisure without the added pressure of feeling they have to vacate the site once the service or ceremony is over.

THE AMBIANCE OF THE SITE IS FURTHER COMPLIMENTED BY: • A Service Chapel with a capacity for over 100 seats • Dedicated clergy facilities • Extensive Memorial gardens for cremated remains • Well laid out car parking with safe access • Disabled access and hearing loop • Comfortable soft furnishings with a neutral soft colour scheme. • Choice of advanced music system or live organ • Web camera with live streaming capabilities for those friends and family who may be unable to attend • Plasma television screens for photo dedication/eulogy’s • All set in a beautiful tranquil countryside environment with stunning water features & extensive gardens. • Wesley Music system with an almost infinite music library to cater for all requests. • Uniquely for the area our grounds also include a dedicated section for traditional burials. Please ask your local Funeral Director for further information or if you are able please drop in for a chat, our staff will be only too pleased to show you the facilities we have on-site.

Good High street agents such as Johnsons achieve more viewings, more offers and in almost 75% of cases a better price than on-line only agents. This is according to research from the ‘The Advisory’, an independent consumer advice group for house sellers, and comes as no surprise to many.

I was a kid and I was hurt. That’s all I knew. Fast forward about 8 years. I was in high school, liking it and doing pretty well. It was a small school (about 300 teens) and everyone knew everyone. My athletics mate was dating a girl in my maths class. They had gotten into the church thing and then invited me. Me?! You’ve got to be kidding. But they kept after me. Honestly, I was curious. Was there something to this? What about this Dad thing. I had gotten over that (or at least for a group that would work well as a team. Yes I thought I had) and didn’t think it a big deal any more. STEP INTO SPRING!

T

Spring is the season of new beginnings. From warmer weather and longer days to flowers blooming and the budding of leaves, there is no better time to have a fresh start and a good old de-clutter. Here at the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, our charity shops are a vital source of income and awareness for our Centre and our animal welfare work. Every purchase and donation made at one of our five shops helps us to continue our rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming work. The shops rely on kind donations from the public to keep shop floors full of bargain finds and little treasures, so why not declutter and donate this spring? Our charity shops are at The Courtyard, Bawtry; High Street, Rotherham, Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington; Field Street, Thorne and on eBay. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. We are always grateful of donations ranging from clothing to small furniture and everything in between. These can be dropped off at any of our five locations, or collected by our volunteer drivers by calling 01302 719790. There are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We also provide dog training, off lead facilities, a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets.

ANYONE FOR CROQUET ? T

When English Heritage took over Brodsworth Hall, more than twenty years ago, the Croquet Association asked whether they could set up a Croquet Club to play on the croquet lawns there. Sheila Lines was a Physical Education lecturer at Lady Mabel College at Wentworth Woodhouse, who had recently retired. She and Carolyn Walker, also a PE lecturer, took on the task although they knew nothing about croquet. They visited many croquet clubs and decided the Golf Croquet was an easier game for beginners, who could progress to Association Croquet if they wished. The gardens were overgrown, so the lawns had to be gradually restored to a suitable length, hoops and mallets were acquired, a rule book was written and a meeting at St Mary’s Church Hall was advertised for prospective players. A few people turned up and slowly the club grew. Since then Brodsworth Hall has been conserved and the gardens have been restored to their Victorian glory, now winning many awards. Now the club enjoys playing in the beautiful surroundings on most days when the Hall is open. The original club rules state that whites must be worn and this tradition is continued to enhance the atmosphere. Visitors enjoy the unique experience of watching the games, most people’s knowledge of croquet is from Alice in Wonderland, and so we are always willing to explain how we play. It is a game of skill and tactics, not just hitting balls through hoops. The aim is to get your ball through the hoop before your opponents, while preventing them by blocking or hitting away their balls. Hoops are played in a set order. Four balls are always used. When playing singles two players have two balls each, for doubles four players have one ball each and play in pairs. The first ball through the hoop wins that point and everyone plays on to the next hoop. Club members do not need to be English Heritage members to play at Brodsworth and the annual subscription is not expensive, there are no green fees or extras to pay. We do play friendly matches with other clubs and more competitive matches in the Yorkshire Federation. If you would like to experience playing in the beautiful surroundings of Brodsworth, with friendly people, the club is holding taster mornings on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 23th May. You will be met at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am and taken to the lawns. Equipment and instruction will be provided; all you need are flat shoes. We look forward to seeing you there!

Tornedale Nursery have been celebrating World Book Day! On Thursday 7 March the children dressed up in brightly coloured clothing and we read the story The Day the Crayons Came Home (following on from last year’s The Day the Crayons Quit). Over the week the children took part in a variety of activities relating to the story, including making crayon collages, using different sized crayons to measure, and writing a postcard home to their family. We then invited parent in to share a story with us and are now setting up a weekly stay and read session with parents to promote a love of learning.

We are very lucky within Tornedale Nursery that we have 2 full-time members of staff (a qualified Teacher and Nursery Nurse) and two Teaching Assistants who job-share, so we can provide lots of opportunities and support for the children. For example, to follow-up on writing the post card home, this week the children walked to the local post box to put this postcard in the mail. This was an exciting experience for the children, who are now looking forward to the postcard being delivered to their door by the postal worker.

Tornedale School Choir takes part in Music Project at the Cast On Thursday 7 March, Tornedale School Choir were invited to take part in a brilliant music project following the trials and tribulations of Giddy Goat at the Cast in Doncaster. The interactive concert was performed by Ensemble 360 and narrator Polly Ives with

lots of audience participation and image projections from the story. Miss Coxon, the leader of the School Choir, said the children had a wonderful time engaging in top quality musicmaking alongside professional musicians.

Monty Male 8 Years Feb 2019 Possibly No Older

Monty’s owner moved and cruelly left him behind to fend for himself on the streets. Luckily a neighbour recognised him scavenging for a meal in the bins and took him in. She has been taking care of him for a while now but unfortunately has to move and isn’t able to take him with her. Not wanting to leave him behind to a uncertain future, she contacted Mayflower for help. So here he is looking for a new home. Monty is an independent little chap who is very fussy but likes it to be on his own terms. He is happy to come to you for fusses but doesn’t like to be picked up or cuddled. As a former stray he has obviously been outside so would probably be happiest with a secure garden to explore away from busy roads for his safety. We are unsure how he will react to dogs but he certainly wont appreciate living with another cat I’m afraid. Don’t pass him by, call him and I’m sure he will come running out to greet you.

Name: Sex: Age: Came into care: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Good with children:

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

HMP Lindholme is close to Hatfield Woodhouse and Doncaster, a Category C training prison, with around 1,000 prisoners. We perform vital roles for Ministers and the public providing an unbiased oversight of the prison. Members are unpaid but claim costs for travel and financial loss. Duties include; monitoring fairness and humanity, the range and adequacy of programmes, taking prisoner applications, raising concerns with the Governor and reporting annually to the Minister. Applicants must be over 18 with a mature outlook on life and live within 30 miles of the prison. We welcome all who are interested and strive to achieve a balanced Board. Applicants must possess the interest and time, about 5 days a month, to make a full contribution, which can include callouts to the prison (at any time) for incidents, so full training is given. Members are open minded, committed to diversity equality and human rights, able to challenge, with the ability to maintain confidentiality, we are good team players and have the willingness to take responsibility. If you’re interested, application packs and details are available from; www.justice.gov.uk/jobs/independent-monitoring-board or, telephone 020 333 432 65, with your details and an application will be sent to you. LIFESTYLE

Looking back to step forward

Think about the beliefs you hold strongest about yourself, are they actually accurate?

and not yours that you hear.

Often when coaching people I hear sentences such as “someone like me couldn’t do this/that” or other self-limiting beliefs.

You failed to build a business = I can never build a business. Opinion or fact?

They never even began to fulfil their full potential simply because they never saw the point in even starting, after all, they were bound to fail. Commonly it’s a specific event, conversation or experience that lead them to this opinion that they now hold as a fact forever. They were told by someone they trusted they weren’t smart enough, pretty enough or perhaps they themselves attempted a goal and fell short. This negative experience is then taken as an immovable fact. Interestingly, if the negative experience did involve another person, listen to your thoughts, often you may notice it’s their voice

24

Most of the time, it isn’t about what happened to us, it’s how we view what happened to us and what we feel that says about us that counts.

You failed to get in great shape = It’s impossible for me to ever be fit and healthy. Opinion or fact? People will laugh if I try and fail = I can never make another attempt. Opinion or fact? Every outcome in your life will be a result of the actions you take, change your actions to change your results. Of course, it’s not easy. Sometimes we may need to seek help in putting the past events behind us, I’m not in your shoes. But we all have a story to tell, it’d be such a shame if yours was less than it could be at the end of it all simply because you allowed someone or something to dissuade you. Even accepting that you are in the

driving seat and you can create new results in whatever area of your life you choose is very powerful…hope! The World is jam packed full of rags to riches, failure to success and the impossible becoming possible. Why not you? Why not now? Every one of them started as an “ordinary” person. They simply focused on controlling the now, altering their self-perception and letting the results flow. I hope you find some time to reflect on what’s holding you back from what you truly want, you may find a simple answer that you can then do something about. Go create a day and life that counts, always have more desires than excuses. To Your Success!

Make running social. Running with others helps with motivation and also sharing a common interest. With Park run available free every weekend this is the perfect opportunity to run with others. Get the right kit. Running is one of the simplest and cheapest forms of exercise but making an investment into a decent pair of running shoes is worth the small investment. Being part of Slimming World is not just about getting fitter, healthier and happier for yourself, it’s also about helping others. Every Year Slimming World takes part in the ‘biggest clothes throw’ where members fill purple bags full of clothes that no longer fit & donate them to Cancer Research shops. This takes place nationwide & last year raised £3.3million. We are hoping to smash that total again this year. During March, Julie & her members filled 100 bags to help towards raising that total. Everyone is so proud to be part of something that not only cares

about its members well-being, but that of others too as Cancer can affect everyone in one way or another.

ST MICHAEL’S ORCHESTRA PERFORM WITH

STATUS QUO

T

On Wednesday 27th February, Jeff Rich, best known as the drummer from the legendary rock group – Status Quo, visited Rossington St Michael’s Primary School to deliver a fantastic drum masterclass to the whole school. During the masterclass, Jeff Rich demonstrated his versatility on a variety of drums dating back through history with the help of individual children. He then invited the whole of Key Stage Two to play percussion with him as he kept everyone in time on his highly impressive drum kit followed by a repeat performance for Key Stage One. Music is a big part of St Michael’s School and the school orchestra didn’t miss the chance to join forces with the rock musician for a performance of some famous pop songs. Jeff commented after that he hadn’t heard a primary school ensemble play as well as St Michael’s, playing with great control and musicianship. This was great encouragement to the children as they are preparing for the Robin Hood Music Festival later this month. Right at the end of the masterclass, Jeff presented Annabelle, who is only 5, and has just recently taken her Grade One drum exam, with a pair of his own signed drum sticks to encourage her to continue with her drumming. The whole school, both staff and pupils, really enjoyed the hands-on experience that Jeff Rich brought to the school that morning and, as a school, are continuing to look for more and more ways to encourage as many children as possible to get involved in performing music.

WE LOVE ROSSINGTON T

The artist from The Point in Doncaster came to work with the school on a ‘We Love Rossington’ art project. Each year group from reception to year 2 had two sessions each with the artist in which they helped create our wonderful school entrance display. The display incorporates the Rossington Miners Wheel which is an important symbol/feature in the Rossington community. The children were taught printing techniques and how to draw portraits during the sessions.

IN THE GARDEN

Open Your Garden This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens. Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too.

34

It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons. You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best. And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Happy gardening.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Wonderful news!!

We have reached our target to buy the CT scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has donated towards this appeal, to those who fundraised on our behalf and to the organisations who helped us - we couldn't have done it without you all. Our thanks also to our lovely volunteers who always answer our requests for help. Initial work started on the new CT suite at DRI in February which will house two CT scanners and should be operational by early 2020. We will keep you updated. Our new fundraising appeal is for prostate cancer. The NHS states that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year. We plan to raise £150,000 to buy a Transperineal Prostate Biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. This machine is critical in effectively diagnosing prostate cancer in men and also plays a crucial role in planning the most appropriate treatment plan for the patient. If you have any fundraising ideas to help buy this desperately needed equipment please do get in touch with us. Don't forget our Mile of Coins will be in

The social bowling section had 1 new member sign up with about 6 going to have a go first to see if it’s for them. Of course, we have the ladies to come along as well. So good stuff. I will keep a monthly report ongoing in this magazine, and also the weekly fixtures and results will be open to view on our new Facebook page for those who are interested. Yours in Bowling,

Tickhill & District Lions Like to get involved with Lions? We need male & female members!

The residents of Bawtry, Bircotes, Harworth, Loversall, Rossington, Tickhill and Wadworth are very generous when we ask for donations to help support good causes but have you ever thought about joining the Lions? What’s stopping you?

Who we are:

We are a group of 29 men and women from a wide range of backgrounds with a spread of ages from 30s to retirees, who want to increase our numbers across the entire district.

How we operate:

We are separated into two sections, Welfare Committee “those who spend money,” meet fortnightly (in a private room in a pub) to discuss and where necessary decide how to investigate requests for help. If we decide to help we will then put our proposal to the entire club the following week when we meet for the Business Meeting at Tickhill Cricket Club. All members then vote on these proposals. Activities Committee “those who raise money,” meet fortnightly (in a different pub to the Welfare Committee) to discuss fund raising activities, these would include annual events such as the Santa Float and Firework Extravaganza, but there

are many other events and organisations that we support throughout the year with activities such as Race Nights, Casino Nights and disabled sports days and outings. All events are then discussed and agreed at the Business Meeting the following week.

What to do next:

Contact any Lion to arrange an informal meeting with two of our Membership Committee to see if we like you and most of all you like us. You would then be invited to attend three meetings, a Welfare Committee Meeting, an Activities Meeting and a Business Meeting. It would then be time for you and us to decide whether to proceed. It’s as simple as that.

Being a member:

It is hoped that all members will attend every week, but we are realistic and understand that every member freely gives of their time whenever they can, not just to attend our meetings but also to help at the events arranged by the Activities Committee. So, yes, joining the Lions is a commitment but we are a social group who enjoy each other’s company whilst helping others.

PS. And have fun doing it!

For more information see our advert in this issue Each Lion and every club is changing lives in ways both great and small. Service is a personal commitment that impacts the people serving and the people we serve. Litter Bin Competition

Follow us on our Facebook Page Rossington Parish Council where you will find a wide variety of information on such as local road closures, concerns such as on Bankwood Lane, local support groups, events, walks and so much more.

Doncaster Council Neighbourhood Team, the Parish Council, local schools and local partners are looking into running a Litter Bin Competition where local school children can come up with a creative design to encourage residents to put their rubbish in the bin. The winning design will be posted on all the bins in Rossington. Alongside this, there will be education in schools, getting involved in the Great British Spring Clean, organising volunteer litter picks and looking into the possibility of employing a Barrowman.

Parish Council Meeting on 12 February 2019 Chief Inspector Andy Hunt and Sergeant Liam Walters attended the meeting. For more information please read the minutes on our Facebook Page or Website. Inspector Hunt confirmed they would be regularly attending the Parish Council meetings so if you have any concerns, please come along to the meetings. Another guest at the meeting was Duncan Armstrong Payne, the Associate Director of Harworth Estates. Duncan gave an update on all that is happening on the former pit site. Once again for more information, please read the minutes.

Flower beds Last year the council decided to plant perennial plants in the flower beds so they should be nicely established this year. There will also be summer annual plants to add a splash of colour. If you are a keen gardener and would like to make sure the beds in Rossington are at their best, please feel free to do a bit of weeding.

Christmas Lights The Council will be discussing Christmas Lights at the next Project Committee Meeting. Feedback from residents was once again really positive. However, in response we shall be looking at more spheres and icicles in the trees with Christmas lights and lamppost decorations on the new part of West End Lane. If you feel other lampposts need lighting up, please ring Anne on 01302 864731 or Mobile: 07402 206667

There has been interest from another local group to purchase the Church, they are currently looking into fund raising to purchase the building so a community facility will remain in Rossington.

ROSSINGTON PARISH COUNCIL’S

EASTER EGGSTRAVAGANZA

Committee Meetings The Parish Council holds its full Council meetings on the second Tuesday of the month throughout the year (apart from August). Other committee meetings are usually on a Tuesday evening. All our agendas are posted on our Facebook page with agendas and minutes on our Website. Every meeting has a 15-minutes ‘Public Session’ where members of the public are welcome to ask questions of Parish Cllrs and Ward Cllrs. If your question cannot be answered at that meeting, it will be put on the agenda for the next meeting.

COMMUNITY
