ROSE FIRTH – GREAT BASSETLAW FLOWER SHOW Who are and what do The Friends of Doncaster Museum do? Their lectures are listed on this page and I know some of you are curious. They meet monthly to enjoy a talk on the arts or heritage, but their main purpose is to support the Museum and Art Gallery and each year, the Friends identify a way to support the development of the Museum through fundraising activities. The 2019 target is to fund a mobile planetarium at the museum which will be there for at least two events, to encourage families to experience the inspiration of space whilst celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing; these events will be free. Also, The Friends will fund the membership of The Contemporary Arts Society, an organisation which has been in operation for almost a hundred years and during that time has bought and gifted many valuable works of art to galleries across the country. Doncaster, during a previous period of membership was allocated seventy works of art, including some of the most valuable in the collection. By raising the funds to pay for a renewal of membership, Doncaster Museum will continue to develop its art collection into the future. Doncaster Civic Trust has donated £2000 towards the new membership, and a very successful fundraising event with Gervase Phinn boosted funds further. If you wish to join the Friends, come along to one of their advertised meetings. The monthly meeting of the Group took place on Tuesday 4 September 2018. Present were Sheila Place, Nottinghamshire County Councillor, and Dave Challinor, Bassetlaw District Councillor. They talked to the group about the pressing issue of the proposed Waste to Energy Incinerator, which would be sited on the very edge of our Town. The Town Council, Bassetlaw District Councillors, County Councillor Sheila Place, and our MP John Mann, are all working together to oppose this. Whilst we understand the concept of using waste to produce energy, it most certainly is in the wrong place, and goes against everything which went into the Neighbourhood Plan and the Strategic Intervention Plan produced by District Council. Everyone who is opposed should be putting their objections in writing to Mike +DQNLQ 3ODQQLQJ 2É? FHU DW Nottinghamshire County Council. Following John Mann’s advice, we should be concentrating on the planning issues rather than environmental issues, as these can always be amended and they would win on appeal. We should be pointing out the proximity of the proposed incinerator to housing, an existing primary school, and a further proposed primary school. The number of HGVs which it is stated will be required is vastly underestimated, as WKH Č´ JXUHV GR QRW LQFOXGH WKH further vehicles required to remove the resulting ash from the site. This would mean a huge loss of employment opportunities for this area. Also, the housing being built would VXÎ? HU DQG ZH FRXOG Č´ QLVK XS ZLWK D ODUJH QXPEHU RI GLÉ? FXOW to sell houses. Already people have said they would not have bought their houses here had they had any idea this would be happening. This town has moved on from being a mining community. We deserve better. The closing date for objections has been extended to 30 September. The two councillors also touched on the problems surrounding the current use of the Avondale Nursing Home. As this did not require change of use consent from planners, it was as much a surprise to District Council and Town Council, as it was to local residents. It was pointed out that we already had issues with drug abuse and drinking, but it is important that the incidents which have been observed should be reported to the police. Postings about it on Facebook do not get it sorted but reports to the police will. Regarding the Old Vicarage which had been set alight, it is owned by a consortium based in London, and it had been left for the District Council to try to secure the premises, but we are all aware we have a serious arsonist or arsonists in the town, and they managed to gain access and the rest is history. To suggest that “councilâ€? be it District, Town or County Council

Fly tipping was discussed and Dave Challoner said he is happy for people to video evidence and send it to him and he will follow it up. Well it seems that summer whizzed by in D Čľ DVK DQG %LUFRWHV Swimming Club took a well deserved break – although our swimmers kept on swimming in their leisure time and on their holidays. We returned with a vengeance DQG FR PSHWHG LQ RXU Č´ UVW HYHQW at Ponds Forge: the Robin Hood 2018 Open Meet hosted by Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club. We took 16 swimmers (some of our swimmers are pictured at the event) and competed in a total of 66 races. We had a great success with a great haul of Personal Bests, some swimmers achieving medals (Dom and Jake) and 2 more swimmers achieving County times (Seb and Jake) in 2 events. We know exactly what we need to focus on to continue improving and shaving milliseconds (yes, it is PLOOLVHFRQGV WKDW FRXQW RÎ? those race times. Elliot Clogg, an ex-member of the hosting club and Commonwealth swimmer was also present at the gala, and some of our swimmers were lucky enough to meet him.

An update from our Swimathon which you may recall was held in August. This was a sponsored swim (notably on an incredibly hot day, when the poolside RÉ? FLDOV ZHUH ZLOWLQJ DQG WKH\ weren’t the ones swimming for miles!). We raised a grand total of ÂŁ704 to be shared equally between Asthma UK and the Club. Thank you to all those who supported the swimmers which included some as young as 6, and others who swam distances of 5 miles. We have a packed calendar of events coming up – we have a friendly gala with Retford Swimming Club for the younger members of our Club and a big gala for the older competing swimmers the following week in Matlock. By the time you read this, we will have competed at both of those and be preparing for our next one a few weeks later. We wish our swimmers every success and hope to continue gathering a haul of PBs, medals and County times. 6DEEDWLFDO 'HDU Friends, I decided to end my sabbatical by visiting my family and friends in my home country, Ghana, in May. I chose the month of May because I thought that being the start of the monsoon season, the weather would be a bit colder than the normal Ghanaian hot weather. I was proved wrong. It only rained twice in three weeks and the temperature was so high that I could not move about freely. Interestingly, I came back to England and thought to myself, ‘thank goodness to be back’. I was proved wrong for almost three months. I had not endured a season of high humidity and dryness since being in England for 17 years. However, someone may ask why a bloke who was born and bred in tropical Ghana would complain about the hot weather. My response is, why wouldn’t I? Trying to acclimatise in England for 17 years has made me to appreciate the freshness of the British summer. As the heat ravaged on in the summer, I had the chance to engage with many people in the community and at church. Most people enjoyed the hot weather. However, I realised that there were some who were struggling with their health in the hot weather. I saw some people struggling to breath and move about gracefully due to the heat. I also realised that as most people made the most of the weather, more waste was generated. Some people even went further and littered some of the waste in the streets and the woods. I wonder if those who littered our streets and ZRRGV FRQVLGHUHG WKH HÎ? HFW RI WKHLU DFWLRQV RQ others. The bible states, “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophetsâ€? (Matthew 7: 12). Some of these people do not realise that such acts, directly or indirectly, contribute to the harsh climate changes we are enduring now – KRW VXPPHUV FROG VQDSV LQ WKH ZLQWHU Čľ RRGLQJ droughts, etc. On the other hand, some people WKLQN WKDW FOLPDWH FKDQJH LV D P\WK DQG LWV HÎ? Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - OCTOBER 2018

Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine, and you can access the Council website and the Council Facebook page. Any queries: contact me or other councillors, we will, as always, try to help STAYING POSITIVE, STAYING DETERMINED Public Meeting, 3rd September, Re: Harworth and Bircotes Campaign Against the Proposed Incinerator. This was a very positive meeting led by John Mann M.P. The Town Hall was packed, and people had many questions, comments and concerns; several key points emerged: 1. There were still people who didn’t know much about the incinerator; there was a need to continue getting the facts 32 HARWORTH TODAY

It was important to include objections related to the issues on which Planning Committees base their decisions, such as noise, WUDÉ?F LPSDFW RQ KRXVLQJ business and the future development of our Town.

people of Harworth and Bircotes treated him with great respect (you were brilliant!)

Local businesses on the Business Parks have also been active, working together, sharing information, and meeting to discuss their objections to the incinerator – I was happy to help in any way I could, and keep them aware of all action taken by this Council. A Personal Comment: August is traditionally a quiet time for Follow-on Action by the Town councils, but not this year at Harworth and Bircotes – it’s Council: 1.
