Welcome to the

November 2019 edition

Today

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dreamC.”S. Lewis Once again, the year is racing by, Halloween and Bonfire Night are upon us and Christmas is only just around the corner. Lots of activities and events are being promoted on these pages – we are lucky to live in such active communities. By the time you receive this issue, the chances are the clocks will have gone back and the evenings will be drawing in. If you receive an early magazine delivery – don’t forget to change your clocks first thing on Sunday 27th October. Are you getting organised yet? As usual I’m not! Last month I urged you to consider anything you wanted to get done or achieve before Christmas and to get yourself booked in with the many businesses offering their services within these pages. For many things there will still be time, but don’t wait too long! The December issue will be delivered to you late November, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th November. This will of course be the Christmas issue, and it is always a jam-packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas Fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you get your items to me in good time if you have something you would like included.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS DINNER

T

Hello, I am Katie and as part of my new role as a Vicecaptain for Bircotes Swimming Club I’d like to share both our most recent achievements, as well as an insight into the experience of a member of our club.

Are you on your own on Christmas day ? No family around ? We are organizing a Christmas Dinner for people who are on their own or have no family. Bawtry Memorial Sports Ground 25th December 12:30pm For more information or to book a place contact Jessica after 5pm on 07495 785476 Transport available Booking is essential Last date for bookings is 15th December Limited spaces available

Being a member of Bircotes Swimming Club provides many unique skills and experiences for children of all ages. By swimming with us you learn the competitive side of the sport and become able to represent both the club, but also yourself, with skills that could take you far in the sport; many of our swimmers are at county level, and some regional too. I enjoy swimming for the club because, as well as my own personal achievements, I have an influence and role in the accomplishments of others, especially the younger teammates I work with. Part of my role means I help to encourage, mentor and guide younger swimmers regularly, both in training and competition. I find this opportunity very rewarding and I am proud to be a member of the club helping others. An example of these achievements can be shown in our latest Time Trials where we saw some fantastic results. 46 swimmers took part in the trials, 5 of which for the first time. The trials are a great for our newer swimmers, that may have not competed before, as they provide an opportunity to do so in a fun and enjoyable environment surrounded by supportive teammates. Results from the trials were impressive with 95% of swimmers achieving at least one personal best. Furthermore, 20% of these had a clean sweep of PB’s in each event swum. These results were brilliant and we strive to continue with more achievements like these in the future. If you would like to visit our Club, please email the Club Secretary for more information and to arrange a trial, on bircotesswimclub@gmail.com

LI O NS in Bircotes & Harworth Local people need you

Can you believe that in the 21st century we still have people sleeping on the floor with no carpets, just a blanket and pillow for comfort. There are people who, through no fault of their own, cannot feed their families. There are young single mums, disowned by their families, trying to hold down a job and be a good parent despite little support.

There are people with disabilities and elderly people who have given everything for this country who now find themselves alone and socially isolated. This isn’t in some far off, third world country but right here across the district we all call our home. We don’t make a ‘song and dance’ about the support your generosity allows us to provide but believe me, it is very much appreciated by the people we help with food and the basic home comforts we all take for granted. We also support school projects that broaden the minds of our youngsters. We also support a wide variety of community groups. All of these support local people and make our community a place we are all proud to call our home.

We Need You!

Would you like to get involved with raising money to support people in need? Do you like to socialise and have some fun whilst helping others? We are 34 men and women from diverse backgrounds and ages from about 30 upwards with one thing in common – we want to make a difference by helping people and community groups across our district. We need like minded people like YOU! If you would like to get involved or if you think we may be able to help you or a community project please get in touch. Call in to Rossington Labour 5th Nov 8.30pm or Royal Oak 19th Nov 8.30pm to have an informal chat.

COMMUNITY

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association On Tuesday 1 October 2019 the group held its monthly meeting. A minute’s silence was held in memory of our dear friend Hazel Leigh, who passed away just a few days after our last meeting. A total of £461 was raised at the recent Macmillan Coffee Morning, and members were thanked for their support and help on the day. We have always been fortunate to be supported by some lovely generous local residents. At our next meeting there will be a talk from a lady from Well-being and Weight Management, which should be of interest to members, who are also invited to bring along a friend/neighbour. Members voted unanimously to donate a sum of money to an appeal to help a local young lady who is mother to two young children. She is suffering from an aggressive cancer and will be unable to carry on working throughout her treatment, so a fund has been set up to help her. On Saturday 4 January 2020 a coach party will attend the pantomime in Retford. Those who have put their names down need to pay a £5 deposit, or let us know if they cannot attend so

12

that the seats can be offered to others on our reserve list. Members were also informed about two pantomimes which will be held in the Town Hall, Harworth/Bircotes. Aladdin will be on Sunday 8 December (24pm), as part of the big weekend Christmas lights event, when there will also be a carousel in the car park. Santa’s Grotto will once again be inside the Town Hall for the little ones. A further pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, will be held on Monday evening 16 December, (7-9pm) The Christmas lunch at Styrrup Hall Golf Club promises to be another successful event, with even more people wishing to attend this year. A £5 non returnable deposit is required to secure a place, and menu choices completed as soon as possible. There was a lengthy discussion about planning applications, and, in particular, the proposal for housing developments on Tickhill Road, opposite the sewage works. The main concern is the lack of improvement to the drains and sewage system, which has long been under pressure, as new developments are joined into an outdated system, which is no longer robust enough to sustain the current population, and as these new developments are built, it is putting further strain on the infrastructure. A strong letter is to be sent

to Severn Trent and copied to Bassetlaw District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council. The application for this development will be heard in Retford Town Hall on Wednesday 9 October, and it is understood Councillor June Evans will be speaking in strong terms against this proposal. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 5 November, starting at 10.30 am. Our meetings are friendly and informative; refreshments are provided, and a raffle usually takes place. All are welcome to attend.

Dear friends

T

This is how I explain Halloween to children: I say ‘Before there was Christmas trees and sparkly snow scenes and surprise presents’ - ‘There was a baby in a stable.’ (I say the words very slowly and clearly and place a bauble, a snowflake, a brightly wrapped box and a nativity scene slowly and deliberately on the table before them, giving them space to make the connection.) Then I say ‘Before pumpkins and dressing up and tricks and treats’ and place a pumpkin, mask and Halloween mega bucket of sweets on the table. ‘There was a time of remembering…..’ And this is true. Halloween – All Hallows E’en (Eve.) All Hallows? Yes, you have heard the word before, elsewhere. It is part of the prayer that Jesus taught his followers, which we know as the Lord’s Prayer or the Our Father… ‘Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name’ – blessed be thy name. All Hallows, a blessed time. For this is the time in the churches year when we remember the dead; the saints and martyrs and all the faithful departed. The inhabitants of heaven. The blessed ones. In all our local churches there will be times throughout this season when we remember our dear departed loved ones and also those who gave their lives for the greater good in the two world wars and in other conflicts since. You would be warmly welcomed if you would care to join us. It is a time for remembering… Because this is a holy season it is important that we mark and celebrate it. We must attend to our internal spiritual life. We must make time for remembrance and thanksgiving and those echoes of grief that never leaves us. For to acknowledge these bittersweet times is part of what it is that makes us human. In the quiet, the stillness, the darkness, at the end and the new beginning it is good to say some prayers, to light a candle, to thank God for all his mercies (and share the trick or treat mega bucket of jelly bats, chocolate eyeballs etc.) May God bless you and keep you.

Hello from Mayflower Hope everyone is getting ready for Halloween and bonfire night please remember your furry friends need to be kept inside with the radio on to mask the noise. It can be a destressing time for all animals so please be aware of this. I can’t believe it is getting so close to Christmas, we have 2 street collections in Doncaster during November / December the first is 30th November and the next one is the 21st December, so look out for us, we will be outside M & S, so please come along and say hello, we love to hear your stories. One of our volunteers arranged a very successful fund raiser last Christmas this was Santa Paws on Bawtry’s open night, this event will take place again this year and we hope everyone will attend this event again with their pooches. The Sanctuary is full to overflowing as usual, however we have been really busy month rehoming the most beautiful dogs & cats that have come to us for many reasons. Many thanks to everyone that has supported us throughout the last year. If you require advice or help with rehoming please call us 01302 711330.

Daisy and her buddy, Mollie, came into our care as their previous owner was moving and her partner was allergic. She has taken a while to settle in but is now gaining confidence and beginning to blossom. Daisy is by far the confident of the pair and can usually be found at the front of the pen ‘shouting’ to anyone who will listen.

Margaret Godley

Although Daisy and Mollie came from the same home, they aren’t really best buddies, Therefore, although a home together would be purrrrfect, they can be rehomed seperately should the right home come along. Daisy would be better rehomed as a single cat if not homed with Mollie.

Harworth Office

Make a Property Trust Will How do they work?

For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor.

All for

£300 inc VAT*

We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse/partner a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse/partner need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/partner remarry or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. Jones & Co is probably the best known firm of local Solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years. The Parish of Harworth and Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley

T

(All Saints’ Church, Church Walk, ‘old’ Harworth)

So we pass into the great season of remembering, known in the life of the Church as Kingdom Season – it happens throughout November and is itself a preparation for the great season of Preparation for Christmas, Advent, which this year, rather unusually, begins on Sunday 1 December! During Kingdom season, the clocks go back so we remember the warmth and brightness of summer and maybe we even treat this season as an opportunity to commemorate(?) the death of Guido Fawkes through bonfires and fireworks. We then remember our loved ones who have died during the feasts of All Souls and All Saints’ (please come to our special service on Sunday 3 November at 3pm). In the second week of the month, we remember the dead, maimed and traumatised of conflicts past and present. Right at the end of the month, the Church celebrates what is nowadays a little known feast called ‘Christ the King’. It remind us, just before things really start to hot up for Christmas, that even when we doubt God, we are, as Jesus once told someone, “not far from God’s Kingdom”. But the fact is that remembering is a constant activity in our lives; the more responsibilities we have, the more we have to remember. Personally, I’m always involved – to some extent – in at least twenty individual tasks or projects; so over the years, have trained myself to think, just as I’m preparing to leave home or wherever I am, whether I need to remember something to take with me.

What I am always reminded in the face of my own occasional workload-induced forgetfulness, is that it is just as important to be remembered by God, who loves me with a passion, and who created and now guards my human blueprint in the birth, teaching, death, resurrection and ascension to Heaven of Jesus, who is God with us – ‘Emmanuel’. But God doesn’t just love Vicars, you know! If only you knew his love for you, too. What a gift.

With love from Nicky the Vicar We gather for worship at 10am on Thursdays and Sundays. Dogs are always warmly welcomed, as are all ages of human being! Those living with dementia and memory difficulties, plus SEND children, are especially cared for, and helped to engage in the life of the Church if this is what they want. We are not a private club and you are welcome.

~ Different Families, Same Love ~ For up to date event information and advice on how to make a baptism or wedding booking, find us on Facebook at ‘All Saints Church, Harworth and Bircotes’ or search for us at Church of England web portal, www.achurchnearyou.com Nicky the Vicar 07734 233742 To enquire about hiring our Church Hall on Main Street, please ‘phone the Caretaker, Steve Ellis, on 01302 745439.

Remembering and the power to remember, is also something we take for granted. It is no wonder, then, that when memory difficulties strike, they can be life changing and scary. Even the fear of this happening to us or a loved one can bring on great anxiety so it’s important that we seek prompt medical support.

TO CONTACT NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE DIAL 101 for Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 For a more detailed list of crimes and incidents, members of public can look on www. police.uk website which will enable members of public to filter down to street/area level you want to look at for detailed list of incidents/crimes in that particular street or area. The easiest way to search is to put in any postcode for Harworth/ Bircotes in the main page where it should then come up with a page listed Harworth with a crime map of Harworth & Bircotes, and the number of incidents reported in a month (usually 2 months behind). You can then click on the interactive crime map which you are able to zoom down to street level where incidents that have been reported are plotted on the map. You can then click on the circle of any incident where it will then show you the type of incident, current status of the crime/incident if under investigation or finalised. REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY Objecting to Planning Applications When considering any planning application, everyone, including District Councils, have to work within the framework of policies known as the National Planning Policy Framework (N.P.P.F.) Because of government changes to these policies, this framework has become more restrictive, especially when it comes to refusing planning permission where specific policies apply. This was the case in October when, despite objections from the Town Council, Tickhill Council, Harworth Group, Harworth First and many local people, planning permission was granted by Bassetlaw Planning Committee to Barratts second submission for 19/00876/OUT - to build 650 houses, on land south of

The Pilgrims Gallery at Bassetlaw Museum, Retford, is Now Open. This is part of a £75,000 National Lottery-funded project commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage to America. The Gallery has two sections: one is a reproduction of a 17th century study, such as the one William Brewster used at Scrooby Manor. The other section is a contemporary exhibition space, where you can look through a mirror at William telling stories of his life; there is also a ‘story chair` for visitors to sit and listen to characters who lived during that period in history. The Gallery is well worth a visit, it is open Mon. to Sat. – 10am to 5pm. Plus, there is a dance performance at Retford Town Hall on 26th Nov. telling the stories of passengers who sailed on the Mayflower to America in 1620: visit www. imaginationmuseum.co.uk to find out more. I thoroughly enjoyed the Fashion Show and I got a few new items for my wardrobe. The Craft Market was a resounding success – I brought home coasters, cushion covers, a handbag and jars of excellent beetroot chutney, along with a jar of piccalilli that tastes just the same as my grandmother

used to make. I was able to buy a number of Christmas stocking fillers, too.

AND

The Town Council has organised more events for local people: Craft Markets: November 3rd and December 7th in the Town Hall. There are a good number of handcrafted items available and entry is free. The Craft Markets are open to the public from 10am – 3pm, so why not come and get that special Christmas gift or simply something handcrafted for the home? December Christmas lights weekend 6th – 8th. 6th December is the switch on and this year we are going with a traditional theme: we will be holding a carol service around the Christmas tree conducted by our local vicar Rev. Nicky Skipworth, supported by the Salvation Army Brass Band. There will be a carousel ride and, of course, the stalls where local community groups are able to sell their items to create much needed funds for themselves. 7th December is the Craft Market, your last opportunity to visit this craft market and purchase some exceptionally unique gifts, decorations or household items. 8th December is the Panto – oh no, it isn’t, oh yes it is come and enjoy an afternoon of FREE entertainment from

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - NOVEMBER 2019 TaleGate Theatre who will be performing Alladin, show starts at 2pm prompt and seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so get to the Town Hall before 1:45pm as doors will close shortly after. In the evening of the 8th starting at 6:30pm, there is also a performance from Harworth Brass Band (organised by All Saints Church) Monday 16th Dec. Here we go again, with yet another Panto - this time it’s an evening performance starting at 6pm. The Dream Team Theatre company will be performing Beauty and the Beast in the Town Hall, again seats will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served` basis. 21st December – working with All Saints Church the Town Council have organised a FREE children’s party starting at 3pm – 5pm; there will be entertainment, food and lots of fun, and if we are lucky maybe a visit from Santa if he can fit us in. (Can I cope with all this excitement!?)

To Make You Smile

I was intrigued to learn that the Chief of the Wampanoag, the Native American people who live in Massachusetts and who encountered the Pilgrim Fathers when they landed in America, is hoping to visit Bassetlaw in the

30

future. Even more intriguing, he wants to bring a traditional ‘Wetu` with him. Now, I have seen my fair share of Western films over the years, and I always believed that in the past all Native American people lived in tepees. Not so – they had to use whatever resources were available to them in the specific environment where they lived. Closer inspection of the ‘Wetu` shows it is a domed construction, which to me looks similar to an igloo – only it is made of wood and has no entrance tunnel on the front! You live and learn, folks.
