Welcome to the

June 2019 edition

Today

“You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it” Allen Klein June already and the summer months are upon us. Exam season is in full swing and you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor event to go to most weekends. You will find details of many such events on these pages. Following the success of our Jess Glynne and Rita Ora ticket giveaways, this month we have a pair of tickets for Madness performing after racing at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. Look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. I thought it was about time I updated my photo here in the magazine – people have been starting to notice that the previous image taken quite a few years ago was just a little out of date! Thank you very much to Di Fisher at The Photo Den for offering everyone present at a recent networking meeting the opportunity to have a new headshot taken. Di is an experienced Business Photographer, who also offers Photo Walks, Workshops and social events for those keen to improve their photography skills. Visit www.photoden.biz to find out more. The July issue will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th June. Don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Harworth Colliery Football Club June Update! Hello and welcome to all at what is now the end of the Football season, all the matches are now complete and everyone is already looking forward to the next campaign. At the time of writing we have just lost our 1st team Management, Craig Spink, Adam Valente and Mark Birch who all leave us to take over at Frickley Athletic, they all go with our best wishes after coming in February they have worked their behinds off to try and keep ourt NCEL status but this wasn’t be, we may yet still get a reprieve so will wait to see the outcome of this. We of course will now be looking at where we want to take the club forward and the direction we move in. After years upon years of having stable management with Alan Needham, Mark Brogan and then Brendan Wilson we have found ourselves looking for our fourth manager in 18 months so we need to get that stability back. It’s been a difficult season no doubt about it, but its been made easier by the hard work and support of you all, we have seen huge increases in attendances and people getting behind the club whether that be in a volunteer capacity or Investment. I need to thank all the Sponsors who allow us to do what we do. It’s great that so many are local and to have Jones and Co our Ground sponsor now have premises in the Village that’s great. Lifting Support Services, Bradley Botterill at Farmhouse Choice, Transdek, Clay Lane Construction, Jones Homes, Crown Conservatories, Torne Valley, the list goes on so thank you to you all. Over the first few weekends in May the Club held its Annual Presentation nights, firstly was the Juniors that had to be split over two evenings due to the growth of the section. Huge well done to Adam King, Richard Ashcroft, Sam Gandy-Noble who have all worked so hard and of course the coaches and the parents. The two main awards were Alfie Chell winning the Club Player of the Year a great achievement, and Liam White winning the Clubman of the Year, amazing for both and of course their families that should be so proud. The Seniors was the following weekend and another great evening, the 1st team Tom Brogan Player of the Year award went to Brad Wilson who has simply been excellent since coming in. All the winners are on the website so too many mention here. The last two awards

8

Scott Wilson

Callum Brooks

of the evening I feel are the two most important, firstly the Paul Gordon Club Volunteer of the Year award went to Scott Wilson and massivley deserved for all the hard work he puts in week in week out, and the Robert Needham Young Player of the Year went to 16 year Old Callum Brooks who has shone for both U21’s and Reserves and one very much for the future. Gifts were handed out too to Carol Wordsworth, Emma Butler, Ann Wilson and Elaine Thompson, all for their hard work and dedication and to Satch who gives up so much of his time through the week and working on matchdays too, he fully deserved the gift the club bought but he knows there is no such thing as a free lunch with what he was awarded, Cheers Pal. The Presentation was a difficult one following the awful news about Andrew Cleary, Cheggy to everyone at the club. He was a lad who gave everything and will be sorely missed by all. The club would like to thank all that donated and bought Raffle tickets on the night to raise money towards the Funeral costs. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the family and he will be remembered at the Club. We have to as ever look forward now to next season and see what that will bring, every year has its challenges and we approach them all with gusto, this season has been a huge learning curve but one where the club can feel proud of how it has conducted itself throughout, thank you again to everyone involved in the Club and VIVA COLLIERY All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page Many thanks

The Parish of Harworth and Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley (All Saints’ Church, Harworth) Do you know, there is so much good news coming out of All Saints’ Church! In fact, our monthly pew sheet will probably have to become a monthly magazine itself at some stage, we’ve got so much on! But, this month, I can point to two particularly special moments in our life as a church family. Because on Sunday 2nd June and Sunday 9th June, three of those who already belong to our congregation will be confirmed. Well, if you don’t know, I’m not talking about the kind of confirmation you might provide for a holiday booking, or place at a school. This kind of confirmation is one that, for many years, has been offered by the Church as a way of recognising a stage that someone has reached in their own faith journey. But Confirmation is meant to mark a threshold of faith, not a door by which a person leaves the ‘building’.

For up to date event information and advice on how to make a baptism or wedding booking, find us on Facebook at ‘All Saints Church, Harworth and Bircotes’, or call Nicky the Vicar on 07734 233742 To enquire about hiring our Church Hall on Main Street, please ‘phone the Caretaker, Steve Ellis, on 01302 745439.

For some of them, Confirmation will make them feel ready to receive the bread and wine of Communion but we do emphasise that Confirmation is not about ‘completing your journey’ to becoming a Christian – God loves and accepts all of us already (yes, including you!) but these special faith-filled moments allow us to reflect on, and celebrate our journey so far. But Confirmation is not an end in itself; it’s a passing moment in a lifetime of faith. The three

At special ceremonies on those two dates, two young people and one adult will receive what we call ‘laying on of hands’ by Bishop Paul. This will ‘confirm’ them in their faith in Jesus and be a public sign that they are now ready – as is so often the case when people are baptised very young – to make for themselves those baptismal promises perhaps once made by their godparents years ago.

‘confirmands’ as we call them have taken part in a long preparation process where they have delved into their faith and thought deeply about their whole life. You know, it is so very sad to hear how so many people of all ages have been confirmed but now have nothing to do with the life of the church. To these people I humbly ask: please come back. Come and let us help you keep those promises you made to God however long ago. We gather for worship at 10am on Thursdays and Sundays Every blessing, Nicky the Vicar

KITCHEN MAKEOVERS BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS! Now celebrating its first anniversary, Dream Doors based at Unit 4 Mill Street Shopping Centre in Armthorpe offers kitchen makeovers and redesigns at less than half the cost of a full kitchen refit. Owned and managed by husband and wife team Jerry and Emma Innesbeer, along with the Showroom Manager – Abi Sheppard, Dream Doors has gained an impeccable reputation for transforming old and tired looking kitchens by simply replacing and upgrading the constituent parts. This has proved to be a more cost-effective option compared with ripping the entire kitchen out and starting from scratch. Using the highest quality materials with ‘in vogue’ colours such as cashmere, grey and copper, kitchens can be metamorphosed into stunning and contemporary designs. Cupboards, drawer fronts, worktops, taps, floor tiles and appliances can all be exchanged and even moved to create bespoke kitchens to suit individual tastes and preferences. Quartz overlays are very much sought after nowadays, proving to be a very practical and money saving option. “The kitchen is probably the most important room in the whole house” said Jerry. “At Dream Doors we can install a fresh new kitchen within 48 hours, replacing the doors and worksurfaces for a fraction of the cost of a full re-fit. Kitchen makeovers are popular all over the UK and I’m delighted to say that our modern and welcoming Armthorpe showroom has become a flagship one for the Dream Doors franchise. A ‘Checkatrade’ rating of 9.81 from 32 reviews certainly reinforces our high standing”. Jerry and Abi pride themselves on offering the highest professional

12

standards of personal service. Abi runs the showroom and undertakes the initial customer consultation, whilst Jerry project manages every job from home visit and original design to final installation. They also benefit from having the back up and support of a national organisation, which knows the industry inside out. “The interest in kitchen makeovers shows no sign of abating” said Abi. “People want lovely kitchens they can be proud of, but do not want the cost and hassle of a full re-fit. We offer a wide range of styles, as well as many appliances and white goods, so are able to offer customers a memorable kitchen from a simple door swap, to a full replacement kitchen. Our highlyexperienced fitting team can cope with any job – however big or small!” As well as kitchen makeovers, Dream Doors can also transform any bedroom to suit individual needs and requirements. COMMUNITY

Hello Everyone, I hope when everyone is reading this the sun has decided to visit us, our dogs hate the rain, and we all feel so much better when the sun shines.

LOTTIE

We are all looking forward to the Mayflower Ball and hope that we raise lots of money, as well as having an amazing time with everyone that bought tickets to join us on the evening. We now have an appeal for a beautiful little dog that I have been helping to take care of. She is so sweet and only hope that the surgery planned is able to go ahead and is successful. If you can help by donating even a small amount that would be amazing. We need a phenomenal amount of money to help her. Please read on. Lottie’s Appeal. Soon after arriving with us, Lottie’s carers noticed large growths inside both of her ears. During further investigations by the vets, they could see that the growths are completely blocking her ear canals, leaving her in great pain and unable to hear.

Blue Male 10 Mths May 2019 Possibly Possibly Older

Blue has had to come into Mayflower’s care as his owner was allergic to him and he was making her asthma worse. He is new in and finding life a little hard at the moment. As a previous housecat its very scary here with all the new smells and sounds but, given time, he will soon come round. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. Although he has been a housecat so far he is young enough possibly enjoy exploring a secure garden in his new home. He hasn’t lived with another cat but initial introductions have been positive so fingers crossed that he will find a feline friend to get up to mischief with ! He hasn’t met any dogs so we are unsure how he will react. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.

We will never know how long she has been suffering like this, but we do know that with your support we will do our very best to make sure it won’t be for much longer. Lottie has already started on much needed pain relief to help her feel more comfortable and she is travelling to see a specialist. The operation alone to remove the growths has been quoted at around £4,500 and that’s not including the consultations fees or any medication that may be needed. Purse strings are already stretched near to breaking but we can’t let this lovely girl suffer like this. Please support us as we get her out of pain and let her hear, maybe for the first time. If you would like to help towards Lottie’s operation you can do so by one of the following options. Cash or a cheque can be handed into reception, a cheque in the post to Narrow Lane, Bawtry, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN10 6QJ or donations can be sent by PayPal info@mayflowersanctuary.co.uk Please make a note with donations to Lottie Appeal. Even a small amount would make such a difference towards Lottie’s care. Many thanks for reading this. We will look forward to seeing you soon. Best Wishes

Murphy Male 12 Years Jan 2019 Possibly Possibly Older

Hunter has come into our care as his previous owner was moving and unable to take him with her. He has lived in a flat since he was a kitten and at 12 years old we feel that he is too old now to adjust to going outside. Therefore he must remain safely indoors in his new home. Hunter found life here very difficult at first and hid under his blanket for days. Gradually, as his confidence grew, he started to creep out to see what was going on. He is now confident enough to sit on his scratchpost watching the world go by although he can still be spooked easily. Once he gets to know you, he’s a fussy little chap and can be quite vocal around dinner time. All he needs is time and patience and this little chap will blossom. He would prefer his new home to be indoors and quiet with patient owners who will allow him to settle without pressure. He has previously lived with another cat but hasn’t been confident enough to make any feline friends yet. Please don’t pass him by – stop and get to know him.

Are you taking on a Commercial Lease? If you’re thinking of becoming a commercial property tenant it is vital to understand what you are taking on. Signing up to a commercial lease is very different from renting residential property, with a range of responsibilities that can come as a big surprise if you’re not prepared. Here are some questions that every prospective commercial tenant should ask before agreeing to any tenancy: 1. What am I actually leasing? Is it an ‘eggshell’ lease/whole of property/surrounding land? This is relevant to repair obligations too. 2. What have I agreed to ‘keep in repair’? In a lease, ‘keep in repair’ actually means ‘put and keep in repair’ - you could be asked to carry out works to rectify disrepair that existed even before your lease. The phrase ‘keep the property in good repair and condition’ is even more onerous - be aware of the wording. 3. Can I terminate the lease early? Break clauses can give flexibility, but take note of any conditions limiting your ability to use this. 4. Do I have security of tenure? You may have the right to renew your lease at the end of your fixed term – this can depend on the wording in

your lease and the circumstances of your occupation. A legal adviser can assist you with assessing what your position is. 5. Can I transfer the lease or sublet? Many commercial landlords allow tenants to transfer/ sublet their lease, but only with their consent and subject to certain strict conditions. This could involve you being a guarantor, and paying the landlord’s legal costs when you look to deal with your lease in this way. 6. What other payments must I make? Insurance, service charge, VAT? Do you have to pay the landlord back for the buildings insurance premium? Is the landlord charging you for any services supplied, for example for the repair of any common parts? What amount/percentage must you pay? Can the landlord incur any expenses or are there restrictions? 7. Is the rent fixed for the whole of the term? Can the landlord review the rent? If so, when and on what basis? What happens if there is a disagreement? All of this should be set out in the lease itself. Make sure you know how and when rent review kicks in, so there are no nasty surprises later down the line.

Lady of the Skies

I heard the Vulcan Bombers raw from distance, as the sound travelled in the breeze To this sad old lady of the skies, it's just an unwelcome tease Once the pride of the Royal Air Force, a deterrent to all enemy foes Now sadly, put out to pasture, as the saying goes For the crowds of people who saw her, the memories couldn't be fonder She was made for a sealing of fifty thousand feet, up in the big blue yonder From the cold war era she would emerge, a hero of the past But don't forget, Operation Black Buck, this feat was unsurpassed A daring attack on a target so far, by an aircraft we hold so dear In 1982, the Falklands War, a British island which is not so near Bombs were dropped on Port Stanley runway, to disrupt the Argentine advance The Pride of the Royal Air Force, would give our boys a chance I wish this lady was still flying, as in the air she loved To see the V bomber, strutting her stuff, way, way up above To visit this beautiful lady and emerce in the legend so proud Avro Vulcan HX558,is at Robin Hood Airport, hanger 3, take a walk around

We recently enjoyed our 3rd Annual Club Presentation Evening, celebrating our swimmers’ success and the collective success of the Club. All swimmers received recognition for their contribution to the Club over the past 12 months, and extra recognition goes to the following swimmers who received trophies in their age categories, and Coaches Special awards. It was great to see the swimmers and their families, and the Coaches and Club members all coming together for a social event, which was enjoyed by all. A great surprise for the entire Club was also received on the night in the form of £300 funding from Bassetlaw District Council Community Grant which was announced to us that evening by our guest of honour, Councillor June Evans. That was truly wonderful news and we look forward to putting these funds to good use. Thanks must also be extended to Tickhill & District Lions who assisted with the logistics of the event, and thanks also to the team of volunteers who organised the event. The Club continues to go from strength to strength: more swimmers achieving County and Regional times, more swimmers becoming very close to achieving County times, and with 3 galas and the Club time trials over the course of the next few weeks, there certainly is no time to stand still. If you are interested in competitive swimming for your child (Stage 7 upwards) so that they can improve their techniques, progress in swimming and compete at Club and County events, you can contact us at bircotesswimclub@gmail.com T

WARNING OF CALLS FROM BOGUS POLICE OFFICER AND HMRC. We are still receiving reports of bogus police officer and HMRC cold calls with a worrying trend that tricks the victim into paying money into another bank account. The HMRC cold calls often inform the person that there is an outstanding tax bill which needs paying immediately as a warrant is out for the persons arrest. A real police officer would NEVER call a member of the public asking them to disclose personal or financial information and then instruct them to take immediate financial action. This also goes for HMRC who would also never contact somebody by phone to inform somebody they owed tax or that a warrant is out for their arrest. The Police do NOT get involved with any tax owed to HMRC. If you think you’ve been targeted or want to report a fraud incident, please call Action Fraud as soon as possible on 0300 123 2040 or via Action Fraud website www.actionfraud.police.uk NEWS FROM RECENT ARRESTS/ PROSECUTIONS/COURT RESULTS OVER PAST 3 MONTHS. ANY QUERIES: CONTACT ME OR OTHER COUNCILLORS, WE WILL, AS ALWAYS, TRY TO HELP REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENTS TO THE TOWN CENTRE IN 2019. The Town Council has a number of projects planned for this year to make improvements to the Town Centre. The funding – achieved by successful bids to a number of organisations - has been earmarked for specific items, so over the next months you will see the following changes: Signposting. Finger posts will be put in place so that visitors can easily find what they are looking for. I was a bit dubious when told they were plum in colour and of a modern design, but having seen them I think you will like them. They are also in line with the other towns and link in to the signage strategy for Bassetlaw. New Litter Bins. Harworth and Bircotes has been fortunate in qualifying for funds to be used to help make our Town a tidier, more attractive place. Whilst on the shop fronts in mid-April, I glimpsed in the distance a sight seldom seen in our Town. I could see a figure dressed in a black uniform and yellow hi-vis jacket and, as I drew nearer, I realised I was looking at a Civil Enforcement Officer – or traffic warden, as I still think of them. As I stopped to have a quick word with her, a workman who had parked his vehicle on a double yellow line came hurrying towards her. At that point I thought it best to leave the scene, but I did hear the following: “Oh, no, you haven’t…” cried out the workman. Oh, yes, she had! Rough Justice I am aware that a number of people have recently suffered from a shed thief; you have my sympathy – this odious individual also targeted the shed at my mum’s house, only to find it empty. Not satisfied, he returned later to break into the garage and steal her blue mobility scooter. One outraged resident said to me “they should chop his fingers off ”. I confess I wasn’t thinking of anything as radical as removing his digits – at that particular moment it was another piece of his anatomy that had sprung to mind!

COMMUNITY

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The Annual General Meeting of the group took place on Tuesday 7 May 2019. All existing committee members were re-elected, and they were thanked for the work they had done over the past year. Annual accounts had been audited and were distributed to members. Secretary ran through the achievements over the past year. It was noted that membership had grown. Committee expressed their thanks to Town Hall staff, the police, District Councillors, and Sheila Place, Notts County Councillor, for the help and support given to the group. Seated exercise classes have begun on Tuesday afternoons in the Devonshire Road Community Centre, with an extra hour tagged

36

on to the existing Craft afternoon sessions. These sessions are very popular, and these are proving to be fun as well as beneficial. Members are looking forward to their outing to Wentworth Garden Centre on 22 May, and followed on 19 June by a trip to Liverpool. There will be a trip to Scarborough on 7 August, but the coach for Scarborough is already full and there is a reserve waiting list. The group’s Coffee Shop in the Town Hall on Thursday mornings is growing in popularity and it was decided to ask for donations on the day of the elections, and a raffle was also held, with proceeds going to Firefly Cancer charity minibuses, when £80 was raised. A further raffle will take place on following Thursdays to raise more funding to provide better presents for Santa’s Grotto, without having to charge extra. A decision was taken to purchase a further defibrillator to be mounted outside the Town Hall. This will be a total of four defibrillators purchased by the group. Serlby Park Academy will be approached to ask them if it would be possible for students to make plaques to be placed close to the defibrillators, informing the community that they have been purchased by the Tenants & Residents Group

It was noted that the monthly magazines are not always received by isolated pockets of residents. This will be raised with Paula, who produces the magazine, with a request for extras to be left at the Community Centre as well as the ones already left at the Town Hall and Library. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 6 June, starting at 10.30am at the Devonshire Road Centre. All are welcome to attend; a raffle is normally held and refreshments are available.
