Welcome to the

July 2018 edition

Don’t be afraid of change. You may lose something good, but you will gain something better. Unknown author Another school year is coming to an end, and another set of young people are heading towards a change of nursery/school/ college/apprenticeship/further education/ employment. Leaving the place that they will have hopefully been very happy for many years can be a sad time for both children and their parents but it is also a positive time when we can look forward to what is to come and the new opportunities available. Whatever change you or your loved ones may be facing over the coming months, I hope it will be a change for the better. The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th July. Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

George J Johnson There are times when exhibitions leave you amazed and in awe at the skill and ability of the artist or craftsman and the Glass show at the Harley is one of those. You have another couple of weeks to catch this exhibition and every piece of work in this group exhibition, which has been put together by the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, demonstrates what a mysterious and dextrous material glass is. Really interesting. However the Lithopane show, also at the Harley, (Dear Reader, you will perhaps remember that I mentioned this new word ‘Lithopane’ a couple of months ago) was a huge disappointment and demonstrated that it doesn’t matter how much you dress up your art-practice technology in fancy language (and the particular technology involved here was as basic as industrial ceramic printing which you will find on the mug from which you are now drinking your tea) if the artwork is no more interesting than a snap shot, then that’s it – it’s just a snap shot. I have it on several good authorities, and by the time you will read this, I too will have been, that the big summer show GUISEPPE PENONE at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is terrific. Take a picnic, make a day of it. The show is made up of birds, flowers, fish, reptiles that have gone or are on the critical list. Everything in the exhibition is made from throw away materials, to promote creative recycling and raise awareness of why species are disappearing at such an alarming rate. LIFE DRAWING: 14 July 11-1pm and 2 - 4pm ART HISTORY LECTURE: 6 July ‘ALL AT SEA’ The coastline around Britain has provided a wealth of material for artists. This lecture brings together a selection, and includes work by among others Laura Knight, Lamorna Birch and Wilson Steer. Lectures take place at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, starting at 10.30 am and lasting for an hour and a half. Each lecture 8

We reported last month that we had more swimmers achieving County times, DQG ZLWK RXU UHFHQW VWHUOLQJ H΍ RUWV DW WKH Rotherham Metro gala in May (see photo) we have even more swimmers who edge closer and closer. We hope to increase that number at our next gala taking place at Ponds Forge – by the time you read this, we will have competed at the Retford gala also at Ponds Forge, and no doubt we will have continued on our upward trajectory. The Club holds Time Trials approximately every 3 months in which all swimmers participate in sprint events and the purpose of which enables the Coaching team to monitor their progress ZLWK D YLHZ WR UHȴ QLQJ DQG IRFXVVLQJ RQ FHUWDLQ aspects for each swimmer. We recognise those swimmers who have demonstrated the most improvement each time, measured by changes in their own Personal Best times. The most improved swimmers for our May time trials were Max Vaux-Anderson (under 9s), Harry Haslam (9/10 age group), Archie King (11/12 age group) and Leon Louw (13+ age group) – Congratulations to them all!

We will be holding our 2nd Sponsored Swim imminently – this year we are raising funds partly for the Club but also for Asthma UK, as each swimmer attempts to swim as far as they can. Last year the ~40 swimmers participating collectively swam almost 90 miles. We hope to do just as well this year, if not better and we wish them well in their endeavours – as well as plenty of strength and stamina along the way. As always, a big thank you to the Coaching team, the Committee and the team of volunteers who keep the swimmers swimming and the Club running! Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - JULY 2018 The Royal Wedding May 19th What a wonderful treat for us all, watching the Royal wedding. A second treat was the event the same afternoon on the Tommy 6LPSVRQ Č´HOG 7KDQNIXOO\ ZH had wonderful weather, parents could sit and relax whilst the children played on the bouncy castle, the bouncy slide, and just run around to the music, or play on the M.U.G.A. Alan Withington did a great job showing the children how to build a bee house; needless to say, they were absolutely fascinated. Do you know that bees pollinate a third of what we eat, including some of the most important fruit and veg in our diet? I understand bees are now at risk from bee-killing pesticides called neonicotinoids; a sobering thought because without bees our ecosystem is at risk. And a further treat was the Gala afternoon on 26th May on the Recreation Ground organised by Harworth and Bircotes First Community Group. Keeping Our Children Safe The school holidays are looming, and the curious nature of children can lead them into dangerous situations. I am aware that the old school on Shrewsbury Road is an attraction to them, but it is full of hazards. Parents/grandparents, please make it clear to your children that the building is strictly ‘out of bounds` - we don’t want any broken limbs, or worse.
