“Spring is the time of year where it is Summer in the sun and Winter in the shade” Charles Dickens Officially Spring is here and looking around it would seem that nature agrees. At the time of writing it is wet and windy, but my garden is filled with the promise of the spring to come with daffodils in bloom (in fact they are past their best) and the buds of new growth everywhere. The delivery window for this magazine includes both Mother’s Day and the start of British Summer Time, lighter nights and longer days are on the way. Springtime often starts people thinking about their homes, whether it is for a traditional spring clean or more drastic changes. If you are planning home or garden improvements this Spring and Summer you will find a huge range of people to help you within the pages of this magazine. Don’t forget to tell them where you found them if you give them a call. The May issue will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th April. No doubt the May magazines will bring the start of Spring and Summer fairs and summertime events, don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you are planning an event this year. Enjoy Easter and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.

Best wishes,

SAYING GOODBYE

Dear Friends,

It is not easy to say goodbye to a job, a loved one who is passing on or has passed on or a friend / relation who is moving on. Over the past year, I had had experiences of my daughter marrying and leaving my sphere of influence and my older brother and dad passing on to eternity. By the time you may be reading this letter, I would have visited my home country, Ghana, to burry my dad and partake in his funeral. In all these experiences, the most difficult goodbye I had to say was letting my daughter go. Please, do not get me wrong – I love my brother and dad to bits. It will be their memories that I will always hold on to. Talking of memories, I wonder if I can remind you of Jesus who had to say goodbye to his friends on the eve before his death. He shared a meal with them. This is called the Passover meal. The Apostle Paul described the scene as follows: “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11: 23 – 26) Jesus said goodbye to his friends with a meal. This meal has

8

become a memorial to many Christians till this day. Jesus’ memorial has affected most of us to the extent that some of us want to know him and live like him. Again, the Apostle Paul puts it as follows: “But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ - the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ - yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3: 7 – 10). Knowing Christ involves saying goodbyes to some aspects of our lives as well. I wonder If you have people or experiences in your life that you are holding on to and may be a bother to your lifestyle or spirituality. It can be an abusive relationship or an addiction that is causing so much grief, but you still would not let it go. I wonder what your memorial will be when you pass on to eternity. For my dad, it was his modest lifestyle and respect for every human being – child or adult and rich or poor. That was the part of his life that made him want to be like Christ. He did that by having faith in God

and believing that the power of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter day could transform him into a better person; and it did.

We are in lent and gradually moving to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. I wonder, if I can appeal to you to use this season of repentance, forgiveness and newness as an opportunity to say goodbye to some attitudes and experiences, including some difficult relationships. Furthermore, I wonder if I can suggest to you to consider making a fresh start by asking Jesus to take control of your life and help change you by the power of his resurrection. The change will be gradual so do not be frustrated if it becomes a ‘two steps forward, one step back’ change. It can take a month, months or even years. However, I wonder if I can remind you that the little changes will become a great change in your life in the future. All it takes is for you to be determined to do it. You can even ask for support from the church, friends and even agencies. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Rev Dr. Frank Ok ai-Sam

Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium Diggles Lodge Lane, Ranby, Retford DN22 8QJ

You’ve potentially made the difficult decision as to whether or not you will be buried or cremated – if it’s a cremation, what should you or your family now be looking at in terms of ensuring that you select the right crematorium? If you want an experience that your loved ones will remember for all the right reasons, then you should be looking towards the new Barnby Moor Memorial Park & Crematorium. WHY? Who better to look after you than a facility that is family owned, with our directors having over 90 years collective experience in the funeral sector — as a result we’re totally committed to providing exceptional standards of service to the bereaved families that use our facilities. Our mission statement is about doing just that - clearly others think we do too, as in 2017 Memoria’s South Oxfordshire Crematorium & Memorial Park was named as ‘Best Crematorium in the UK’ at the Good Funeral Awards with our other seven sites all featuring in the top ten!

In early February, Memoria opened its newest crematorium at Barnby Moor, serving directly the communities of Doncaster, Bawtry and surrounding areas. So, what can you expect? Unlike most crematoria who offer just 40 minute or even half an hour services, as a market leader we provide as a basic service element, a full one-hour service time. This is so families are not then caught-up in a constant conveyor belt type scenario whereby they see other mourners either departing as they arrive or when they depart themselves the next funeral cortege is already in view — this in our opinion isn’t conducive to a positive experience. These 60 minutes guarantee time for the bereaved to adequately celebrate and remember their loved one, peruse floral tributes and chat with friends at their leisure without the added pressure of feeling they have to vacate the site once the service or ceremony is over.

THE AMBIANCE OF THE SITE IS FURTHER COMPLIMENTED BY: • A Service Chapel with a capacity for over 100 seats • Dedicated clergy facilities • Extensive Memorial gardens for cremated remains • Well laid out car parking with safe access • Disabled access and hearing loop • Comfortable soft furnishings with a neutral soft colour scheme. • Choice of advanced music system or live organ • Web camera with live streaming capabilities for those friends and family who may be unable to attend • Plasma television screens for photo dedication/eulogy’s • All set in a beautiful tranquil countryside environment with stunning water features & extensive gardens. • Wesley Music system with an almost infinite music library to cater for all requests. • Uniquely for the area our grounds also include a dedicated section for traditional burials. Please ask your local Funeral Director for further information or if you are able please drop in for a chat, our staff will be only too pleased to show you the facilities we have on-site.

Harworth Colliery Football Club April Update! Hello and welcome to what will be a very pivotal month in the future of this Football Club. April will see

us play our remaining fixtures and although at the time of writing we are in a precarious position, we are hopeful with plenty of belief and the backing of all of you, that we can remain in this League In Mid february we changed our management as we felt we had to do something to try and change our fortunes, this decision wasn’t taken lightly and we have brought in Craig Spink as Manager and Adam Valente as Asst along with former Doncaster Rovers player Matty Cauldwell as Physio and Goalkeeping coach Mark Birch Craig joins us as a very expereinced coach, and UEFA B Licenced, he has coached previously at Worksop Town and Frickley Athletic. It helps also that Craig is local to us from Worksop and has brought in a number of good quality players that have all played at an higher level, we have seen a number of players leave which is always difficult but that has been their choice so in effect it’s a new side and with no Pre-season to work with must hit the ground running. We lost our first two games under Craig but then beat Glasshoughton, over those three games we have seen an average of 180 through the gate and we average the 5th highest in the league which is an amazing acheivement

10

so thank you and to all those that work so hard on matchdays. April sees us play 6 games with three at home and three away, two of those Away games against local rivals Armthorpe on the 3rd KO 7:45 and Rossington on the 20th. Huge huge games for us so if you can make the short trip please do so, the lads I know massively appreciate the support. Our home games are Dronfield Town 6th, Ollerton Town 13th and AFC Emley on the 27th our last game, all 15:00 Kick offs, so if you can support the Team and the Club do so WE NEED YOU. As well as on the field there has ever been plenty happening off the Field, Kevin Mcdonald of Bawtry Farms and Torne Valley was able to come down for a picture with their new banners, Kevin has kindly assisted with the fundraising for the new LED Floodlights and we are eternally grateful. Also we are proud to have been able to honour Peter Lawrance naming the Changing Rooms and 3G Facility after him, pictured with the plaque are three generations from the family, Ben Grandchild, Mark,Son and brother Barry. Pete was Club President for a number of years and his legacy will live on through the work that he did. Our reserves have had a good month reaching the semi final of the League cup which will be played in April on the 6th away to Crowle Colts. Crowle currently sit top of the table so will be a tough ask but one that

Bren and all the players will relish. The Ladies have their League Cup final on the 28th of April away to Worksop Town at Dronfield Towns ground so hope to have plenty turning out. On March 9th our U11 Girls won their Mini shield Final 4-2 beating Crosspool in horrendous conditions at Shelley FC Finals day, such a proud day for all concerned so well done. Pictured are all the parents players and Supporters that travelled through, the day will live long in the memory. Staying with the Juniors our U11 boys picked up their league winners medals at the Keepmoat and they are pictured as Mascots for the day at a recent 1st team game, well done to Adam, Shaun, Lee and all the players and parents, great acheivement and occasion. Our U15’s also have their semi final on the 31st March V Scawthorpe Scorpions at Thorne Colliery, good luck to Paul, Wayne and all the lads. So again, last call to arms to get people up and through the gates, the challenge is there for us all, as one we will over come anything. All the upto date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @ HCIFC or on our Facebook page Many thanks

Entitled ‘Dealing with the Past: Coal, Community and Change (1965-2015)’ will be coming to Harworth & Bircotes Town Hall during May of this year. The coal industry has a long and proud association with the arts and this travelling exhibition aims to deal with the contested memories of coalmining in the region over a fifty-year period – both with the 1984-85 strike and the end of coal mining more generally – through iconic photographs and images. It is an important topic as the East Midlands region was a particular focus of the strike in 198485 and these histories have not been forgotten with some long-term resentment continuing to the present day. Monty Male 8 Years Feb 2019 Possibly No Older

Monty’s owner moved and cruelly left him behind to fend for himself on the streets. Luckily a neighbour recognised him scavenging for a meal in the bins and took him in. She has been taking care of him for a while now but unfortunately has to move and isn’t able to take him with her. Not wanting to leave him behind to a uncertain future, she contacted Mayflower for help. So here he is looking for a new home. Monty is an independent little chap who is very fussy but likes it to be on his own terms. He is happy to come to you for fusses but doesn’t like to be picked up or cuddled. As a former stray he has obviously been outside so would probably be happiest with a secure garden to explore away from busy roads for his safety. We are unsure how he will react to dogs but he certainly wont appreciate living with another cat I’m afraid. Don’t pass him by, call him and I’m sure he will come running out to greet you.

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

BOOTS & BOLOS T Spring is a good time of year to start new hobbies, with longer days and (hopefully) some better weather. One way of putting spring in your step is to ‘keep on dancing’. Several newspaper articles over the past few months have pointed out the health benefits of line dancing by exercising, using your brain and making new friends. Boots & Bolos line dancing classes have been in and around Oldcotes for over 20 years. Unfortunately, we don’t have any classes for brand new beginners at the moment, but we have three classes that might suit you if you’ve danced before and/or want to add another dancing class to your repertoire. Our Wednesday afternoon class started about 6 months ago (1 – 3 p.m. at Oldcotes Village Hall). Our Thursday afternoon class started about 18 months ago (1.30 – 3.30 p.m. at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall, Maltby). Our Thursday evening class is the longest running and started just over 5 years ago (Thursdays 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. Oldcotes Village Hall) and is suitable for intermediate dancers. All of our classes cost £3.50 and include a free tea/coffee break half way through. Boots & Bolos also hold monthly line dance Social evenings on the first Saturday of every month, at Oldcotes Village Hall, 7.30 – 10.45 p.m. The next Social Evening is Saturday 6th April. Non-stop dancing with over 50 line dances and 2 partner dances throughout the night. We play a wide range of dances with request forms on all tables so you can put your requests in for your favourite dances! For any more information/details of classes, etc., ring me on 07808 931534

Another month has gone by and the racing season has well and truly started for Bircotes Swimming club. At the start of the month, we took a few teams to the County Relay races, where the best swimming clubs from the whole of the Nottinghamshire area compete against each other. This is a team event rather than individual races, and it was great to see how our swimmers worked well together and were totally inclusive of all swimmers, young and old. All children had a fantastic day. As our club is quite small, a lot of our swimmers had to compete in races for swimmers 2 or 3 years older than their actual age. Despite that, they made us very proud. We didn’t come home with any medals this year but have shown we are worthy of a place in the competition. Only 2 weeks after the County relays we took part in the Doncaster Dartes gala at Adwick. It was the first time in the history of our club that we paid a visit to our neighbouring town. We were made to feel very welcome and it was a great meet. A total of 17 of our swimmers took part in this competition and the results were amazing. Lots of personal bests and speeding tickets were achieved, which is great this early on in the racing year, one of our swimmers, Elin finished 4th out of 25 in her age catego-

ry, another, Abi finished 5th out of 33 in her age group and William finished 8th out of 21 in his. Our swimmers are well and truly placing Bircotes Swimming Club on the swimming map. By the time this goes to print we will have held our 3rd Club Championships, which is closely followed by a swimming gala at Mansfield, so no time to rest here! Early in May our swimmers will be able to celebrate their fabulous achievements at our annual presentation night, which is always a great night with plenty of food, music and laughter. We can’t wait for that one! At the annual presentation night, there is a raffle which raises money for the club. We have some very special prizes lined up already, but if any local companies would be willing to sponsor a prize, please contact Mieke on bircotesswimclubchairperson@gmail. com We would be very grateful. Many thanks. T

COMMUNITY

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association The group’s meeting took place on Tuesday 5 March 2019, and was well attended. A talk was given by Angie Dainty of Barnsley Premier Leisure, who run the leisure centres in Worksop, Retford and Bircotes. Her role is to identify older people in the community who would benefit from exercise to help keep them mobile. She is trying to sort out classes to fit in with as many as possible. She has also visited Age Concern and other groups in our community. One suggestion would be Thursday afternoon. It is also proposed to have seated exercise at Devonshire Road Community Centre on Tuesday afternoons at 1pm, just before the start of Craft afternoon. These sessions would have to be paid for as it would mean having a freelance instructor, which Angie would arrange. She also spoke about classes at Bircotes Leisure Centre but suggested that those with heart problems, angina etc should consult with their doctor and ask for GPO referral to these sessions, which would mean a reduced cost. BPL are currently training up an instructor to work with those with coronary issues etc. Members thanked Angie for an informative talk.

It is hoped to hold a market on the Civic Square (outdoor Events area), sometime around Easter, or maybe a little later. If successful it will become a regular event. Residents will be consulted during the market in order to find out what other stalls would be popular. It was stressed that these will not be competing with existing businesses – for instance a haberdashery stall, bakery stall, shoes etc. On Tuesday afternoons 2, 9 and 16 April, community litter picks will take place around the Snipe Park area. Another fashion show will be held in the Town Hall on 1 June. There are to be three craft fairs in the Town Hall in October, November and December, but these will be strictly craft fairs. The Christmas Lighting event will be held a little later this year during the weekend of 6/7 December, and will not clash with either Bawtry or Tickhill. There will be a pantomime, and a carol service around the Christmas tree, and a further pantomime on the 16 December.

Trips out for the forthcoming year were discussed and suggestions included Wentworth Woodhouse, Liverpool, Scarborough and Carlton Park, Rotherham. Dates will be given shortly.

Work will commence shortly to clear the second bund. This will be grassed with a paved walkway to provide a much-needed link from the housing on the old pit site through to the shops and doctors’ surgeries. It is hoped this will be completed mid-summer.

A Town Councillor gave information about upcoming events.

A work programme has been set up for the

26

residents of the old Avondale Nursing Home, to give them the opportunity to become involved in community work, alongside Alan, who is working on Snipe Park Woods. Alan has experience of working with ex-offenders, and those involved in the scheme have expressed a desire to turn their lives around. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 2 April, starting at 10.30 am. This meeting should have been the Annual General Meeting, but due to holidays it has been decided to hold the AGM on 7 May instead. All residents are welcome to come along to these meetings. Refreshments are provided and a raffle is usually held. OPEN BETWEEN

IN THE GARDEN

Open Your Garden This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens. Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too.

28

It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons. You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best. And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Happy gardening.

Did you know that in Bassetlaw we have more people diagnosed with cancer than the England average? People in Bassetlaw are less likely to attend for screening, more likely to be diagnosed with cancer at a late stage and, as a consequence, are more likely to die from cancer. Here at Aurora we are aiming to raise awareness within the local community of these statistics and what we can do to improve them. We have held workshops, manned stalls at local supermarkets and given out leaflets at sports events. We have been able to gain access to the larger companies in Bassetlaw such as B & Q and Wilko’s to name but a few and given talks at local schools and academies, Women’s Institutes, Rotary Clubs and U3A groups. If you would like know more about this campaign or about Aurora in general then please contact the Aurora Wellbeing Centre on 01909

Tickhill & District Lions Like to get involved with Lions? We need male & female members!

The residents of Bawtry, Bircotes, Harworth, Loversall, Rossington, Tickhill and Wadworth are very generous when we ask for donations to help support good causes but have you ever thought about joining the Lions? What’s stopping you?

Who we are:

We are a group of 29 men and women from a wide range of backgrounds with a spread of ages from 30s to retirees, who want to increase our numbers across the entire district.

How we operate:

We are separated into two sections, Welfare Committee “those who spend money,” meet fortnightly (in a private room in a pub) to discuss and where necessary decide how to investigate requests for help. If we decide to help we will then put our proposal to the entire club the following week when we meet for the Business Meeting at Tickhill Cricket Club. All members then vote on these proposals. Activities Committee “those who raise money,” meet fortnightly (in a different pub to the Welfare Committee) to discuss fund raising activities, these would include annual events such as the Santa Float and Firework Extravaganza, but there

are many other events and organisations that we support throughout the year with activities such as Race Nights, Casino Nights and disabled sports days and outings. All events are then discussed and agreed at the Business Meeting the following week.

What to do next:

Contact any Lion to arrange an informal meeting with two of our Membership Committee to see if we like you and most of all you like us. You would then be invited to attend three meetings, a Welfare Committee Meeting, an Activities Meeting and a Business Meeting. It would then be time for you and us to decide whether to proceed. It’s as simple as that.

Being a member:

It is hoped that all members will attend every week, but we are realistic and understand that every member freely gives of their time whenever they can, not just to attend our meetings but also to help at the events arranged by the Activities Committee. So, yes, joining the Lions is a commitment but we are a social group who enjoy each other’s company whilst helping others.

PS. And have fun doing it!

l fe beer s ti va

TO CONTACT NOTTINGHAMSHIRE POLICE DIAL 101 for Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 For a more detailed list of crimes and incidents, members of public can look on www. police.uk website which will enable members of public to filter down to street/area level you want to look at for detailed list of incidents/crimes in that particular street or area. The easiest way to search is to put in any postcode for Harworth/ Bircotes in the main page where it should then come up with a page listed Harworth with a crime map of Harworth & Bircotes, and the number of incidents reported in a month (usually 2 months behind). You can then click on the interactive crime map which you are able to zoom down to street level where incidents that have been reported are plotted on the map. You can then click on the circle of any incident where it will then show you the type of incident, current status of the crime/incident if under investigation or finalised. POLICE WARN PUBLIC OVER RECENT ONLINE SCAMS :TENANCY DEPOSIT SCHEME ALERT

Action Fraud have received several reports where fraudsters are claiming to be landlords of properties offered for rent online. Prior to a viewing the suspect requests that the individuals pay a deposit and sometimes a month’s rent upfront, claiming that this money will be put into the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, and is therefore protected under government legislation. After the individual pays the money, the suspect sends a bogus email purporting to be from the Tenancy Deposit Scheme confirming they have received their deposit. However, this is not the case as the money was sent directly to an account associated with the suspect and the victim is left out of pocket and without the home they had thought to be putting a deposit on. What You Need To Do • Always make sure you, or a reliable contact, has viewed the property with an agent or landlord before agreeing to rent a property. • Don’t be rushed or pressured into

Government Initiative help Serlby Park Academy to Plant Trees! T The Serlby Park Academy based in Harworth has planted 233 trees thanks to a national tree planting project funded by Defra. The Greenwood Community Forest, one of 12 Community forest initiatives in England, helped the school to plan a planting scheme including hedgerows and a small woodland which will be used as an area for outdoor learning. Over 200 children from Years 2 to 5 were involved in planting a variety of native trees including hawthorn, field maple, holly, birch, rowan, crab apple and oak, which as they grow will be great for wildlife as well as school children. The Greenwood Team made the whole process easy by giving advice as well as planning the planting scheme, providing tools and materials and leading the planting event. There is also advice on long-term care of the trees which is really helpful.

BAWTRY PHOENIX THEATRE

Following the planting day the Greenwood Team will revisit the school to provide an education workshop with pupils based on the importance of trees to our urban areas.

Gillian Fotheringham, Head of Academy, said: “Being on a new build site means that we have few trees around our Primary site. The result of being part of the Trees for Learning project with the Greenwood Team is that we will be able to improve our outdoor learning areas dramatically. We look forward to learning about the wildlife who will make our trees their home and enjoy the shade and tranquillity that the trees will one day provide. To know that our children will have planted them and will be able to watch them grow is an extra special added bonus!" Nic Wort, Land Management Officer for Greenwood, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with the school. The whole process from planning through to planting has been a great experience. It is so important to connect children with the nature around them and this experience has really involved them in helping to improve their school grounds for future learning and the wider environment.”

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2019 Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine, and you can access the Council website and the Council Facebook page. Any queries: contact me or other councillors, we will, as always, try to help REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OF COMMON LANE HOUSING SITE I am pleased about the news confirming plans to develop the vacant housing site on Common Lane. Residents were able to comment on the proposals on 20th March at the Church Room, Old Harworth, where the plans were on display for public consultation from 2.30pm to 7pm. The intention is to build a mixture of both bungalows and houses; work should start later this year, subject to planning permission being granted. N.B. A copy of the plans can be seen at the Town Hall. (Apologies for the late notice; we received the information from the developer after the March edition of the magazine had gone to print) A VISIT FROM SHEFFIELD CITY REGION (S.C.R.) On February 19th a representative of Sheffield City Region came to Harworth and Bircotes. She had heard about the developments here, and wanted to see for herself what had been achieved. This was

38

an opportunity to present the bigger picture for the future, show her all the different plans for regeneration of the Town Centre - such as improved roads, links with Simpson Park, new retail outlets and other facilities. She certainly found the tour of Harworth and Bircotes interesting, and it helped that the Town Council/Bassetlaw District Council had previously done the background work and could show the individual plans and designs already completed. She was definitely a bright lady; she immediately saw how the different plans/projects interlinked with each other, and suggested that they all needed to be incorporated into one Master Plan. Oh, Happy Day! A Result - Here Comes the Master Plan, Folks. We have now had confirmation that Sheffield City Region will pay for the work involved in putting all the separate plans together in one Master Plan for the Development of the Town Centre. This entails a lot of work and expertise, it will no doubt result in a very comprehensive document, but a Master Plan is exactly what planners and investors understand when it comes to Town Planning. Why do this? Hopefully, this strategic document will attract long-term funding to deliver a Town Centre fit for the future, starting with Scrooby Road! WHAT ABOUT NORTH NOTTS. BORDER SCHOOL? The Direction 4 Order against

demolition remains in place, but in the meantime background work is ongoing in response to the results of the public survey, which suggested the favoured future uses for the school were: 1. Accommodation for those aged over 55 years 2. A building for community use, such as a Community Hub. Achieving both these outcomes would be wonderful, but requires a lot of investigation, planning and negotiation, along with a bit of imagination and good luck - not to mention that old chestnut, money, but it is a large site worthy of investment ….in the meantime, behind the scenes, the work goes on, and the Town Council and Bassetlaw District Council are working closely with Homes England about possible accommodation for older people. AND THERE’S MORE GOOD NEWS: ABOUT NORTH NOTTS. BORDER SCHOOL Homes England have agreed to fund exploratory work, which will lead to recommendations on the option to build/not build accommodation for older people on the site. Comment: it is encouraging when we get interest in the future of this community from major funding organisations; it is also frustrating that every step we take on this long, complicated journey of improvement is met by the challenge of limited available cash. As a Town Council, we

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - APRIL 2019 go to extraordinary lengths to attract (regardless of political background) Government interest, commitment and money from the various authorities - no mean feat in the face of competition from many other local authority bodies at a time of economic austerity. I do know that if I was to provide the money for the work needed to improve the road infrastructure, Highways would then be able to quickly carry out the work; sadly, I don’t have any spare millions to do this, at least not unless I win the Lottery! REQUESTS FROM THE COMMUNITY One request from caring grandparents concerns the lack of railings outside All Saints Church School on Scrooby Road; their worry is that children could dash from the school grounds onto the road. A second request, again from a grandparent, was for a pedestrian crossing to be placed opposite the Sports and Social Club, again on Scrooby Road. The grandparent felt that as more children are attracted by the great sporting activities at the club, a pedestrian crossing would greatly serve the safety of our children. The Town Council has referred both these requests to Highways at Notts. County, and also asked County Councillor Sheila Place to give her support. FINED FOR LITTERING Two Bassetlaw residents were recently fined almost £600 each for throwing litter from their vehicles. The fact is, it doesn’t matter how small the litter is - if you do it, and a witness reports it, you will be fined. In this instance, both cases went to court, which could have been

avoided, and the fine would have then been £100. One other point: if it cannot be proved who was driving the vehicle at the time, then the owner will incur the fine – so be careful who you allow to drive it. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Next time you are held up in slow-moving town traffic, remember there are an extra 2.5m vehicles on the road, partly due to the increasing use of home deliveries for fast food, supermarket goods, and parcel delivery companies. Will this knowledge help me when stuck in traffic? I doubt it, I will still tut and grumble, just like everyone else! COMMUNITY LITTER PICKS Bassetlaw District Council is supporting a series of community litter picks across Bassetlaw, and is inviting all interested individuals and groups in Harworth and Bircotes to join in on the following dates: Tuesdays: 2nd, 9th and 16th April, from 2pm – 4pm. Bassetlaw will provide the equipment; be sure to wear appropriate clothing. Anyone interested – please meet at Snipe Park Play Area on the above dates/times – St. Patricks School have already promised to get involved.
