The summer holidays already! August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the time too). Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. The October & November issue will be delivered to you early October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Thursday 20th September. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I will be back in October with your next magazine.

Best wishes,

Senior Snippets Tips on ageing gracefully We all know the basics of aging well - eating right, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking, but seniors can make other choices that can have an impact beyond personal health to gain an edge on aging gracefully. Here are some tips on how to age gracefully in the golden years. Take Care of Mental Health: A positive mind-set sets the stage for enacting changes that can ease the aging process. Keeping in touch regularly with family and friends is now easier than ever thanks to technology like Skype, Facetime and social media. Keeping busy is also a great way to help prevent loneliness. Consider taking an interesting course, volunteering at a local hospital or animal shelter, or joining a book club. Do brain-aerobics: The more you challenge your brain, the better it will perform. An active brain allows for sharper concentration, enhanced function

and focus, and improved problem-solving skills. Try playing brain games, learning a new language or instrument, or taking up a new hobby to keep the brain active and engaged. Sleep: It is considered best practice to try and get between 7-9 hours of sleep at night. Not getting enough sleep puts you at risk for a host of physical and mental problems. Limit Vices: Many habits people have enjoyed for years begin to catch up with them as they get older. Smoking and drinking alcohol and caffeinated beverages have dehydrating effects on the skin as well as your overall health. Now is a good time to quit smoking and limit drinking and you might also see reduced ďŹ ne lines and wrinkles. Protect your skin from the sun: Too much time in the sun can cause wrinkles, not to mention cancer. Always make sure to wear sunscreen as it can help prevent your skin’s aging. Growing older affects all parts of our bodies including hair, skin, heart, muscles, and more, but aging well may be as simple as adopting some easy everyday habits. Robert Moore, Home Instead

Spotlight English Club at Doncaster Evangelical Fellowship Doncaster Evangelical Fellowship has been a part of the Wheatley community since 1994 when we were able to purchase Wentworth Hall on Beckett Road. However, times change and we have become increasingly aware of the more diverse nationalities of the people in our community and another need. If you are at school or in the workplace it is quite easy to practise your everyday English but there are many who are at home who don’t get the chance. Hi Everyone, Well what a fantastic summer we are having at the moment, coupled with football fever it couldn’t be better. Unfortunately, there is always a down side to the hot weather for all the animals in our care, it is a struggle to keep everyone cool. For the dogs that love water we have paddling pools in their runs it is really wonderful to watch them play in the water keeping cool. However, we have been struggling to get our hand on more hard paddling pools, (this hot weather has been a bit of a surprise) we are 3 short for the dogs that love water and have had to keep swopping them around. If anyone out there has one they are not using or can get their hand on one and donate it to us that would be amazing (The hard ones, not blow up). For the dogs that are not keen on water we hose the runs to keep area’s cool, which seems to work. We have had 3 lovely dogs come to our Sanctuary recently with huge medical issues, we have managed to save their lives but at a huge cost. They all had major leg issues and one had to have an amputation, but hopefully they are now on the road to recovery and will be ready to go to their forever homes. These operations have left our funds in desperate need. If anyone would either like to donate to help cover this cost or just complete a direct debit even if it’s just £2 per month as every little helps and the Sanctuary desperately needs to cover this cost. Thank you to everyone that attended the annual dog show in Tickhill. Unfortunately, we felt the heat was too oppressive for the dogs, so be on the safe side we had to close the event early. We still raised in the region of £1500-£2000 pounds so it was still very much worthwhile. There is much planning and

preparation required for an event like this, so everyone helping on the day a big thank you. We hope everyone remembered our Summer Fare that will have now have taken place it was the 29th July and was advertised in the last issue. A big thank you to people (or fairies!) that keep leaving towels etc in my garage they are a great help to us. We have some beautiful dogs and cats here at the moment so if you are looking for that special pet to make your life complete please, please come and visit us. We also have a great shop with everything you could want for your pet. Please be double aware in these rising temperatures not to leave animals in hot cars even if the sun isn’t out a car can still become a terribly hot place. Also make sure there is plenty of shade and drinking water for all of your pets, including horses. The Sanctuary have a Job Vacancy for an experienced Kennel Carer. This is a full-time position working 8 hours a day 5 day per week including weekends on a rota basis. Experience of working with dogs and cats is essential. Applicants will not be considered without experience. Please forward your CV to Mayflower Sanctuary, Narrow Lane, Bawtry. DN106QJ or e mail us info@mayflowersanctuary. co.uk Previous applicants need not apply. Hoping the lovely weather continues and everyone enjoys their summer. Best Wishes Margaret Godley

Nala & Simba M&F 5 years June 2018 ? Each other Yes

N (Blue tortie) and Simba (Ginger) are siblings Nala who have had to come into care due to their owner being very ill and unable to care for them anymore. He loved them very much and tried his best to keep them but realised that his only choice was to rehome them and asked Mayflower for their help in finding a purrrfect home. They are finding life here a bit daunting and are tending to hide away in their bedroom. Given a little time and patience their true personalities will soon come shining through. They have been housecats and would like to remain so. A home together is essential for this stunning pair as they have been together for quite a while. Have you got room in your home and hearts ? We hope so.

Name: Sex: Age: Came into care: Good with dogs: Good with cats: Good with children:

Sami Male 7 Years May 2018 No No 10+

Sami was rehomed from Mayflower as a youngster but he has had to come back into our care due to circumstances beyond his control. He used to be very happy in his home and enjoyed life to the full snuggling up with his Mum in the evenings and exploring his garden during the day. This all changed when a huge tom-cat moved into the area! This tom terrorised the neighbourhood and picked on all the cats in the area – particularly Sami. Sami’s mum started to keep him in as a housecat and this was working well until one night when the Tom broke through the locked catflap and attacked Sami in the kitchen. This resulted in Sami being rushed to the emergency Vets and he still bears the scars to his left eye. Unfortunately when Sami returned home, he was terrified of everything in his home even though the bully had gone. Even though his owner loved him very much she realised that a fresh start was what he needed. Sami is a wonderfully affectionate chap but needs to be an only pet who is now kept safely inside as a housecat. Have you got what Sami needs.??
